COMMUNIQUÉ ARISING FROM THE EMERGENCY MEETING OF SOUTH EAST GOVERNORS AT THE EXCO CHAMBERS, GOVERNMENT HOUSE, ENUGU, ON FRIDAY, 15TH SEPTEMBER, 2017

In view of the prevailing security situation in the South East and its attendant consequences, the South East Governors hereby resolve as follows:

1. All activities of IPOB are hereby proscribed. IPOB and all other aggrieved groups are advised to articulate their position on all National issues and submit to the Committee of Governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo and National Assembly Members from the South East Zone, through the Chairman, South East Governors Forum.

2. All Governors of South East Zone are to ensure compliance in their respective State.

3. South East Governors Forum, Ohaneze Ndigbo and National Assembly Members do hereby reinforce their commitment to a united and indivisible Nigeria.

4. We also reinforce our desire for the restructuring of Nigeria where all National issues will be discussed and amicably settled to achieve justice and fairness to every Nigerian.

5. We reiterate our earlier position that the November 18, 2017 Governorship election in Anambra State must hold.

6. Accordingly, we appeal to Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR to please, withdraw the Military in the South East Zone, while Police perform their traditional role of maintaining law and order.

7. South East Governors have taken concrete steps to protect lives and property of indigenes and non-indigenes in the South East.

8. We are in touch with the Northern Governors Forum, they have assured us of the safety of all our people living in the north and we have also planned for exchange of visits between the Governors and to re-enforce the confidence of Nigerians in this respect.

9. In keeping with our earlier position, we wish to assure Nigerians that full investigation is ongoing on all allegations of killings, maiming and other unlawful conduct in the South East Zone within this period. The Governors and the Security agencies are in agreement that appropriate action will be taken against anyone found culpable.

10. We advise all residents of the South East to go about their normal businesses as Government of each State is committed to protecting everyboby.

11. Finally, we advise our people in the South East to please be Law abiding.

Wife of Gilbert Nnaji, the senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District and the Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, Mrs. Ann Nnaji.

According to a statement by Egbon Mon-Charles, the Senator’s Media Adviser, Mrs. Nnaji died in a foreign hospital after a long battle with an undisclosed ailment.

“It is with heavy heart that I announce the unfortunate passing away of Lady Ann Nnaji, wife of Senator Gilbert Nnaji, Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications.

“According to her husband, she was a virtuous woman, praying wife, pillar of support, dedicated mother and a caring sister who will be missed as long as I live.‎ May her gentle soul rest in peace,” the statement said.‎

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has expressed sadness over the demise of the wife of the Enugu-born politician.

In reaction, Ekweremadu described the late Mrs. Nnaji as a gentlewoman, who led a pious life of service to God and humanity.


He said: “I received with deep sense of grief, the passing on of this amazon.

“She was a virtuous woman, an organiser and a dependable wife, who stood by her husband in thick and thin. She was kindness personified and served God and humanity till her last breath. She will be sorely missed.

“I, therefore, send heartfelt condolences to my brother and friend, Senator Gil Nnaji, the good people of Enugu East Senatorial District in particular, and Enugu State in general on this sad loss.”

Ekweremadu prayed God to grant the deceased a peaceful repose and her family and the people of Enugu State the inner strength to bear the irreparable loss.

The Nigerian Police Force Enugu State Command, have foiled a supposed war between the youths of Ozala Community and Fulani Herdsmen.
Information reaching Coalcity, was that the war was initiated after a Farmer Ndubueze Oboro of Ozalla, who went to farm was attacked while in the farm by Fulani Herdsmen. He was inflicted with various machete wounds, even went further to cutting off his limbs. He was allegedly rescued by fellow villagers who heard his cry and ran to rescue him. On sighting the villagers, the fulani herdsmen took to their heels.
News of the incident reached the villagers, and in turn angered the village youths who went on a blood hound for the fulani herdsmen. Unfortunatly for one Abdulraham Usman, who was caught by the irrate villagers and was pounced on. He was beaten mercilessly but was later rescued by the Command Policemen.
Meanwhile policemen have been deployed to the community to keep the town safe.

