Good Day Nairalanders Quite interesting comments from both divide. This topic will make for an interesting debate. Some very matured comments and as well some temper tantrums. The solution I believe is to collectively create a synergy to help one another. Keep adding value to yourself. Our value is tied to the vacuum our absence creates. I would just add my quota! I am an Instrument and Automation Engineer…I Studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I believe that there are people here who can help me with a job, people of influence. I have heard how some people got jobs via Nairaland and I tap into their testimony. I may never know where this effort will reach, but try I must. While this may appear a little bit awkward, I am fully aware that most jobs in my Profession are not primarily advertised publicly, but many times through proper networking channels i.e. Word-of-Mouth. So I want to use this medium to ask those who work in related field as I do, and as well as those who may not necessarily be in such departments within their Organization but their company require Engineers who are skilled in Instrumentation and Automation systems. I have in-depth understanding and working experience of programming of Different PLCs: ALLEN BRADLEY MICROLOGIX 1400, Delta DVP EX2, SIEMENS SIMATIC S7-300, ABB 07KR51, GE-FANUC VERSAMAX, OMRON, SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC TWIDO and Interfacing with various Control Devices and other third Party devices. I am also skilled in Programming of Honeywell, Delta V and ABB Distributed Control System, use of 475 Field HART Communicator, Pressure Calibrator, Temperature Calibrator, Multi-Function Calibrator etc. I am also familiar with the use different test equipment: HART, DEAD WEIGHT TESTER, overhauling and calibration of control valves and reading and interpretation of P & ID, Electrical Diagrams. I also have experience in teaching and evaluating trainees on the basic principles of Electrical Instrumentation and Control. So I know the value I will be bringing to my organisation. It has taken me considerable investment in time and money to learn. I have attended trainings in Nigeria and abroad to acquire these skills. The industry sector opportunities mainly comprise careers related to continuous operating plants for the following: Chemicals, agrochemicals, petrochemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, cement, paper, polymers, petroleum refining, power generation, oil and gas fields (onshore and offshore), industrial and scientific gas production, pharmaceuticals, breweries, distilleries, food production, processing and beverages, iron, steel and other metal refining companies, textiles and yarn. My job will be as a part of the company that designs these plants, constructs these plants, maintains these plants, sells or services instrumentation and controls for these plants. Some private companies are designated EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) companies. Their construction group does installation and commissioning or in some cases also maintenance. Also there are many other companies only doing construction and installation. My work will include designing Instrumentation and control systems for various process equipment, preparing process and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) and selecting the best instrument, control and/or automation technique from amongst different vendors to suit the process. Remember, however small any job may be, I see to it that I do it; I also keep my mind open for bigger opportunities. I am not sitting idle searching for my dream job. I want to work on new and emerging engineering frontiers. For those still searching for job opportunities do not stop developing yourself. Save money for opportunities to do some core trainings in the areas you seek career progression. It is only those who are prepared that will seize opportunities in their moments. Be rest assured, opportunities will come. Just be prepared. How do I know this? Because when I did not have these skills, opportunities came and I was not prepared. So I acquired them. Also, use the power of the internet to develop yourself. Do not get rusty. There are very good resources online. Finally, Nigeria is woefully inadequate in terms of providing these training opportunities to young graduate professionals with the necessary skills to improve their Employability. There are very few well-equipped training centers in the Country that can adequately impact these skills to students. More so, they are very expensive for our young professionals to afford. However, find the skills you need, and excellently strive to acquire them. Please kindly reach out if you want to talk Instrumentation, Automation, seeking to find new talents for your organisation, business…and also if you love The Arsenal. Summa Cum Laude 3 Likes |

