Their single gauge, antiquated (even for that period) rail line was a straight up north to south line which was meant for one thing alone: To evacuate your resources from the country. There were no rail lines that interconnected the cities and major centers to help boost trade within the country. This was why as soon as the colonialists left, the line became unviable. Foodstuffs and produce from the north was delivered across the country to feed people, as opposed to straight to southern ports for export while the masses starved.