The emergence of Dr. Tony Nwoye as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC came as a shock to many political pundits.
It was especially so, given the calibre of the persons he beat to win the ticket of the ruling party to contest the forthcoming election.
Among the more formidable rivals were former governor of the state, Senator Andy Uba who is serving his second term as senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District and Chief George Moghalu, the long time national auditor of the former All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP and subsequently, the APC. Nwoye: APC candidate, praises his “boss” Andy Uba in victory Among the vanquished were also some of the financially well-heeled personalities including Engr. Bart Nwibe and Dr. Obinna Uzor.
Also remarkable was the scale of the victory. Dr. Nwoye polled 2,146 votes representing about 46% of the total votes cast in the race that comprised about 11 aspirants.
The nearest to him, Senator Uba, polled 931 votes representing about 20% of the total votes cast.
The outcome of the votes has really shocked the political landscape.
It was even more shocking given that Dr. Nwoye was until about two years ago, not a member of the party.
He was not a member when the delegates for the election who were essentially party executives were elected in 2014. However, Dr. Nwoye by several accounts is no stranger to the political landscape.
He was the immediate past candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the 2012 election.
His performance in that election where he took second position despite the lack of support from the national chapter of the party and the then president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was amazing.
Associates of Dr. Nwoye at that time noted that when President Jonathan visited to handover the PDP flag to Nwoye that he at that time told party members to vote according to their conscience, deliberately avoided promoting or hyping his party candidate apparently due to the chummy relationship between him and the then governor of the state, Mr. Peter Obi who it is claimed, had sold his own candidate standing on the ticket of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA to the then president.
Having overcome internal opposition to place second, many at that time affirmed that Nwoye was bound to go higher.
A former national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and a medical doctor, the 42 year old Nwoye by several accounts had in the past been a key component of some of the governorship elections in the state, notably being the chairman of the state chapter of the PDP when Uba won his pyrrhic victory in 2007.
His emergence as the candidate of the APC, however, came against the background of some past political setbacks including a failed inauguration into the House of Representatives in 2011/12 after judicial victories that affirmed his election.
It was a surprise to many when without campaigning and with few knowing that he contested and won the 2015 election to represent Anambra East/West Federal Constituency.
At 42, he is about the youngest in the contest ( the PDP governorship primary was ongoing as at press time), a factor that is bound to advance his case in the light of increasing agitation for a more youthful person to come to position of authority in the state.
The Nwoye campaign it was gathered, is set to brandish his role in campaigning and stemming the tide of cultism during his time as NANS president as a selling point.
“We have the records to show what Tony did as NANS president in curbing cultism in Nigerian universities and especially at the University of Nigeria, UNN for which authorities of the university have continued to show appreciation,” a campaign insider revealed to 042report.
What had been said was a disadvantage for Dr. Nwoye was that he may not be that wealthy given the fact that governorship contests in Anambra State is seen as the preserve of multi billionaires.
However, for a man who was able to defeat several multibillionaires to grab the APC ticket, the potentials for Nwoye it is said, remain achievable. “Nwoye was able to win delegates to support him despite the fact that when the delegates were elected in 2014, he was not a member of the party and this shows his capacity to persuade voters,” a campaign associate also revealed. However, the ultimate conflict is the battle between him and Governor Willie Obiano, the flag bearer of the APGA who also has the power of incumbency on his side.

Ghanaian Reggae musician Ekow Micah quoted the Holy Bible and cited an instance where God smoked marijuana popularly known as weed.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has commended the federal government for the decision to site one of the six campuses of the proposed ICT University in Enugu.

Gov. Ugwuanyi spoke when the Honourable Minister of Communications, Barrister Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu paid a courtesy visit to the Government House, Enugu and addressed members of the State Executive Council (EXCO).

The governor told the Honourable Minister that the state was delighted at his mission to the state, “to promote the importance of ICT as a key tool for youth empowerment as well as the overall socio-economic advancement of the nation”.

The governor who led the Minister and his entourage accompanied by the Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, noted that his administration has endeavoured to put in place, an ICT policy that envisages a positive and prosperous future for the people of the State, adding that the state government will leverage on various ICT tools and solutions to create wealth and improve service delivery.

Gov. Ugwuanyi through the endorsement of the State Executive Council (EXCO) approved a land request presented by the Minister for the expansion of the University site located at the former Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) at Ibagwa Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area.

