for me its every body o,no matter how gentle. This year i only did my hair twice and it was out of necessity. So i can understand some children are like that too. My only anger is when parents refuse to realize their child is very sensitive to making hair and still let it continue.

Lol your own must be bad tongue at least you can empathise with all the little princesses out there.

Yes, I think that's more of a wider cultural point about the way we see things. Parents are sometimes unable to engage with a child's individual quirks because they think it means they must be "spoiling" them.

Its the same reason parents indiscriminately beat their children when some kids respond better to a stern warning or explanation than flogging.

This is a big problem in our community. Since the natural hair movement started there has been backlash because people can be very inconsiderate.

I'm natural too but I try not to preach to people because it's a complex issue and everybodys experience has been different.

I totally agree with you , everyone’s discovering themselves differently .

Depends on the style, any style that touches the edges is a NOO! Sadly, that is the type they always make these kids.

Very mature hair styles! Gosh! I hate it ehn.

Anyway, I get doitforyou's argument. A Nigerian mother has a very tight schedule, you don't wanna add daily styling from an uncooperative kid to it. When I have my baby girl (who would definitely look like me) - I will be making her that fulani hairstyle. The one that starts from the center and falls round the head. E no go pass 10, we would count it grin

poco, you think that one is "painless" abi? Obviously not

With her natural hair, well-oiled, combed and packed nicely into buns or tails, she'll still be the beautiful princess you gave birth to

Fully agree with your post. However, even these buns will need daily combing... which isn't exactly pain-free. Better than the headache-inducing braids, etc. but ideally short cut would be best, then only daily ude and a small comb needed.

Its that bad,lol ,me and my tender scalp.

The bottom line is mothers should know the temperament level of their kids. I have seen mothers say "that is how she always cries when making her hair" well may that child is probably like me with tender scalp. Cut it off simple.

lemme ask you, did the mother of this child just comb and park this child's hair till it got to this length? And that hair base looks treated

Who is talking about hard? We are talking about the process, making buns is stressful for natural kids hair, the process of combing tough hair, to tie the hair into two buns will also be a lot of pain for the kid, talk more of doing it everyday, so what is the difference with braids? Or dont you see how tight the edges is? Won't the child feel discomfort and pains at first? What has braiding got to do with having a chance in life undecided

As long as you are not the parent, it's not your business. Sorry.

If you applied the sense you claim to have, you would know what is considered unnecessary pain is completely subjective.

How does the comment relate to killing a child? What does that have to do with the point made? undecided

Erm... I think it's everyone's business to decide whether it's OK to inflict pain on a child for some reason.
Permit me some examples:

Some individuals pointed out that painfully scarring a child's face with identification marks was not the best thing. Most people thought it was OK at some point in the past, but it's people like the OP who can cause change. Same with twins being left to die in the forest.

As society we still cause boys pain when we circumcise... but society feels the benefits (easier cleaning, apart from the religious reasons) still outweighs the temporary discomfort that most boys don't even remember. However, female genital mutilation is being seen as a bad thing (which I agree).

People used to think nothing of beating a child with plank because of "spare the rod, spoil the child...", yet we are gradually understanding that there are better ways to discipline a child, and the only thing you teach a child by beating is that violence is an OK way to solve problems.

I'm reaching, and going to extremes to prove a point, but please don't think I'm equating facial scarification with braiding hair in terms of permanence, damage, pain, etc, or equating death of twins with circumcision. Just don't lose my message that it's the voice of people like OP that can cause people to rethink why we do things, and change if we feel that the ends do not justify the means.

Lol what? It's cold weather that damages hair the most.

People here have short hair because of styles and techniques that damage their hair and bad maintenance.

That's not to talk of nutrition. How will the hair grow on insufficient nutrients or bad diet?

It's not a "woman's" topic. Anybody interested can have a say, don't talk out of ignorance.

It's good to see a man interested in the grooming habits of his daughter and plus that guy is a hairdresser

She should never go throw any pain at all until she's old enough to decide that she wants to do it.

And by old enough, I mean 18.

Your comments all over the thread are about maintenance. While maintaining buns and tails can be hard sometimes, it's better to use all that money you'll spend on attachments and paying hairdressers to buy good conditioners and Shea butter that will soften the stubbornest hair types, so it can combed easily. I have a friend who styles her two daughters' buns in less than ten minutes.

Even cornrows and simple Bob Marley can be done without pulling the girl so much.

There's no excuse for causing a little girl any pain. No excuse at all.

Aunty. Schools in naija pick weaving hair styles for kids. Pack bun to school and they will speak grammar for you. We all went thru d pain, we survive am. It's generational abeg. They will get over it

It doesn't have to be those particular hairstyles. They can even cut the hair of it comes to that.

Cold does not make hair softer, if at all, it makes it drier.
