Yes a soldier can resign if you have a genuine reason to do so. And again if you have served the required number of years and don't want to Wait for the military to retired you, you can apply and leave and you will be collecting your pension. So you can resign at any point in time.

But someone said when you resign before your retirement, you are tagged a terrorist because you've already learnt the military tactics and therefore may use it negatively. It's a do or die affair

But a retired soldier can still use the military tactics he acquired for terrorism use na

In Nigeria you resign after you have put in a minimum of 10 years service, anything outside that you will be considered a deserter and hunted down

God bless you OP for this thread! Just last week, a soldier approached me that I should get him some slippers to wear! I was wondering why but he told me that he excaped the guard room and that he wants to returned to his people! While I was making the arrangement, some 7 soldiers stormed our house and drag the soldier back to the barrack!
The story was that he didn't want to continue in the army! I was now wondering IS IT BY FORCE??
I really don't think it is as easy as people think. a soldier is a government "property".

I don't know about Nigerian military. Most of the ones that I know, you start with a Contract of a couple of years, you can choose to leave when it expires or you can extend. If you chose to leave while your Contract is on. Then you are AWOL or seen as a deserter and hunted down. You cannot even leave the Nigerian defence academy just like that. The French Foreign legion starts with a 5 years contract I think, then upon completion you could pick shorter durations
, if you leave while having a valid contract, head hunters will track you down. If you are a soldier, ask your commanding officer how you can get out. [b]I have a feeling that you cannot even discuss this in North Korea.

Life can sometimes be unpredictable and therefore we make choices that can either make or mar us, the latter very unfortunate. For many years I've been saddled with the responsibility of seeking for the answers to these questions; "can a soldier or any uniformed personnel who is in the force decide to change his/her career and therefore resign?" "can he/she walk up to his/her commander and say 'sir I don't want to be a soldier anymore?"

My dad's junior brother is a retired military personnel n he called it a quit because he was developing asthma at that time n yes , one can quit the force if u have a reasonable excuse for it.

Very possible bro. Even as an officer once u fail promotion thrice, na compulsory retirement.

U can even go on a lonnnnnnnnng AWOL and never report back. Better still u can write thru ur commanding officer.

BTW y finish what you can't start, before embarking on a journey y not weight the Pro and cons

You can only resign on health grounds or after 15 years of service (this would only be considered for strong reasons). If you leave forcefully, you'll be tagged a deserter a crime punishable by death.

Death will come to you when it will come even inside your bedroom.

No, you cannot resign, you can only leave in 3 ways known as the 3 D's
Death. Discharge. Or Dismiss
If you desert, its a serious crime known as AWOL (away without official leave)

Yes, a soldier can resign from service, I severed in the Nigerian Army for 11 years before I resigned. We call it voluntary discharge, but if you discharge voluntarily, before 10 years, you'll only be entitled to gratuity but no pension. But from 10 years and above you'll have your pension and gratuity. We also have discharge on medical grounds.

y did u resign

Re: Can A Soldier Resign From The Force? by SMEpromote: 9:45am On Jan 07, 2018
Let me share the little insight I have on this topic as told by someone who attended the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA).

As a military trainee studying in the NDA, the Nigerian government bears the entire cost of your study and training as well as feeding and other sundry expenses throughout the duration of your stay.

Aside the training cost, you are also paid some allowance during the NDA period. I'm not sure right now if the allowance is monthly or quarterly, but it's periodic and I understand it is substantial.

Your parents/guardian/sponsor can choose not to spend a dime on you for the duration of the training. (Dude even said he could afford to send money from his allowance to his siblings in other schools).

After the huge investment on you by the government, it is expected you give back to the Nigerian state through your military service.

So back to your question, you are not allowed to resign unless the conditions below are true:

1) You've given a reasonable length of military service, which is quite lengthy. This can come in form of retirement.

2) Deformity (often caused during combat) which can prevent you from effective discharge of your duty as a military officer

3) Serious health reasons which could be mental, psychological, physical etc, but this has to be proven.

4) You can also be allowed to resign on compassionate grounds, but the reason has to be very compelling to your superiors for them to grant your request for approval.

There may be other reasons, but quitting without approval is not taken lightly by the military, you'll be treated as a deserter and this may attracts grave/serious consequences.
