@all> The issue of the moment as regards generation of the tracking TPs and Symbol Rates were raised by me sometimes ago, particularly on C- band satellite signals receivable in Nigeria and NO SUBSTANTIAL responses were said. Then, I was asked to go to Lyngsat. Did I not know that functional TPs are existing there? Now,the issue has been raised again from another perspective. My believe is just that: Foresights may not be appreciated at the start but it will surely be celebrated later in life. Bicentenary Birthday of Charles Darwin was celebrated last week just because of his foresights while alive. Check: www.happybirthdaycharlesdarwin.com for more details. On a final note, any issue raised here must be treated to the later. My regards to all.

@Olofofo>> Thanks for your off-forum assistances. I think majority of G-groups members need it. You can post the required steps there. Secondly, the technician's number you posted is not working. I have tried it severally and MTN kept telling me that the number is not available on the MTN network. Please, re-confirm this. Thanks.

thanks George D for your advice, God knows my heart that i do appreciate his assistance alot, Iam more focused to learning a great deal from specialist like adewest, gangsta ,obnelly,baderu and your very self than overflog an issue, especially as i am preparing to help a friend install his own 1.8m
Pls sir is it possible to track sirus with 60cm dish as I,m afraid to temper with my w3a station because i used the deeper life signal to track it.
onca again thanks to the entire house crew for blessing us greatly ,we are learning alot .shalom

We knew $251.6m NigComSat-I could fail —Ex-Minister

A former Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Turner Isoun, told the House of Representatives on Monday that the Federal Government knew that the ill-fated Nigeria Communication Satellite, NigComSat-I, could fail when it asked the National Space Research and Development Agency to embark on the expensive project.

NigComSat-I, the first commercial satellite by an African country, was inaugurated into orbit on May 13, 2007 in the twilight of the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, costing the nation $251.6m.

The spacecraft, however, failed and was de-orbited barely 18 months later in November 2008.

Isoun testified in Abuja before the House Committee on Science and Technology headed by Mr. Abiodun Akinlade.

The committee is conducting an investigative hearing into the failed project.

China provided about $200m of the project cost via a loan agreement facilitated through the China-Exim Bank at an interest rate of three per cent per annum.

The Director-General of the Debt Management Office, Dr. Abraham Nwankwo, confirmed on Monday that $179.9m of the loan had been drawn down while the Federal Government had paid $9.9m in debt-serving as at December 2008.

The former minister argued that though the government then knew that space technology was a ”risky” venture all over the world, it still supported the take-off of NigComSat-I to help Nigeria to ”gain economic liberation.”

He insisted that Nigeria’s interest was ”adequately protected” when the government went into discussions on the development of the satellite with the China Great Wall Industry Corporation, the technical partners that built the spacecraft.

According to him, the government secured the commitment from China in form of the $200m loan and ensured that the firm would shoulder the insurance costs in the event of the project failing.

He said, “I believe that is why they have undertaken to build a replacement for NigComSat-I at no cost to Nigeria.

“People have asked the question that what business has a poor nation like Nigeria got to do with going into space.

“Well, the answer again, is that India, a poor nation, has also gone far in that direction; it is to guarantee economic liberation.”

The committee, however, said that there was no evidence that the Chinese firm had agreed to replace the crashed satellite as the former minister, the management of NASDRA and the management of Nigeria Communication Satellite Limited would want Nigerians to believe.

When the Chairman of the committee, Akinlade, asked the DG of NASDRA, Dr. Seidu Mohammed, whether he had seen a document proving that the Chinese firm would replace the satellite, he replied ”no.”

“There is no evidence before this committee to show that China has agreed to replace the satellite.

“We have been meeting with the Managing Director of NigComSat, he has not been able to produce any evidence on a very serious issue as this,” Akinlade stated.

But, the MD of NigComSat, Alhaji Ahmed Rufai, claimed in his submissions that a replacement agreement on the satellite existed, adding that President Umaru Yar’Adua was aware of it.

Rufai, who described the failure of the project as ”a blessing in disguise for Nigeria”, promised to forward a copy of the agreement to the committee.”

He told the lawmakers that Nigerian engineers trained in China would use the experience they acquired while working on NigComSat-I to perform better in future projects.

“The experience and the failure of the project will help us in our march for technology transfer and by the grace of God, we are coming out stronger,” he added.

Rufai disclosed that NigComSat generated only N19m from the bulk sale of transponders and another $426m before the satellite failed after spending less than two out of its 15-year projected life span.

The lawmakers cautioned against the move by NigComSat to build NigComSat-II at a time the circumstances surrounding the failure of its predecessor were still unclear.

@osef,
You can use 65cm to track sirius 4, no problem. Just use the RDV or equinoxe freq.

@Ecowas4all,

I get TVAFrica(98% quality), Viasat(72% quality) but despite series of tweaking my cnn,france 24etc are still down on nss7 c band.Any more suggestion?
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by pitodenz(m): 9:58am On Feb 17, 2009
George how does that sat align software works,i believe it has to do with a dvb card. Or is it something to store satellite freq? @ badaru and adewest i experiment nilesat using 1.8m ground mount eurostar dish with a digisat ku lnb but i was able to received only the first t.p 10758 and the signal quality is 50% maximum with the old strong and all other t.p refused to pop up though about 4 t.p's were trying to pop up. So do u guys think that 2.4m ll work well for us here?mostly now we re in rainy season or do i say we re always in rainy season here. Note that the lnb was cut immediately after the white plastic cover and the work was done in the afternoon and there was no rain then but very hot sun shine though i learnt that it rain heavly inside town when i went back. @ chuk101 where i did this work is not too far from owerri so take note when the nilesat masters speak.

the group is the sub-thread where we share files and other dagbolized information. to request membership, ensure you have a gmail account and then go to http://groups.google.com/group/nairaland-fta. it's as easy as ABC

@pito

try using a diiferent LNB like Fuji. the length of the digisat LNB might pose problem for your installation.

@Olofofo,
I hear you. But let's try to guard against those who just want to register to download stuff
and then they vamoose into thin air grin
Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by GeorgeD1(m): 11:42am On Feb 17, 2009
@Pitodenz,
The software allows you to carry out installation of any satellite as fast as the
speed of light wink And, yes you need a dvb card to do that if you want to physically connect
your pc to the dish.
However, it has other features which you don't need a card for. Like it enables you
update current transponder lists (frequencies) and if you put in your correct
latitude and longitude, it enables you align your dish using the sun's position as a guide.
For example, if you're in Port-harcourt and you want to track nilesat 101, just put in the
latitude and longitude of your location and it will tell you the exact time (hour, minute, second)
that the sun will be in the nilesat position. So, all you need to do is to wait for that exact time
on the particular day and point your dish to the sun and you will be on nilesat! grin Cool isn't it?
Well, I'd say it is very useful especially for those of us installing very large dishes.
No fumbling, no turning left or right. Just aim your dish to the sun and you're done-and you don't
need a PC card for this smiley smiley smiley
