Guk: The Ojora of Ijora land, Oba Fatai Oyeyinka Ojora on Monday declared the support of the Ojora Chieftaincy family for the plans of the state government to develop a Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme on the wide expanse of land in Iganmu Alawo in Ijora.

Addressing a press conference at his palace in Ijora on the issue, the monarch said the present state of facilities in the area is not conducive to exist in, adding that it lacks the major infrastructural facilities.

He explained that the area has become a nuisance and that some eight to ten years ago, the former administration in the state demolished the shanties that were in the area but that the structures returned after some time.

The Oba appealed to the residents of Iganmu Alawo to cooperate with the State Government on the proposed housing project, adding that it would be of immense benefit to the whole community and the state.

Chai! When someone that was meant to protect you, sell you out to your tormentors.

I don't think it makes any difference..

How foolish of you to say such.
A young man has just lost his ticket to a better tomorrow and you dismiss his aspirations so wickedly. May such inhumane acts befall your children if such is your wish for one born of a woman.

I am so far sitting on a ledge on this issue, here is a slum which needs to be addressed however to do so without any alternative location for the inhabitants to reorganise their lives and move forward is evil.
This people would either move on to the next slum and build another illegal structure, live under bridges polluting the environment or die out of hardship and sickness.

Have you ever wondered what mega cities around the world do to address shelter for poor populations they build large housing complexes multi storey building .They are not fancy just simple structures.
Meagre payments are required.

Lagos has to at some stage consider this solution.

Who is to be blamed? I told one of my colleagues who live in Ajegunle about the demolition of Badia. He said the place needs to be demolished. I asked him, why? He said, that the place is not meant for sane person,
We all blame fashola but I believe in him. He knows what he's doing. He must have gathered unpleasant reports before the demolition of that place.

No matter how many unpleasant reports the right and due process should still be followed. The affected individuals should be notified and given time to relocate.

Dude i understand what you are saying but i tell you that if government had told those people to relocate to somewhere at Badagry, most of them would have said no.

If they were told and said no it would've been better because in so doing an alternative has been provided one which would have to suffice until they can get a legal shelter of their choosing. In this scenario people woke up to destruction of the little piece of comfort they had without prior notification.

Truckpusher: Lagos wasn't meant for everyone ...........it's high time we begin to realize that for any meaningful development to take place lots of sacrifices must be made and of course the poor people will bear the consequences ,they shouldn't murmur but accept it as a part they played in building a better nation for their future generation this is where patriotism comes into play.

What have you done for your nation to claim patriotism. Since the children of the poor have to sacrifice their future and serve the like of you till the end.

I had been in a situation like this before. Wen an aunt of mine was stayin at kilo side of surulere, d house was properly structured and everybody cud seen d house is bcomin dangerous to live in cos d house was bent. Everybody in d house was served a notice like 6mnths b4 d house was demolished.....and as at d time wen d action was taken, sum occupants were stil there. Instead of the insults and curses, why not move your family into one of these slums to show solidarity that it's a great place to live.

When you are done doing that, also come up with any sane plan from how much money you have to borrow the state to build free houses for millions of illegal settlers and also what you can set aside to continue building free houses for the new thousands entering lagos daily.

Cursing and insults is one thing unintelligent people know how to do, making sense and formulating good ideas and solutions is what they don't know hoe to do.

A man cannot live without a reasonable amount of sentiment and emotions.
I apologise for the insult.
I can't claim I am not shocked that such an environment had not been torn down and addressed long time ago but we can't just take fellow humans and render them homeless without options. It is never done like so,Even if the alternative is not in the immediate vicinity of the slum, a stop gap settlement would suffice.

But I can't apologise for my reaction to how you dismissed the man's loss of documents that can pave the road to a better slum-free future.

I still need you to answer yes or no if such filth and living conditions is ok for any human being to call home and should be tolerated or allowed to exist by any responsible government.

I also still need you to tell me where the money to reward illegal activities going to come from.

