Thanx again doc. You are making it clear to me now. Exactly my thought 'anal fissure' because it fills like a wound. But i dont experience it anymore, except the long waiting witout feaces. Some say i dont take enough water. But anytime i take oily fish it helps me empty my bowels.

I think you should simply take as much water as would quench your thirst. People have different rates of passing stools,; some daily, and some once a week. You didn't exactly say you used to pass hard stools and in any case the matter you say has been resolved so I suggest you observe your usual diet with perhaps a little more fibre (fruits and vegetables) added, and o.k, maybe a little extra water to wash down your food.

O.k, well the cause could be of an airway disease problem (upper airway or lower), a cardio-vascular ailment (the heart works in close circuit with respiration) or even Anaemia, in which the capacity of the blood to receive Oxygen from the lungs, is reduced.

Treatment and Prevention can then be specified once your doctor determines the specific cause.

Hi Doc, I want to commend you on your good work. I don't know if the question i have has been treated before, if it has my apologies.

I would like to know if multivitamin supplements are really necessary. I once heard that if you are above 30 it is advisable to start using them. On the other hand I have a doctor friend who told me they are not really necessary as long as you eat a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables.

So what is your take? Is it a good idea to take them or do I just need to take more fruits and vegetables. At present what I do is morning and night I squeeze two limes into a glass of water and drink.

If you opinion is that multivitamin supplements  are not needed, will that change for someone who is more active physically than the average person (I jog 30 - 35 minutes thrice a week and workout with weights 5 days a week).

Thanks and once again kudos for the good work.

Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by surgeon(m): 5:39pm On Sep 03, 2010
@kingpins

Recurring shoulder dislocation can be difficult to manage indeed, without surgery. I was discussing the matter about 3 weeks ago with our orthopaedic surgeon - there was this young man who came in with the exact same problem as yours.

A body bandage applied for about 4 weeks is what would have been required at the initial dislocation - this is a bandage wrapped around the body with the affected limb tucked inside the wrap, of course, after reduction of the dislocation, first. This ensures a full healing of the over-stretched, weakened rotator cuff muscles that keep the joint in proper place, otherwise a high tendency of a recurrence is usual, as is the case with you.

A body bandage at this late stage, is virtually ineffective - so says the specialist I discussed with. The lasting remedy is surgical operation that will firm-up the rotator cuff muscles around thw ball of the shoulder joint.

@Olami099

I've suggested a cure for your Pimples few days back when I replied your post.

I suggest that you stop all types of spot-fading creams first, and then wait for a while - about 2 months. Your normal facial tone should become even again after the effect of the cream would have worn off.

You can right-away get this prescription for the Pimples: Capsules TETRACYCLINE 500mg every 6 hours for 10 days.

@1759

I agree with your doctor that in general, a balanced diet inclusive of fruits and vegetables, would make multivitamin suppliments un-necessary.

However, multivitamin suppliments are greatly beneficial for those under a higher metabolic turn-over like yourself (due to your regular exercice activity) or those who have been depleted of the normal serum vitamin levels as in people recovering from an illness, particularly chronic ones.

Combining fruits and vegetables with multiviatamins (recommended daily doses ) is o.k.

Hi, @glomerry. I hope it was a doctor who was directing the affairs in all of the happenings you have mentioned here. Believe me when I say that half-knowledge can kill.

Here is what you should do. First, bare in mind that you may not even have a big issue; forget the laboratory results of Staph Aureus, etc.

Forget them that is, until you are being directed by a real doctor alone, to know the real issue.

@ solo2

If it's just noise and no other description of discomfort like pain or bloatedness, and if there are no other associated symptoms of ill-health, then no problem there. It's probably normal bowel sounds.

Please Doctor, My friend's wife who is pregnant for about 2(two) months was diagnosed to have typhoid and malaria. The Family doctor prescribed the following drugs for her.
Coartem, Amoxyl, Folic Acid and Paracetamol. He intend not to include Amoxyl as part of the drugs he wants to get for the wife. Is there any harmful effect of Amoxyl to pregnant women. Tnx for your response.

