Giwa FC of Jos goalkeeper, Timothy Chichi Okere dies after long battle with spinal cord injury


The goalkeeper of Giwa FC Timothy Chichi Okere has died after a prolonged battle with a spinal cord injury. He died yesterday May 4th in Jos, and it's sad times for the football club and the League Management company as Timothy has been an important member of the squad and played a major role towards helping the team to gain promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League three years ago before losing his spot to Flying Eagles goaltender Ojo Olorunleke at the commencement of the team’ s season in the NPFL.



He sustained the spinal cord injury two years ago and was admitted into Bida hospital. He was later discharged but later admitted after he relapsed.



The Media Officer of the team, David King, has confirmed the unfortunate incident this morning and said the club was awaiting communication from the player’s family on the burial arrangements.

May his Soul Rest in Peace, Amen!!

I was surprised to find on the social media this morning that Senator Peter Nwaoboshi Initiated Into A Cult In Hishome town with pictures showing something of a ritual proceeding... Sahara Reporters promptly took it that it was a initiation ceremony and it has been flying around.


I was at the burial ceremony, and The Senator was only carrying out the rite which is part of the customs and tradition of our people at Ibusa...

No initiation would have been done in the open with alot of dignatries such as the senate president, Dino Malaye, Akpabio etc in attendance...

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Thursday in Abuja that time has come for Nigerians to transform brilliant ideas into reality in order to achieve the desired objectives.

Osinbajo spoke when he received a delegation of Nigerian Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) who attended the Indian Manufacturing Conclave – an industrial conference – last month in New Delhi, India. He said that Nigerians have never lacked ideas.

“Almost all of us are certain about what the country needs to do, but the critical problem is the capacity to get things done. What is important is what we do with all the ideas,” the vice president said.

Osinbajo was briefed on the conference’s experiences from the trip shared by members of the delegation on different sectors of the economy, such as power and energy, ICT, maritime, financing, SMEs. The vice president commended the business leaders for their efforts at the event and the visit to his office.

“Nigerians know what to do, but the time has come to really work on getting things done. The problem has been on how to really get things done,” he told the delegation.

He also called on Nigerians in their different callings and endeavours to work together for the advancement of the country. The vice president also restated government’s determination to encourage ‘Made in Nigeria’ products including electric meters needed for billing.

He also encouraged linkages between federal research agencies and industry in order to develop local technological innovations. The leader of the delegation, Osaro Eghabamen, had commended the government for facilitating a public and private sectors’ collaboration regarding the Conclave in India. This, according to him, enabled the delegation to learn a lot, especially in the areas of ICT, ship building and using SMEs to grow the economy among others.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday eulogized the life and times of the late activist and foremost lawyer, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, saying he had always been fascinated about his disposition towards the masses and the people of Nigeria.



Governor Ambode, who spoke at the burial service, held in honour of late Braithwaite at Reverend Braithwaite Memorial Anglican Church, Epe, said he was a beneficiary of the kindness of the Braithwaite family, saying the late nationalist fought for good causes and for Nigerians throughout his lifetime.



He said: "I never thought I would ever be a politician but I have always been very excited about the things Dr. Braithwaite used to propagate and it appears that I have a personal connect around the issues that relate to people and to the masses and that is why we decided, on behalf of the good people of Lagos, that we must honour this very good man and to also immortalize him in a way that people can come to understand those who actually stood for true democracy and also fought for the masses but they never had the opportunity to do what it is that I have a chance to replicate.”



The Governor said apart from the fact that Braithwaite was consistent and persistent in the fight to enthrone better society for all Nigerians, he was also a deeply religious man who contributed positively and immensely to the body of Christ.



He also recalled how the late activist started the campaign for positive change and egalitarian society long before the advent of the current administration which is known for its change mantra.



"I just want to encourage the family because we are celebrating and we know that those yet unborn will read about what Dr. Braithwaite actually stood for. He was a foremost lawyer, statesman and an activist. He spent all his life fighting good causes especially for the common man. He fought for what he believed in and he had strong conviction to be the voice of the voiceless and whatever it is that we are advocating as change today has actually been manifested from all the things he had preached about.



"He was consistent and persistent in the fight to enthrone better society for all Nigerians. He was deeply religious and this church is one of his contributions. He has left good footprints on the sand of time for us, including myself to follow and his efforts will never be in vain," the Governor said.



In his sermon, Bishop of Lagos Anglican Diocese, Most Revd. Dr Adebola Ademowo said from the testimonies of people about the late Braithwaite, he sure led an impactful life and queried the congregation about what people would say as well concerning them.