The reality remains that the government is still struggling to provide for millions of taxpayers so where is the sense in diverting billions of scarce resources to reward millions of illegal settlers and law breakers in so many slums around Lagos state.

People make choices in life ad we all have to live with whatever choices we made.

Sentiments and emotions doesn't solve anything, it's just an expression of feelings.

See wat a responsible government does for its pple...President Hugo Chavez issued Presidential Decree 1666 in February 2002, providing a legal basis for Urban Land Committees (Comités de Tierras Urbanas, CTUs) to be formed.[46] These develop land titling in urban areas. Under the February 2002 decree, local committees (representing 100-200 families) may apply to a government office for the local "barrio" residents to be given property title for state-owned land they have informally occupied on a long-term basis. The committees operate on the principle of participatory democracy, and create maps of the local area, on the basis of which (after official verification) land titles are drawn up.[46] By mid 2005, there were around 5000 CTUs, representing around 5m Venezuelans, and the government had issued over 84,000 titles to 126,000 families, benefiting about 630,000 inhabitants (out of a total urban poor population of around 10m).[47] By October 2006 the government said that over 200,000 titles had been assigned, benefiting about 1m inhabitants.[48]

During the past decade under Chavez, the income poverty rate in Venezuela dropped by more than half, from 54% of households below poverty level in the first half of 2003, down to 26% at the end of 2008. "Extreme poverty" fell even more - by 72%.

I am begining to view most staunch ACN supporters from the SW as closeted tribalists and pretenders. See how most of you are quick to talk about sacrifices, yet JEG towed this same line of argument and you all poured out on the streets of OJOTA and started a Las Vagas styled show only to throw insults at Jonathan and win some cheap political points but in reality, we all knew it was a neccessary evil we had to confront.
If you are in the oil and gas sector you will know this, it was with this understanding that most people in the Eastern region shunned that protest. It was more of a sentimental and greedy protest to continue status quo than any honest fight for the poor.

Now a gross violation of people's right to exist is being perpetrated by their favourite man and they have all thrown caution and moderation into the wind to support a gang style take over in the name of cleaning up the place.

Subsidy bill rose from 256 billion to more than 2 Trillion Naira in under 4 years and GEJ was right to seek to stop that. But Nigerians wonder how the figure grew from under $2 billion to over $8 billion in 3 years. We non know . Yet the petroleum mininister is still in office and no one in prison. The reality is GEJ himself did not understand what was going on.Ngozi Okonjo Iweala came into office and by that time the subsidy was 2 trillion. I want to believe she acted in good faith. But how did it get to that figure.

Nigerians were being asked to make sacrifices to the tune of $8 billion for money that was being stolen. Sadly the fuel subsidy debacle is NOT a good example to use if you want to fight GEJ's battle. How come the subsidy bill has come down so abruptly in 12 months. Can anyone help us by telling us the latest figure??

So JEG should have first maintained that such obscene payment continues while an investigation is launched into it, right?
The fuel subsidy is a very apt example here, in Jonathan's case it was very justified to stop such payment. How you choose to interprete is not Jonathan's Wahala, people in the east were already paying that much while fraudulent Oil marketers who were mostly business men from the SW and the north were busy undermining the system and selling fuel outside Nigeria's borders.
There was no talk of sacrificing then but now just because folks want to defend Fashola's high-handedness in the matter, they are talking about sacrifices, what has Govt done for those common folks there? That place is like that not because they love to live in such deplorable conditions but because there is no presence of any government efforts there. 2. Your Venezuela analogy and the story means nothing when it comes to Lagos state. It's absolutely irrelevant.

3. It is ok if your idea of helping illegal settlers is to let them exist in slums, in disease, let them eat and drink human waste, let them pollute the environment and the lagoon with toxic waste, but no human being should be allowed to live in such deplorable and abominable conditions poor or not.

So, you are wrong, that place is no place for your dog to live talk less you and your family.

It's really warped and thoughtless to suggest that the government should legalize their stay in that horrible mess and existence.