Select a brand that is a house-hold name, and that contains Iron, Folic acid and the B-complex vitamins e.g. Astifer

Your friend likely has Haemorrhoids, and should then get a doctor's check.

You, on the other hand are probably very normal - palpitations and shortness of breath are normal after strenuous activity, particularly if there are no undue chest pains accompanying.

Are you a professional sportsman? The point is, your pains may be explained based on the level of physical strain your body is subjected to. Or a disease - in which case more details about your symptoms, other associated complaints if any, past medical history, genotype, etc needs to be gathered by your doctor to make the right diagnosis.

Asthmatic attacks come in various degrees in the same sufferer. Sometimes it's the weather that determines the severity of an attack. The more severe attacks would not respond to just the inhaler alone - you are better off going to get an assessment from your doctor - he just might have to give you a needle shot of a stronger medication, to cancell-out the asthmatic attack.

While there is no medication to "cure" Asthma, the good thing is that the attacks usually become less severe and far-between, as one gets older.

Amoxycillin is very safe at any stage of pregnancy. I'm not too sure about giving COARTEM in the first trimester of pregnancy. I think this might be contraindicated and so they need to cross-check this with a Gynaecologist.

History, As Nigerian Finds Cure for Diabetes
From Dayo Thomas in Abuja, 02.04.2009

Quote
It’s official – a Nigerian scientist, Dr. Louis Obyo Obyo Nelson, has finally found a cure for the dreaded diabetes disease which afflicts over 123 million sufferers all over the world.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr Aliyu Idi Hong, yesterday described as “epoch and historical” the production of Antidiabetic Phytophar-maceutical by Nelson in collaboration with the Nigerian Pharmaceutical Research and Development.

Diabetes is a potentially life- threatening condition in mammals brought about by an inability of the mammals to produce insulin. Insulin, a polypeptide hormone produced in the pancreas of the mammal, controls the amounts of glucose present in the blood by stimulating the uptake of glucose by the muscle and adipose tissue.

THISDAY had exclusively reported on May 23, 2003 that Nelson had been granted a United States patent entitled “Medicament for the Treatment of Diabetes”, a feat that raised hopes for millions of sufferers of the disease worldwide. It also exclusively reported on June 5, 2003 a confirmation from the US Patent Office that indeed a patent had been made out to the Nigerian scientist.

Hong said yesterday at the signing of an agreement between Nelson and GDPAU, New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, for the commercialisation of an Antidiabetic Phaytopharmaceutical in Abuja that the drug would contribute to the quality of health care all over the world and boost the economy of the country.

The drug, which was said to have been administered on many diabetic victims, has been found to be very safe and highly effective. It was also said to have corrected erective dysfunctions noticed in those victims.

The minister said the drug would expand the landscape of medicare in the world and encourage more researches into herbal drugs in the country.
“I believe that there are so many of such leaves in the bushes in Nigeria that can cure many of these diseases that are proving difficult in the world. This is an epoch and historical day in the history of this country,” he said.

The minister noted that diabetes has posed a serious health challenge worldwide, and is the sixth largest killer in Nigeria.

“There is hardly a house you go to in Nigeria that one person will not be affected by this killer disease,” he said.

He pledged the support of the Federal Government to the efforts of research institutes, especially those who are into herbal medicine research.
Director-General of Nigeria Institute for Pharmaceutical Research, Dr. Ufot Inyang, described as unfortunate the inability of the Federal Gove-rnment to explore the enormous benefits in the herbal market.

He regretted that although the market had the capacity of generating over $100 billion annually, the country was not taking advantage of it.

He said the ongoing global economic crisis would adversely affect the fortunes of Nigerian pharmaceutical companies and stressed the need to focus on the herbal drugs.

“It is an opportunity we have been missing and I don’t want us to miss it again,” he said.

Representative of GDPAU, Prof. Ramesh Pandey, who described the drug as one of the greatest things that will come out of the continent, said it could go a long way in helping to launder the image of the country. He commended the efforts of Nigerian researchers, describing them as one of the best in the world.

