PoliticsPHOTOS: Troops Clear Boko Haram Terrorists In Ngoshe And Gava by 247frolic(op): 9:56am On Jun 29, 2016
Yesterday, Tuesday 28th June 2016, troops of 121 Task Force Battalion, 26 Task Force Brigade, accompanied by a large number of Civilian JTF from Gwoza, embarked on a very aggressive patrol that dislodged remnants Boko Haram terrorists hibernating at Ngoshe and Gava villages, located close to Gwoza on the mountainous terrain.

The essence of the robust patrol which was supported by the Nigeria Air Force and Cameroonian Defence Forces who provided air cover and real time Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, was to clear the remnants of the terrorists hiding in the mountainous area and rescue all persons held hostages by the Boko Haram terrorists.

While advancing towards their objective in Ngoshe, the patrol team encountered Boko Haram terrorists. They have to clear the delay positions staged by the terrorists through the support of the Nigeria Air Force fighter jets.

Although the number of terrorists killed could not be ascertained, quite a number of them where seen falling over the mountains when engaged. It is equally believed several others escaped with gun shot wounds.

The troops were however able to recover quite a number of arms and ammunitions. These include; 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) tube, 4 RPG Bombs, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1 Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle and 3 AK-47 rifles.

Other items recovered include 1 Sub-Machine Gun(SMG), 1 Locally made Pistol, a locally made Double-Barrel gun, 1 Smoke Grenade, 243 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 1 round of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.

They also recovered 18 rounds of MI16 rifle, 3 G3 Rifle magazines, 2 AK-47 magazines, 1 mobile telephone handset and a SIM card, as well as a pair of military desert camouflage uniform.

CrimeMan Abandons Son For Bag Of Rice In Kano by 247frolic(op): 4:44am On Jun 27, 2016
A middle-aged man, identified as Mallam Yusuf Bala, on Sunday at Singer Market, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State forfeited his five-year-old son for a bag of rice.

According to an eyewitness account, Bala approached the rice dealer, Alhaji Suleiman Bagudu, to buy a bag of rice, which he carried home but left his son, with a promise to rush home to bring the money for the foodstuff.

This, he said, was because the money on him was not enough to pay for the bag of rice, selling for N14,000 per 50kg bag.

However, six hours after, the said man failed to show up as promised to settle the rice dealer and collect his son.

According to the source, the rice dealer became suspicious, following the Bala’s prolonged absence, a situation that prompted the trader to interrogate the toddler he left behind.

On interrogation, the five-year-old boy innocently led the rice dealer to their home, located at the abattoir area of Koki in Dala Local Government Area of the state.

Despite expressing embarrassment when the rice dealer arrived his home, alongside his child, Bala openly confessed that he was financially handicapped, hence his unbecoming conduct by abandoning his son as a last resort.

Shortly after listening to Bala’s explanation, the rice dealer donated the bag of rice to him and handed over the boy to his father.

When contacted by our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kano State Police Command, DSP Musa Magaji Majia, said the incident had not been reported to him, promising to brief the press as soon as the aggrieved party reported the incident. But as of the time of filing this report, Majia had not called our correspondent.

PoliticsBenue Civil Servants Don’t Do Anything At Work – Governor Ortom by 247frolic(op): 5:20pm On Jun 18, 2016
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has said the civil servants in the state are idle at work.

He made this remark while justifying his declaration of Fridays as work free in the state to enable civil servants work on their farms.

The Governor who was speaking to journalists in Abuja, Wednesday, said even if he didn’t declare Fridays as public holidays, the workers go to work and do nothing.

“They are ignorant people. The programme is well received. Benue State has comparative advantage in agriculture.

“Even when I did not declare Friday, it is as good as they go there and still do nothing,” he said.

Science/TechnologyOgun River In Kara Turns To Dry Land Along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway by 247frolic(op): 3:18pm On Jun 18, 2016
Gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as plants overrun Ogun River

Residents, workers and passers-by on Saturday besieged Kara along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to view the sudden appearance of plants which grew on a section of the Ogun River.

