Fashion/Clothing Market / Calling All Lagos Based Ladies by TheBBF(f): 6:19pm On Mar 22, 2012
Hi Ladies, I am trying to find good salons in Lagos oh and I need help. I am not looking for salons that are good at installing weaves, or braids oh! I'm looking for salons that are good at styling and caring for the hair on our head.(the hair the good Lord blessed us with). Professional stylist!

A number of my blog followers keep asking me if I know any good salons in Lagos, that can help them properly care for their real hair. Unfortunately I am yet to find one, So I need help finding one that I can visit and try. I recently met a woman with long beautiful hair, and she said she got her hair done at Day Spa Salon and another one near Federal Palace in VI, but I can't remember the name.

I would really appreciate the input thanks!

maryini: Ladies, what do I do to thining crown hair to make it grow, I am in my very early twenties and should not be suffering from baldness now.

This problem started when I used an organic root stimulator relaxer that came with a dye shampoo, before i could say Jack Robinson all d hair in the middle of my head fell off, I gathered up courage and shaved all of it off to start growing from scratch. Its now getting to a year and the hair at the middle is still not growing! Please help! *Sobs* My hair is makin me ashamed,

Have you tried jamaican black castor oil? This stuff is amazing for hair growth. just google it with black hair care, the reviews are all positive. I myself use it as a growth aid, and it makes my hair grow so quickly. If you are in the UK or US it should be relatively easy to find. If you are based in Nigeria, send me an email so I can tell you where to get some! smiley
Fashion / Re: Why Do Women Of African Descent Relax/perm Their Beautiful Hair by TheBBF(f): 2:02pm On Dec 13, 2011
Na wa oh!! It upsets me when I keep seeing posts like this. Not to be rude but I don't see why anyone would care what anybody else does to their hair and/or the reasons behind it. Its disturbing when I see comments like black women relax because of self hate, and the white woman's influence, but to me that is just not true. Every race changes their hair! White women who were born with bone straight hair get it permed ( the opposite of what we call a relaxer) and white women with extremely course and curly hair straighten their hair. It's called fashion and beauty. For hundreds of years the white woman has been altering her hair, by using wigs, presses, and rollers to change the appearance of her hair. Nobody called it self hate, so why when we do it, its called self hate?

I understand that for the longest time, black women didn't know how to take care of our natural hair, so we started relaxing to make it easier to manage (those who did it for self hate reasons thats there business!). But now black women are becoming more educated about their hair, and they are learning how to manage it in either its natural or relaxed state. I think this amazing because more and more women are learning that taking care of afro-natural hair is not the painful nightmare that we believe. I am relaxed and even I have learned to grow my relaxed hair and take better care of it, and I blog about it to help other learn too. I am now also more educated about natural hair, and I believe I will transition to natural one day. But for right now I am enjoying my longer relaxed hair. Is it because, I want to be like a white woman? Ermmm I really don't think so. I like the look and the ease of it. But I also like the natural look as well.

I mean I try not to take comments like "you relax because of self hatred" personal, but I don't judge other people based on their personal preference or style, so I don't see why others take it upon themselves to judge other people or make assumptions, about random strangers you know nothing about. Its possible that relaxers were invented to make black women more acceptable in white society. But so? that doesn't mean generations later we all still want to be white.

Yeah, but its so hard finding the green label now though for cream of nature. I tried their coconut and sunflower shampoo (orate bottle), and even though it has sulphates it wasn't stripping. Not as good as the green label though, but manageable.

Ok I feel left out. I am not natural I still relax my hair, but even though relaxed hair requires a slightly different regimen from natural hair it is still possible to grow it!!! So again both natural ladies and relaxed ladies, lets grow this hair! Long hair isn't just for non-blacks anymore!!! grin cool cool grin

I've been growing my hair for over 2 years and see how far I've come:

There are so many resources out there that teach black hair care. it is possible, lol sorry I am getting excited again, lol

pslm23:

In my opinion, I think the main problem with our Nigerian hair stylists is that they do not have the proper training required. We need proper beauty schools in Nigeria that will teach these young women everything that needs to be taught about relaxers, hot combs, flat irons, braiding, texturizers, weaves etc.