debaj10: Dear Sir, I've done 2 volunteer/ internship positions. What next? It's not all about volunteering jare. The last place I did was an NGO that don't take full staff only contract staff. Even then, they already had enough on ground. Not everyone can afford to volunteer because the bills are real. Man must wack and transport himself /herself. In as much as volunteering is good and enlightening, we should also be realistic in the environment we find ourselves in. And I share your thought that people owe me nada. Company and HR inclusive. Sometimes i really don't know what recruiters and employers want from job seekers. Everyday recruiters keep complaining Nigerian graduates are unemployable when they haven't given the competent ones the opportunity to take over key positions in their firm. The fact we don't have all the necessary skills doesn't make us unemployable because when given the right training we can perform explicitly . My lecturer that taught me geophysic didn't teach us how to apply geological software simply because he don't know how to use the software. He passed such crude knowledge to us and we did the little we could to make it out of school. When i went for internship in a big oil firm after graduation, that's when i know most of what we are taught in school are rubbish. They waste our time in school learning what is not applicable in the real world. We spend time to learn and cram theories whereas what we need to succeed in the real world is pure practical and skillful knowledge. I had the opportunity to learn the applications of geological software for seismic interpretation and fault modeling which my lecturer don't know even as a doctor in the field. Thank God i had the opportunity to learn and develop myself. To mitigate the problem of producing unemployable graduates, our curriculum and teaching methodology need to be re-structured to accommodate practical and skillful knowledge. I went for an interview in an oil firm and the recruiter asked me to tell him more about myself, then i started I am butanep from delta state, studied Geology from University of Benin, an ICT expert in the area of data base management. I am a dynamic fellow because my discipline has exposed me to different areas of life and career. I am a certified safety officer because safety comes first before any work is done effectively. I have a basic idea in the application of geological softwares like petrel and powerlog. I had the opportunity to use them during my industrial training at NNPC. I was able to generate a 3D seismic model on olumu well of the Niger delta basin and also generate a correlation panel to other wells in the basin. I did a paper presentation on the fault history of the Niger delta basin and was given credit for the work. I have plans to publish the work very soon. I am one fellow eager to learn because continuous learning is the key to a successful career. i want to keep developing myself until my impact is felt in the petroleum industry and the Nigeria economy. I am an indispensable tool which any company or organization will love to hire Thanks sire. The man laugh and said i taught you know everything about your field. I was down for a bit but didn't allow it to kill my confidence. i asked that's the little i can say within the shortest possible time. When i wanted to talk more, he said i should stop. some recruiters can be morale killer i swear. Gold45,Aude and the others in the house. please can you tell me what is wrong about the introduction and make possible corrections . Thanks |

butanep: Like I earlier replied someone, I say somethings or ask some questions just to gauge your response. The look on your face alone can be all the answer I need. Then each HR / Recruiter has different things that work for them. To me, I'll say he was trying to test how you handle rude remarks and the likes. Each job has a lot of unspoken requirements. My sis for e.g hates too much questions. If I were to screen her for a position that comes with a lot of customer interaction, I won't pass her for it. I can deliberately be rude, ask off point, waste her time etc just to see how she would react when its a customer. I know she would really hold herself knowing I can decide her fate or not but those split seconds show just how confident, patient or angry she is. I'll bet money that she would explode or give a customer that tries that a cold attitude. Hope you get where I'm coming from. Secondly, when I ask you to tell me about yourself, I mean about yourself not your career history. I like to interview people in a relaxed atmosphere. Most times, its over skype as many aren't in Nigeria. So, its different stokes for different folks. |