A large number of people stormed the area with their phones and recording devices, while some went as far as walking over the water plants and praying.

Though several eyewitnesses described the occurrence as “strange and mysterious,” geological experts told SUNDAY PUNCH that the plants were simply rapidly growing seaweed and that the incident was not extraordinary.

Our correspondent, who visited the site on Saturday, observed that a significant expanse of the river had been carpeted by a massive layer of the vegetation.

Scores of residents, including children, were walking, playing and praying atop the plant-covered river.

Michael Fagbenro, a panel beater with a workshop located at the Kara riverbank, said those in the area began to notice the plants surface at about 8am on Friday.

He said, “It started gradually; the plants were flowing with the river. But by 12pm, the water began to flow forcefully and brought a lot more plants. It accumulated at a very rapid rate.

“By Friday afternoon, it had completely covered the river. I have been here for over five years and this has never happened. It is obviously not normal. This is unbelievable. When I saw it, I was afraid because it is so strange.”

Asked if he had attempted taking a walk on the seaweed, Fagbenro exclaimed frighteningly, “Who, me? I don’t have the courage to walk over it! I am not one of those born here and I cannot swim. I am even sure that when the plants leave, they will take someone with them.”

Mrs. Christiana Monday-Egbu, a local trader, similarly said she and other workers at the site were fearful at the occurrence on Friday.

The cassava processing business owner, who set up shop by the river over a year ago, said, “It was around 10am when the water started gushing, carrying the plants with the waves. It wasn’t even raining when it started.

“People were startled when it started. It all happened so fast. I have never witnessed such a strange occurrence in my life. Everyone rushed out to watch with surprise.”

Another Kara-based trader of over three years, Mrs. Love Itoro, said prior to the strange development, canoes plied the river, conveying passengers, mostly traders, from one side to the other.

The food vendor explained that at the climax of the incident, a canoe was caught in the middle of the river with five passengers who were meat sellers.

“When the plants started coming in large amounts, it blocked the boat and almost made it sink. The driver quickly came down onto the plants to help the passengers carry their meat. People from the other side then threw a rope and pulled the boat back to safety,” Itoro said.

Mrs. Ability Udoh, a trader at Kara for five years, said the occurrence was not entirely strange. According to her, occasionally, the river would bring sea-based plants.

Udoh, however, admitted that she had never witnessed it in such magnitude.

“We are happy that nobody died,” she said.

Two other traders, Mercy and Blessing of Calabar extraction, said they were shocked and afraid when the incident occurred.

Mercy said, “I too was so scared because I have never seen something like this.”

Blessing added, “I saw someone lying down on the plants on Friday; I was so scared. I cannot believe how daring some people are.”

In an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday, Dr. Folorunsho Adetayo of the Department of Geosciences, University of Lagos, identified the plants as seaweed.

According to the environmental geoscientist, seaweed is a regenerative product of algae.

Adetayo said, “The plants are not harmful. People can come in contact with them without being harmed. The rainy season definitely contributes to it. I cannot say that it is the first time this is happening.

“It could have happened in the past. During certain periods of time, the algae proliferate and are formed around the river course.”

He also dismissed claims that the river had dried up, noting that the algae had the ability to reproduce and regenerate itself at a rapid rate within hours.

He said, “No, the river cannot just dry up in the rainy season for that matter. It is an experience that is not restricted to Nigeria. At least, personally, I have witnessed it in Qingdao, China, two years ago.”

Adetayo however warned, “The government, however, needs to remove the plants because if allowed to stay long, it can become toxic to plants and animals, including human beings.”

A Professor of Applied Geophysics, Department of Geosciences, UNILAG, Elijah Ayolabi, in an electronic mail, also explained that the occurrence was not strange.

He said, “To the ordinary man, this may be strange, but to those of us who have conducted geophysical investigations and geological mapping around that area, it is not strange. However, I will like to see it myself and provide scientific deductions of the occurrence.”

