Elchicolo: Barely 48 hours to the Saturday’s rescheduled presidential and National Assembly elections, bandits have sacked 10 communities, forcing over 2,000 residents to relocate from their ancestral homes in Batsari Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State.
The affected communities are Tudun Garin-Yara, Kwandatso, Garin Labo, Shigi, Sabon-Garin Dunburan, Garin Dodo, Inwala, Madattai, Sabon-Garin Shigi and Kasai.
Our correspondent who visited Batsari Modern Primary School where the victims, mostly women and children, were relocated, gathered that the crisis started last Sunday in Kasai community but later spread to other nine villages between Monday and Wednesday, rendering thousands of residents homeless.
The attack, which claimed seven lives, including an army captain, also led to the abduction of many women and children who were declared missing after the invasion.
One of the victims, Inatu Labo who could not control her tears while speaking to THISDAY at the camp, said: “We were asleep when the well-armed bandits numbering about hundreds attacked us. They killed some of our villagers and went away with our animals.”
Conducting THISDAY round the 12 classrooms occupied by the displaced persons, the Council Director of Education and Social Services, Kabir Abba Umar, said government had provided some palliatives in form of food items and sleeping materials to the displaced people.
“We have activated the temporary camps with profiling of the affected persons, and health personnel have been deployed to the camp. The local government has provided water tank, mats, blankets and buckets.
“As of yesterday, we registered more than 2,000 Internally Displayed Persons (IDPs) in this temporary camp and more are trooping in today. The displaced persons trek from their ancestral homes, which are about 10 to 15 kilometres away from Batsari.
“The local government area has also directed that provision of other requirements for camp operation should be giving to the displaced persons immediately”, he explained.

Politics › Re: APC Accuses Ortom Of Using Livestock Guard For Attacks In Benue by 22brains(m): 10:28am On Feb 22, 2019 |
naijapikin04: https://nextedition.com.ng/2019/02/22/apc-accuses-ortom-using-livestock-guard-attacks-benue/
The All Progressive Congress, APC, in Benue state has accused the state government of sponsoring attacks in some part of the state using the Livestock Guard.
But the PDP has said the APC was making the accusation out of fear of failing the forthcoming elections
The APC House of Representatives Candidate for Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency, Mr Conrad Terhide Utaan made the allegation on Thursday while briefing newsmen in reaction to the attacks in the community of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
He said he had called the press to draw attention to a very dangerous trend emerging in the state where, according to him, Gov. Samuel Ortom’s ineptitude to deliver on good governance, had made him desperate for survival.
He said that Gov Ortom had, recently, abandoned every single responsibility of governance and had gone into politics, making inflammatory statements that were inimical to the development of the state.
Utaan said rumours about Fulani herdsmen being attacked on the fringes of the Benue boundaries were deliberate provocations as the issues in the state were not necessarily between Fulani herdsmen and the farmers.
He noted that the Benue people have lived peacefully with Fulani before now acknowledging that the competition for arable land for farming and land for grazing had thrown up a lot of challenges between the two.
“As it is now, the Benue government has decided to turn this into a political tool to seek re-election. I have it on good authority that in the last few weeks, state sponsored armed militia are being instigated to hit at cattle settlements in circumstances that can be best described as cattle rustling to the extent that it can create violence and anarchy as we prepare for this 2019 elections.
“The intention, we are sure is that the governor wants people to believe that Benue is still under threat of Fulani occupation.”
He noted that since the start of Operation Whirl Stroke in Benue, the crisis in the state had abated except some deliberate provocation by some armed militia in the guise of livestock guards.
He recalled that at INEC meeting to discuss voting points for IDPs in the state, it was agreed that all IDPs should return back to their homes for voting but “this did not go down well with the governor since he preferred elsewhere.”
“There was also an attempt for some people to vote at Torkula axis to allow for rigging of the election. Guma LGA chairman, Anthony Shawon suggested that Uvir ward should vote in Gbajimba but stakeholders opted for Iye. After losing the arrangement, the PDP deliberately decided to create anarchy in that area,” he said.
Utaan insisted that the APC in the state is convinced that those who carried out the attack on Iye, early hours of Thursday, were members of Livestock guards sponsored by the governor.
