@bold, phew, are you for real? That would be such a relief for her if I tell her. Fear of losing her children is the only reason she is pushing for court marriage.
Why is she afraid to lose her children?
Is she expecting the marriage to fail?

Divorce or accept his wishes only?
No other option?

What about persuasion and discussion?
Nigerian in laws have a way of intruding into other family members marriages and they can persuade the man to chase her out and seize her children.
I don't get why many Nairaland men have a strong anti women mentality.
And by the way it truly isn't about money. Not to brag but our dad worked in SPDC for over 30years and amassed millions of naira and cats and properties for his children. We can all sit down comfortably for the rest of our lives without working, we have enough. And my parents sponsored their wedding because he was still a struggling up coming young man. I can assure you she does not want his money.
He doesn't have a quarter of what she has.

I guess the real question is why is she married to a man she doesn't trust in the least bit and into a family she has to protect herself from?

I'm sorry but I don't see that union going very far.

Her husband is vehemently against having a court marriage with her, They did church marriage and reception but no court,

He keeps refusing and saying he doesn't see the need because he isn't travelling abroad soon and so does not see the importance.

Please what is the usefulness of court marriage for her as a wife and him as the husband? I want to know how to advise her in convincing the husband.

If they don't ve marriage certificate recognised by the court.. Either gotten from the church or the court..... Then they are not legally married..... I fear the husband has intentions for polygamy or infidelity or other things that ll break the legally binding rules of the couple... Hence he doesn't want to get a document that ll make the wife sue him in future...... Your sis made d mistake first.... The court marriage should ve come first

Why marry a woman you have to be warry of? The court marriage is meant to protect your wife in certain eventualities, maybe he should do add specific pre-nuptial terms, if he's afraid of the woman taking advantage of the court marriage.

So much stupid comments here.... All this teens too go dey comment for Wetin dem no know about..... That's I hate this forum...... Some pages should be age restricted by Seun to avoid useless advise and comments.....its normal for guys to fear legal binding cuz they have infidelity in mind...... My dad impregnated another lady outside buh can't ever let her get close to the house cuz he knows his wife will press charges against him..... As for now my mum is kind enough not to report his extra marital affairs to the court buh he dare not do rubbish cuz he knows she can sue him anytime... That's d advantage of court marriage it favours women more....the lady gets a certain percentage of the man's wealth in case of divorce

It seems the problem started even before the marriage. Why is she so afraid that that she might be thrown out of the marriage by her husband's family?
Were they not in support of the marriage before the church wedding?

So if it has to cost millions to travel abroad and manipulation just to get a marriage certificate, then the marriage doesn't have a strong foundation of trust and common purpose.

It is not by force to marry na. There are men out there who will happily do her bidding especially gold diggers (excavators). grin cheesy

It seems like ticking the boxes: money ticked, car from dad ticked, house from dad ticked, registry marriage to be ticked by hook or by crook.

Shouldn't basic stuff like which type (s) of marriage be agreed upon before the journey
even begins? shocked shocked
Church must have given them a marriage certificate and the court has a copy. You go to court for the marriage certificate if the place u wedded didn't give as it is not empowered to conduct marriages or u did not approach any church or mosque at all. Meanwhile, this becomes necessary when u wanna travel. It doesn't protect anybody.. U will still deal with ur issues in court when and if yawa gas. It doesn't stop polygamy but only recognizes the wife with it when it is time to travel. But Nigerians like taking photos behind ikoyi registry signboard.

Your sister just married a sharp man, thats all. Court marriage won't work anymore. Shikena. Pele to your sister. Men are no longer stupid u should do same too if u want to live long

A woman who wears jeans shorts to bed at night is not a w woman, she probably married him for wealth and knows of his other women she fortifying her financial future as she's not really inlove with him, a court marriage is a woman's insurance, if she does the marriage certificate will be issued to her the woman and that's her weapon/ option for divorce or claim to alimony, therein to he's estate post if he passes on,
It's a desperate act and most men see it as a means of self ruin or self poisoning.
Ipso facto he will grant her a court wedding if she would sign a prenuptial agreement in that same court.
The Oracle has spoken, be wise

City of David has no business in court... as rccg are recognised by the court already... the court wedding is to go pose in front of court sign board ikoyi registry. Like people like showing off that place. And i don't blame them...

It is because America embassy prefer that certificate more.
Don't know what city of David is but you mentioned RCCG been recognized by court. Not true. Marriages are only recognised by the court only if you have a marriage certificate of the FG. It is bears ministry of interior. Acceptable anywhere in the world. Going to Ikoyi registry for it is just a waste of time and money. When you wed in Orthodox churches ie Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, they issue you the certificate. You will file one and your local government Secretariat.

Since she is flush with cash, she could splurge on a family abroad vacation all expenses paid by her. A legal proof of marriage will be required for the visa processing. This might be her best bet.

She should only do that after she is convinced her husband has forgotten about the issue, and she is still desperate for it.

Church marriage certificate is enough.

My parents use their court marriage certificate for all visa processing. I know because I pretty much do these kind of things for the whole family.

lol this is very funny, there is nothing like court marriage, you only have registry marriage, that's why you see ikoyi Registry and not court, and its not done in a court but in the local government, a registered Church recognized by the registry is a court wedding, you will take their certificate and go and enter it in the registry, check if your church is registered,

End of the unnecessary drama. I had a cousin who went to Church for her wedding and was still insisting they did court. I tried to explain to her but she no hear. Eventually, they went to the court and those ones said that they already had the record as the church had dropped a copy. Unnecessary drama.
If it's a church that has the licence to join people together, then the court must have a copy of their marriage cert. Who gave the church the cert in the first case?

