The Nairaland Movie Club Start Point A thread dedicated to movie reviews, likes, dislikes, everything and anything on a particular movie. A thread solely for thrashing out details missing or too obvious in a movie. A thread for detailed and informed analysis on a chosen movie, where its flaws and good sides are thrashed out. Simply, a movie lover's haven for informed analysis on movies. Concept Ever heard of a study group? Yeah, this is how the Movie Group is also. We, members, come together, choose movies to go watch, come back and bare everything about the movie. The highs and the lows, the good and the bad, everything and anything, and at the end of every review, we rate the movie and see how it fares. How it Works Like explained before, it works like a study group. The Movie Group would work with members agreeing to see a particular movie from a pool, we give ourselves a week to go see the movie, then we all come together after a week to thrash out the movie, rate it, then agree on a new one to see, go watch, come back and thrash it out. . .so the cycle continues. Membership This is quite important. Qualification for membership is ultimately your obvious love for movies. Then you must be able to analyse critically without any form of bias. Your analysis must be informed and relevant irrespective of the side of the divide your view falls. If you meet these requirements, game on!. your a member. . . .and of course you must have access to the internet. . lol Choosing Movies Movies would be chosen everyweek. It would be chosen from a pool of movies. Here is how the pool works. We suggest movies we'll like to see, it goes into the pool, then by votes, we pick one. Note: Every movie in the pool would be seen. In choosing movies, every genre would be considered. so the pool has to be full. We suggest movies from all genres, and every week we get to see a different kinda movie. If there are any questions, post 'em here. . . and for starts, lets review Slumdog Millionnaire. Many people have seen it thus, the choice. And while we review, drop a movie into the pool you would like us to see. So by next week, we choose a movie from the pool by votes. The Movie Club starts. . .

So, I take it we can start posting reviews and ratings next week or before it. I really hope numbskulls don't spoil the thread. I'll invite Spikyn. That dude dissects movies like lab rats. Good work Jk |

Re: The Movie Club by justkunmi(m): 2:01pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
@ Sauron We need reviews. Give reasons for your views. Why is the plot tactless? @topic This movie, if not for anything, is successful because it caught the attention of everybody. It is very sober, yet active. It catches your attention and makes you slow down from all the fast paced stuff moving around you. One thing for me is the way the director chose to tell the story. The story was told in flashbacks. The entirety of the story was shown to us from memories, flashbacks and thoughts. Very rare and very beautiful way of telling a story. And I think that is one of the reasons the movie caught a whole lot of attention. The highs of the movie for me, are the plot, casting, dialogue, continuity and relevance to its content. The plot is very easy to understand and very practical. A poor boy from Mumbai gets on a money spinning show to catch the attention of a girl. While on the show, questions are asked and the answer to each question is laced and buried in his past. His childhood. So he has to get back into his past, shown to us through flashbacks, bring out the answers and answer the questions. But the last question though, about the 3 Musketeers, he depended on sheer luck to answer, and he won the grand prize, Casting those little Indian boys was very beautiful. They acted like naturals and it was a beautiful sight. and the continuity was nice. Nice flow through all the ages. . Very nice work. The movie also had some native humour. Jamal and his brother found themselves in the Taj Mahal and pretended to be tour escorts, he was explaining it was built by ,Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his late wife Mumtaz Mahal. A woman asked. "Oh, how did his wife die"? Jamal said, "In a tragic motor accident" The woman looked perplexed and said. "But I heard she died during child birth" Jamal, looking cornered said, "Yeah, on the road to the hospital". Real nice work from Danny Boyle and the actors. nice, nice. I would rate it 75%. For The Pool : The Curious Case of Benjamin Button |

