Of course,if our medical schools were up to scratch,we won't be even having this debate. If American doctors start receiving their medical education in Nigeria, they too will struggle.
1. This is not the fault of the Nigerian doctor. You can only make so much silk out of a sow's ear.

2. The quality of Nigerian doctors is not the reason the north is afraid of taking vaccines to kick out polio.

@4 Him

About our doctors being almost or just as good as US doctors, that is far from the case.I would rather have a doctor who was trained at King's College London than one trained at UNTH.

Forget the hubristic nonsense Nigerians love spouting, the fact remains that we have a poor standard of education that produces poor quality graduates in all fields, including medicine.

From my brother's experience(he studied at the above 2 institutions) and that of his colleagues,Nigerian doctors are way behind in expertise compared to their foreign counterparts. Its not so much the nationality of the doctor but where he was trained.
No where have i said that the standard of education is on par between both nations. I can attest to that myself having had the benefit of schooling on both sides.
However is this the fault of the average nigerian doctor? He can only work with what he has, dont expect to get gold dust from the sahara.

Kobojunkie:
As for US doctors being the 3rd largest cause of mortality in the US,relative to what? That stat tells us nothing in itself.Lets put it this way,if all the doctors in the US are replaced with doctors from Nigeria, mortality attributable to doctors will skyrocket.
I referenced the stat to bring out a point, that even with all the technological advantage of the foreign doctor, he is not immune to human error, the same yardstick by which the Nigerian doctor is openly vilified by the ignorant.

Uche2nna:
I honestly don't care about their fear or the basis for their fear of the sources of the vaccines. I am more concerned with the statistics that show the numbers of kids with polio in the north. I acknowleged that they have a right to be suspicious about the source of the vaccines (based on facts that I have read about) but not to be stupid, dumb and downright insensitive. To reject vaccines from the western world is not heinous but what I find shocking is the lack of a veritable alternative. You can't just say NO to vaccines and sit back and watch your kids get deformed. You have to find different sources for your vaccines. That is where the angle of illiteracy comes in and I wont argue with that.

And yeah, the South have been using same vaccine and polio has almost been eradicated with little or no complications from the Vaccines themselves or the manner at which the vaccine was adminstered. So what is actually their problem? undecided
kobo will be back to talk about "fears" again
PoliticsRe: Polio Cases Double In Nigeria by 4Him1(m): 11:21pm On Apr 25, 2008
Kobojunkie:
Please don’t play that silly card. It is not according to what you think of it. Fact remains that Katsina has a healthcare system, and it is not up to you to decide whether it does or it does not.
silly. I have lived in the north before and my own brother lived in Katsina state. I'm not just saying what i google up like some of you. We all know where northern top shots go when they need medical care . . . national hospital Abuja, Lagos and then abroad.

Kobojunkie:
Fact is this is what the people have to work with.
they shld do better for themselves then instead of crying about "irrational fears".

Kobojunkie:
Second fact is there is fear and it is based on their interpretation of what is rational and what is not. Not what DAVID thinks is rational or not rational.
dude, do you even understand what you are typing? We are not talking theory here but what is on ground. If this same vaccine has been used to eradicate polio in the south what is the fear of the north?

Kobojunkie:
I still remain that AlmondJoy has a point whether you acknowledge it or not. Fear exists.
Neither of you has been able to rationally define what this "fear" is all about.

Kobojunkie:
Not all Nigerians are as strong as you are. Heck I am not, after losing 3 relatives between April of last year and January of this year, I am terrified. The thought of walking into a doctor’s office or even LUTH in Nigeria to get medical care terrifies me. You might be strong and a better Nigerian than I am, that is your case and your potato but for me, I am afraid and I understand when people choose to rationalize their fears.
more cock and bull tales. Doctors in the US are the 3rd leading cause of death yearly, are you still afraid of walking into your GPs office?

hypocrites.