PoliticsMusiliu Obanikoro Reacts To EFCC Raiding His Lagos Home by 247frolic(op): 10:20am On Jun 15, 2016
Musiliu Obanikoro

Good morning friends and Good morning to all Nigerians. The following tweets are my reaction to recent developments.

The Invasion and Raid of my Residence yesterday by Agents of the State is a sad throwback to a Tyrannical Past that is Better Forgotten. In 16 years of Democracy, we thought we had conquered despotism for good in Nigeria but in one year, this Government has brought it back.

Let me reiterate clearly: I have never received any invitation from EFCC over any issue up till date. This invasion therefore is premature.

Furthermore, no Court ordered a Raid on my house or Seizure of my belongings. Any such move is Illegal and will be fought against Legally. Such Invasion and Raid of my house without prior Invitation from EFCC to me or any Court Order towards this Signals a Return to Despotism. The Illegal Invasion and Raid is a Mockery of Justice, an Expression of Disdain towards the Judicial System and a terribly Bad Precedent.

The Illegal Invasion without EFCC invitation, Notice of Investigation or a Court Order is also a Mockery of the Intelligence of Nigerians.

If the harassment of PDP members will help Government to Deliver Good Governance, many of us would Submit ourselves willingly to Martyrdom. If hounding PDP members will solve Nigeria's Economic Woes then we Welcome it. This Rather is a Woeful Attempt to Distract from those Woes.

But Unfortunately, harassing PDP leaders is not in any way Equal to the Delivery of Good Governance, No Matter who Applauds such Illegality. The aim of Govt is to distract the People from their Woes. Such tactics have been tried before, in Nigeria and elsewhere, and they failed.

I put close to Two Decades into Public Service, in Opposition and in Government, all with an Unblemished Record and a Clear Conscience.

To put one's family and dependents through such trauma of illegal invasion, in this holy month of Ramadan is an unfair reward for service.

The Illegal Invasion of my house, FFK and several others in Detention: give me NO CONFIDENCE in Government's willingness to do Justice. EFCC has never OFFICIALLY made public ANY investigation of my record in Government at ANY TIME before this Illegal Invasion of my house.

Suggestions of an EFCC investigation have dwelt Solely in the Realm of Rumours, over which I have sued Several Media Organisations to Court.

The Rumour before was that of a $2.7billion arms issue, now they say it is NSA imprest account - let them make the Documents Public.

EducationPost-utme Examination Is Illegal – JAMB Registrar by 247frolic(op): 1:43pm On Jun 14, 2016
Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Dibu Ojerinde has declared as ‘unconstitutional’ and ‘illegal’ the Post-UTME examination conducted by tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The JAMB boss added that the examination body was not responsible for scrapping the exercise adding that it was cancelled by the Minister of Education after due consultation.

He said these while featuring on Sunrise Daily, an early morning programme on Channels TV.

Noting that there is a difference between screening and test, he said that the initial agreement with institutions was to conduct screening exercise to determine their eligibility.

His words: “Nobody say you should not screen candidates. The screening involves checking of their certificates, subject combination, Jamb scores and other prerequisites to ensure that they meet up with the requirement. It is screening, not test.

“What government asked them to do right from the beginning is screening and not test. Former President Obasanjo said this when he was in power; ‘I did not ask you to conduct another exam, all I say is screen the candidates before they come in’ and that exactly is what the minister is talking about.”

Quoting some sections of the constitution, Ojerinde stressed further that the exercise is unconstitutional and has no legal basis.

“According to section 5, sub-section 1A of the constitution, the general control for the conduct of matriculation examination for admission into all the universities, polytechnics and Colleges of Education or whatever name called is vested in JAMB.

“Section 5, sub-section 2 also states; the board shall be responsible for determining matriculation requirements and conducting examination leading to undergraduate admission and also for admission into National Dipoma and National Certificate in Education, NCE.”

Ojerinde said that a uniform screening process will soon be developed.
