9jakool:bros, this your wailing is a consolation, urbanization simply implies houses clustering together in a nucleated settlement, as against igboland with dispersed settlement, yorubaland is highly urbanized, but urbanization has nothing to do with better standard of living. zinc takes less than 30 years to rust, so your excuse about age is untenable, secondly, when zinc rusts, the right thing is to change to aluminum, when mud house becomes shaky, you demolish and built decent block house, if you can't do any of these, it is lack of wherewithal and not those flimsy excuses 2 Likes |

MXrep: Your first picture is Abeokuta, you can obviously see the entrance to Olumo rock. In your sad attempt to taint Yorubaland, you couldn't even use the right picture. You can keep showing pictures of brown roofs of the historic centers of Yoruba cities, but failed to show the development that are taking place at the same time. I can keep on showing Makoko forever and call it Lagos, but that's never going to change the underlying fact. You see brown roofs, but what I see is that over a century ago, when many Nigerians are living under thatched roof, people in cities like Abeokuta and Ibadan could afford top live in multi-storey houses. 2 Likes |

OP don't take Nairaland too seriously as so many guys here are clowns toying with people's feelings. Most Nigerians know Ibadan and the fact that the main old city is full of rusty roofed Houses and the newer parts are as beautiful as a any of the modern cities in Nigeria with even better facilities. It's all politics and calculated taunting. Every city has rusty roofs in some parts but the only difference is that Ibadan is a megacity and hence has more of everything. 3 Likes |

MXrep:No, I'm not looking for any consolation. I'm telling you reality on the ground, you are giving me cosmetic solutions. Most of the houses are older than that. I've posted the picture of Ibadan in the 1960s showing the same style of houses. Secondly, it's tin, not zinc that were used. Nigeria used to produce high amount of tin during the colonial times. Zinc actually is low in corrosion and takes longer than that to rust. Because of the easy access to tin, roofing sheets were made out of tin. Most people don't build houses out of tin anymore and global tin production has dropped dramatically. If a roof does what is supposed to do which is provide shelter, then there is no need to torn it down especially if the people occupying the space are poor. If the average Nigerian standard of living improves greatly, then we can start talking about roofs. They are not a priority right now, upgrading public infrastructure and raising the standard of living should be the focus. 1 Like |

Allann:Another consolation line, you Yorubas should be ashamed for being reputed as the brown roof republic. I was born and bred in Lagos, visited all states in the SW, visited virtually all the main towns and cities, speak Yoruba fluently and can boldly tell you that all towns and cities in the SW are same save for Lagos(Oba said it's not Yoruba anyway). You guys should leave Lagos for a minute and go change those roofs. That the yorubas had a head in education And western lifestyle doesn't translate to them leading in that department today, Ndigbo ti take over. 1 Like |

Yyeske:eh yaa another hypocrite spotted. If your region is all mansion and nice, then why come live in another region. Thank you for your analysis of the SW but Yoruba are not ashamed. You are here saying that Yorubas should leave Lagos and go to their brown roof republic, meanwhile your family migrated to the SW from a region suffering from it's own fair share of environmental issues. The SE is the most polluted part of Nigeria according to the World Health Organization and not to mention it's overpopulation and erosion problems. Next time you speak from your mouth reeking of hypocrisy, make sure your non-brown roofed region is free of pollution and erosion first. Going after brown roofs is misplaced priority. Brown roofs only look "unpleasing" meanwhile pollution causes health issues and kills. As for that insincere side comment about Lagos, you should know as a Lagos born and bred, Lagos has over 50 Yoruba kings and Akiolu is just the king of Isale Eko. Many of his words should never be taken seriously. He's the same king that said people like you should be thrown into lagoon. Today he's your enemy, tomorrow he's your friend. Make up your mind hypocrite. You ungrateful sons from the land of ajeji exploit the secular and accommodating nature of Yorubas. Centuries ago before colonization or a country like Nigeria, you people were unknown to Yorubas. Lagos is under the domains of Awori in Lagos proper, Remo in Ikorodu, and Ijebu in Lekki and Epe. It sickening to see people like you live among the same people whose interests you pray against everyday. When the time comes, awon omo onile would claim what's rightfully theirs. 4 Likes |

9jakool:Accomodating my black a.ss as if the accommodation was for free . Oba Akiolu remains the paramount Oba in Lagos. I guess the Americans, Brits, Chinese etc are all in Nigeria because Naija is the El dorado. We see opportunities anywhere and we grab it. No fault of ours Go clean up the brown roofs or better still Change it. Little wonder why you all claim to be Lagosians when we know the real indigenous Lagosians aren't up to 5% of the Yoruba population there. The Oba has spoken anyway so your opinion isn't necessary Air pollution in Third World country around the world mostly denotes rapid and unchecked industrialization as seen in China, India etc, Onitsha on that list shows how strong the economy is though the government needs to regulate 1 Like |