Maybe you can now simmer down and READ my posts without trying to inject anything into them. I have been clear from beginning that this is not about anything else but about the fact that the Health system is not as good as it may be for all and so these people's fears, even if they be Irrational to you, is real to them.
the problem is you really dont understand what you are arguing about.
1. Are these northerners REALLY worried about the health care system? No because the north has NO functioning healthcare system of its own and is at the bottom of every medical health indices in Nigeria.
2. Is there "fear" based on any rational reason? NO because this same vaccines are used routinely on southern children, while northern Nigeria remains the reservoir of polio the world over, polio has been virtually eradicated in the south.

So what really is the FEAR you keep yapping about?

Kobojunkie:
And to what you said earlier about HEALTH in Nigeria. Here,  http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/blogs/paging.dr.gupta/2007/01/doctor-salisus-hospital.html . The polio problem happens to exist in a state with fairly, if not good health care. Some in here would even go ahead and tell you that it is one of the best in the country and the situation still exists.
Katsina general hospital?  shocked

Katsina is a state with good health care? When last did you visit Nigeria?

Question 2: What hypocrisyhuh
Read your own post: Do you think I will readily submit knowing what I know of what became of 3 members of my family in the hands of Nigerian doctorshuh One of them was actually a doctor who was admitted to LUTH and that case went to hell in a handbasket due to doctors misdiagnosing him. Do you really think everyone has the same mind as you do and would fight the way you would when it comes to all issues?? Do you think my fear is unfoundedhuh

My response: Are you also afraid and would you readily submit to American doctors knowing that they are the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA?

Kobojunkie:
Question 1. What has medical misdiagnosis in the US to do with this debatehuh
it exposes the hypocrisy in YOUR argument.
You started by telling us the medical system in Nigeria is incompetent because you lost 3 family members to medical misdiagnosis, just pointing out to you that such also occurs in the US and shld thus not be the barometer by which our health care system is measured.
PoliticsRe: Polio Cases Double In Nigeria by 4Him1(m): 10:31pm On Apr 25, 2008
Kobojunkie:
As much as we want to argue that these people are illiterate and so should be abandoned or forced, whichever you decide, fact remains, there is fear that is stopping them from vaccinating their kids and until the Health system improves nationwide or enough to help minimize the fear, there might be even more cases to come. Remember, this is not about YOu and what YOU know of vaccines and the lot but about what the fears these people have come to know or accept as their reality and so they will need to deal with and if government is willing, will help.
you like dribbling in circles.
To start with, the north has absolutely NOTHING in terms of a health system which is largely maintained by the south.
Virtually ALL the most important teaching hospitals are in the south, why shld the north start demanding improvement in the healthcare system?
Why dont they start by going to school instead of tending cattle 24/7?

What fears do these illiterates have? Polio was completely eradicated in the south, where southern children being vaccinated by aliens?

it is an irrational fear with no basis.

Harold Shipman was British not Nigerian.

So when are you going to start being afraid of American and British medicine?

Kobojunkie:
In less than a year, I happen to have lost 3 relatives to Nigerian medicine. Do you think I will readily submit knowing what I know of what became of 3 members of my family in the hands of Nigerian doctorshuh One of them was actually a doctor who was admitted to LUTH and that case went to hell in a basket due to misdiagnosis.

Fact remains, that in reality there are exceptions to the rule and my case or anyone else's case could be one of them, jeezz!!! Back to the point now,
you're over-reacting. Almondjoy had NO point at all . . . polio cases have doubled in Nigeria because northern religious sycophants would rather their kids are crippled beggars than take vaccines that kids in the south take.
No polio case has been reported among southern Nigerians for a couple of yrs now . . . are those children being vaccinated in Germany?

I remember when health inspectors came to my street in Lagos including my church during the nationwide polio vaccination campaign. Children were vaccinated and I don't see anyone dying from the injections. So all this hype about being suspicious about vaccines in Nigeria do not hold any basis with me. Nigerian doctors are not dumb.
Allow me to start by acknowledging this post.

