kross_01: my only regrets so far frm d comments i've seen so far on this thread are frm those screaming 'go to your village'.these people u r asking to go to their villages are actually being chased out from their village but because we all already have that mentality that only aliens stay in slums in lagos, it dsnt matter hw they get treated. a responsible government does not jst go demolishing settlements without notification or even b4 relocating or compensating them.i for one dnt condone slums but for all it mataz those guys are humans & nt animals.
Bro indigenes don't live in slums, they live in crowded villages like Otto and other smaller settlements.
No matter how filthy a place is in Lagos, once there is a recognized traditional ruler in this place, the government will enforce environmental laws, but will never demolish such place, so get your facts right.
Have you ever being to any of these slums to see the way of life there, this is not a way to live, not even for animals.

Ladies and gentlemen of Nairaland, I am really impressed with the amount of brainstorming that goes on here.

I have hope in you Nigeria, I have hope in you. Many of you have proven that amidst this epidemic of corrupting we still have folks with a heart of flesh pumping warm blood.

Let it be known, everyone that is involved in raping Nigeria will pay for it, either in this life or the one to come.

1. Nothing about my response was uncivil. The quote below was my response and so kindly show me the insult. Insults means you are a juvenile and your only form of expression is insults.

2. Your Venezuela analogy and the story means nothing when it comes to Lagos state. It's absolutely irrelevant.

3. It is ok if your idea of helping illegal settlers is to let them exist in slums, in disease, let them eat and drink human waste, let them pollute the environment and the lagoon with toxic waste, but no human being should be allowed to live in such deplorable and abominable conditions poor or not.

So, you are wrong, that place is no place for your dog to live talk less you and your family.

It's really warped and thoughtless to suggest that the government should legalize their stay in that horrible mess and existence.

did you read d venezuela story @ all?

since the language in the analogy seems too difficult for your comprehension...let me break it down. Venezuela made what you call 'illegal' settlers legal due to their prolonged living at the site.

and whoever told you all of them live in shacks? and whoever also told you they are all 'illegal immigrants' as you call them. that is mischievous. you call them taht just to justify your position. and even if they come from other parts of the country....who the heck told you they dont have equal rights as you do? when did Nigerian laws start confering special priviledges according to state of origin. They are nigerian citizens! people like you started the Nigerian civil war..ethnic dogs!.

i chose to be this way with you cos your views are anti common sense and anti human. you do not deserve any humane answer.

To me i haven't been in Lagos to know the situation overthere. But, from the perception i can make a contribution toward this matter. Democracy is for all Nigerians, to leave in peace and harmony and to forget the old wounds from military regime. The constructions and innovation of roads should not be used to pose a treat on the life of people in a given state or locality. The government should take into the ill-money-head that, the same way they live, breath, eat, drink liquid, bath and habitat is the same way others do ie we are all living being on planet earth. we should use our good mine to remember that what goes around comes around.

Does anybody have image of how the place looks now after the demolishing of the squalor. There was a time he did the same thing to Oshodi(I read about it in this forum). Now people can say it's a right step taken to clear the hoodlums in that section of the city. There is lot that needs to be done to instil sanity into that city.

Fashola is on the right track!

The boot licking, syphophantic brains you have wouldnt allow you notice a progressive approach to a similar issue in a sensible society.

Am not surprised.

Although I would have expected the Lagos govt to employ more intelligent people for their PR efforts though.

Why would any reasonable person compare Venezuela, a country to Lagos, a state. The "kind" approach you want can only happen if the FG puts a hand in it. Why should I as a tax payer be funding housing for people from other states? Are they reciprocating this gesture, or is Lagos state just supposed to be a mugu.

Dis post also sounds dumb.

First, u need to go read ur Land Use Act. Power over lands in a state is vested in d Governore in trust of the people. So its a governor's responsibility.

And these people are also tax payers.

And pls stop dt st.upid and childish talk of the slum dwellers being from anoda state. Cos indigenes re also there.

And even if there are from other states, when did it become the role of the Lagos government to cater for only people indegenous to that state?

Pls let's open up our reasoning a lil bit. It won't hurt.

These are the same guys who keep whining that there is no law and order in the country. Yet when someone tries to impose some order and sanity, they whine even louder because it demands something from them.

Before you start insulting me, think so that you wont look stup1d afterwards. Paying tax does not entitle you to live on land you do not own for free. This concept seems to elude you, so let me break it down for you. Your taxes help the state government to run its affairs, as it cannot just print money out of thin air. It entitles you to services such as good roads, etc. It does not entitle you to settle on any land you deem fit.

