michlins: those pipes really very scarce especially if you live outside of oil producing areas.
They're usually decommissioned pipes from pipelines which on its own is a risk because it has outlived its time. But that doesn't mean it will collapse. The collapse of tank stand is usually from the base. If you make mistake on the foundation,it will affect the general structure.
Another issue is the overloading of the structure. You can imagine a situation where you are meant to carry something too heavy for you Just to add, Industrial grade pipes, removed due to loss of corrosion allowance, or outright theft /vandalism will always supercede commercial grade pipes in strength and quality. Also I think they pour tar or something similar to prevent internal corrosion. |

movoco: how is that possible? I thought if an existing land has been surveyed and registered perhaps another individual goes to do the survey of that Same land he or she will be told the land have been surveyed already. Survey is just identifying the exact location and dimension of the land, nothing more, nothing less. You can have one million different surveys from different surveyors. Infact each time a piece of land is traded, it is generally recommended to ignore the old survey plan and to do a fresh one so that it can have the new owners name. However you need this survey plan to tell government that this is the actual land you are trying to register for either C-of-O or governors consent However in the absence of C-of-O or governors consent, an older registered survey plan can be used to show that one was the original owner. Then again, if you, with the newer survey prove that you also occupied the land all this while, possession now counts in your favour. |

erico2k2: This is mine bellow.I think of you gonna go this high use H beams. Ironically those pipes are generally thicker/ stronger than the H-beams. Especially when sourced from the used/scrap market. It's more of a design issue. Copy and paste is cheaper for us. If it works for my neighbour, it will work for me. |

FEGEITOK: Soon after that post as I always do, I decided to find out why do storage tanks fail.
The results I found were more attuned towards the oil industry but the lessons can be applicable to water tanks.
Yes you are right. Corrosion was the first on the list.
I am not sure those who build tanks as a general rule teach the owners of those tanks that fighting corrosion is the responsibility of the tank stand owner and not the tank stand builder.
And not being aware that one is supposed to fight corrosion is not an acceptable excuse before the law, it is rather evidence of negligence on the part of the tank stand owner. He ought to know that a tank stand is dangerous thing and need to be managed.
So the fault of the failure of tank stands in Nigeria is a fault of the owner of the tank stand in cases of corrosion and poor maintenance and maybe the fault of the builder in cases of improper construction.
There are other reasons which are included in the screenshot.
This is one reason why I try to educate myself on anything I engage a contractor on. Lest I get into trouble because I did not know what I ought to have known. This is another reason to engage engineers that don't have a bossy attitude and that don't just want money to change hands but can discuss implications with those giving them jobs. I think you are confusing steel water tank stands with steel tanks. |

erico2k2: I think I agree with the other poster, you have not directed the path of the positively charged particles of the spark, its now spread along tyhe top part of the edge of the entire building. Take not that edge has metal inside and concrete is not in 100% an insulator. PS. You are better off insulating the base of the arrestor with tape or use patch from a cut tyre Today is my "don't look the other way" day. It seems this lightning arrestor was not bonded with the general earthing of the building. The grounding was also done close to the building. If that proves to be the case, then... Actually the house becomes a time-bomb for any sensitive electronics that may be installed without a surge protector between such device and the wall outlet power socket. During a strike, there is increased heating and resistance on the cable so that the tail end of the lightening starts looking for another path to ground. If it sees another separate path to ground, it will arc across |

FEGEITOK: Everyone that has a tank stand and everyone who lives close to one needs to be aware that this is a potential consequence of owing one or being close to one and should take action to be sure they are not living close to a ticking time bomb
I recall posting how it destroyed a school next door and killed some unfortunate kids in the south east of Nigeria
Everyone building one or hiring one should also be aware of the legal consequences if something you put up results in someone's death
it is not about how cheap you can build it, it is about how well you can build it
So don't hire just about anyone to do it There is this culture of maintenance that we generally don't like. All steel structures are meant to be inspected and certified periodically based on use (criticality) and environment. Lagos is surrounded by salt water, resulting in I creased rate of corrosion. All heavy duty steel structures should be inspected bi-anually, followed by painting or any other corrosion mitigation strategy Alot of these failures are corrosion induced while very few are foundation related |