He equally applauded the Ministry of Communications for the efforts and initiatives it has so far taken towards the realization of its broad mandate of building a knowledge-based economy using ICT as the key driver, saying that the Enugu State stands to benefit tremendously from the ICT University.

The governor pledged his administration’s “firm support and commitment to the successful implementation of programmes or initiatives by your Ministry or other agencies, designed to facilitate the attainment of our national targets and aspirations in the ICT sector”, adding that “Enugu State is strategically positioned to partner the Federal Government in ensuring the success and sustainability of the ICT revolution in Nigeria”.

Earlier in his address, the Minister informed the governor and other EXCO members that he was in the state on a facility tour of the site of the proposed first ICT University being established by the federal government to enhance ICT growth in the country.

Barrister Shittu who commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for his giant strides in Enugu State, disclosed that the University, whose campuses are being established in the six geo-political zones of the country, will be run as a Public Private Partnership venture, adding that a memo for the approval has been sent for the Federal Executive Council’s attention.

He made a request for a parcel of land to enable the federal government expand the University, which he said has taken over the premises and facilities of the Digital Bridge Institute in Enugu and solicited more support and cooperation from the state government for speedy take off of the institution.

Earlier in his address, the Minister informed the governor and other EXCO members that he was in the state on a facility tour of the site of the proposed first ICT University being established by the federal government to enhance ICT growth in the country.

Barrister Shittu who commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for his giant strides in Enugu State, disclosed that the University, whose campuses are being established in the six geo-political zones of the country, will be run as a Public Private Partnership venture, adding that a memo for the approval has been sent for the Federal Executive Council’s attention.

He made a request for a parcel of land to enable the federal government expand the University, which he said has taken over the premises and facilities of the Digital Bridge Institute in Enugu and solicited more support and cooperation from the state government for speedy take off of the institution.

Gov. Ugwuanyi advocates peaceful, transparent and successful LG elections

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has called on the people of the State to offer prayers for the successful conduct of the upcoming local government elections that will be adjudged as "one of the most peaceful, free and fair elections in the history of the State".

Gov. Ugwuanyi made the call at the grand finale of the prayer tour of the 260 electoral wards and 17 local government areas of the State organized by Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Prayer Organization held at Udenu council headquarters.

The governor appreciated the main purpose of the Group, which he said "is to promote the essence and importance of prayer in all that we do as a people –for, without God, we can do nothing", stressed that "prayer is certainly the key to all things that are good"

He added that prayer is also the key to peace and security in the State as well as "prosperity, good health and happiness of our people and it is the key to good governance and responsible leadership", affirming that "prayer has been and will remain our sustenance in Jesus Name. Amen".

Gov. Ugwuanyi expressed gratitude to God for the peaceful conduct and successful conclusion of the tour and the blessings it has brought to the State and equally thanked the Director General of the Group, Engr. Chris Ugwu, the Coordinators and members of the group in all the local governments and wards, for their commitment and sacrifices.

The governor also appreciated the Bishops and leaders of various denominations as well as Priests, Pastors, Evangelists, Prophets and Ministers of God, for their spiritual support and physical presence throughout the tour, saying that his administration is "indebted to Enugu Stakeholders in all the local governments and the wards for the unremitting support and cooperation they offered us during the tour".

"As we have gathered here to celebrate the power of prayer, I wish to reiterate our unwavering commitment and determination to fulfill our promises to the people of Enugu State- the true heroes of democracy- and to do all that is necessary and possible, to take the state to greater heights.

"I urge us therefore, to remain steadfast in our prayers, for we are confident that with God on our side and with your continued support, our dreams for Enugu State shall surely come to fruition in Jesus Name. Amen", Gov. Ugwuanyi prayed.

During the intercessory prayer session, the clergy declared the event as "a prophetic and spiritual endorsement of Gov. Ugwuanyi for re-election in 2019", assuring him of their support and continued prayers.

The clergy noted that Ugwuanyi is the first governor of Enugu State to initiate a programme for prayers, devote time for God and commences every activity by calling "the God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob and the awesome God of David".

"We will continue to pray with you and for you. We have seen so many things God has used you to do in Enugu State. We urge you to be courageous. The sky is your limit".
