Nigeria hosted Egypt in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Friday and a lot of fans turned out to watch it live. So many in fact, that they crammed into every nook and cranny of the stadium. In ways that seem incredibly dangerous. The scenes look incredibly dangerous, but fortunately it looks like everyone made it out of the stadium safely. No casualty reported.

Two men, trapped while working in an underground tank at a filling station in Lagos died on Friday.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Mr Rasaq Fadipe, confirmed the development in an interview with NAN.

He said that the men were working on routine maintenance of the tank when the incident happened.

Fadipe said that the men were working at Fatgbems Filling Station at Ojodu, Berger before one of them got trapped in the tank.

He said that the men died before fire servicemen could rescue them.

“We got the call at about 7.09 a.m. We were told that one of the men inside the underground tank shouted for help but later collapsed.

“The second man, who was the supervisor for the work, decided to go and rescue them against people’s advice and he also inhaled fuel fumes from the tank and collapsed.

“Our men brought out their dead bodies and handed the body over to police officers from the Ojodu Division, who later took them to the mortuary,’’ Fadipe said.

He advised members of the public against putting their lives in danger, saying that rescue operations should be left for professionals.

NNPC released this statement this morning, assuring Nigerians that fuel scarcity will end in the weeks ahead. The statement also said that Kachikwu's statement that the fuel situation will be normalized within the next two months was misrepresented.

The Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rivers State, Bro. Felix Obuah has condemned the alleged airlift and release of N5billion to the Minister of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi by agents of the Federal Government for the purpose of compromising INEC personnel and security agents participating in the Rivers rerun elections.


In a statement by Pastor Jerry Needam, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Rivers State PDP Chairman, Bro Felix Obuah, the party called on the international community and relevant security agencies to investigate the release and distribution of the said N5billion which appalled passengers of the commercial airline as it was offloaded into CBN trucks on the tarmac of the Port Harcourt International Airport.

The party added that all those found to be involved in this alleged illegal trafficking of funds for the rerun elections should be prosecuted.

It will be recalled that online q pictures of a commercial airline offloading N5billion into trucks of the CBN on Friday night at the Port Harcourt International Airport shocked the world as the funds were released on a day declared public holiday.

The tribute written by President Buhari is entitled "James Ocholi taught us the meaning of loyalty". Read below
How do I begin to pay this tribute to a man who was the epitome of civility, the archetype of intellectualism, and the paragon of loyalty? How do I begin to mourn James Ocholi, whom you can describe as one of my right hand men in the quest to reposition our country, and fashion a land of peace and prosperity, where no man is oppressed?
A lot has been written about Ocholi since the tragic event of March 6, 2016, which took the life of our Minister of State, Labour and Employment, his wife, Blessing, and his son, Joshua. And a lot more will be written, for Ocholi was no mean man. He was a man among men, an Iroko in a forest of trees. How are the mighty fallen!
Among many other positive and pleasant things, I will always remember Ocholi for his loyalty to our beloved country Nigeria, loyalty to our party, the All Progressives Congress, and loyalty to our administration, in which he had served for just about 4 months, before death took him.
In 2011, Ocholi ran to be governor of Kogi State on the platform of our then party, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). I believed so much in him, and in his ability to add value to the governance of his state, that I followed him round the state on campaign. We visited all the local governments, visited the paramount rulers, and urged the people to vote in a worthy man as governor. But politics is a peculiar game in Nigeria. The best often does not win.
Ocholi did not win. But he bore it gracefully.
In 2015, he threw his hat into the ring again. He sought to be governor on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), a party he had helped midwife. He still did not win at the party primaries, an eventuality he bore gracefully again.
When the APC was being negotiated into existence among the Legacy Parties, Ocholi did a yeoman's job, contributing his quota to the legal processes. This he did under a junior lawyer, who was not a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) like him then. But what mattered to Ocholi was the birth of a strong, solid party, which could wrest power at the centre, and bring change to our country. Hierarchy is important in the legal profession, just as it is in the military.
But Ocholi subordinated pride and ego, served under his subordinate, and APC was born.
Dream became reality.
Steadily but sure-footedly, he was part of the Change Cabinet, resolved to bring our country from out of the woods, and pedestal Nigeria among the greats in the comity of nations. Then the unthinkable happened. The Grim Reaper harvested Ocholi. What a pity! Sad and tragic.
But we have this consolation: the departed has taught us fidelity, commitment and loyalty to party, to government, and to God.
He will be sorely missed.

