What a dumb idea. How can you scrap an independent industry you did not create? Is the Nollywood a government ministry that milks our govt resources without anything to offer? You can propose to scrap NFA, SSS, NP, NYSC,NDLEA because we support them with taxpayers money but NollyWood is a private thing and as long as they are not doing anything to incite anti govt sentiments, or jeorpadize the security in our nation and lives of it's citizens , what is your business with what they make?. Even the Nollywood movies are limited by the Nigerian govt through the censorship board to the stories they can publish. In America, they make top notch movies as well as real stupid ones, will you also propose to scrap Hollywood because of that?

How many times will i say this, IF YOU DON"T LIKE NOLLYWOOD MOVIES, STOP BUYING, WATCHING OR PATRONIZING IT.

This bad belle is getting out of hand.

Only the yoruba village movies interest me nowadays.
The rest are rubbishhhhhhhhhhhhhh

So all the yoruba movies are top notch and there are no stupid ones abi? I do not like science fiction movies and most action movies but i know lots of people that love them, does that mean it should be scrapped because i hate them?

Yoruba films are better than home videos to me ,the acting seems more real. I have seen home videos that you will see an actor supposedly an ibo man speaking with a yoruba accent.I dont agree they should be banned i think they should be screened thoroughly.
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by reindeer: 11:07pm On Sep 06, 2008
i guess the movie makers are just giving people what they demand i. e crap
this is not meant in a derogatory way but i think most who watch the movies arent very intelligient cos they'd have probs with most of movies if they are,the makers will have been forced to change if people boycotted the trash and stopped spending money one them, but see the average joe on the street wnats to watch idiotic comedy, watch fake action sequences, watch girls with hanging bellies called sexy,so the movies sell, but the quality remains low.

This is a dumb topic. Do you think when Hollywood started making movies, it was perfect? No, it wasn't, it took years for Hollywood to gain respect in the film making world. The Nigerian Movie making scene is young, and just starting out, do you think it should just be perfect out of nowhere?

I think people don't invest much on Nollywood movie production as they do in Hollywood movies to come up with a sound quality movie, So producers tend to use the little they have to make things out.

the annoying part is d deception! imagine i bought a certain home video that pararded some known nollywood actor only to wwatch d bloody movie and not find abt 2 of d advertised stars, i was sooooooo furious, i just cant remember d name of d home video, its not fair coz it amts to fraaud, anybody feeling me?
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by iukpe: 4:52pm On Sep 07, 2008
Mooretes,

I feel like you all the time I set my eyes on most of the Nollywood movies. I don't watch them because they are not "real". At my office canteen, for some reason its on the screen 50% of the time. The fact is 2 to 3 mins into any part of the movie they do something very annoying and i get my eyes off.
I wonder if they write and edit the scripts or the actors are just given a description of the scenario and they say what they want to say. I have seen old men acting primary or secondary school boys and same to the ladies. Its like a company and you act your part to get paid at the end of the month.Nolly wood movies should get real and ensure that stories make sense and have the suspense needed in  movies. The movies lack intelligence. Most times I wonder what the story is all about.
You have a story like "a guy got married to a girl, and she gave birth and wouldn't take care of the kid." that's all and the scenes keep circling around this.
Couple married without a kid and man's family want to bring him someone else. And that's it! no flavor, nothing else to the movie just this idea alone.
You find a young man with so much money but you cannot figure out what he does for a living in the movie, just his mansion and fleet of cars.
The producers feel that every scene should be full of arguments and quarrels to make it interesting, I wonder why that idea.
Facial expressions are fake and misplaced. And the actors are the same characters in different movies. same tone of voice, same looks, same behavior, same cloths and haircut, but they are expected to be different lives. They simply don't act characters in different movies but act parts.
The real problem is, what we refer to as Nigerian Movie industry is a hijack by individuals who have found them selves doing it and there is probably no competition. I think if they sit down, put all the money together and also think of how to beat piracy, they would do a great job in selling a good product. Other than releasing hundreds of movies just for making a living.
I hope Nigerian movies will make us all proud someday like our music is doing today.
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by mustafar1: 5:23pm On Sep 07, 2008
the first problem i have with the industry is the NAME! change that and everything else would fall in line. 3rd largest movie industry? shocked and what criteria was used to determine that. number of movies produced? number of actors recycled? number of copies sold? amount of money involved? quality of the movies? because honestly i want to know because i can't go out and shoot off at the mouth to my friends about it being the 3rd largest movie industry in the world without having facts to back up my claim. because with the kind of people i know, they are good at asking difficult jamb questions. heck, they still think i was a bad child growing up because i went to a boarding school for 6yrs.

