Messed up which economy? You must be referring to a Nigeria in a parallel universe!

Nigerias' economy was on an upward trajectory when GEJ and Okonjo-Iweala were in charge. Almost all socio-economic indicators were positive. This kwarruption-kwarruption you numbskulls keep on parroting about just to try and deflect blame for Buhari and APC gross incompetence and running the economy aground....you know Nigeria performed better in the corruption perception index during the time of GEJ? Even regarding security, can you actually say Nigeria is more secure today than when GEJ was President? Wasn't the naira better valued during the GEJ years than it is today with you 'man of integrity' in power? The present job losses nko.....can you compare the present job data to those of the GEJ years?

Come to think of it, since your 'saint' is now in power and corruption has purportedly been reduced to its barest minimum...since the price of oil has been above the budgeted estimates for at least the past two budgets....since the Buhari gov't has recovered all the billions of dollars they say GEJ gov't and PDP stole since 1999...since all this is now the case shouldn't we be experiencing economic boom and happiness?

You guys are so annoying walahi!

A lot of states were owing salaries

It was even Buhari that gave them bail out fund to pay salaries arrears

Truth be told, he borrowed to pay salaries because NOI had already warned that if subsidy is not taken away, the country will borrow to pay salaries, but you and your lots gathered at Ojota to protest subsidy removal with the likes of Tinubu, hell'rufia, bakare etc.
Today, we are still paying subsidy and it has rising from about 230bn during GEN to 1.4trn per year according to Min.of state for petroleum, from 87 per litter to 145.
No be to give monkey water be the issue but na to collect cup back be the koko. Buhari will so deal with us to the extent that even you his support will sort for a self contained apartment in Mozabique or Guinea Bissau. To have developed to the point of supporting you assertions here on NL, you can effectively run a local govt. Area so why are you, in this age and time, still clamouring for a grandpa cattle rearer to be ruling over you?

But you don't remember when Bakare formed the Save Nigeria Group (SNG) led a protest to have Jonathan installed as acting president, do you?

And was subsidy the only reason the economy collapsed
And you don't pay subsidy when oil price drops

Incidentally protesting against subsidy became an unforgivable sin when Jonathan became president
When Oshiomole was protesting against subsidy under Obasanjo, did you make these excuses?

Jonathan, in turn trying to ignore them, might be the reason why it is generally perceived that he failed the south. It was expected that he would address the age long neglect of the south, especially SS, but he didn't seem to give that region a special attention or preferential treatment.

This could be the reason.

a lot of pmb's praise singers are downright ignorant & mischievous.

the issue of borrowing to pay salaries was a one off thing & aside from the subsidy challenge you pointed out, they forget that at the time, Nigeria lost its biggest crude oil importer, the USA.

for over a year, Nigeria could not sell more than half of its crude as it was looking for new buyers.

mind you, even without selling enough crude, GEJ still had to pay subsidy & ensure the exchange rate remained relatively manageable.

they fail to see that at less than $80 p/b, pmb is still paying subsidy & doubled the exchange rate.

Refresh your memory:

"In the face of dwindling oil revenues, Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the Federal Government has borrowed about N473billion to pay salaries and fund the 2015 budget.

The Minister, who was speaking in Abuja on the details of the N4.493trillion appropriation already passed by the National Assembly, said the federal government had to raise its borrowing level from N570 billion to N882 billion to enable it meet its financial obligations to workers and contractors.

The minister blamed it on the decline in oil revenue in late 2014, which accounted for 50 per cent cut in the total federally collectible revenue as well as the low revenue receipts from non-oil sources.

Despite past efforts to reduce government borrowing level, she said the acute cash flow problems forced government to take the decision to curb the negative impact of revenue crunch.

The Minister said about N380billion came from external sources, while the balance is for domestic borrowing.

“We have tried to work within the budget,” she said. “Last year, the borrowing came down to about N570 billion. But, this year, because of the very difficult cash flow situation, we have provided N882billion in borrowing."

Because it cannot be a unilateral decision.

