Gurgle: Lol. The bible is anti feminist. So is the quran. The bible, especially the old testament, was more of culture than actual religion. Things have changed and times have changed. That's why a man barbing his hair is not more considered a sin. (check leviticus) |

Swizdoe: That is not feminism. I carry a bible and start preaching, does that make me a priest? |

Freemanan: Legalisation of gay marriage means that gay marriages are valid in the eyes of the law. It means that the laws of heterosexual marriage such as divorce, prenuptial agreements etc now apply to same sex marriage. Gay ppl have been getting married for centuries but it wasn't a valid union in the eyes of the law. Your parents not being happy about your choice of life partner has nothing to do with justice and equity. Justice and equity brings happiness.. The gays are happy, the heterosexuals are happy The men are happy, the women are happy |

gj22: The Old Testament is Jewish law and custom that needs to be studied for years before anybody can truly understand what it means. The New Testament is more where this discussion lies. The OT is necessary to show that human beings are unable to keep laws without reverting back to sin and that keeping the laws without grace, love and Christ's sacrifice is ultimately redundant. The laws you mentioned like barbing hair, not eating pork and not wearing mixed cloth are symbolic and ceremonial laws that have their own meaning and usefulness in their historical context. Things like that are present in every religion and culture, including native religions in Africa. Jesus made examples of them in the OT when the Pharisees and other religious teachers failed to see how useless it is to keep laws without love. What's the point of keeping your hair unbarbed but refusing to give to the poor? There is no point in that at all The Bible has to have some culture in it since it happened in a human society- no society is devoid of culture even though we all have cultural parallels. In those days, in the Jewish society it was necessary for a woman to cover her head because the only women who didn't cover their hair were prostitutes. But that no longer applies these days, so the covering rule no longer applies. Some Christian communities still practice head coverings because it is part of their culture, whilst some choose not to. Culture and spirituality are intrinsically linked, because different groups of people will always leave their own mark on neutral topics. We have to use our discretion. Just because the Bible was written at a time when women had almost no rights it doesn't mean we cant derive meanings from the teachings that support those rights nowadays. |

Gurgle:Sorry to intrude. This argument cannot hold. If the Bible is a guide for Feminism and the Bible itself has no tenet of this ideology, what discretion are WE to use in applying it to the said movement? |

passey: Feminism doesn't say men and women are equal. It says give them equal opportunities and chances. |

Freemanan: Who is the society? Is it not the men and the women? The gays and the heterosexuals? Or is society a person? |

Re: Is Feminism Truly A Waste Of Time? by Gurgle(f): 10:59am On Jul 29, 2015 |
Freemanan: Where is says there is no slave or free, Jew or gentile, man or woman as long as we are all in Christ. Husbands, love your wives as yourself. (and wives submit to your husbands) If a man were really to love a woman that much, would he want to stop her from achieving her full potential in this world? We can extrapolate all the info we need. That's why Scripture is always timeless |

Freemanan: I have no idea what the guy is talking about. The old testament was anti feminist, the new testament was mildly anti feminist. Yet he thinks the bible should be the moral ground for feminism |
Re: Is Feminism Truly A Waste Of Time? by Nobody: 11:03am On Jul 29, 2015 |
Gurgle:You are getting it wrong love. Most cases of gender discrimination don't happen between spouses... The society is the starting point and no society today is built on the tenets of Christianity. So it is the society that sidelines women. The discrimination that takes place in the house can be fixed... But the major challenge Feminism is facing is posed by the society, it's culture, beliefs, GOVERNMENT and laws. 1 Like |

Re: Is Feminism Truly A Waste Of Time? by gj22(m): 11:09am On Jul 29, 2015 |
Gurgle: 1. Has nothing to do with feminism 2. Will you tell a man to be submissive to his wife too? Don't you know what it means to submit to someone? 3. Yeah, what about a woman that is not his wife? Does feminism apply to your wife alone? And please don't quote "love your neighbours as yourself" 4. The new testament doesn't address the issue head-on. Don't try to bend words to suit your argument. |

Freemanan: Maybe being a realist isn't such a good thing. Accepting every situation you find yourself in is not a good idea to survive in this world. |

Re: Is Feminism Truly A Waste Of Time? by Gurgle(f): 11:17am On Jul 29, 2015 |
gj22: Feminism endorses equality between men and women. I would say it does have a lot to do with feminism, essentially I wouldn't tell a man to be submissive to his wife. Did I say I would? From your tone it doesn't seem like youre open to this debate so lets just agree to disagree |
Re: Is Feminism Truly A Waste Of Time? by Gurgle(f): 11:23am On Jul 29, 2015 |
Freemanan: Of course it is more than just husband and wife, I just used that as an example I agree that its a societal issue that will take a long time to change. Im just saying that I don't think religion and feminism are mutually exclusive |

Re: Is Feminism Truly A Waste Of Time? by gj22(m): 11:24am On Jul 29, 2015 |
Gurgle: You Provided it as a point to prove the bible was feminist and I am saying that if you can't say the same to a man, then it isn't a feminist point. That aside, all your points were for man and wife relationship. They weren't points of feminism. |
Re: Is Feminism Truly A Waste Of Time? by Gurgle(f): 11:27am On Jul 29, 2015 |
gj22: I used the man and wife point as an example. Anywhere where a man and woman are concerned, the same issue will arise I don't see how its not a feminist point. I didn't say men and women need to do exactly the same thing for each other, just that they are equal. Submission to a man doesn't mean that a woman is not equal to him. And not submitting to a woman doesn't mean the man is better than she is |

Re: Is Feminism Truly A Waste Of Time? by Nobody: 11:38am On Jul 29, 2015 |
Gurgle:Islamic feminism advocate women's rights , gender equality, and social justice grounded in an Islamic framework. I can provide you with sufficient materials in this area. Part of my Masters' thesis is on it. |