A proper course on Hair Styling 101 should last at least 6 months and at the end of their training, a certificate will be issued. Nobody should be allowed to just open a hair dressing salon without proper credentials because they were apprentices or learnt from their "aunty". It's time that Nigerians wake up and look around them and try to do things the way it should be done.

We take our lives for granted everyday. We expose our health to cancer causing chemicals and other stuff because we trust that the person handling our hair/scalp is a real professional. Washing someone's hair with just one bucket of water after relaxing is just plain wrong! Hair breakge, loss and possible infections from having that chemical remain on your hair/scalp will surely happen. For all of you using relaxers and trusting these in-experienced girls to apply these chemicals on your hair, y'all need to find and watch a documentary Chris Rock did on the dangers of the stuff we black women put in our hair especially relaxers. The documentary is called Good Hair and you can watch the full thing online at www.youtube.com.

Even the women braiding in the markets, how often do the sterilize the pointy looking stick the use to part the hair? people can catch ringworm and other nasty scalp infections from un-sterilized equipments. The same goes for barber shops.

Let me not even start about the chemist shop in the corner! how many of them studied Pharmacology or even graduated University?

Enuff said!

Kai!!! @ that ring worm comment, na wa oh I didn't even think that far. lipsrsealed

It so funny that when I started this topic it was just for fun to hear crazy hairdresser experiences. But now as I read through the responses I realize something serious: There might be very few or close to none qualified and educated hairdressers in Nigeria. shocked I remember hearing conversations about how African Americans have better hair or that if you live in America you hair will grow, blah blah. And to some extent that is true, but why it that? I realized that in the US there are trained beauticians/ cosmetologist that understand the science behind hair care and no how to make it thrive.

If a Nigerian hairdresser actually new the dangerous chemicals in a relaxer and the long term damage it could have on you hair and scalp they would not even contemplate conserving water when washing one out. Na wa oh.

Anyway like a previous poster said I have been doing my own hair now for 3 years and I have done more than well for myself. But even though I have successfully done my own hair that doesn't make me qualified to do any one elses. I can only give advice and tips based on what works for me. which is why I !have set up a blog to help my friends and others with their hair issues. This is serious sha. One can't say "Oya everybody! Start doing your hair yourself!" not everyone has the time or the know how, plus we can't put all the hair dressers in Nigeria out of business. But how do you train or educate them? what is the point of having or going to salon that make you break out in to a cold sweat whenever its time to relax, loosen, or braid your hair? hmmmmm I don't know.

follypimpi:

My hair no dey grow again oo, I need help. I go for hair treatment twice a month yet it feels like is not growing.

@follypimpi don't worry if you are relaxing you hair that means your hair is still growing. What is happening is that your hair is breaking as quickly as it grows. You need to find out what is causing the breakage and stop it. You said you go for a treatment twice a month, what kind of treatment? black hair is prone to dryness and breaking you have to be careful how you treat your hair. I could write an fill up this whole page on black hair care. But we should start from the basics, How do you take care of your hair:

How often do you wash?
How often do you steam?
What product do you use?

madoba:

Let me see

1. Expecting a tip when they've failed to do a good job

2. Openly soliciting for tips

3. Arguing with me the customer and putting up a sour face when I express my displeasure with the way they are handling my hair.

4. Watching TV/African Magic and at the same time trying to make my hair or do my nails. I never let them get away with this one, Serioulsy!!! how can anyone do a good job when their attention is divided between work and TV

5. Over-using and wasting my hair products while being miserly with the saloon's products

6. Not rinsing my hair thoroughly because they are trying to conserve water

The list just goes on, this days I have a mini saloon at home where I do practically everything by myself except braid.
The drama from hair dressers is just too much but the male ones are cool though.

Hmm you are not the only one. because of so many bad experiences and hair loss. I started doing my hair myself at home. It is just not worth the headache!

@blank  shocked shocked shocked when you relax? ahhhh I no go gree!!!! they would have to go and find water. Please if they didn't have enough water why did they agree to relax the hair in the first place. Nigerian hairdressers oh!