Sauron, that aint no way to review a movie. You hate it and you think it's overrated, sure and I respect that, but you gotta take an objective stand point and analyse it. At least tell us why you think it's a tactless flop |

justkunmi: Hmm. . . . how exactly does this work? How many people are allowed to give reviews before a new movie is suggested for review? |
Re: The Movie Club by Treetop20(m): 2:31pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
Body of lies Wonderful movie with great moral twists and turns sometimes, i wonder who played who. |
Re: The Movie Club by Sauron1: 2:46pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
justkunmi: vescucci: Firstly, there are no surprises in the movie. It was synonymous to a Nollywood movie. . . . . .I knew what would happen in the end by watching the first 20 mins. Why was there a story behind every question asked in the game show?? Just because ma brother shoots to kill someone with a gun would make me know Samuel Colt invented a revolver?? Letz be honest, that was a lame attempt at fantasy. The editing also sucked. . . . .So many flashbacks. Countless disjointed scenes that could get simple-minded audience confused. There was a scene Jamal smacked his brother vowing never to forgive him. Poor editing made it look like a dream sequence 10 mins later. Then the closing credits . . . . . .The whole Bollywood dance was highly unnecessary. It messed up the tone of the script. A dude dies in the previous 2 mins and then you have some lunatics dancing and merrying. The intent was decent but the editing and the way the script was chained together was abysmal. It has to be the most overrated movie in the world. Rubbish Rubbish Rubbish. I felt cheated after watching it. I would rate it 33.3333333333333333333333333333333333333% |
Re: The Movie Club by justkunmi(m): 3:04pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
spikedcylinder: @spikedcylinder As many reviews as possible. there is no limit to the number of reviews on a movie. infact, the more the merrier. Review on a movie stops when we choose a new one which I think should be weekly. so right now, Slumdog Millionaire is on review. Lets have yours. |
Re: The Movie Club by vescucci(m): 3:09pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
Now that's what I'm talking about Sauron. At this rate I'll have little to review o. Everything I say will seem dubbed. Spike. Welcome ma! |
Re: The Movie Club by vescucci(m): 3:21pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
Slumdog Millionaire is a feel-good moral bye inspiring film. That said, the movie starts by asking a question and thus it can be deduced what ending the film will have: Jamal wins the grand prize. As far as surprises go, this film is not a Shyamalan thriller. It's strength is in its story and how it identifies with the viewer. The obvious flaw will be the far-fetched nature of how Jamal learnt some of the answers. Not all scenarios are plausible |

Re: The Movie Club by tboy1(m): 3:30pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
@ Justkunmi so we gonna review 1 movie for a whole week - BORING!!! Slumdog Review : Only thing 2 things i enjoyed was the story line and the actors/actresses did a very good job @vescucci stop posting twice man |
Re: The Movie Club by vescucci(m): 3:41pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
tboy1, a girl I used to know called me tboy, and you spelt my name right; I like you already. As for posting twice it's my phone's fault. Contd. This brings us back to the answer to the initial question: destiny. Destiny can not be expected to follow norms or else, the blind boy would never ever have been within ten yards of a hundred dollar bill, let alone know its smell and whose picture is on it. At least not in India. |
Re: The Movie Club by vescucci(m): 3:50pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
Contd. So, on the account of destiny the film may be excused with stretching reality a little. On to the mode of storytelling. Flashbacks. For me, this option is more of a pragmatic one than an ingenious one. There just isn't a better way to tell the story. The dance sequence at the end is simply a tribute to Indian culture and style of film making. It can't be adjudged a part of the movie. My major problems with the film coming up next. |
Re: The Movie Club by mukina2: 3:58pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
so even if "we" do not watch a movie we can come read |
Re: The Movie Club by vescucci(m): 4:34pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
Ah. Muki. Of course you can come read. I've never seen you at the movies section. What gives? It's good u came though, there's a similar thread to this one I think I started by error. Could you, like delete it, please? Contd. The problems I had with the film were two basically. Why does the show host have to be so condescending and hostile? Why does he act like the money at stake is his? Also I don't think the show is supposed to broadcast live |
Re: The Movie Club by vescucci(m): 4:36pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
Contd. The second matter is Salim's obsession with disrupting the amorous link between Jamal and his girl. Is he envious of Jamal's happiness or does he hate the girl's guts and think she's bad for Jamal? Nobody quite knows. That said, I think the kids actors deserve the lion's share of credits. They were beautiful. Also the film has great songs. This is subject to taste & I can't say I listen to indian songs but there's no denying their quality.ive |