It would need the approval of the House.

Also, it is a decision that can be made when there are adequate alternatives e.g. Dangote refinery.

It’s the Legislative arm that’s suppose to determine if the refineries should be sold then table it to the president to sign!!
We need to chill with this Buhari thing, he has not done well but it’s the Legislative arm that has failed us

Okonjo-Iweala warns of economic recession

ON JUNE 14, 2012

Abuja — Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has warned of a difficult time ahead as she told the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, yesterday, that “government should buckle up and prepare for a possible recession” in the economy.

Nigeria: Austerity - We're Ready for the Worst - Okonjo-Iweala

More
By Kingsley Ighomwenghian (Lagos), David Agba (Abuja) and Igoniko Oduma (Yenagoa)
Despite what some have termed the looming doom hovering over the nation's horizon as a result of the crash in oil price, Co-ordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Thursday assured of Nigeria's readiness to weather the storm, should the price slide further at the international market.

Brent crude oil futures fell below $74 per barrel on Thursday after the group decided not to cut production, despite global oversupply.

FG introduces austerity measures
ON NOVEMBER 17, 2014

ABUJA—The Federal Government, yesterday, introduced some austerity measures and scaled down the crude oil bench mark for the 2015 budget. In a bid to insulate the economy from falling crude oil prices the federal government announced far-reaching policy measures to deal with the crashing crude oil prices, cutting 2015 oil benchmark from $78 to $73 per barrel. Crude oil prices dropped to $77.76 per barrel, some cents below the $78 earlier proposed to the National Assembly as bench mark for the 2015 budget.

Nigerian govt borrowing billions to pay salaries – Okonjo-Iweala
May 6, 2015

In the face of dwindling oil revenues, Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the Federal Government has borrowed about N473billion to pay salaries and fund the 2015 budget.

https://www.premiumtimesng.com/business/182543-nigerian-govt-borrowing-billions-to-pay-salaries-okonjo-iweala.html

1. The incompetent woman warned us about recession back in 2012. Why? Was this under PMG or Jona?

2. The same incompetent and Jona introduced austerity back in 2014 when oil was selling for $78. Why? Was this under PMG or Jona?

3. The same incompetent woman and Jona borrowed money from 2012 till Jona's last month in office/May 2015.

She was practically borrowing hundreds of billions to pay workers salary.

4. The same incompetent woman was the economic coordinator, but she was so dumb, clueless and colluding with looters that she left a battered and unversified economy.

5. The so-called finance minister couldn't even account for every kobo of public funds. The whole economy was leaking funds from NNPC and other money-generating agencies looting funds and refusing to remit funds into federal accounts.

6. Madueke opened dozens of illegal accounts and looted billions of dollars under her nose, but the incompetent woman looked the other way.

7. The same incompetent and clueless woman and Jona stole $2 billion and gave it to DASUKI ATM to share with their crooked and corrupt PDP cronies.

So, the useless woman managed our economy so good that she was prescribing recession, introducing austerity, borrowing hundreds of billions till her last day in office to pay workers salary.

She was so good that she left us with a battered and undiversified economy, depleted ECA and foreign reserves.

You people are just too ignorant and clueless, you think we arrived at this stage by accident.

This woman introduced austerity measure and asked you to get ready to suffer when oil was selling for $78, but you want to like like a king when oil is selling for $27.

You ippbs are just too mentally clueless and lazy

Sahara Reporters/sowore blackmail?

Does she consider herself a failure or success in her assignments under Jonathan? She recalibrated the economy to capture previously hidden industries. Big deal, but that's not the job of growing the economy. The oil fueled economic growth of almost 7% had tapered down to about 2% by the time her government handed over power with huge debts and deficit.
But on the other hand she coordinated the signing away of money to shady uses by writing a letter to wash off her hands like Pilate did in the murder of Jesus. She looked away while her fellow president Diezani was looting and sharing national resources with her boy friends. Even a Ghanaian guy took part in the heist.
So did she fail or succeed?