“It was a state sponsored violence on the people and not perpetrated by Fulani. We therefore urge the Federal Government to urgently disband and disarm the livestock or else, elections in Benue will be compromised.”
He further alleged that Gov. Ortom and PDP planned to cause violence in many areas of the state especially where they felt they do not have a grip saying adequate security should be provided in Benue for a violence free election.
Responding to allegations that he was sponsoring militia to kill his people, Gov. Samuel Ortom stated that the APC was heaping baseless accusations on him out of fear of defeat at the forthcoming polls.
Ortom who responded through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase said “the APC is clearly in a panic mood regarding the realities that is staring them in the face.
He said such statements were not befitting of a politician seeking to represent a people most of whom have lost their lives to herdsmen attacks and that Mr. Utaan lacked the justification to accuse the governor whose administration has signed the open grazing law to protect people of the state.
He said Mr. Utaan’s attack on governor Ortom was also to please the federal government to play down his purported investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC.
Mr. Terver Akase was of the opinion that if anyone was to be accused of herdsmen killings, it should be the APC that has failed woefully to protect the people of Benue against herders attacks and not the governor.
He also stated that if anyone was to be blamed for the attacks on Benue people, it would be the APC and their leader in the state, Senator George Akume.
The governor described Mr. Utaan’s comments as unpatriotic, insensitive and capable of disrupting the general elections.
On the call to disband the livestock guards, Mr. Akase, said the federal government did not have the right to dismantle the state livestock guards which was legitimately constituted, saying those calling for the proscription know nothing about the law and separation of powers.
He therefore called on security agencies to provide everyone in the state with adequate security now, during and after the elections. when an old man sits on the ground, children will pur sand on his head. Buhari APC are insane, confused and filled with illitracy. |

Politics › Re: Kajuru Killings: Police Disown Casualty Figures Announced By El-rufai by 22brains(m): 9:31pm On Feb 21, 2019 |
KikBuhari2Daura: The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdurrahman, has disowned both figures announced by Governor Nasir El-Rufai as casualties in Gidan Maro an Iri axis of Kajuru Local Government of Kaduna State.
Mr Abdurrahman said the police are still investigating and won’t quote or confirm any figure until their probe is concluded.
At first announcement on February 15, Mr El-Rufai said 66 people were killed by “criminal elements” in various dispersed hamlets in Kajuru Local Government. The army also confirmed the 66 deaths.
In another announcement after an extensive meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and service chiefs on February 19, the governor said the death toll had risen to 130.
Mr El-Rufai’s first and second claims were followed by criticisms by some people who raised doubts about the figures.
One of such criticisms came from the senator representing the district. “What I found out about the killing is that it happened between Sunday and Monday. The figures for the death are within the range of 10 to 15. The state government exaggerated the figures and also timed the announcement of it in view of the fact that that place is remote and beyond the reach of many journalists,” Shehu Sani said.
PREMIUM TIMES journalist visited the scene of the killings on Wednesday and on Thursday sought clarifications from the commissioner.
Mr Abdurrahman neither confirmed nor denied the governor’s figures but said the police had no hand in arriving at them.
“Right now, if the governor tells you even 200, he is just quoting figures. It may be more than that or less than that. For example, the areas you have visited where we were told that 36 bodies were buried, It was not under the purview of the security at the beginning of the investigation until when the Fulani victims themselves came out crying after we have secured all the places with our military counterpart. They now approach the military that come and escort us to come and bury our relations. That was when it was uncovered.”
The police chief said his men were still investigating the issue and would not identify with any figure until this is concluded.
“As I told the governor himself, I said figures in a crisis of this magnitude should be left until all investigations have been finished. All those areas we are getting information are covered. You cannot come up with a figure. You will come and say a figure and later you have to come and say it again. And this is what is happening As far as police is concerned we are investigating and investigation is still at embryonic stage. By the time we reach all areas…as I’m talking to you now, my men are still in the bush, plus SEMA and other CSOs.
“That’s why professionally, we don’t come out with figures until when we are sure and concluded our investigation. So, you see that there is no reason to say this one said this figure or that one said this figure,” he said.
Mr Abdurrahman said the troubled communities are now in a post-crisis period warning that ‘nobody should stampede investigation.’
