The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the continued incarceration of its spokesman, Chief Olisa Metuh by the EFCC since Tuesday, without charging him to court, clearly shows the dictatorial character of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC Federal Government, which has not hidden its disdain for rule of law and an appetite to gag the opposition.


The party said the continued detention is in clear breach of Chief Metuh’s constitutionally guaranteed liberty and fundamental rights.

The PDP in a statement signed by the National Legal Adviser, Barr. Victor Kwon on Saturday stressed that relying on a purported ‘holding charge’ said to have been derived from a Magistrate to detain Chief Metuh beyond the statutory period allowed by the law is in total violation of the constitution and extant corresponding rulings by several trial and appellate courts in the country.

“We draw the attention of all Nigerians and the international community to this illegal clamp-down on the opposition spokesman by the EFCC, using a purported holding charge said to have been derived from a magistrate court.

“Holding Charge which implies ‘arrest before investigation’ instead of ‘investigation before arrest’ is clearly an aberration and abuse of judicial process which has since been declared by several courts as illegal, null and void, and of no effect as it is totally in contradiction with section 35 (1), (4), (5a) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The PDP is particularly worried that Chief Metuh, since his arrest on Tuesday, is being inhumanly kept in an underground cell where he is daily threatened by officials, who we gathered, have been mounting pressure on him to accept guilt of fictitious figures and implicate PDP leaders.

“The public is very much aware that the EFCC Chairman has visited the Presidential villa at least twice since Chief Metuh was arrested and detained by the commission, ostensibly to get further directives on the case.

“We invite the world to note that President Buhari's election promise of fighting corruption has now been turned into a man-hunt of PDP leaders, while known corrupt APC leaders are being shielded by the system and rewarded with ministerial positions and other government appointments.

“Our nation is now being turned into a police state with its inherent constitutional violations and infringement on rights of citizens, a scenario which poses grave danger to national stability and survival of our democracy.

“The PDP strongly cautions against the avoidable tension and looming political crisis over the continuous clamp-down on our leaders and particularly, the continued incarceration of our spokesperson, Chief Olisa Metuh, who was arrested a few days after he confronted the Federal Government and the APC over their dictatorial pronouncements and actions.

“Our teeming members across the country have so far exercised reasonable restrain, but we caution that there is a limit to what they can stomach in the face of this brazen persecution of our spokesman. The President Buhari-led APC government and the EFCC should therefore hold themselves responsible should there be any breakdown of law and order in the land over this matter.

“We therefore reinforce our demand on the EFCC to respect the course of law and release Chief Metuh immediately or charge him to court in line with the provisions of our laws if it strongly feels it has a case against him.

“Nigerians cannot afford to return to the era of dictatorship where constitutional provisions, respect for lawful processes and personal freedom of citizens under the law are trampled upon. Their response to this might come with very dire consequences.

An unidentified middle age man was electrocuted at the early hours of Sunday while trying to steal electric cable at a power supply installation in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident happened at Accra Crescent by LEA Primary School, Unguwar Rimi.

The traditional ruler of teh area, Dan Iyar Unguwar Rimi, Alhaji Muhammad Gidado, confirmed the incident.

Gidado said that the corpse of the vandal was evacuated from the scene by the police from Unguwar Rimi Division.

According to him, the vandal was unknown to them in the area and urged law enforcement agencies to step-up patrol as the community has suffered from the activities of vandals lately.

Gidado explained that the deceased tried to steal the 150mm four core up-riser cable at the distribution sub-station along Accra Crescent when nemesis caught up with him.

The Head, Corporate Communications of Kaduna Electric, the operator of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Mr Abdulazeez Abdullahi, also confirmed the incident.

He appealed to customers of the company to be more vigilant and report suspicious movement around power supply installations to the police, especially in the night.

Abdullahi lamented that the activities of these hoodlums was causing set back to the company’s effort at providing steady power supply to its customers.

He warned criminal elements to desist from damaging or removing power supply equipment as the consequence could be very tragic.

Meanwhile, the police said it was investigating the incident with a view to arresting the collaborators of the act and preventing reoccurence.

Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima has described the funds alleged to have been stolen in the $2.1 billion arms deal scandal which is now being described as Dasukigate on social media, as blood money. While playing host to Ladan Salihu, the director-general of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria in Maiduguri last week, Shettima said the “arms scandal” is a crime against humanity.

“The revelations from dasukigate have shown that some sections of the northern political class and their children were all involved in this massive crime against humanity. This is blood money. What is the difference between all the revelations and the blood money (blood diamond) in Liberia and Sierra Leone and Congo?
The money meant to prosecute the war on terror was inhumanly diverted while thousands of civilians and soldiers were killed.”KSM news quotes him as saying He called for speedy trial of everyone involved in the sustenance of the insurgency “by the diversion of the funds”. Shettima also said the security situation in his state had improved and that only two local government areas are under Boko haram's captivity. “Six months ago, all the entry points into Maiduguri were inaccessible except to Kano. Months ago when I raised the issue of Boko Haram insurgency, I was called names and vilified, but I had to dare the tiger. I told the world what we were going through then in Maiduguri. I know by speaking out, I would face dire consequences but I had the mandate of over six million people of Borno state to tell the world what was happening. A contingent of 140 Nigerian Formed Police Unit Officers (FPU) serving on the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was on Saturday, December 26, awarded certificates for their distinguished service after completing their one year tour of duty.