There was one time I had a huge knot in my hair, and the girl literally took the small comb and yanked it out! angry I couldn't believe it. Then she said sorry with attitude,
Fashion / What Do Hair Dressers Do That Really Annoy You? by TheBBF(f): 2:29pm On Aug 03, 2011
The thing that annoys me the most with my hair dresser is: When I bring a new treatment to try she does exactly what the instructions say not to do. Eg. Strengthening treatment says apply to hair and DO NOT COMB, rinse out after 10 minutes. Why does she then proceed to try and comb my hair? angry. She will now argue with me and say that the treatment "won't enter" if she doesn't comb it . you would think that the person who that wrote the instructions was daft. It drives me nuts how sometimes they just don't listen.

No worries  wink. I am actually surprised no one else has any suggestions. I know this is slightly off topic, but I've always wondered what palm oil can do for your skin, I guess cos its so orange and  would probably stain your skin no one wants to find out. I know its random, lollllll but its a natural oil shouldn't have some value, ?

Sorry Inked Nerd, I was trying to edit my response yesterday and my computer froze, lol so my message is a little choppy. I wasn't addressing you directly I was trying to say "I agree with Inked Nerd, " smiley. Anyway I agree with you on the natural oils. I've never used Bio-oil but everybody raves about it so hey if it works, I guess it works. I personally have a love hate relationship with mineral oil. Getting in to skin care and hair care you learn mineral is not the best stay away, I can't tell you the number of times I've used a product be it for skin or for hair, and its worked so well for me, only for me to find out it has mineral oil in it angry. It can be really annoying. Oh Well, I guess all we can do is give recommendations, like you said what may work for one, might not work for another.
Fashion / Re: Best Solution For Stretch Marks by TheBBF(f): 5:07pm On Aug 01, 2011
I heard that Bio-oil was really good. Ink Nerd, look for a body oil that have a combo of almond oil, jojoba, olive oil, sunflower oil and avocado oils etc. they all work in conjunction to heal and repair the skin.

Ok, well I found the s-curl in one beauty supply store on Awolowo Rd in Ikoyi, and I have to say this is a fantastic moisturizer! It made my hair incredibly soft. I liked it so much I had to blog about it. lol. Anyway I really recommend this product as a daily moisturizer, especially if you have dry hair, and most of us do smiley.

I think the name of the store is called Total Beauty, I'm not sure, number 47 Awolowo rod sha.
Fashion / Re: Help Help: Hair Breakage I Am Turning Bald In The Front Of My Hair by TheBBF(f): 3:59pm On Jul 30, 2011
I agree with Sulesule. You have to make sure the hair you leave out when you install a weave, is well maintained and moisturized. But I would also like to point out that oil doesn't moisturize the only thing that can actually moisturize or hydrate your hair is water. So make sure the first ingredient in your hair cream is water. Oils seal in moisture, but they can also seal out moisture, suffocating your hair, so be careful with hair oils and creams.

the reason I said shea butter and castor oil is because of their healing properties, and both are meant to be applied to the scalp only. Not the hair. If you apply them to your hair you run the risk of build up which will suffocate your hair and ultimately cause breakage. So be careful.
Fashion / Re: Help Help: Hair Breakage I Am Turning Bald In The Front Of My Hair by TheBBF(f): 7:18pm On Jul 29, 2011
Yes castor oil can be left on, you just need to make sure to use it sparingly. However that being said, you do need to wash your hair more frequently when using it. you should apply it every other day 3x a week, then wash your hair at least once a week. If you find the castor oil to heavy for your scalp dilute it with extra virgin olive oil (the cooking kind) 50% olive oil and 50% castor oil.

If you are wearing a weave and since you are just putting it on your hairline, you can actually just wash your hairline area only. castor oil is extremely thick so you may want to wash your hair and scalp more frequently to prevent clogging and build up on your scalp.

Fashion / Re: Help Help: Hair Breakage I Am Turning Bald In The Front Of My Hair by TheBBF(f): 11:24am On Jul 29, 2011
Bald? Ok First things first, you need to determine what is causing you to lose hair. What hair styles do you normally wear? You have to be careful of certain hairstyles and the way they are done. Certain styles cause damage to your hairline. For example ghana weaving and braids. If either styles are worn for too long or done too tight, they can destroy your hairline. Also how often you style your hair this way could damage your hair line. Sometimes its just good to let your hairline rest.

