The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of military escorts for retired army generals and others during the elections.

The Army Chief also said that there will be no military escorts for politicians even as the army has been mandated to ensure that there is restriction of movement.

In his statement, he ordered the military commanders to ensure that anyone caught in doing anything inimical during the elections should be dealt with decisively.

COAS orders is not unconnected with the outcome of the meeting held with President Muhammadu Buhari and other security chiefs on Tuesday.

The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mr Omololu Bishi, has said the command has arrested two suspects, Tersoo Joseph, aka Adikpo, and Demenenge Iorwa, for allegedly raping a married woman and robbing her.

Bishi said, “On February 9, 2019, around 6pm, some armed robbers operating on a motorcycle behind the Bem Hotels, Ankpa Quarters, Makurdi, abducted a woman and took her to the Quararafa Quarters, Wadata, where they raped and robbed her of a phone and N2,000.

“During investigation, Tersoo Joseph, aka Adikpo, and Demenenge Iorwa, of Logo 1, Makurd, were arrested in connection with the case. The suspects have confessed to the crime.”

The CP said the command had also arrested Justice Agada, 25; Emmanuel Patrick, 21; Emmanuel Atoju, 19; and Stanley Ugochukwu, 20, of different addresses, for involvement in cultism and armed robbery.

He explained that the suspects were arrested by policemen on patrol at their hideout along the Onitsha Street, Wurukum.

He added that policemen recovered two locally-fabricated pistols, two live cartridges, one knife and seven wraps of leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa from the suspects.

Bishi stated that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects belonged to various cult groups and were responsible for robbing members of the public of their money, phones, handbags and other valuables.

He also said one David Nule of the Buruku Local Government Area was intercepted and arrested by policemen with an English-made double-barrelled gun concealed in a haversack, adding that the suspect was apprehended for armed robbery and illegal possession of firearm.

Acording to the CP, the command also arrested Johnson Ekoja, Emmanuel Ogiri and Anthony Ojela in connection with a robbery incident at No. 24 Jokpama Street, Otukpo, on February 18, 2019, adding that the suspects robbed their victim of N275,000 and a Samsung phone.

He added that the suspects were arrested with two locally-made pistols, one cartridge, live ammunition, knife and two phones.

A bricklayer identified as ThankGod Emmanuel, of Sauka-Kahuta area of Minna, Niger State, has been arrested for allegedly killing his co-worker over N47,000.

The suspect, who was apprehended by a team of policemen attached to Tundun Wada Division, was said to have killed Tita Komla, of the same address, with digger.

It was learnt that Komla’s brother, Tete Joe, of Katampe, Abuja, had earlier reported that his brother was working with the suspect in his construction company at Sauka-kahuta.

He claimed that the suspect had called him on the phone to notify him that Komla had been killed by unknown persons.

It was also learnt that the suspect engaged his victim in a physical combat, killed him with a digger, robbed him of his N47,000 and dumped his body inside the gutter.

Emmanuel said that he killed Komla with a digger in order to take his money.

He said: “Komla did not know I wanted to rob him of his money. I killed him so that nobody will know that I stole his N47,000. I used digger to inflict injuries on his head and he died instantly.

“I least suspected that police will identify me as the one who killed him. Well, it’s really unfortunate.”

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muhammad Abubakar, said the suspect confessed to have committed the crime.
Abubakar also said that the suspect inflicted injuries on the head of his victim and made away with his money. The PPRO added that the suspect would be arraigned soon.

The other day some hausa guys came to dig a well in my compound and we got talking. These guys were from Adamawa. They were so disgusted with the man that they didn't even want to hear the name buhari yet buharists here would make you feel buhari is an untouchable god in the north. Though the election may have been rescheduled due to some logistics reasons being cited by the INEC Chair, we seem to be getting some heartbreaking news on the hour. According to reports, it was reported that two buses carrying sensitive materials to Obot Akara local government in Akwa Ibom state got burnt and two persons were reportedly died.

Two persons have been killed in Akwa Ibom state after an attack on buses carrying sensitive materials to Obot Akara local government area, the buses were accompanied by NYSC corp members who will serve as polling officers in their various locations.

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has asked Nigerians to remain peaceful in the face of provocation.

Atiku said this in a statement he personally signed in the early hours of Saturday while reacting to the shift in the dates for the conduct of the general elections as announced by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

Atiku signed the statement which he addressed to Nigerians from Yola, Adamawa State where he had gone to cast his vote.

The former vice-president said that it was unfortunate that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari failed to utilise the time it had to organise the elections.

He likened the actions of the commission to the Biblical hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob.

He said, “As you know, the Independent National Electoral Commission has announced a postponement of the elections until 23 February and 9 March respectively.

“The Buhari administration has had more than enough time and money to prepare for these elections and the Nigerian people were poised and ready to perform their civic responsibility by voting in the elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, 16 February, 2019.

“This postponement is obviously a case of the hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob. By instigating this postponement, the Buhari administration hopes to disenfranchise the Nigerian electorate in order to ensure that turn out is low on the rescheduled date. Nigerians must frustrate their plans by coming out in even greater numbers on Saturday, 23 February and Saturday, 9 March respectively.

“Knowing that the Nigerian people are determined to reject them, they are desperate and will do anything in their power to avoid their rejection by the Nigerian people.

“Their plan is to provoke the public, hoping for a negative reaction, and then use that as an excuse for further anti-democratic acts.

As such, I call on all Nigerians to be patient. We have tolerated the maladministration of this government for four years. We can extend our tolerance a few more days and give them our verdict via our votes.”

Atiku asked Nigerians to maintain the peace and still endure to come out to vote on the new dates.

He said, “Maintain the peace and be law abiding. Do not react to this provocation with anger, violence or any action that might be exploited by those who do not want this election to hold. Remain calm. We will overcome this. You can postpone an election, but you cannot postpone destiny.

“Please come out to vote on Saturday, 23 February and Saturday, 9 March respectively. Frustrate those who do not want this election to hold by coming out in very large numbers. That is the best antidote to their plans.

“May God bless you and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
