Don't you get it?
If more people paid taxes we would have more participation of the populace in government.

Most people don't care because they don't pay tax. If people cared enough Nigeria would be sane.

Even if new born and those who died within the last 4 years pay taxes, the governance and the participants would remain the same.

How is VAT and local govt council tax different from income tax?

Value added tax = Tax you pay on a commodity. For instance, you need to have bought an item to pay this tax.

Local government Council tax = Tax usually placed on each property in a certain council or local area. This tax is paid to your local council for the general maintenance of the community.

Income tax = Tax placed on the income you make.

There are several other kinds of taxes. But they are all different.

I thought taxes are for those who earn an income in Nigeria or because they find money in one's account, they just deduct taxes?

What happened to the VATS they collect in many ways including deductions from savings and current accounts, 10%+ deduction from fixed deposit (from interest accrued)and stocks (from interest accrued)!

Please with all due respect you’re talking nonsense, before the introduce TIN to be mandatory as a key requirement for signing up an account they should check the system and see high unemployment rate in the country, so where do you expect the unemployed to get Tax payers identity card? You must not be so stupid to accept whatever gibberish this government thrown at you, if they want to enforced people to pay tax they should go to the various institutions and companies that are having employees on their payroll and tax the d
Company directly to make a deduction and remit to government, stop being so foolish there’s no place in the world were such is require even as good as Canada you don’t need a tax pay ID to sign up an account because everybody isn’t employed

I'm not going to answer specifics about the Nigeria tax system. You have the FIRS and state councils for that.

I've just basically explained how VAT, council tax and income tax are different forms of taxes.

To simplify things:

Vat = tax placed on consumer goods.

Local council tax = Tax often placed on properties/residents in a particular precinct or local area.

Income tax = Tax placed on the income you make.

Nowhere in the world do people love to pay tax.

It has always been so since the time of Jesus Christ that even Jews went to him to ask if they should pay tax to Caesar even when it was recorded that he himself paid tax.

I feel and understand the angst of people. The brighter side is that when the people are in the tax net and pay or forced to pay, they will hold government more accountable than they currently do. Is it not hypocritical that most of the loudest critics of government, especially on the social media are mostly folks who don't pay tax yet they enjoy petrol subsidy, electricity subsidies and be be lo. If we keep funding subsidies and most of us don't pay tax, then government will only continue to borrow and some corrupt public officials escape our pressure because the money being stolen is not your tax .

I really doubt if governance was as lacklustre in Aba in 1929 as it is now yet it's on record that women of Aba went on rampage to protest against tax hike and I had to memorize the year and the event in Primary School.

So what changed? As more free money was flowing in from oil, government paid less attention to tax, giving more people more disposable income and corrupt officials extra from the stealing from the free oil revenue inflows the opportunity to marry more wives and have more kids, even excess kids, our population ballooned and suddenly all resources became stretched and insufficient and here we are today when vicious competition for scarce resources is at almost every doorstep and almost back to the Hobbesian state..

These economic measures, like SAP,Austerity measures of those days, and improved social, political and security architecture will eventually cancel the factors that disturbed the positive equilibrium/stability we had before free oil money started pouring in.
We will be alright las las.

Let's not stop praying and hoping for the best in life and for this great nation.

All the enemies of Nigeria,Nigerians and lovers of Nigeria will lose las las. They always lose. God bless Nigeria forever.
The moment I saw the long explanatory note I knew its u. Now do ask urself is there a fixed salary payments for both the private and public sectors that the govt must charge the private sector for tax? In abroad we always compare and want to upgrade to there is a fixed salary per hour or per annum for everyone in both sectors.
Here in Nigeria a constable receives far more than a local vigilante or security man and u want to tax the security man or is it the factory workers in Lagos and other parts of the country who works from 7am to 7pm and sometimes there pay is below 30k while a corper receives above that for sitting in an office from 8am to probably 2-4pm?. Or should we compare the publics schools in which some of the teachers hardly teach or even spends quality time with students yet earns more than most private school teachers across the country

Until there is a voice from the red and green chambers for a balance of payment to all and sundry I don't think they should enforce taxes on people.
U never imagined a pure water seller on the road in Lagos to pay tax. Or a farmer whom the government gives no support whatsoever should pay tax?

Sigh. Okay.

1. By participation, I mean the people holding their government accountable.

2. When people pay tax or are correctly taxed, they tend to be more concerned about what their tax money is used for.

You should note that govt in Nigeria does not listen to anything other than violence, so are we going to hold them accountable by violence or by doing anything peacefully?

Anything done peacefully is usually met with violence on the part of the government, this is why Nigerians are mostly docile because no one wants to die.

Imagine asking Buhari to give account of his frittering away of tax payers money on his usual junketing and medical tourism, ask peacefully, then you would wait till eternity, while you would have FreestuffNG, vedaxcool, Jamo, blackfire, Lovenorth and co come here to tell us we have no right to.

Yeah right, I provide my electricity, education of my kids (unsubsidized), provide my water, my shelter, Healthcare and every other thing. So you then want me to fund government to be junketing around, flying jets with yusuf and his sisters? To continue finding the police etc that then turns the guns against citizens, that extort (tax) citizens in the roads? Same with customs, immigration, roadsafety etc. I will pay tax the immigration will charge me for passport and still extort me.
Or I should pay tax from what I earn in Lagos and they should send it to kano, zamphara, bornu, where they will destroy alcohol and fund terrorism?
Omo as it is, we already pay enough tax, fuel tax, vehicle reg, VAT, land use, local give charges etc.
The country earns revenue from oil too. Let them use that one.
Afterall the road around my street is soo bad I change shocks every 6 months. Let them fix it first.

I understand your sentiments.

But, trust me, people will always revolt sooner rather than later If they feel their own money, personal income made, not oil money, is being spent lavishly by those in authority.

How did you think most monarchies failed or most revolution began?

Nigerians on their own part must also begin to elect better leaders and participate in democracy.

There's no point paying taxes and electing crooks. It's like allowing goats guard your yams.