when it comes to whether it should be scrapped, it depends. there have been a few movies that are awesome to watch. but for every awesome movie there are quite a lot of mushed ones. yes somene said not all hollywood movies are top notch, which i totally agree. but whats the percentage of movies that are not compared to those that are. mind u im not referring to their box office takings as a yardstick to determine what hot and whats not.

my sister that wants this thing scrapped, is it because of the silly mistakes that editing should have corrected that u want it scrapped or that u can see the camera mans shadow hanging out on the wall behind the actors and actresses. for me i really dont do movies, whether hollywood or otherwise. but the lil i watch, i can say hurts the eye most of the time, not because of the recycling of everything but for the errors that are made and left in. i dont care abot the titles, it could be kindergaten love for all i care but as someone said dont have the same hairdo thru a movie storyline that supposedly played out over a period of 10yrs.

yeah call it a mistake but its stuff like that which reduce the appeal of a movie.

These are one of the major problems with nigeria the little we try to do is not appreciated
@Poster if you/anyone don't like nollywood movies simply don't buy them and stop discouraging others Maybe because you are in Nigeria here in American the rate at which people from other countries eg Jamaicans appreciate and rush nollywood movies is alarming. Personally, I believe this movie industry is bringing back Nigeria past glory and is not doing any harm to the country

Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by Sisikill: 4:02am On Sep 08, 2008
But Sisikill, should people like Kelani be swept under the carpet as well
Doyin you are finding for my trouble oh!  angry

First Porn, now Kelani. . . pardon me, the god of moviemaking, the king of cinematography, the Ruler of directors, the lord of producers. . . . the man of unfathomable brilliance - Mr. Tunde Kelani in the same sentence as crappywood? Ay! I don't know what to say to you.

There are levels are there are levels and there are levels and then there is Tunde Kelani level. Yamayamawood is two levels below the last level of the levels before Tunde Kelani's level. If you are confused, don't worry because I am too. . . defining who Tunde Kelani is will do that to ya and that is why he should never be put in the same sentence and thought as nonsensewood!

Thank you!
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by Sisikill: 4:13am On Sep 08, 2008
The one that pains me is RMD with that his well rounded Ikebe
why should such a fine well spoken man have ikebe almost as big as mine ?
I hate the shots of him from the back.
His "madam" man hips are just too much for my liking

Lmao! It pains me too oh! Honestly you should have seen this man in his CHECKMATE days . . Ay! He was to DIE for and then one day, two years ago I sat down to watch my husband and what do I see? His Ikebe nicely package in Dungarees Jeans shorts with face cap acting like a 17yrs. First I threw up in my mouth, went to my room, tore down all the posters on my walls, blew out the candle lights in the mini-shrine I had and then threw myself out then window. . . unfortunately I had forgotten we lived in a bungalow, so I just got up, took out the VCD and shredded into pieces and that was the end of my love story with Mr. Ikebe Super.

@ krisbobo
That was a very well thought out analysis of Nollywood and how the movie watching audience should act . . . sadly, it seems we're been told to be enablers. They make crappy movies. . . there are no ifs ands or buts about it and until audiences start speaking up instead of ignoring it or keep saying "they are trying", they will continue to make crappy movies.

It's always nice to "meet" people who are into film making, I wish you the very best in your journey. smiley

goodness gracious me! I couldnt help but laff. Dunno what to even write to be very honest
but I'll be glad if I can get those siggies.

Then maybe we can start a new nollywood without RMD in dungarees acting like a 12yr old
or Omotola packing all her yansh into shapewears that we can see showing underneath the dress she's wearing
and trying to act like 'beyonce n rhianna' Good God! what were they thinking?

Hmmmm! u try to show urself as a patriot but I see you want to scrap NYSC, NDLEA and some other things, hmm!
well, we all have a right to our OPINIONS so either ways, thanks for making yours known.