Ahead of the Rivers state rerun election for House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate members, former Rivers state governor and Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has asked people of the state to come out en-mass and vote for APC so as to shame former President Jonathan, his wife Patience and the present governor of the state, Nyesom Wike.

Amaechi said this while speaking at a townhall meeting with members of Afara community in the state today March 15th. Amaechi alleged that the former President worked against the progress of the state by "forcing" Nyesom Wike on them as their governor

"We must stop Nyesom Wike and the only way we can stop him is to vote the APC in the house of representatives, house of assembly and senate. I built a secondary school and it has been taken over by weeds. It is the punishment that former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, in her bid to get money from me, did on us. They forced Wike on us without election. In their time, they threw APC members into detention, but is there any PDP member in detention now? That’s the difference between them and us. This is our opportunity to vote and put shame on them; we have to put shame on three persons: the first person is the former president, the second, is his wife and the third is Wike. The fourth is those who do not recognise the use of card reader, those who first said the magnitude of violence in Rivers was too heavy and moved the election tribunal to Abuja, but later came back to say there was no election, we leave them to God"he said

Bolaji Kalejaiye was shot in the stomach during the Mile12 ethnic crisis that happened on March 3rd. A stray bullet hit the 16 year old as he was returning from his JAMB examination center when he was hit. He was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where he is presently receiving treatment. Human rights activist Joe Okei-Odumakin shared these photos from his hospital bed.

"To the deceased one Akabuike Onyedika of about 22 years, he never knew that his exit from the world would have been so untimely and through the process that brought about his death.Before now,the deceased has been hale hearty and always engage in his bricklaying profession until on 5/3/16 when he was sited by team of police men from where he allegedly hung himself under a cashew tree in the bush.
The Deceased Akubuike Onyedika who is believed to be from in Isiukwuato Abia state and a bricklayer living at Umunkpume orba in Udenu Local Government Area Of Enugu state was said to have gone out and never seen until security operatives were alerted who upon information conducted a search where the deceased was seen hung under a cashew tree with rope on his neck.A full scale investigations have commenced into the alleged incident while the dead body of the deceased is now deposited at Prince Eze Hospital Mortuary Obolloafor for necessary action"

A Nigerian drug dealer, Odunze, 29, was arrested by Pattaya, Thailand police on Monday, March 7 with two packs of crystal methamphetamine.

According to Pol.Lt.Col.Chitdecha Songhong- deputy superintendent of Na Jomtien police station, a sting operation was set up in order to apprehend him after the authorities learned of his activities.

The police officers had oreviously arrested a local drug agent who claimed that he bought the drug from Chinedu. Later the police officers planned to buy the drug from Chinedu in front of a McDonalds shop. The police’s spy met Chinedu who was accompanied by his Thai wife.

However, Chinedu realized that he was tricked and attempted to escape with his car and crashed into two villagers injuring them. The police officers chased him until they finally arrested him in Soi Sukhumvit 46 road. His Thai wife fled away with packs of drug.

During interrogation, Chinedu confessed that he and his Thai wife have dealt with drug for a long time. Investigation is ongoing and if found guilty, he will be prosecuted according to Thai law.

18 persons including a woman and her 6 months old baby have been confirmed dead in the 5- storey building collapse that happened at Chisco bus stop, opposite Oando Gas Station in the Lekki area of Lagos yesterday March 8th. President Buhari has approved the immediate unbundling of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, into seven independent operational units. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, made this known today March 8th. According to Kachiukwu, the new units are Upstream, Downstream, Gas & Power, Refineries, Ventures, Corporate Planning & Services and Finance and Accounts.

He said each of the units would be headed by chief executive officers, namely Bello Rabiu for Upstream; Henry Ikem-Onih (downstream); Anibor Kragha (Refineries); Saudu Mohammed (Gas & Power), Babatunde Adeniran (Ventures), Isiaka Abdulrasaq Finance & Accounting and Isa Inuwa ‎Executive Head, Corporate Planning and Services.

All appointments take immediate effect.