Are there indigenes among those losing homes? Of course. But it doesnt change the facts. If everybody knows that there is one state that will resettle you for free, even though you didn't own the land you were squatting on, you would be a fool not to join the awoof. Lagos population would double in a a year, and you will be in the original situation. If you want some kind of charity or resettling program, it has to come out of the coffers of the FG and spread equally around all states so you dont have abnormal population migration.

See how dumb you look for bringing up the Land Use Act? It has nothing to do with executing law, order and sanity.

Bros...you dull o.

you mentioned that Venezuela is a country and lagos a state implying the inability of the lagos government tio legislate on land matters. instead of you to admit that i just educated you that the State govt has powers over land allocation, you are blabbing about money from the federal government. For wat purpose?

you said "Why should I as a tax payer be funding housing for people from other states?"

but i responded to that by saying, they are tax payers themselves so its not someone else usin his tax for another. or u are still sleeping aand fail to remember what u wrote in your earlier post?

Ode Mr Venezuela. You are asking the state to reward illegalities by handing over public lands to millions of illegal occupiers in all the slums and shanties public land in Lagos state.

Let me give you a better idea, after handing over public land to millions of illegal occupiers and law breakers, go to the border and start welcoming the thousands of every new potential illegal occupier entering Lagos state with nowhere to live and no kobo to there name a pull package of free taxpayer land and broadcast to the outside world that there is a place called Lagos state and they give away free land, all you have to do is take and occupy government land illegally, even the lagoon and the bridges are fair game because this is how they do it in Venezuela.

Dude, get your brains out of the gutter because you are still not making any sense.

Btw, what sensible and responsible government allows people to exist in unsafe and degraded environment where raw human waste/sewage floats directly into our lagoons and trash contaminates our underground water table?

Like I said, clueless and mentally incompetent people like you should never be allowed to lead anybody.

i knew you are not capable of research, so i gave you the link to just @ least read. If you read the solution in venezuela well, am sure you will realise what was done.

You just didnt bother reading did you? you just had to defend the government init? reading is too tasking for you ba?

I initially wanted to break the concept down for u sinceu seem really slow @ comprehending things but i realise its no point.

If you want to learn...read the resource i gave you.

Lagos state should not and can not afford to implement all the "socialist" thrash you are recommending. Infact it is the last state in Nigeria that will do that. Big important cities like, Lagos, Abuja, PH, Kano can not afford to be too slack chasing those textbook ideals, the moment you start compensating illegality, you have set a very wrong precedence that will boomerang. Don't refer to Venezuela any more, please, that is a communist country, for goodness sake.

Let me indulge you a little bit, Venezuela (oil rich nation) with a national budget in 2012 of Bs. 297.5 billion ($69 billion) and a population of 29.5 million.

Lagos state with a state budget in 2012 of N497 billion ( $3.1 billion) and a population of almost 20 million.

I used to argue like you some years back as passionately as you are doing, without understanding some specifics.
3.1 billion USD versus 69 billion USD. (Can they ever be mates)

One has a spending power almost 23 times more.

Emiye, i like ur intellectual analysis of issues albeit i do not agree.

the reason is this. lagos dont have to have the same kind of budget as Venezuala. you do not even need money to allocate a portion of lanf to people who have been living there for long.

Now let me tell u this...even Nigeria's LAND USE ACT at the time of promulgation confered ownership at of land to people who have been inhabiting a place for a long period.

lagos can adopt that more humane approach in this case.

thats my point.

thats my point.

What is the definition of Long period?

How do you determine the long period?

Lagos state is the most populated state in nigeria , and also the state with the smallest land mass.

How reasonable is it to then allocate such very scarce commodity (lands) to those individuals (some not even nigerians) who illegally settle on a land, and turn it to a place of filth, and slum.?

In the event of natural disasters, many of these people are so directly exposed to the risks involved, and will suffer the consequences, the makoko slum is a great eyesore and some other slums, and gradually Government must take step to reduce slums in Urban areas, The MDG goals , in particular goal 7 and target 7.10 looks at reducing urban population in slums.

The phrase "Go back to your village" might sound tribalistic or inhumane, but on a second thought, there is some sense in it. There are people who have no business staying in Lagos State, a cosmopolitan city. The same applies to Abuja and some other places.

Many of the slum dwellers also do not help themselves, slum is not where you live forever, you a see man in the slum breeding like pigs, no plan to get out of the slum, creating a vicious cycle of poverty, and an expanding slum.

All in all, I think Governance also requires that certain logical decisions are taken, devoid of emotions or sentiments.

If i come to stay illegally on your land with my wife and children, i am sure, one day you will give me an eviction notice.