The FPU of AMISOM police component is tasked with, among other requirements, conducting cordon and search operations, provision of escort and guard duties, conducting day and night patrols with their Somali counterparts and public order management. Nigeria is one of the five Police Contributing Countries (PCCs) to AMISOM. Others are Uganda, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Ghana.

Thousands of Market Women, Men and Youths on Monday celebrated Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for turning around their fortunes and executing key road infrastructure in markets across the state.

The traders of Mile Three Market in Port Harcourt took over the Bishop Okoye road under construction, chanting pro-Wike and PDP songs all through.


Addressing the traders after his project inspection, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike declared that the Rivers State PDP has nothing to worry about in relation to political developments because the people are with the party.

Governor Wike declared in Pidgin English : "Man wey dey with im people no dey fear. I dey kampe"


The Governor expressed happiness that thousands of the market women, men and youths spontaneously welcomed him and are in support of his development projects.


He said that the Bishop Okoye road which is in the Mile 3 Market is the last road under construction in Diobu suburb. He said the road will be completed in January, 2016.

The governor added that the market will be reconstructed in January, 2016 to give the traders a conducive environment for their businesses.

He said : "I am happy with the acceptance as a result of our commitment to the ideals of development. You know know that I am committed to the development of the state and so is the PDP. I am grateful that you have rejected all the failures and traitors ".

The Governor's project inspection to Mile 3 Market turned into a carnival as the traders sang all the way through all the rehabilitated sections of the market.

Nigeria Senate President Bukola Saraki on Monday, December 21, met with a delegation of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) headed by Mr. Waheed Odusile, the National President of the organization.

In their discussion, the NUJ asked for legislative support to ensure the robust engagement of journalists in the Nigerian project. Controversial Nigerian Pastor T.B. Joshua of The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) has been named as the 2015 ‘Yoruba Man Of The Year’ by the ‘Egbe Omo Oodua Parapo’, a coalition of 35 Pan-Yoruba groups drawn from across the world.

Former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, says “inexperience” rather than “incompetent” was the right word to describe former President Goodluck Jonathan who lost his re-election bid in March.


Speaking with The Interview magazine in the December 2015 edition which is currently on sale, Babangida said Jonathan “is a very pleasant person” and said he believed the former president meant well for the country.

Asked about the perception that Jonathan is a good person but was “incompetent”, Babangida replied: “If you use inexperience, I will buy that.” He refused to disclose whom he really supported between Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, who eventually won the election.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the commitment of his administration to the protection of free speech in keeping with democratic tradition.



The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu who was reacting to the public hostility towards the social media bill now being debated by the Senate, said President Buhari has sworn to defend the constitution of Nigeria and would not lend his hand to anything that is inconsistent with the constitution.

“But he is not averse to lawful regulation, so long as that is done within the ambit of the constitution which he swore to uphold.”

“The President said free speech is central to democratic societies anywhere in the world. The President explained that without free speech, elected representatives won’t be able to gauge public feelings and moods about governance issues.

“As a key component of democratic principles,” the President acknowledged that people in democratic societies “are so emotionally attached to free speech that they would defend it with all their might.”

“Malam Garba Shehu explained that President Buhari is fully aware of the public reservations about the proposed legislation but assured that there is no cause for alarm “because the Senate is a democratic senate. The President won’t assent to any legislation that may be inconsistent with the constitution of Nigeria.”

Pastor Joan Godwin, the founder of Great Word Ministries in Asaba was killed last week Friday in that Dangote trailer accident in Asaba, Delta state that left at least 10 people dead.

She will be laid to rest in her hometown this Friday in Isiala Ngwa South, Abia State. Her family say she was so kind, passionate, and dedicated her whole life to serving God. May her soul rest in peace, amen.

The mother and daughter identified as Uche Nweze and Ukamaka from Ijo-ozalla in Igboetiti local Government Area of Enugu state, allegedly fell into a well on Wednesday Nov. 11, and drowned. According to a statement by Enugu State Police Command, the corpses were recovered and deposited at Zim Uzo Hospital Mortuary Igbo etiti for post mortem examination. Meanwhile, investigation has since been launched to find out the circumstances surrounding their death. Already, four suspects are helping the police in their investigations. A man was attacked and robbed at Berger bridge, mile 2 at about 6:30 am on his way to work. Just as he was approaching the bridge, 3 boys about the ages 18-20 years ran to the vehicle and demanded for his valuables. He handed them his money and mobile phone. One of the robbers then used a big stone to shatter the back glass, looking for other valuables.

Just as the robbers were getting away, the man noticed they didn't have any weapon on them just big stones, he then ran after them and caught the guy who took his phone and broke his glass. He got his mobile phone back and was injured as a result of this incident.

The unlucky thief was beaten ruthlessly and handed over to Kirikiri police.

The young man pictured above allegedly killed his own grandmother over house rent issue in Benin. According to a Newshelm source, the man and his grandmother had been fighting for years over property ownership of the house. The man claimed his late mother owned the house and bequitted to him but the grandmother insisted the house, located at Benin technical college rd, Ugbowo, belonged to her.

And in the early hours of today Nov. 20th, the man asked his grandmother for the rent she'd collected from the tenant in the house - N15,000 - and when the grandmother refused, the two got into a shouting matching and before anyone could stop him, he picked a cutlass and attacked the old lady.

When neighbours got wind of what he'd done, they descended on the boy and nearly beat him to death. He was later handed over to the division of Ukoro police station officers, who came and took him away.
