Travel / New Rules For Immigrants to the UK by Reverend(m): 11:07am On Mar 04, 2008
The government's overhaul of UK immigration started last week (29 February) with the introduction of the new points-based system.

The new rules will mean that businesses will face more administration and significantly higher penalties for failing to comply. But what all organisations need to appreciate is that these rules are not just about rogue employers or gangs of illegal workers: they are there to catch everyone.

Q and A on the new rules

What are the current immigration rules?

Until today, there were 80 different ways people could apply to come to Britain for work or study, which many found confusing and complex and which critics said failed to meet government goals.

What's happening today?

The first phase of the government's points-based system (PBS) comes into force. The scheme, based on the Australian system, is designed to ensure only those with skills the country needs can come to Britain to work. Separate measures to clamp down on rogue employers who employ illegal immigrants also begin today.

The home secretary, Jacqui Smith, has said the new system is part of the "biggest shakeup of the immigration system in 45 years". The PBS to control the flow of migrant workers will run alongside plans to introduce "earned citizenship", outlined in a green paper earlier this month, a new UK border agency to strengthen immigration controls at the borders, and the introduction of ID cards for foreign nationals.

What qualifications will people from outside the EU need?

That will depend on which tier of the PBS they apply for. Tier 1, which rolls out today, affects highly skilled people who want to work, train or study in the UK. Applicants who fall into this category do not need a job offer because they are considered to be among those most likely to benefit the economy. They will be awarded points based on their qualifications, previous earnings, UK experience, age, English language skills and available maintenance (funds).

Tier 2, which comes into force in the summer, targets skilled workers with a job offer or a company transfer from overseas. Tier 3 covers low-skilled jobs and will only be used if specific shortages are identified that cannot be filled by either the domestic or European labour force. Tier 4,which comes into force early next year, will cover students applying to come to the UK to study. Tier 5 will cover temporary workers such as musicians, actors and sportspeople, and comes into force in the summer.

What about the role of UK employers in employing overseas workers?

The government is introducing a licensing system for employers who want to recruit from overseas and bring skilled workers into the UK. No company will be granted a sponsor's licence without being approved in advance by the Border and Immigration Agency.

Rogue employers face civil penalties of up to £10,000 for each illegal worker they employ. Those found to have knowingly hired illegal workers could incur an unlimited fine and be sent to prison.

What are the reasons for the shakeup?

The government has been under pressure to prove to the public it is tightening its grip on migration and citizenship controls. Local authorities complain the rising influx of immigrants is imposing a burden on public services, while the government has been criticised over its failure to account for the true number of foreign workers in the UK. Last October, the government was forced to admit its estimates on the number of people coming to Britain to work were wrong. The figure of 800,000 was revised up to 1.1m, and some people claimed the actual figure was even higher.

The government also faced embarrassment over illegal workers in Britain after it emerged that about 5,000 illegal immigrants were mistakenly cleared to work as security staff. Some of those wrongly given licences by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) ended up working for the Metropolitan police. Others reportedly found jobs in Whitehall and at ports and airports.

Why is the points-based system seen as controversial?

The scheme has been criticised by small business representatives, who have argued its heavy fines on those employing illegal immigrants are unreasonable. Some businesses say the clampdown on low-skilled immigrants will hit certain businesses hard, such as Bangladeshi-owned curry houses who recruit staff directly from Bangladesh, for example.

The Conservative party say the points scheme does not go far enough and have called for a cap on numbers entering Britain.

Without doubt the King James Bible was written, re-written and edited to fit with the times and the motives of the era, but then again, the same can be said about all the different versions of the bible that exist and there are many.

They all contradict each other and were written to support the beliefs of the day and / or religion they are supposed to represent, be that Mormon, Jehovah's, Catholics, Anglican or any other of the myriad of faiths within the Christian church.

Just think of them like newspapers, they all cover the major news stories, but each put their own angles on the story, be that for creative or political reasons.
Religion / Re: Sex Is Worship by Reverend(m): 1:06pm On Feb 02, 2008
God made us sexual (Genesis 1-2). We are to follow the law of love in sexual matters, as in all else. Romans 13:8-10: "Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; you shall not covet'; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Loves does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law."

We are not to covet or steal another person's partner (adultery). (But this has nothing to do with either having a sexual fantasy about another person's partner nor with sharing sexually with another's partner with agreement and permission.)

There is no prohibition on what we know as premarital sex, post-marital sex or extra-marital sex among consenting partners. There is no prohibition on adolescent or teenage sexual sharing. Here it is the responsibility of parents to properly instruct their children about how to love and how to live responsibly.

There are no grounds in the Bible for teaching sexual abstinence as a unique litmus test for spiritual "purity", as traditional Christianity has done throughout the centuries. While there is, of course, such a thing as sexual sin, i.e. abusive, selfish, unloving sexual attitudes or actions, there is no special or unusual emphasis on sexual sin in the Bible as there has been in historic Christianity.

It can be reasonably concluded that the sexual ethic of traditional Christianity is an artificial, repressive and legalistic ethic which ignores both our God-given natures and the law of love. Thus, this ethic is an abusive ethic in its basic nature which hurts rather than heals people. It is also an ineffective ethic which does not even accomplish its intended purpose of sexual repression, but rather drives sexual expression underground and into the shadows of ignorance. It is an ethic which is based on misinterpretation and false application of the biblical text and on cultural and philosophical biases imported into Christian teaching from other sources.

The driving of sexual expression underground by religious repression is at least part of the stimulus to the ignorance, irresponsible behavior and tease and titillation which characterize our society. It is the viewing of sexuality in these ways that has prevented the learning of true intimacy, even in partnerships which may experience great sex.

We affirm that our sexuality is a natural gift from God. It should not be artificially restricted by regulation. God honors a free sexual expression that seeks the enjoyment and good of the each person, and the glory to God as He participates with us in this glorious aspect of living and loving others, ourselves and God. In our scriptural understanding, a New Testament biblical argument cannot be made against most cases of consensual sexual pleasure sharing, whether premarital, marital, or postmarital.

Genesis 1: 27-28 – “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number;”

Sex is good and right and pure. It was created by a loving, imaginative God for procreation and pleasure.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them, God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Genesis 1:27, 31.

THERE IS NO COMMANDMENT in the Bible regarding masturbation. In spite of what you thought I might say, I AM NOT SAYING THAT MASTURBATION IS WRONG. The Bible doesn't say that. In the absence of a clear command from God, we must always be careful of creating condemnation where God never intended it.
Religion / Re: Say No To Religion! Science Is The Truth by Reverend(m): 11:51am On Feb 02, 2008
Science is the truth for sure, religion is a way of dealing with the truth and maintaining hope for a better future. Just as we created the atom bomb, we also created atomic power stations to provide electricity.

In every negative there is a positive.

We all have faith that scientists will continue to discover and invent to improve our lives.

Rename science as God or vice versa and you probably have the answer we are all looking for cheesy cheesy

Someone out their is looking out for us (God / Science).

That someone could have been Alexander Flemming who invented penecillin and saved millions of lives or Louis Pasteur for example.

Maybe God is a generic name for all the people that have and will in the future do good for mankind wink wink

Religion = Faith in Humanity

@Gamine

Take an example of the Catholic church who focus everything on the creator and look at all the terrible sex crimes that have been committed by the men of the cloth.

The problem is that we are pandering to man made rules concerning our sexuality which have nothing to do with God.