Born2conquer: Yes, they merely dropped the Survey number.
And the person we got the land from has been in possession of the land for as long as 20years. Even bought the land twice Didn't they tell you it's a dog-eat-dog world? LOL Welcome to Nigeria! There is a very high probability they just want to scare you into offering them a settlement especially as the previous owner did same (recall you claimed he bought it twice). Survey plan is only a means of identification of the LOCATION of a said piece of land. It is not and will never be proof of ownership. That said, you can pay someone to help you check if the survey was actually registered. Going to court is usually the last option as they may get an interim injunction freezing your business and this is usually their ace |

debeey87: On choice of plaster sand.
Bricklayers have told me some sand have more gum than others hence they advocate for the ones with gum for plastering. It appears price vary for each type as well from suppliers.
There's also the notion about white and not so white plaster sand.
My question border around what disadvantage is there with using sand without enough gum and can cement which is a bonding agent resolve whatever bonding issue the gum was meant to take care of. Can this also results in cracks on the wall(which were not present prior to plastering).
I'll appreciate contributions from the members. Thank you Am not qualified to answer, but since none has responded, let me try my best. Basically plaster sand is just choice between sand, clay/silt, or a varying mixture of both. The pure sand gives a harsh texture, which should normally require wall screeding before paint is applied. It also requireds plenty cement and or bonding agent. But the sand does not shrink or expand, hence it doesn't result in any cracks. The pure clay/silt gives a smooth finish as if the wall hath already been screeded. Requires little or no cement / bonding agent. But clay swells when moist and shrinks when dry resulting in ugly mud cracks. Basically they use a varying mix of both to achieve the positives of both worlds. The mixing can be done on site by the artisans or naturally in the river where the sand was dredged. The further upstream of the river, and the more coarse sand aggregates, while the further down the river, the more finer and more clay content The gum is his way of understanding clay's sticky properties. Recall they don't use cement in clay pots, bricks and tiles but just clay stickiness is enough Hope this helps. |

jelloh: I'm in the process of working with my architect to design a simple 4 bedroom bungalow and I need the inputs of the esteemed members of this community. I want to have an open plan living area that combines the living and dining rooms and the kitchen, and I don't want there to be any pillars. This living area will be 32ft long by 28ft wide
My architect is insisting that there must be at least one row of pillars in the middle as well as along the perimeter walls to make up for the reduced walls. I'm fine with pillars in the perimeter walls since they will be hidden but I don't want any pillars in my living room. So what are the most structurally sound and economical options?
So far we have these choices 1. Use thicker roof joists and have a normal wood frame roof 2. Use concrete beams to span the width of the house and mount a normal wood frame roof 3. Use a steel frame roof
Please can you advise me on the best option and what dimensions to use. Thanks a lot in advance. Below is the sketch I gave my architect Option 1: Sages over time with aging. Water damage from leaking roof accelerates this. But still takes decades to notice Option 2: When done correctly with sufficient stirrups, is the best. Option 3: Very popular with places of worship and event centers. But requires routine inspection and painting for corrosion management |

Definitely Low Voltage problem! Try read the public/utility power supply voltage. You can always check if any of your household appliances come with a voltage indicator eg: stabilisers, surge protectors aka AC/TV Guard etc I normally read mine from the generator House automatic changeover (ATS) which came with a voltage display. |

No African lifestyle channel.

With my 4.2m dish, I watch all sports that DSTV, Startimes, Canal Sports, TSTV pit together doesn't show. But I can't watch local channels except I use Nigcomsat FTA.

Abuazeez: 95% of hotels uses RF to distribute signals to tvs, it's more cheaper compare to using HDMI splitter. The quality of image still depends on the installer. I do all my signal distribution with RF. I think they mostly use HDMI over cat5 extenders while a few use proprietary IPTV combine ( like NETUP IPTV Solutions) Except of course you meant the 1-star and below hotels. Point is that there are ready made solutions, but they are all out of budget range. So am looking for cheaper modern solutions |