Na wa oo grin

Oga marriage is all about unity and love. there should be compromise in marriage. If she tries to persuade him it's not bad. They are partners, not master and slave.
See you talking of death for this kain thing, it's not that serious biko.
The man isn't a demon, he is very easy going he just needs to convinced in a logical way.

The main point is that a successful marriage is about 2 things, understanding and communication, both lead to compromise.

In this case, there is no understanding and probably no communication. This will lead to chaos.

Understanding leads to shifting grounds. She can ask her husband to give her a reason why he will not go for court marriage or tell her husband outrightly why she wants court marriage. This is called communication and this leads to understanding, then compromise sets in.

At the, she must not have her way if he still refuse. My advise is for her to politely communicate and understand his position without creating any rockus.

fear of losing her children is more important to her than the fear of losing her husband?!?!?! this woman has misplaced priorities.
but hey, pls do enlighten us by telling us HOW a woman (supposedly richer than her husband) can lose her damn children?!

you've not heard of cases where the woman on returning from work didn't meet the husband and children at home, waited patiently for their return thinking they probably went gallivanting but still couldn't find them until it dawned on them after some days that the man's family also had a hand in the whole saga. What would become of that woman at the end?

There is nothing like court marriage but rather marriage registry. Most Churches cannot wed you without being registered at your resident LGA office. Registering your marriage is important for both spouses.

Someone mentioned earlier "... the real question is why is she married to a man she doesn't trust in the least bit and into a family she has to protect herself from?"

How on this beautiful earth does someone enter into a marriage with thoughts of 'Plan B'? It creates in her subconscious a desire to quit at the slightest crisis, why? Knowing that the end is a win-win for her. The lady's sibling is not even helping matters. You suspect he's polygamous yet you still allow your sister to marry him, your dad even sponsoring the wedding.

You guys just want to add to the statistics of unhappy couples, cos with this quest, there will never be peace in that home. She is legally married.

already making plans for outing option, you don't enter into a marriage with this kind of mindset. I am not saying registry is not necessary cos I did one but reason we even did was so to seal our relationship even before we faced our families not so we can protect ourselves from each other. Even with the certificate in this part of the world when you suspicions comes to life you can still be frustrated and denied the so-called rights you are seeking. Let God be the anchor of your marriage and not some piece of paper.

What would become of that woman at the end?

come on, we've also heard countless stories of wives disappearing with the kids because they somehow foolishly believe that the child is more theirs than the husband.... but lets forget about that and pls, do tell us all: is court marriage gonna stop a man from disappearing with his kids (if he really wanted to)?!

delishpot:
Stop being naive. The fear of losing children after a marriage ends has been more important to Nigerian women since the beggining of time. That fear has kept many women in unhappy marriages. Even some nen have endured much because they fear for what becomes of their children should they leave the marriage.
If a man is not a good husband why should the woman fear to lose him after all said and done? Which normal mother will not choose her children over a man who has decided to move on? Who doesnt know that the typical Nigerian man who decides to push his wife out ussually keep the children and send her out empty handed? Even those who escape with their children are told to return them or have the kids taken by force. Why are you acting like you were born yesterday?

some women have really lost the plot! see how this woman is focussing on marriage end, intsead of enjoying the present....no wonder these marriage quickly end in divorce with such state of mind. but then again, how can you assume that this woman would automatically be a good mother?! or should we just let any good for nothing mother have the child, at any cost? you women dont reason properly in such issues because you have this misplaced sense of entitlement where you believe that you are a better parent than the man (OR better yet, that the child belongs to y'all because you carried it for 9months).

if you really believe the above in bold, and men are dead set on having the kids (and not sharing custody) then why focus on court marriage? if a man in Nigeria wants his kids, then he will get them, and no court can stop him. thats the reason so many end up in foul play. just for argument sake, look at your negative assumptions about men, and tell me if a woman entering marriage should have such in mind? the enemy of women is WOMEN themselves.

DavidEsq:

My guy, the mata over weak me o! Besides, why can't she jus walk into a lawyer's office, pay a lil something for some advice, rather than all this drama. Knowledge is priceless. If she did church marriage abi wedding, it's a matter of knowing the church, to determine if the church has been authorised to solemnise marriages because some of these churches too dey do ova sabi cheesy. Dem go gee u marriage certificate wey be ordinary paper an u go dey reason say u don do statutory marriage, whereas, na customary marriage u don do grin.
If the church dey certified, na the same tin as court marriage because na the Federal government, through the court, give d church power to do statutory marriage.

this woman is obviously plotting something, as it certainly makes no damn sense to be so negative about marriage, so early in their marriage life.... and to already picture herself as a divorce mother with kids, rather than a happy wife. but hey, thats what happens when women marry for the wrong reasons. if she had any hint of love for this man, she wouldnt focus on such petty issues.

somehow:
The woman is actually the dangerous person here. Can't be trusted cos she surely have an interior motive

when it smells like fish, it surely is... the important question is: why waste time getting married if all her focus is about the divorce agreement on the kids.

What does a marriage certificate mean to you??
It's a proof of marriage. I believe everyone should do whatever it takes to make them feel safe and secure in their marriage provided it doesn't hurt the other party in any way. I don't see the harm in a court marriage certificate.
