"Sweetheart, wait up." Kim called from the door as she fastened the lock and ran towards Mark who was just backing the car out of the compound.
"Madam is going out?" The gateman asked.
"Yeah. Take care of the house." Kim replied without stopping.
Mark opened the passenger door for her and collected her bag to enable her enter the car.
"Thanks." She said.
Mark ignored her and slowly, he droved towards the estate gate.
"This neigbouhood is to quiet for my likening." Kim broke the silence that has takrn over the insides of the car. "I believe a club should be aroud the estate or even an eatery or whatever. It can't just be residential."
Mark hated being talked to while driving, because to him, driving is similar to walking on a dilapidated bridge. Especially on Nigerian roads where you must have seen a pothole hundred of yards away and must have concluded on how to avoid running into it.
"Even the occupants of each houses are not helping matters. I was suprised when you said you don't know your neighbour. Like you have never seen him or something. Everyone to his own, so bad."
"Oh God!" Mark muttered angrily as he blared the horn, even though the gates were wide open.
The journey continued in silence until Kim's phone rang.
"Hello Tony. Good morning." She answered and listened for the next few minutes, laughing more often and chipping in a couple of 'okays' and 'yes.'
"You called me yesterday?" Kim asked.
Mark could hear a distant yes from the other end.
"Around what time?" Kim asked. "Minutes before 8pm?"
Kim gave Mark a I-know-what-you-did look.
"The phone was with Mark then, so, I don't know what he did with it." She said and listen for a few seconds. "He is here too."
The conversation continued until it got to a point where Kim was laughing hysterically, as a result of what Tony was saying.
"Did you say A-a-ta?" She asked.
"Yes, Ata. That's pepper." Tony replied.
It was then it dawned of Mark that his wife was headed to the market days after she arrived Nigeria.
How she is going to cope is left to be seen.
When the laughter continued, Mark angrily switched on the radio and luckily, a yoruba language(which he and his wife couldn't speak nor understand) programme was being aired. He increased the volume and pretended as if it was a coincidence.
A tap from him wife made him reduce the volume, by now, Tina was done with the call.
"What was that about?" She asked.
"What?"
"You knew I was on phone and you switched on the radio." She replied.
"You knew I was here and you were discussing with another man as if I don't exist." Mark imagined himself saying.
"Are you jealous?" He knew the next question from Kim would look like this.
"Why should I be?" He knew he was going to deny it.
"Better don't be, because while you were seeing Tina, I didn't complain." Talk about vengeance, Kim could be brutal with it.
"Whatever." He knew she would win if the conversation was to go in that stead.
Even though he was jealous, he dare not say it out, afterall, he was guilty of giving attention to a woman apart from his wife.
"But there is nothing going between Tina and I." He thought.
"There might be nothing going between Kim and Tony too." A voice in his subconscious replied.
"So, here is a supermarket where you can get the basic things you need. The market women might not understand you and you don't understand their language." Mark said driving into a supermarket.
"I want the open market. I learnt they sell fresh foodstuffs." Kim replied.
"Who told you?" Mark asked.
"Tony."
Mark didn't know when he screamed. "Tony again? Will he run our home for us? Am sure your going to the market today was all his idea and advice."
Kim ignored him. "He said there is a market somewhere around. Let me call and ask him."
Mark hissed as he backed out of the supermarket.
"I know what to do." He muttered.