You mean, you follow me because you have nothing doing and you reply to my comments because you want to prove 'something'? I really am not your type and i don't want to be associated with you, so please seriously, get a job, i plead with you. You can't win over even the most stupid of girls with this clingy attitude. By the way, I am not you and your praise singers(the phrase is relative, because you are one and the same person), whom never know when & how to criticize constructively...U are a graduate and a 'fresh' one at that, u really should know what I meant in that statement and what I mean in the one you quoted....Or do i really have to state everything to you in black & white?!! coollabman: As in, all these now just to get my attention and discredit me AGAIN?!Its obvious you have nothing doing, but i do not blame you, after all, for the time being u really have nothing doing... Every time dishing out advises you have never for once given yourself......I put it to you once again, you are empty and strangely clingy; characteristics of a little man, you know that for sure, right?....Why peddle talks, what do you stand to gain, does it boost your sex drive, is it like a source of inspiration of some kind?because this is really a deformity of some kind, truly.... First, you created an almost exact moniker to mine and posted something way above your age with it, as if that wasn't enough for you, you discredit me and my writing(yet, i'm beginning to make money from it, and all you have done so far is google a word when you want to reply me on NL), and teach me morals and values, every flipping time, having zero knowledge of same. You tell me i have no character, yet you chase me up and down, profess love to yourself, not me; you tell me i know nothing, but i have worked in places u haven't, ...U say u are a man(that is relative though cuz u really are confused about ur sexuality), yet you act like a demented woman and follow me on NL just to try to get attention and 'subject me', and you tell me i am melodramatic? sincerely, u are just reducing your life span just being on my case. You post something on NL and use your other moniker to defend and like same......Guy u really are not well o! I must tell u, sincerely...... And the crux and most laughable of all your groaning, is your certainty of knowing me,even more than i know myself ('after all you have lived in the same house with me'), without even meeting me or having a tete-a-tete..., sincerely u are either demented or you need help in all honesty......What ever it is you are trying to achieve, you cant achieve it with me..... But then again, keep trying, i assure you you would be very much disappointed, and please continue to bask in the euphoria of talking to me, make it worth your while, while you are at it...... |

Its really very immature and silly, i must say. I sincerely do not want to derail this thread, but this sapiens just keeps following me all about! Unfortunately, u would never see a contribution of his to any thread, yet he says he is a graduate; no constructive criticism of any kind, of course, he lacks the fore sight; all he does is quote me and get attention and derail any thread i comment on. Just do me the favor and ask this Being, like a brother nicely(as all my efforts have proved abortive), to do me the displeasure and unfollow me! Thank you. |

exotiqueify: lolz! bwahahahaha!!! honestly! I didn't read a word from the above post. babe you've got issues. I suggest you start being serious about dealing with them. now some good news for you! I am about to retire this moniker for good. it has outlived the purpose for which it was created. now there are things I want you to do so that this moniker can be buried forever! the first thing I want you to do is to drop your pride (yeah! your pride). it oozes out of your posts. it is not good for a lady to be unnecessarily puffed up and haughty (you're not all that you know). remember! pride goes before a fall the second thing I want you to do is to stop being saucy! the way you dish out verbal assaults (even in written form) shows that you have a fundamental personality flaw. it is written in scripture that bitter water and sweet water cannot flow out of the same spring. the mouth you use in praising God, you don't use it to destroy/curse your fellow human being (no matter the provocation). pls change this attitude of yours. the third thing you should do is already know to you (its actually the first thing I need from you). do the needful for the sake of peace Shalom! 2 Likes |

butanep: This question is about the interviewer getting to know you and what you can bring to the company. He wants to know your skills and experience and maybe get to know you as a person. You started off by talking about your educational background which is already listed in your cv. If the interviewer has done his homework he already knows what is listed in your cv. No need to repeat what is in front of him. This is a very regular question and one that a lot of candidates find difficulty in answering. You are trying to show the interviewer why you are the right person for the job. Also you mentioned that you have " a basic idea in the geological software", that is a big no no. Why would they employ someone who has basic knowledge? All you should have said is you have working knowledge. No company wants to spend money training employees when they can hire experienced people. You should start off your answer by talking about what you are currently doing and linking it to the skills that you would bring to this new position. My advice would be to google this question and read the various articles that talk about answering this question. Try to limit your answer to a few minutes and put yourself in the place of the interviewer. What would a candidate say that would make you want to get to know more about them. Remember that the interview process can be also boring to the interviewer and they would be certainly happy to meet candidates that can pique their interest and appear to know what they are doing. 1 Like |

I am really amazed at the number of people who have reached out to me and it definitely shows that there is a huge need for African universities to prepare students for the workforce. Sometimes it is so easy to forget that we also made mistakes like the younger generation. As a piece of advice when writing to a recruiter never write that you are a jobless graduate, it gives a negative connotation. You can phrase it as " A graduate searching for a/an .... position".
