It is pitiable that many busy themselves here on nairaland on tribalistic battles. Afonjas vs Ipodyoots and the that sort of gibby-gabber.

Well when next you see pictures of ibadan and the obvious predominance of brown roofs remember this.

the brown roof is actually a dipiction of wealth. yes! Those brown roofs you see actually shows wealth. The wealth of the cocoa farmers and merchants.
They were wealthy enough to build storey buildings and put zinc roofing sheet on it. There was no aluminium sheeet in those days.

other states envied Ibadan at that time. They were simply too under developed to compete with ibadan in terms of classic and exotic buildings. Many were still using mud while ibadan was building with blocks and those zinc roofs that are now brown.

nothing lasts forever. Aluminium roofing could become obsolate in some years to come

yoruba's respect for elders. Many want to demolish those old buildings, but the old people still occupying them won't allow it. They keep telling tales of how "baba baba re" built the house igbos on the other hand don't have this problem they can demolish and sell their properties without thinking of history all they measure if the money to be made.

So my fellow afonjas don't be perturbed by the brown roof. It reminds us of the greates city in west africa for decades while other states were still forests

your great ancestor built great cities as what you pride now as your heritage/brown roof. Fine, lets agree and praise your ancestors for their hard work and a job well done.

what of the present generation? what are they doing to reduce the wave of hunger, unemployment, laziness and hooliganism that has ravage their towns

Respect to all the hardworking yorubas. The mike adenugas, otedolas, oba otundeku, seun etc but i think the culture of depending on the central government/helper (herdsMentality) and that annoying sense of entitlement has to be revisited, cos it is doing them no good.

Again the igbos have been ancient traders, with the advent of colonialism and white collar jobs, they never abandoned their trade. that is why you see they have a very large and domineering presence in the informal sector and they have specialized in all sort of trade but my western neighbor who are farmers abandoned farming for white collar jobs. Everybody wants to go to school but not all want to farm, infact that is the beginning of the decline of the Yoruba economy and the rise of laziness and unemployment...

And why did they not go to any place in your beloved east? Oh! They are villages compared to Lagos grin. Talk about slums. Ibo land is full of slums. It is everywhere.
And I was thinking here was someone with a little sense but u just proved u are the highest hypocrite of them all. You started your post by saying all those tribalist on nairaland like u were any different. You could v made ur point without making any reference to the Igbos but no the tribalistic bigot in you wouldn't allow for that to happen. Read all ur post so far on this thread and see your life outside. Brown roof and other terms are wat both parties use in shading themselves here. Wat about all the stuffs ur brothers do say about the east, how many are true but we are not bothered about them coz we no they aren't in the least true and so u don't see Igbos opening unnecessary threads. What this thread proves to all discerning minds is the fact that Ibadan is actually a brown roof, stinking, dirty and smelling enclave. Rubbish

this is the lie you peopel use to deceive yourselves... you people have not rebuilt your cities due to two factors

1) yorubas generally dont go home, once they find a place to work and settle there. that is the end. They neglect their home and leave it to rot.

2) you people dont go home also because of the fear of one old witch at home that will kill you or hunt your success, hence many yoruba parents dont take their children home. they visit their home town without their children hence their children dont even know all their family member(uncle, cousins anuties etc) as well as family land.

the only time you see all of them come home is to bury their granny. the funniest part of it is that most of them are usually rich and doing fine in the cities but they abandon their grannies to rot in a ratcheted house. That is why you see in many yoruba towns and cities you see old people roaming about the street and you just be wondering where they know they are going too.

but you have to give it to yorubas, their old people grow very old, i mean very old. what i don't know is whether it is the food they eat or its poverty that is making them look older than they are.

this is rashidi yekini"s mother which is a typical example of how yoruba people neglect their old ones to live in poverty..

its sad but that is the truth and if care is not taken, this attitude/ culture is been passed down to the next generation who will abandon their grannies and presently developing cities when they are old.

olodo the picture you posted is that of a open market, were you expecting them to use long span aluminum sheets of a open market. grin Afonja.

even at that, there are modern multi-storey buildings within the ogbete market picture of enugu

compare it to that of ibadan which is a residential quarters and the size also. that of ibadan will make up for three local governments in igbo land lolz.

dont forget also that housing is a yardstick to measure standard of living and poverty.

that is why some of them in their shameless defense always claim those pictures of owerri, aba, ontisha, awka, enugu and other igbo cities we post here on niaraland are GRAs in igboland. which exposes their backwardness and level of ignorance.
