This is CLEARLY an "Internal Temperature Sensor" problem !

That's the Knob/Adjustment which lets you set what temperature you want.
It is bad, or, [there is a unreliable connection from it to the Compressor.

One way to check this out is...

When it's not working, use a Jumper, to provide the Compressor with Voltage.
If it starts getting cool air being blown, then you have ID'd the problem positively.

which of the 2?

the sensor or the control knob?

how do you isolate either of these 2 issues conclusively?

especially the sensor

Nothing like recommended mileage.

matter of fact, that a car has high mileage is testament to the fact it was well taken care of and maintained.

there's cars made in the 1950's still working ......

HOWEVER,

what high mileage means in a car is that its served a lot, and therefore you will need to need to change parts intermittently. car parts have a certain expiry date.

for instance high mileage means engine has worked a lot BUT you cannot compare the work a car engine does on free roads when it has the chance to breathe with the work in very high traffic.

that's why cars driven in Lagos traffic work much harder than cars driven on expressway. on free roads when you can floor your accelerator your engine will use like half the fuel it uses in Lekki or 3rd Mb traffic where you go dey match brake and accelerator every 30 seconds.

So when buying any car, even tokunboh you need to look at the history.

if the car is in good shape, has single owner, has verifiable service history (which you will see in comprehensive VIN reports), using proper Oils and parts and was driven in a place where there's hardly traffic or bad roads, the mileage nor matter. such a car will be even be better than a 60k mileage car bought brand new and driven in Lagos.

e.g i bought a single owner vehicle with proper service history (serviced by dealer,non accidented etc.) it had 200k miles (which is HUGE)
funny thing is, 97% of the parts on that vehicle are from the factory.

The engine is just fine, bar leaking hoses.

only issue i had in the first 2 months was that they had stolen the Catalyst in Nigeria and it was showing catalyst code, and the headliner was showing signs of age.

everything else i repaired on it was caused by me. E.g Changed the rear shocks after i took it to Badagry Expressway and ran into giant pothole at 80Km per hour. The bolts on those things had to be cut because they were stiff from age.

so yes, look for lower mileage, but thats not the koko. car can have 10k mileage and be dead.

PS: 99.9999% of the cars sold in Nigeria have tampered mileage. they reduce it to entice people who think Mileage is everything.

Very well said. Anyway i dont care about the maintenance costs. As long as the car was in good condition when it was bought. The maintenance must be done. My primary concern is performance and the reliability of the engine.

But are you saying one can not buy an 18 year old car and drive for at least 3 to 4 months. Or even longer. without repairing something

if you don't care about the maintenance cost then buy any. The Benz would be a great option especially if it is in good condition.

As for the bolded..... highly unlikely if you'll be driving it a lot, especially because of bad roads, bad fuel, and stop and go traffic.

May not be major stuff though. a leaking hose here, blocked radiator there, some random sensor failing or small engine part failing, A/C misbehaving. The age and mileage makes it inevitable.

But experiences differ sha. Some people get luck with cars.

A car in this range would be at least 14 - 20 years old.

'put fuel and top oil' is highly unlikely.

You will spend money regularly to keep it moving.

Even where it has been single owner or well maintained, some parts will regularly develop issues, e.g the suspension parts. especially if they've not been changed or worked on in the past.

What you should bother yourself with is the pricing for the parts and ease of repair for such vehicles.

That's why your list is looking funny. BMW, Benz, Audi should not be on your list if you don't have money to spend. those kain motor fit cough lasan and you are looking at 300k bill.

I don't know how well Infiniti cars age.... but if you are buying it Nigerian used, consider the fact that because they are expensive to maintain, the owner would have overlooked some stuff to save his pocket occasionally.

The RX ages well, but RX300 is about 18 years old now....... and there's 'Toyota Tax' to consider. Original parts no cheap o

Last last, choose the one you want and be prepared to take what you get. na luck

and its always unhelpful to give the car to a mech to fix and have them guess what the true mileage is.

for instance i once asked for timing belt replacement and i had to start explaining that the Manufacturer recommends replacement at certain intervals, whilst the vehicle has easily x3 that mileage as real mileage with no records that it had been changed

then there's this hose just behind the radiator (i think it goes to the turbo) in my vehicle looks dodgy, melted surface and all that, though it doesn't appear to be leaking.

is that the same with you guys? and should i think about changing it?
