I told him to not panic that I will send him money to come to my house. He is very close to me. My plan is to lecture him, and tell him to double his hustle by opening an additional area of garden to raise money for his treatment. I dont mind supporting him financially. I know he will surely do it because he knew what he went through. He has to be taking to a specialist and nutritionist who will assist him. I'm sure his monthly expenses will run to N50,000 monthly on food and supplements till he is able to eradicate all. And the funny issue is that he will never want to stop living such good life back to eating junks. It's good to take care of ourselves.

I don't have the mind to adopt such things when I saw the negative effect.

What they claim is that fermentation kills bad pathogens but leaves good ones. Says who? When you collect what you don't know about, how can you tell fermentation kills them? I laugh in Swahili. If people want to learn and improve, the first step is unity. It's like the broom illustration. Very easy to break a piece of palm frond. A weak granny even break it into pieces, and a tiny piece end up as a tool used to remove meat from her teeth. But no one, even iron Myke Tyson can break unification of palm fronds called broom. If I decide to return to write anything on gardening, it will be non-profitable gardening, and will be 100% organic so I can have peace of mind to express myself. For the sake of other readers, I will address this.

Almost all the successful vegetable farmers I have met don't rely on rain. I don't rely on it too. As a matter of fact, I protect my vegetables from rain. That's all I have to tell you. Modern farmers protect their leaves from water splashes.

Instead of 9 acres, 9 plots system is a good start if you are determined to use the style you said you read about.

You have given me very little info. Anyway check the following.

1. Cultivar. If you can let me know, perhaps I can help.

2. Effect of rain. How is rain in your area? This is one of the many reasons only experienced farmers can cultivate tomato during rainy season. Even experienced commercial farms avoid it. So, it is the reason it is absolutely counter productive to produce tomato using rain. I pity new farmers who want to cut cost and feel rainy season is the best time to produce so they can avoid setting up irrigation. I don't even listen or try to troubleshoot with any farmer who insists on using rain to feed his crops. Such farmer is stubborn and will definitely be poor for the rest of his life. It is the simple truth. Same applies to many other veggies. Any farmer who keeps forcing rain fed system can never be succesful. Never. I mean never. And I don't want to associate with such farmer. Not for anything. I don't even listen to him. In fact, I always mock him. lol. And I have a strong hatred for stubborn people. Lol. I am known for that. I just hate it. No irrigation, quit farming. I am not the right person to consult if there is no irrigation for vegetable. Of course if the farmer can carry watery cans on 15 plots, no problem..I will listen to the person. I am just sure he will need to borrow additional money to the profit he will make so he can enrich doctors' pocket after. I don't argue with farmers who want to do it. Experience is a very good teacher. I have lost count of people who visited hospitals after cucumber cultivation, and they are so many reading this post. Lol. They are just silent and "use am rub bodi". Of course, anytime they read the act of carrying hose on many plots of land they don't talk too. They just want to laugh at the end of the day too. You know when someone is burnt, and on his way out, he met another ignorant fellow waiting to go inside where he got burnt. He might just smile at the person, knowing fully well that the person's ears were as blocked as his when he wanted to enter, he would even smile like nothing nothing had burnt him. Then, he would go far a bit, leaped at his feet and watched the reaction of the person when coming out. Of course, he realised there was someone who laughed at him when he was coming out. So, the cycle continues.

My brother, avoid rainy season period as a new farmer, or protect your crops from heavy rainfall. Please, take to correction so you don't waste your time on field. If you are a new comer, go for greenhouse and pick high profitable crop if you are desperate to produce during rainy season. Farm with ease during rainy season. You may try to protect some of your tomato plants against rainfall if you cannot cover all, and make comparison.

3. Nutrition - I don't know about your nutritional management program is. But it has to be solid. Nutrients that improve flowering condition must be at optimum level. Also, Specific Enzymes and Amino Acids strengthen plants, and discourage flower and fruit abortion. I feel what happened was that rain has stressed your plants, and has washed away nutrients from your soil. I realise that many farmers ignorantly depend on some seaweed or other foliar spray. And this habit disgusts me. Marketers are evil. Very evil people. How can just spraying some liquid be sufficient for heavy feeders? Feed more via root. Learn optimum nutrient management. May be a wise decision to quickly feed them well with granules NPK, Ca, Mg via roots, and micro nutrients via leaves.

3. Diseases. Attaching a picture could have been helpful. Since there is none, you may want to check tomato diseases, and use the recommended treatment.

One issue is that I really don't like giving robotic instructions. It is better you understand the concept, and then formulate a system which works for you. Generally speaking, this/these is/are the reason(s) your flowers are aborting.

Cucumber can definitely be planted during raining season, and when I was still into slicing cucumber production, my target was rainy season. It is the best time since one leverages on rain to keep cost of production lower, but you don't depend on it. As for disease management, there is a method for it. Cu999, Murano, Darina, Greengo, etc are very easy to maintain since they can tackle Downey Mildew to some reasonable extent. Mildew had shown me "pepper" too before I sat down and developed an excellent program for it. Infact, there are guys whose cucumbers' leaves are without yellow spot presently. I even commissioned an ex worker to manage Akito variety for me presently. Akito has no resistance at all to any mildew. In fact, Monalisa is tougher than it, yet less than 5% mildew infection is in the farm. I have shown some nairalanders the secret behind it, but I am sorry, I can never release it until I am very sure of the person I am dealing with. It is intensive spraying formula with special method. And any unguarded tongue, indisciplined person isn't welcome into my fold. That's the truth. I treat chemicals and infectious materials with extreme carefulness. In fact, I am a winter lover because of my sensitive skin, therefore, I hate "too much chemical".

Having said the above, I don't want you to misquote me. My concept is that every farmer must provide underground irrigation (only experienced farmers might want to use overhead). If you can irrigate okra, you should be able to irrigate cucumber too. The only challenge in cucumber is tackling fungi. Okra on the other hand is notoriously known for pests issues. Anyway, I don't notice it again because I have my way around it. Yet, people spray terrible pesticides. I have stopped eating okra, cabbage, cauliflower, and brocolli because of heavy chemical spray. Cucumber, tomato, watermelon are also heavily sprayed with chemicals too, but that of cabbage, cauliflower, brocolli, and okra is craz.ily too much. If you see how farmers just keep spraying chemicals on these plants like water, you will be alarmed too. Even like a day to harvest, they are still spraying. I always pass by them in market no matter how fresh they are. Consumers are trying sir. As soon as I see cabbage farms these days, I just raise my hands in the air praising the owner of such farms for well done activities in killing consumers.

If you learn the secret of sensible Integrated Pest Management, you will be a good farmer. It is not bombarding the plants with chemicals everytime. Though, there are periods I bombard too, especially when harvest is very far away, there is a serious infection, and I am sure the chemicals are going to get washed away before picking. Then, I always consider pests ability to develop resistant to what I use.

I keep saying it, anyone who wants to have rest of mind should just get into covered production. If it's bamboo you can use to build yours, do it, but make sure wind will not pull it down during rainy season.

You may consider using PET bottles as improvised drip irrigation. Google it. I have seen a determined individual who used it in 3 plots of land. And it was so successful. After making his cash, the guy bought himself a good drip. He also said, he was torn apart with the venture, but he made it.

I want you to learn concepts, and not jump about from one plant to the other like many people on nairaland. When one person is doing cucumber, they do it. He jumps to okra, they follow. Life is not like that. Have your own mind. Oh! I am not saying okra is a bad option. Go to market and check prices to know what to grow. After, get started with pilots to learn.