Kobojunkie:
I am not talking of your grandmother, I am speaking for self here. If you took time to actually understand my post, you would see that it is not about anyone else but for my case. Trying to make my argument a case for all is not going to work at all. We do not all have the same privileges, even though we are all Nigerians and humans(tack on more to the list if you will). In my case, I have alternatives, whether it be typhoid or not, it does not matter.

Actually, Yaradua is a good example, he actually shows how different privileges we all have and there are many rich people in that country who jet off to foreign countries, even neighbouring cameroun or ghana for healthcare instead of having a doctor in Nigeria there for themselves. I am guessing an emergency came up and the man immediately decided to jet out to germany to get himself treated. We can list so many hypotheticals but fact remains that not all cases are the same.
Kobo, if i were living in Nigeria and didnt have the means to live in the same country as you were i'd be full of resentment reading this entry of yours. It drips with arrogance, ignorance and the same mentality that continues to ensure that the gap between rich and poor will never be bridged.

Sorry bro, someone asked a very pertinent question . . . you were born in Nigeria, why didnt you go to America to take your vaccinations?
All the time you had cough as a kid, did you import your own medicine?

American doctors are not miracle workers, they are lucky to live in a country where surgery by the use of computers is now a possibility. Nigerian doctors would so have loved to work with the tools ur doctors here use but sadly since they cant use their salaries to buy equipment they will have to make do with what they have.

You make noise about American medicine, did you know that Tylenol is no different from panadol?
Did you know that extra-strength tylenol is simply the same as panadol-extra?
Did you know that drugs like celebrex nearly came off the market for severe side-effects? Just to let you know the drug was not made in Nigeria.

Chairman, you can make all the noise you want now because you have the "unearned" priviledge of living in the USA. Spare a thot for ur brothers back home who will continue to be at the mercy of Nigerian doctors who fight against all odds to make life worth living.
Nigeria is not America, but our life expectancy is no different.

No, knowing what I know today, I am have options. Being stuck in Nigeria is not necessarily reason for me to submit if I do not want to. That is what I am saying. Even
YarAdua who may not even have the same advantage that I do, is not stuck with Nigeria.
What options do you have? If you were stuck in Lagos and you had typhoid fever would you rather let the disease run its course and kill you than take antibiotics (that would be filled with chalk anyway according to you)?

Yar Adua is not a good example here, he has a diplomatic passport that guarantees him entry to any country of his choice for medical attention. I am talking of the likes of my grandmother who has never seen a passport before in her life . . . what should she do if she also adopts the "anything Nigerian is fake" attitude?

Sure but knowing what I know today, would I really submit to be vaccinated in Nigeria?? I have watched tons of Nigerian movies, enough to scare the bejesus out of me when I think of a Nigerian doctor or nurse trying to stick a needle in me. Scary stuff men!!! Scary stuff !!!, LMAO!!!!
Nonsense! My mum is a medical doctor (28yrs running) so i know a bit about medicine in the Nigerian context.
The major difference between the Nigerian and American doctor is the lack of cutting edge facilities that are just not available in Nigeria, doctors back home are doing their utmost to preserve lives with whatever little equipment they have.

Like Uche2nna said, virtually everyone born in Nigeria were vaccinated there . . . has there been A SINGLE case of vaccines not being effective?

Most of the negative comments about Nigerian doctors and nurses come from those who are largely ignorant.
You say u're scared about getting an injection from a Nigerian doctor, dear . . . there are widely reported cases of American doctors forgetting scissors in the abdomen of patients, we have reports of doctors who kill patients, we have reports of fake doctors who end up doing more damage than the patient came in for, we have seen patients who go yrs with misdiagnosed ailments . . . bro . . . when will you be scared of American doctors too . . .

or are you people jujst one of the many "if it says American then it must automatically be better than anything Nigerian"?

When it comes to injections i'd trust my mother 150% more than any doctor, white, green, blue, american or indian.
