Haychay: Dear Sir. Note that as I had mentioned before. HSE as a profession requires certification for various levels of proficiency. It generally has various levels. So for you as a graduate, you will start from General HSE and then most likely move on to Level 2, skipping level 1. This certification is controlled by ISPON. Need to contact them directly. They have a website and some states have their centers and coordinators. Novelle offers HSE Levels 1, 2 and 3. I would advise you ask ISPON if you can do that and if they will accept Novelle's certificate when you want to become a professional member of ISPON. Remember, merely doing levels 1, 2 and 3 DOESNT MAKE YOU A MEMBER. But it is a prerequisite for application to become a member. NISP and ISPON are mainly the same thing. ISPON used to be known as NISP. Left to me alone I would change ISPON to NISHEP. The ISPON Name till date is being dragged by Institute of Software Programmers of Nigeria and they opened their own website using ''ISPON''. Secondly, the profession isn't just safety but HSE in general and their interrelationships and how one affects or influences another. Please one thing I want intending professionals to bear in mind is that regardless of how many certifications you have, one can still be unlucky in landing a dream job in an oil company. We all cant work there, lets us be honest. However, to be good at the profession you need these skills and knowledge and verification . As a matter of fact, it is the law that before you can practice professionally as a SAFETY PROFESSIONAL, you need to meet the minimum requirements of ISPON. So my advise is that if you hear the profession calling then go for it. Before you start, develop a plan on how to be at the zenith of the profession. Certifications cost money, time, inconveniences and sacrifices. If at the end of the day and after all the stress you don't have a job in Shell or Chevron will you be sad and say you wasted your time? Will you regret it? Or will you even go ahead, register A HSE Consulting company, get the requisite licenses like DPR, FMENV, NOSDRA,NIPEX, etc and then go ahead and register as a contractor with various companies in multi industrial domains. The most important thing to ask yourself is this. Can you analyze the industry and see where demand surpasses supply and can you provide the supply and grab a chunk of the market? This is simply what entrepreneurship is about. Yes, jobs are stepping stones and a source of finance for investment, but note that jobs make you lazy to investing too. Long story short, do what makes you happy. Do what will make you happy and do what you enjoy doing. Do it because you mainly enjoy it. Because it is a passion. You already have a qualification as a Building Tech Professional. You can delve into the specific area of STRUCTURAL SAFETY. Things like probabilistic modelling of loads, modelling and calculation of resistances, Uncertainties in structural engineering problems, etc. It involves a sh. it load of Matlab and differential calculus calculations but it is fun and interesting. You can also do stuff on Offshore Structural Safety Assessment. You can register with offshore structures class societies like DNV, BVGL, ABS, Lloyds, etc. and carry out inspections on their behalf. You can help as a worker or as a contractor for insurance companies to make sure that the insured structures are properly maintained and don't suffer losses due to bad maintenance. You will advise the insurance companies on the risks etc. You can carry out maintenance of building structures and embark on life extension activities on building and structures to increase their useful life. You can do Rig Inspections and do condition surveys for drilling rigs and equipment. Listen, there are a lot of possibilities out there. The thing is not every one sees these opportunities. Those that do are too do not know how to go about it or are simply scared. Good luck. 4 Likes |

jiri123: The question you should ask yourself is ''why am I getting these certifications''? If you can answer this convincingly then do what makes you happy. I have said that certifications are good. They provide skills, knowledge, network and they are legal requirements to be able to practice a profession or to belong to a professional guild. At the end of the day, do these lead you to your ultimate interest? Take me for instance, I love teaching. Everything I do is in one tiny way or in one major way, leading me to when I will eventually retire and go into the academic world to lecture. Teaching makes me happy and keeps me fulfilled. So people may laugh when I go for a short teachers training course on how to prepare student lecture notes etc. but they don't understand why I do it. AutoCAD and Project Management are good generic courses/certificates to have. These trainings are not limited to only one profession. So I don't see anything wrong in it. If you go to my LinkedIn page I have attended over 20 courses not to include conferences, workshops etc. Your direction depends on where you want to be. It will depend on your dreams and goals and interests. 1 Like |

OmaniPadmeHum: i love what u just stated, its like u just read my mind and what i was planning venturing into. Thank you sir like i stated earlier on, i intend exploring the oil and gas industry and i am currently working for a private firm which deal with laser scanning technology, 3D modeling, 2D CAD services and As is and As built documentation in the oil and gas industry but they dont have a HSE manger/officer, but are registered under the british safety council as a company. So i intend to explore this opportunity, cause they need it and thats part of the reason i want to become a professional but how do i explain to the management that it would be highly beneficial to them considering am about to just start my training i would really appreciate your professional idea on it. OmaniPadmeHum:Nice write up sir, I am a graduate of food science tech and currently working under sales...I have been thinking of adding a HSE cert to my Certificate even before getting my present Job. Now i am considering going for NEBOSH with NOVELLE (Heard they are good and internationally recognized), if i will go for HSE course, i'd better go/start for/from the Highest/Best..Mind you, I dont have any HSE background. Is it an improvement? or is it a must i will start from the HSE 1,2,3? Do you think its a good idea? 1 Like |

