PhonesRe: Infinix Hot Note X551 – Jim’s BIG Thing by 4llerbuntu(m):
i've been reading the complaints about RAM on this thread with amusement and concern.

android OS does not work like Windows or any other OS you know

on Android, FREE RAM IS WASTED RAM

So long as our phone is not locking up from lack of resources, its working exactly as it is intended. The OOM (out of memory) settings are not as aggressive as they could be because the apps don't have the same behaviour as on earlier versions of android.

If you change the OOM settings, it will simply drain your battery faster as your apps/services will keep being killed and restarted in the background. This is the same error that using task-killers commit which result in battery drain.

The OS manages itself efficiently and will shutdown some apps for the ones in the foreground if it needs RAM.

i'm do not even understand why you constantly check how much free RAM you have. NL emergency geeks have taught you guys rubbish.

I REPEAT: FREE RAM, IS WASTED RAM. of what use is the free ram? This is not windows. Your stuff are cached in RAM for speed.

http://www.androidcentral.com/ram-what-it-how-its-used-and-why-you-shouldnt-care

This misconception has been going on for years anyway.

Is your phone struggling for performance because of RAM or you just keep checking for free RAM and freaking out? i've seen the latest Lollipop on this device and it runs just fine!

meanwhile this picture is from a review unit of Tecno's latest i saw on a blog. Stock rom with no user installed apps, see how much ram is used out of 3 GB? ....... Thats the way lollipop is designed to run

PhonesRe: 10 Common Misconceptions About Smartphone Batteries by 4llerbuntu(m): 11:31am On Sep 11, 2015
Did you notice the discrepancy between your post 1 and 6? smiley

talktimi:
1: Batteries have "memory"
Nope. Not at all. People used to think that you had to "train" your battery to make sure it would take the most charge. To do that, people would drain it regularly and charge it — and they'd never plug it in when it was over 50%. The thought was that over time, the battery would develop a memory and allow for just a percentage of the charge. This is not true. If your battery is at 80%, top that baby off. Frequent charges will do no damage to your battery.

6: You should always charge your phone to full before first using it
Many people think that the first thing they should do with a new smartphone is plug it in and charge it to 100%. This is simply a myth. Remember, smartphone batteries work best between 40% to 80%, and since most phones ship at half capacity, you should be good to go out of the box. As a side note: If you fire up your new smartphone for the first time and the battery is below 40%, you might want to consider taking it back because that battery could be very old.
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/10-things/10-common-misconceptions-about-mobile-device-batteries/
talktimi:
8: Using the internet will run down the battery faster than anything else
Not true.* The single most draining thing you can do on your smartphone is gaming. The graphics engines are massive energy drainers. If you game a lot on your devices, dim the screen as much as you can while playing (if you want to extend your battery life). But if you can play that game while charging, go ahead and keep that screen at full brightness.
* This also depends upon what you are using the internet for. If you're viewing videos through YouTube, online gaming, or doing other graphics-intensive activities, it will drain your battery faster.
In practical everyday scenarios, this isn't true. Switching off data will give you at least 3 extra hours of battery life, especially in Nigeria where network service is spotty and usually leads to over working the phone radios trying to keep a signal.

even better, merely restricting your phone to 2G will boost your battery life immensely

Actually, the biggest drains of battery is the Screen and the network radios. Check your device for proof. So its really not *gaming*
so long as that screen is on, its consuming the battery. Considering that using the phone requires lighting up the screen..........

When the screen is off, the next culprit is the network radio, so yes the Internet IS a big source of battery drain especially when Signal is weak. Its a fact that 3G consumes better than 2G

So you are so afraid for whatever rubbish brand you are doing marketing for that you have to spread FUD about a manufacturer that has not even landed in Nigeria? grin grin grin grin grin grin

Na wah

So why did you neglect to also post that the ban had been lifted in India on some devices?

why did you neglect to point out the ban was not for quality but for PATENT matters? whose PATENT are they going to infringe in Nigeria? yours?

So you also mean a simple internet search cannot show you the status of whatever phone they bring? So Iphone 5s, Iphone 6 is also outdated abi u don't know?

You think Nigerians are so stupid as not to be able to choose which device they want to buy?

I blame the person paying you to post rubbish.

This is worth a share.

Someone asked me a question this morning about login into a mikrotik router on a raspberry Pi that didn't have a browser.

Took me a while to figure out his question as I thought he merely wanted to connect into the WiFi network,. He actually needed to login into the network after using IwConfig to join.

So I remembered the small utility called w3m.

Yeah u can browse in a terminal. It does http 1.0
Funny how I never used to remember this. U Really need to save data and just want to read text, why not...

It's why we use Linux. It's why we chose freedom

Run sudo apt-get install w3m w3m-img

To open a webpage just run 'w3m url'

E. G w3m Nairaland.Com

Cheers

I'm sure newbies are also aware you can download in terminal without any app?

Wget DownloadLink

It supports resumable links too. Most download apps in Linux are actually just front end to Wget

I think you should give steps on how to restore Stock NVRAM for the benefit of those who don't know how.
That will be a bit difficult, seeing that i currently don't own a MTK device.

but its straightforward. a google search will set u straight. most likely there's a thread on NL for it too

2. MtkDroid Tools
3. MTK and ADB drivers
4 A Quality USB cable

@enoch and other Hot Note folks

i solved the 3G bug on the MIUI Rom (bottom power compelled me to do it wink )
Replace your Build.prop with the one i attached and restore your STOCK NVRAM. That made it come up. i changed just 2 lines in the build.prop, but i think the main thing is the NVRAM.

(the clue for me was that though i wiped the device, when i flashed the MIUI rom the IMEI was intact. Thats not normal for MTK devices, it usually becomes 'invalid'..............

also the stock build.prop has

ro.gemini.smart_sim_switch=false
ro.gemini.smart_3g_switch=0
bgw.current3gband=0
i changed those to

ro.gemini.smart_sim_switch=true
ro.gemini.smart_3g_switch=1
bgw.current3gband=1
if you didn't back up your NVRAM, guess u going to have to find it somehow
No screenshots as the owner has carried her phone/wahala away grin grin
i'm guessing this may be useful for other ports and devices, which is why i'm sharing
