Which Nigerians don’t pay tax? This is a myth that has been debunked several times. We already pay VAT, companies and businesses already pay tax, salary earners already pay income tax, small businesses even those by the roadside already pay taxes in form of levies to local governments where they are setup.

A greater number of the population don't pay tax.

Your local government council tax, VAT and the likes is different from income tax (which only salary earners pay).

Also, most of the informal taxes are usually illegal and end up in private pockets.

Then only those with bank account and tin should vote during election.

During election all the advance technology will be abandoned and votes will be flying from the north.if they can demand tin for bank account they should do the same during voting...no TIN no bank account no voting

Is it that you cannot read or you are just in a hurry to insult your people? Did you not see that the amendment will require banks to demand TIN from prospective and existing individual bank account holders? Where is the lie?

Nowhere in the world do people love to pay tax.

It has always been so since the time of Jesus Christ that even Jews went to him to ask if they should pay tax to Caesar even when it was recorded that he himself paid tax.

I feel and understand the angst of people. The brighter side is that when the people are in the tax net and pay or forced to pay, they will hold government more accountable than they currently do. Is it not hypocritical that most of the loudest critics of government, especially on the social media are mostly folks who don't pay tax yet they enjoy petrol subsidy, electricity subsidies and be be lo. If we keep funding subsidies and most of us don't pay tax, then government will only continue to borrow and some corrupt public officials escape our pressure because the money being stolen is not your tax .

I really doubt if governance was as lacklustre in Aba in 1929 as it is now yet it's on record that women of Aba went on rampage to protest against tax hike and I had to memorize the year and the event in Primary School.

So what changed? As more free money was flowing in from oil, government paid less attention to tax, giving more people more disposable income and corrupt officials extra from the stealing from the free oil revenue inflows the opportunity to marry more wives and have more kids, even excess kids, our population ballooned and suddenly all resources became stretched and insufficient and here we are today when vicious competition for scarce resources is at almost every doorstep and almost back to the Hobbesian state..

These economic measures, like SAP,Austerity measures of those days, and improved social, political and security architecture will eventually cancel the factors that disturbed the positive equilibrium/stability we had before free oil money started pouring in.
We will be alright las las.

Let's not stop praying and hoping for the best in life and for this great nation.

All the enemies of Nigeria,Nigerians and lovers of Nigeria will lose las las. They always lose. God bless Nigeria forever.

I'm fvcking crying right now. I've never earned a dime from this country. I've never gotten a dime from this government. I’ve never benefitted from any government program since I was born in this country. All the jobs I've held came from Foreign companies based abroad and now they're still going to take my money.

I hate this government so much.

Don't you get it?
If more people paid taxes we would have more participation of the populace in government.

Most people don't care because they don't pay tax. If people cared enough Nigeria would be sane.

We pay tax even excess tax at that

On PMS, LPG, etc we pay VAT

On your gotv, DStv, & other cable TV we pay vat

When you make calls with your phone, you pay VAT

On every commodity you buy, you pay VAT

Each time you receive deposit of 10k Naira & above on your bank account, you pay 50naira stamp duty charges which is tax

Every transfer you make from your bank account, you pay 7.5% of transfer fee as VAT

What else does this government want?

What have we benefit from this insane administration if not poverty, & insecurity?

Who are d "most Nigerians that still don't pay tax"? Can u mention them?

What has corruption got to do with not paying taxes?

Please with all due respect you’re talking nonsense, before the introduce TIN to be mandatory as a key requirement for signing up an account they should check the system and see high unemployment rate in the country, so where do you expect the unemployed to get Tax payers identity card? You must not be so stupid to accept whatever gibberish this government thrown at you, if they want to enforced people to pay tax they should go to the various institutions and companies that are having employees on their payroll and tax the d
Company directly to make a deduction and remit to government, stop being so foolish there’s no place in the world were such is require even as good as Canada you don’t need a tax pay ID to sign up an account because everybody isn’t employed

Which participation of the populace in govt are u talking about? What has that got to do with paying tax?

There's a direct corellation betweem tax payments and citizen participation in governance.

Everybody, or at least, most people care where their money goes. So, tax them and they suddenly begin to care. Accountability increases.

Nigeria is largely ran on proceeds from oil. We run a rent free economy. This means that the people are detached from governance because most of them don't realise or see how they directly contribute to the affairs of the country.

This means that the government can choose to swindle the people. As a citizen of Nigeria do you know how much barrel of oil Nigeria refines daily? Do you know how much it earns from these exports?

You probably don't. Nigeria is largely ran with oil proceeds and not taxes. Which is why we are finding it strange to be taxed by the government.

Organised societies run heavily on taxes and the citizens demand that their tax money is spent judiciously.

Someone sent 10k into my account, I would have to give 5k to someone and withdraw 5k for him since I am meeting him in a few minutes, the bank debited #120 from it for God knows what, then POS charge was 150, remaining #9780.