@ Krisbobo

Hmmm! ok, if 10 out of 100 is what you call good, then cool. But thats rather too small I should say.
I never said anything about them Tunde Kelani and others u mentioned and that was probably because maybe they skipped my mind
but if I must say I recall mentioning some movies that are worth to be given credit as being who I am, I normally give credit to whom credit is due.

Truth is, if there are movie critiques in Nigeria, then maybe, just maybe they wouldnt produce loads of non quality movies in a short time.

I need to go to work now, but cheers for that

'So all the yoruba movies are top notch and there are no stupid ones abi? I do not like science fiction movies and most action movies but i know lots of people that love them, does that mean it should be scrapped because i hate them?'

Well, I dunno about that o! depends on what people think. The main idea was to scrap the whole industry and if we cant go that far, maybe they should listen to peoples view before they can release other movies, at least they should take cue from the others too

Even Bollywood doesnt release movies like that anymore
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by mooretes: 12:14pm On Sep 08, 2008
@ blackspade

Were u there when hollywood started?

Did u read the topic very well? I never compared Nollywood to Hollywood or Bollywood,  I only picked on nollywood because I think they need to find critics to make the industry progress and if you think its a rubbish topic, well, your opinion

at least it gives us views as to who and who we need to bring into the industry
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by mooretes: 12:21pm On Sep 08, 2008
@iukpe

Sorry guys just posting loads to your replies.

I'm really glad someone is in the same boat with me. You see, in most movies,
they keep going round and round in circles and the only scenes in most of these movies are
like 2 or worst 3.

The house of the main character
maybe they would show us like 'round about or somewhere when changing scenes'
then maybe another house

hmmmm! i wonder why this is,  I think they just need to invest more money into the industry, use it wisely and maybe see the progress of it
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by TPS360: 12:24pm On Sep 08, 2008
tHIS petition is a joke right?
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by mooretes: 2:36pm On Sep 08, 2008
O! was just thinking, I saw this movie recently and believe me
I didnt want to see it because it had just two people in it
'Modupe Temi' Said Balogun.

The director did a good job, Doris Simeon's husband I think he is Daniel A
well, the movie was so so funny especially when they were 'praying'

and it was promoting something that made real sense. And my goodness, I love those clothes they wore, very very nice
I want one

Meanwhile, I cant say that for his 'gbogbo ere' a 3 man cast movie
it was useless

we get all this rubbish in the industry really but all in all some are better than some

N no, dont go there, as Im not yoruba
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by krisbobo(m): 2:59pm On Sep 08, 2008
@Mooretes
Thanks Mooretes.
Now that we understand that scrapping isnt a great idea, may I humbly proper a really simple solution?
The next time you see a crappy movie, pls dont buy, dont rent, dont sit down with people to watch, in fact refuse to have it shown in your house!!
Not just that: look out for directors whose names are associated with crap and refuse to touch anything that bears their names with a 10-mile pole!!
Even with a gun to y head I will not watch MANY nollywood films, except when I need to write papers or use as example of what a film should not be, in any of the classes run at the centre where we hold trainings.

This is the easiest way to get them out and let better filmmakers thrive.
Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by iukpe: 4:13pm On Sep 08, 2008
BEWARE OF NIGERIAN MOVIES WHEN YOU SEE THE FOLLOWING SCENES,

BURIALS, WEDDINGS, ESPECIALLY TRADITIONALS, (I saw a movie once with a traditional wedding scene, Oliver de Coque was invited to play as musician. this scene lasted nearly 30mins or more.)
CHURCH SERVICE, OR DELIVERANCE PRAYERS, (You better kneel down before your screen and grab a bible else you will be idle).

The producers just seem to pitch a camera on a tripod and shoot this scenes all day long.

The biggest culprits in this mess are the 'igbowood' producers ,directors, actors and actresses. These producers & directors have no academic backing or certificate. They dont want to develop the industry, they just want to make money. Many of them start of selling auto spare parts, from then they start selling films and cds, suddenly he thinks he can produce and direct.

And d artistes are not making things better at all. They are so hungry and desperate they can in any kind of movie. Give an A-list act like olu jacobs a million naira and he'll feature in d poorest movie. They all want money.
The yoruba ones are not left out. Everyone of them is a producer,director0and actor all rolled one.
And pls enough of these silly movie titles from igbowood.

They should all learn from TK(tunde kelani).