Re: The Movie Club by vescucci(m): 4:51pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
Thanks Mukina! In conclusion, Slumdog Millionaire though being so good, hardly deserves all the awards and encomium it got. That tempts me to give it a lower rating than it deserves. But since I'm so objective, I'll rate the film 80%. I only wish it got only 3 oscars instead. NEXT MOVIE |
Re: The Movie Club by iice(f): 5:23pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
JK i made it Muki, read and enjoy - maybe you will find something to watch Slumdog Millionaire Overall it was good. Good technique in using flashbacks to tell the story (flashbacks till almost the very end). Each memory had a lesson to teach, a lesson learned. . . The high lights for me were the use of the City which was very much a vital part of the story. The story of the little kids and there it stopped for me. I didn't find the adult years that much interesting. It felt generic. Best of all? I wasn't bombarded by music every few minutes as i am not a fan of musicals or indian movies. I found the shit scene endearing and hilarious. I think Boyle has a thing for shit |
Re: The Movie Club by justkunmi(m): 5:33pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
@vescucci Yeah, the host of the show was extra hostile. I think the reason he wasn't particularly friendly was because he thought Jamal was cheating one way or the other. Nobody has gotten that far before and he just was not too happy seeing a 'slumdog' taking all the money. He even told him the wrong answer to make him lose out. The movie did well at the oscars because it appealed to a lot of people. The movie is very endearing. you just would fall in love with those 2 little indian boys. Almost the best acting i've seen from kids, Remember how Jamal practically went through shit just to see his fav actor. I watched that part almost five times. It was soooo funny!. iice Heeeeeey! You made it. Welcome to the club. Check ur email, |
Re: The Movie Club by Sauron1: 6:41pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
vescucci: 80% is too generous in ma opinion. |
Re: The Movie Club by vescucci(m): 9:36pm On Apr 17, 2009 |
Hehe. Sauron, there's a difference when I'm reviewing a movie and my personal taste. Personally, I'd rate it 60% cuz it'll never make my top 50 films. Boyle's other film, Trainspotting won't get up to 80% when I review it but I'd give it 90% personally. You dig? It's not the same reason why those lizard breaths at the Academy didn't acknowledge TDK much. In their case, they're just a pack of pipe smoking hideous cunts faking depth. |

Slumdog Millionaire. I thought "Slumdog" was trippy and magical, endearing, if you may. The movie based on the book Q and A, is so well directed and has a strong story line. Danny Boyle seems to have a way with jumbling up situations in such a wierd chronological order that an average movie goer cannot but be impressed! There was no moment in the entire movie when I wanted to get up even to pee. So my advice, pee and enter the cinema or wear pampers and go because the movie is quite long and if you get up from your seat, you will miss a substantial part of the movie. Its not one of those boring Hollywood types that you can tune in and enjoy one hour into the movie. The acting was amazing also as each actor seems to carry you along with the scheme of things. The essence of the slums of India have been shown as opposed the the glitz and colours that characterize typical Indian themed movies. Dont be grossed by the scenes of the slums and the dirtiness around, because that is reality and these situations and worse actually exist in India. However, I have a bit of an issue with the title of the movie - "Slumdog". Before Indian independence, Indians were treated and called dogs, by the British, you know, that bit about racism. And they believed that the dark skinned persons were equal to a dogs. But now, it is very politically incorrect (in India especially) to call people dogs. Any Negro titled movies by the way? Plus, Danny Boyle is British isn't he? Not with the way he's been accused of treating the young Indian actors. . . . Also, Dev Patel seems to be getting most of the accolades for the movie whereas I believe it was not Dev Patel but Ayush Mahesh Khedekar (the youngest Jamal) who should be getting most of the credit as he acted brilliantly and at least 45% of the movie was covered by him. |