The drug will be funded and marketed by a Nigerian company, TREC International Limited. It is estimated that it will cost the company an initial $10 million to deliver the drug to the market.

Nelson recorded a breakthrough in his research for a drug that could cure diabetes when the US government issued him with a patent (No. 6,531,461) for his medication, which can effectively treat Type I and Type II diabetes.

A documented proof of the discovery showed that Nelson, who then resided at Plot 574 Yakubu Gowon Crescent, Asokoro, Abuja, filed his application for a US patent June 4, 2001.

The 'Medicament for the treatment of Diabetes' patent with application No. 09/873,560 was approved March 11 2003.

An official of the United States Patent had confirmed to THISDAY on telephone June 4, 2003 that Nelson was actually granted a patent for his invention of a possible cure for diabetes.

The official, who simply identified herself as Mrs. Robinson, acknowledged that a United States patent with number US 6,531,461 B1 bearing application number 09/873,560 and dated March 11, 2003 was indeed approved for Nelson.

The enquiries at the US patent office followed the interest the story of May 23, 2003 had generated. E-mail dated May 25, 2003 to the United States Patent and Trademark Office seeking to establish the authenticity of Nelson's claim was replied, but with a directive to call the General Information Services Division (GISD) on telephone.

Unlike insulin which has been used for many decades to manage diabetes, Nelson's "wonder" drug can be administered orally, making it possible for patients to administer it as capsule, tablet or syrup. Insulin can only be injected into the body.

The award to Nelson, a graduate of Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, was made on the strength of his research, which determined the exact chemical structure of the active ingredient. The research was also able to determine the quantity of the drug, which could be tolerated in the human body, and yet be able to stem the patient's condition.

Nelson’s drug had been subjected to two clinical trials the last being at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital (UJTH).

At the first clinical trial, the initial extract derived from Vernonia amygdalina was orally administered to 26 patients all of whom had been previously diagnosed as suffering from insulin deficiency. For control, a group of five were used, who maintained diet discipline throughout the trial. The initial extract was dosed to the patients three times daily in 100mg aliquots for six months.

The blood glucose levels of all 31 subjects were closely monitored. It was revealed that the 26 patients receiving the initial extract no longer required maintaining diet discipline after the first month and examination showed remission of the disease after three months.

Fifteen patients were said to have continued receiving medication for the remaining three months of the trial.

The document that accompanied Nelson’s patent application showed that all those who volunteered for the experiment appeared to have recovered from the disease and have returned to their normal life prior to the diagnosis of the disease.

Nelson, 61, who holds a doctorate degree in Molecular and Computational Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, hails from Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

He served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2001, worked with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council.

Keloid is itchy and sometimes painful, general discomfort, We hve been to Luth where the same Kenalog injection with 5 fluorouracil suspension was injected on three weeks interval. Also Elastoplast has been administered too, Yet no improvement or relief,

I get the impression that you are expecting too much from what to me sounds like a normal-working mind. Most people, me inclusive, would read and enjoy an interesting novel, for example, only to forget the details of the story months later. How many Hardley-Chase novels did I thoroughly read and enjoy but now cannot remember a single story-line clearly.

Even the short-term memory confusion you described. It is only rarely you find folks with a photographic memory.

In any case, see your doctor to be sure.

This is unfortunate, seeing that your niece has done everything virtually by the book. Some people are simply just too prone to developing hypertrophic scars and Keloids - any surgical excision would result in the inevitable surgical scar itself becoming hypertrophic. Or, forming a fresh Keloid.

Let her see the right specialist - a Burns & Plastics Surgeon.

You may visit the link above, so see what others have said, and my responses to that. But you don't have to reply there. We are all on Nairaland. So, you can reply here on this particular thread. thanks

I've read what else you have said in the link provided.

I'm suspecting you may have a mild degree of Ischaemic Heart Disease. I think you need to see a Cardiologist, who would do the proper assessment.

A skin snip to investigate for Allergies, I don't think is relevant here. I may be wrong, though.

The Cardiologist, first.