Some people also have weak hairlines so the slightest tension or stress there can affect it. Make sure you keep your hairline well moisturized so that it can thrive. Sometimes you have to pay special attention to that area. Try getting raw shea butter and rubbing just a little bit on your hairline each night. The healing qualities of shea butter can help repair damaged follicles. Another remedy is castor oil. You can get castor oil in any pharmacy; apply a little castor oil to your hairline at night and watch for improvements.

But remember you also need to take care of your whole hair. Try and wash and deep condition your hair more frequently, this will improve the overall health of your hair. And avoid styles that pull and stress your hairline.

I agree Shea butter is very good for hair care. Its emollient and nourishing properties make hair soft an shiny. Look for moisturizers and creams that have Shea butter and other natural oils instead of mineral oil or petroleum

Avoid products like Pink Oil, and other mineral oil based products, as all they do is suffocate your scalp and hair.
Fashion / Re: Black Hair Does Grow. Let's Prove It! by TheBBF(f): 2:41pm On Jul 28, 2011
Hi Kushkush!

A good moisturizer contains water/aqua as the first ingredient on the list. Note that that the only thing that can hydrate or moisturize you hair is water.

Another key ingredient is an emollient also an oil (but you can find oil free moisturizers) the oils are used to soften and lubricate the hair,  try and avoid products that have mineral oil or petroleum.

A good moisturizer should have humectants. humectants are substances that attract water to the hair. Eg, glycerin, honey, and Aloe Vera are good humectants

So look for moisturizers that have at least:

1) Water as the first ingredient
2) Oils like Jojoba, coconut, olive, avocado, Shea butter, coco butter etc and
3) Humectants like glycerin

I hope this helps.

Fashion / Re: Best Skin Lightening/toning Soap by TheBBF(f): 12:50pm On Jul 28, 2011
I see a lot of hate post on skin lightening, and I find it quite strange. People make comments that we should embrace our dark skin, and we should stop trying to be white, blah blah. I just wanted to state that there is a difference between skin lightening/brightening and skin bleaching. I am not an advocate of skin bleaching in any way or form. I believe it is quite dangerous to bleach your skin to entirely different color in fact no safe skin lightening product can do that. only harsh chemicals can bleach a person over 3 shades.

Anyway my point is just because a person wants to use a skin lightener doesn’t mean they want to bleach. Hyperpigmentation/skin discoloration is a real skin disorder and in some or most cases can be unsightly, which is why women use tons of concealer, foundation, and powder to cover it up. Skin lighteners are there to help people reduce skin discoloration and have a more uniform and flawless complexion. What is wrong with wanting to have smooth even skin? Our skin produces more melanin than other races which is what make us dark, and what protects us from the sun. But the sun can also cause us to produce excess melanin, which causes skin discoloration. In fact out of all the races we are the ones most prone to skin discoloration. The only way combat skin discoloration is with the use of skin lighteners and sunscreen.

As much as I would like to say only sunscreen can do the job. No it can't. Sometimes lighteners and exfoliators must be used to combat the worst of discoloration. Safe skin lighteners generally prevent excess melanin from generating. This allows a person who uses it wisely to maintain the complexion they were meant to be or born with.

A darker skinned beauty who uses skin lighteners and toners to maintain her lovely milk chocolate complexion just because she doesn’t want to turn to dark chocolate, or have dark chocolate patches all over her face; should she be accused of trying to be white or bleaching?, Hmmmm Na wa oh. I know that there are some people out there who want to bleeeeeeaaaaaacccccccchhhhhh!!!!, lol and that is their prerogative. But I think it is unfair to judge a person because they want to use a skin lightener, or tone up their skin.

I am not trying to offend anyone or start and argument with this post oh! I just wanted to give my opinion on the issue.

Kushkush I noticed you said something about Ghana weaving. Please be careful when you do it next time. Ghana weaving is notorious for abolishing peoples' hairline, lol. Make sure the next time you do it, you tell the person braiding not to hold the front of your hair too tight, or that they should do brush in front.

Extra virgin coconut oil seems to be a rare commodity in this Lagos I won't lie to you. I know Health Plus Pharmacy used to carry it, but I am not sure they still do. I get my coconut oil from the Health Plus in GRA on Issac John Street, It's located in the Adebola Shopping Plaza/Mall.

If you can't find extra virgin coconut oil, use extra virgin olive oil instead, its easier to find. But make sure you buy the cooking grade. You can find the olive oil in any food super market.