Drawing his lessons from the book of Matthew 25: 14-21, Romans 12: 6 and 1Peter 4:10, Ademowo said Braithwaite never buried his talent but used it to fight against corruption, injustice and a system promoting mediocrity and criminal wealth.



The clergyman said Nigeria is a complex country with myriads of bad users of talents, and advocated that the national rebirth of the country must start with all through inculcation of virtues of selflessness, honesty, integrity, among others.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, says his children are also facing the effects of the poor electricity supply presently being experienced in the country. He said they suffer from heat rashes, sweat a lot and also wonder what exactly he, as the minister in charge of power, is doing about the electricity challenge.



Fashola said this while speaking on Channels TV yesterday

"It's a very hot season of the year. I see my children too sweating, having heat rash and they look at me like what are you doing about this thing. Let me be very clear, this problem can be solved. It needs detailed and methodical approach. First work to do is to supply more gas because without gas, I am like a generator owner who can't get fuel, so I can't power my plants. There are errors of planning of yesterday but they are errors that can be corrected"he said.

The United States said today that the Boko Haram terrorists pose s serious threat to Nigeria’s security, despite the seeming progress made by Nigeria in containing them

In a statement by the White House today, the US government acknowledged Nigeria’s progress in combating Boko Haram, adding that the United States has assisted Nigerian authorities working to secure the release of schoolgirls kidnapped by the militants.

The statement did not spell out the specific things done with respect to the latter.

“The threat still remains and it is quite serious, and it is why the United States continues to be committed to supporting them as they counter that threat,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at a daily press briefing.]]]

Six National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) members in Sokoto State are to repeat the service year for various offences, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mr Thomas Yamma, has said.

Yamma said on Thursday in Sokoto at the passing out ceremony of the NYSC batch ” A” corps members deployed to the state, that the action was taken to serve as deterrent to serving corps members.

He said four other corps members have had their service year extended by two months.

“This is a punitive measure taken against the erring corps members for violating the rules and regulations of the corps.

“Three other corps members were bestowed with the state’s prestigious merit award, four others got the chairman’s awards, while several others got commendation letters.”

The coordinator commended the state government, Sokoto Sultanate Council, and people of the state in general for their sustained moral and financial support to the corps.

In his remark, Chairman of the State NYSC Governing Board, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar, assured that the government would continue to give priority to the welfare and security of all corps members deployed to the state.

A total 2041 corps members passed out at the event.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today arraigned one Adekunle Yakub Asuni before Justice. I.B. Gafai of the Federal High Court Awka, Anambra State on a four count charge for attempting to steal N7 million by false pretence.
EFCC said the money was to be spirited from the account of one Abdullahi Adamu and said offence contravenes the provisions of section 8 (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act. 2006.

The accused person pleaded not guilty on all counts of the charge preferred against him by the EFCC, while the prosecuting counsel Musa Gwani prayed the court to fix a trial date and remand the accused person in prison custody.
But the defense counsel Kennedy Ikuka pleaded with the court to grant the accused person bail on the ground that the offence was a bailable one.

One of the counts read:
“That you Adekunle Yakub Asuni on the 4th of March, 2016 at Akwa within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria attempted to induce Access Bank Plc to deliver/transfer the sum of N7,000.000.00 (Seven Million Naria) from account No, 0046119649 in the name of Abdullahi Adamu to account No, 0020220860 belonging to Salisu Abubakar on the pretext that you are Abdullahi Adamu, a claim you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 8(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1(3)of the same Act”.

But before adjourning to 25 May, Justice Gafai granted the accused bail in the following conditions: two sureties not below grade level 8 either in the employment of State or Federal government, must be resident in Awka, and both office and residential addresses duly verified by deputy court registrar.

A Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi on Monday remanded a 25-year-old herdsman, Jooji Bature in prison custody for allegedly killing two policemen.

Bature of Awe town, Nasarawa State was arraigned for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide contrary to Sections 97 and 222 of the Penal Code of Benue state, 2004.

According to the Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Iorundu, a team of policemen led by DSP Vincent Orokpo, were on patrol at Tomahaa Village, Mbaya-Tombo in Buruku when they encountered a group of armed herdsmen.

“The herdsmen who were armed with dangerous weapons like guns, cutlasses and sticks, attacked the policemen on patrol without any provocation.

He said the herdsmen fired at the policemen and shot Cpl. Aikwu Ahmed to death on the spot while Cpl. Lazarus Usman, who sustained gunshots injuries died at Buruku General Hospital.