gsalvatore: Based on the the requirements in Nigeria. You need to be a member of ISPON to be considered a full HSE professional. To become a member you need to have done General HSE, and HSE levels 1,2,3. Novelle offers this and ISPON offers this too. My advise is you call ISPON and ask them if they will accept Novelles HSE Certificate for you to become a member. If they Say No, then please get your basic levels from ISPON. If however ISPON says you can come along with Novelle's certificate, then I will advise you choose Novelle. They are more serious and business oriented than ISPON. Please understand the above as I have spent a few minutes arguing with a Google relying '' keyboard Obgyn'' on nairaland who claims he went to medical school, but he lacks basic understanding of logical reasoning. Funny enough I have seen more HSE professionals think better than them in areas of occupational health and industrial hygiene. I advice you to do your NEBOSH after ISPON /Basic HSE. It makes it easier. As NEBOSH is more robust than ISPON. Since you are just starting, it will give you the needed basics so when you begin NEBOSH which is more advanced, you can easily fit in. It isn't a must. It is just a suggestion. Good luck and do let the house know. 2 Likes |

akachianyim: For now there is really no complicated recognition of certificates/bodies in Nigeria for the HSE profession which includes HSE Engineering, HSE Sciences, HSE Management etc.` What is generally known in Nigeria is ISPON/NISP which is like the ''COREN/NSE'' of HSE in Nigeria. That is the main professional body. In terms of certificates what we know also is HSE Levels 1, 2, 3 and NEBOSH IGC/NGC or Diploma. There are other courses of course, but the aforementioned are the most popular. One thing you must note is that as a matter of fact this knowledge of how the profession is structured is only known by few companies that even have an idea of how the profession is organised. A lot of other companies do not know much about this structure of the profession and the various levels of competency. My advise is this. First be a member of ISPON before getting any other thing. This has always been my opinion. GET ISPON/NISP, then if any body likes, he can go to the moon and get a certificate from Aliens. BUT AT LEAST, HAVE ISPON/NISP and ensure you have done at least HSE Levels 1, 2 ,3. Any other additional thing you want will be added advantage. Based on excerpts, the World Safety Organization (WSO) was founded in 1975 as a result of an international conference, organized by the Safety Organization of the Philippine Islands (SOPI), in Manila, Philippines. There were over 1,000 delegates from over 20 counties represented at that conference (Thailand, USA, Japan, Australia, China, Iran, Singapore, Spain, Nigeria, Sweden, Iraq, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Hong Kong, and other.) On that occasion the conference delegates agreed on the need for an international exchange of information, programs, new research methods and data, in the areas of safety, environment, and all associated fields. The purpose of the WSO is to internationalize all safety fields including Occupational and environmental safety & health;Accident prevention movement; And to disseminate throughout the world the practices, skills, arts and technologies of safety and accident prevention field. In fulfilling their purpose they also offer courses and they also have a certification board. Some of their courses offered include: GENERAL HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT HSE LEVEL 1 (FOUNDATION) HSE LEVEL 2 (SPECIALIST) Appreciation HSE LEVEL 3 (PROFESSIONAL) Supervision HSE ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL (Advanced HSE) HSE ADVANCED HEALTHCARE SPECIALIST (Advanced HealthCare) SAFETY AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE (SafER) AT WORKPLACE OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & RISK MANAGEMENT OSHA STANDARD FIRST AID & EMERGENCY CARE INDUSTRIAL FIRST AID AND CPR DESIGNATED FIRST AIDERS COURSE (DFA) EMERGENCY RESPONSE & MANAGEMENT ERGONOMICS, MANUAL HANDLING & CASUALTY HANDLING OIL & GAS OPERATIONAL SAFETY BEHAVIORAL BASED SAFETY BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS ADULT, CHILD & INFANT & AED) ADVANCED CARDIOVASCULAR LIFE SUPPORT (ACLS) FIRE PREVENTION AND PROTECTION SCAFFOLD SAFETY ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION & REPORTING CONFINED SPACE ENTRY GAS TESTING AND BREATHING APPARATUS ELECTRICAL SAFETY ENVIRONMENT WASTE MANAGEMENT MARINE SAFETY RIGGERS SAFETY etc... My advise still remains that you first be a member of ISPON, do HSE Levels 1, 2, 3 under them and get their membership before getting any other thing. Please get ISPON/NISP, then if any body likes, he can go to the moon and get a certificate from Aliens as added advantage. You can do ILO, OSHA etc (follow this link for a cool book on fundamentals http://www.ilo.org/wcmsp5/groups/public/@dgreports/@dcomm/@publ/documents/publication/wcms_093550.pdf ) BUT AT LEAST, HAVE ISPON/NISP and ensure you have done at least HSE Levels 1, 2 ,3. Any other additional thing you want will be added advantage. |

OmaniPadmeHum:You are doing great work sir on this platform. I need advice though I don't know where to start from. But let me highlight my journey in HSE so you will know how to help. I have National Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environmental Engineering Technology from Petroleum Training Institute and a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering (both as best graduating student of the programmes). My passion in HSE is a burning one. I have always wanted to own a firm that provides quality HSE consulting services. After my PTI ND, before proceeding for my degree, I purchased membership form from ISPON/NISP, paid N20,000 for the form but was unable to submit it as my degree was competing with funds and time to do the course that was necessary for membership. I have also registered a firm with CAC with general nature of business being: Environmental Services, Fire & Safety Services, Oil Servicing. I have practical experience in HSE from internship that I did with Environmental Health Office, Department of Petroleum Resources, and Mobil Producing Nigeria. I have also done consulting services to oil service companies/petroleum (these were not major contracts; I got them from referals by DPR staff). Now i'm back from NYSC and want to fully maximize my potential in HSE consulting. I don't want the knowledge i've acquired from school and industry to be dormant. I have always wanted to consult for companies rather than working in a company. Please read through my journey and advice me. Thanks 1 Like |
