No, but, you see, if I had discovered programming in my under days, God save me if I don't drop out.
Degree helped me connect with lots of people who in turn gave me connections.

Yep...Each time an educated illiterate comes here on NL to rant rumours and hearsays.
With all the storm and no rain. No objective and concrete argument.
You d×mn right I am ashamed, in a country where a graduate is left to the mercy of hunger and the future is bleak...you d×amn right I regret not taking up a shoe cobbler apprenticeship opportunity out there while I had the chance.

It took me....decades to realize the purpose of school is to acquire knowledge in order to make informed decisions and not to carry papers. I am studying for PhD now and I enjoy learning and doing my work...this has also translated to personal life choices, tracking news and trends, analyzing data, picking the right investments and so on...if you don't immerse yourself into the true essence of learning, education will be useless to you.

Sometimes I feel I made a serious mistake going to the tertiary institution.
I had my OND degree about 8 years ago after several months of job searching I realised I couldn't get a job with it and the OND is just as useless as ssce I decided to get a better degree I wrote jamb I got admitted to the university 5 years ago to study engineering.
Now in a few months to my graduation (if ASUU call off the strike) I feel I made a great mistake going back to school.
I feel all the efforts, time and money is be wasted.
I feel going back to school was a mirage cus after school will I still go back to the street as usual.
Do you ever regret going to school?

If as an adult you still think the only point to schooling is just so you can get a job, all your education is a waste. Knowledge is a tool and not an end in itself, only a bad workman quarrels with his tools. Whoever told you your degree certificate is an automatic ticket to the good life lied to you. If you like dropout in your final year, wetin concern NL, na only you go regret am later! grin

I went to a technical college 3 years (Mechanical Engineering) within 3 years I have worked with 5 manufacturing companies as Mechanical Technician, I'm currently taking home 100+ salary, by next year I will enrolled for OND then HND, my boss told me I will be needing those certificates in future time for promotions and salary bargain, I'm not ashamed I want to start my OND at the age of 27

Pls nairaland guard me Dos and Dont in polytechnic

Good.

But don't you think you should go to a Uni if Salary bargain is your ultimate goal. BSc. is better in that area.

But if hands on skills is your thing, then by all means, go ahead.

By the way, what Technical school did you go to?

Even though I'm not currently using the certificate I acquired to work (resigned* last year), I'm still grateful I had the certificate...

Going to tertiary institutions should not be solely for the aim of the certificate or the financial benefits the certificate can be used for but the knowledge gained which should be very vital for the society. Schools should refine you to become a better version of yourself smiley

For sound Minds like Mine.

I'm boldly telling you there Is no knowledge you wish to acquire in the four walls of classroom which you can't achieve outside the four walls.

Lately, schooling In Nigeria is an absolute waste of time and resources.

The only reason I will get in the four walls of classroom in Nigeria is Just to build my Network with people. I mean reasonable people and Intellects.

It helps to be in a state (one's background) or a society (one's country) where basic needs aren't immediately pressing on the individual to satiate learning.

The state of basic need makes everything else seem farfetched.

@OP

If you think going back to school is expensive or a waste of time, you should have tried ignorance.

Don't let anyone deceive you, education is one of the best and most expensive gifts you can give to yourself.

Like I'd always say; it is better to have a certificate you don't need, than to need a certificate you don't have.

Complete your education and go out there in faith. God will sort you out.

Re: Do You Ever Regret Getting A Degree? by traihit: 10:26pm On Mar 11, 2023
Getting a degree is the first step God is using to lift me out of poverty.

I haven't used my degree to get a job per se, but my degree hasn't given me opportunity to develop knowledge which is giving me more money than I need for my current lifestyle.

Education (not merely delimited to getting a degree) is one of the surest ways to rise to the top.

To avoid regrets, if you have a poor financial background, do these:

1. Only go for the top-notch courses, mainly, Medicine, Pharmacy, (certain) Engineering, Med lab Science, and Maybe Law as well as accounting (<26 YO is important here).
Reason: They may not earn you much initially, but they offer you the opportunity to make so much fulfillment and relevance along the line.

2. While at these, give you all, and make the highest grade you possibly could.
Reason: They will come in handy in placements. Most unemployed grads have degrees below 2nd class lower.
Did you know:
A second class upper cert in the vast degrees they are puts you in position to get a full scholarship abroad

3. Self-learn or pay to learn key tech programmes.
Reason: They pay you well when you're capable, and you don't have to major in them in school. They may put you in position to earn in dollars.

4. Learn a skill - from a successful boss.
Reason: It makes you relevant anywhere. You can even do this while in school or prior.

5. Learn a business - from a successful boss.
Reason: This, when done well esp. in a specified market, can be your best venture - particularly if you can read and write.

6. School/no school, degree/no degree, education or not. Be ingenious!

You wrote certain for engineering.
Why are you selective?
Pls do tell me important engineering courses

Though I'm not using mine at the moment but I tell you I didn't regret it one bit. what will you do if the opportunity arise and you don't have the qualification? One of my motivations back in school are those people that are already doing well financially but still go back to school. I believe there's something making them to consider going to school and I don't want to experience that.

Best thing is to go and think of how to make money, if you make money schooling will be easy and not a time wasted one. To me, anything education in Nigeria is over, I can't study anymore in Nigeria, I prefer to gather the money and do a business within some months. After making money, I will then leave. Ave done research on watermelon farming, have got land, got haulage service, got buyers in Lagos, just to plant by November and sell by January, within 3 months, expenses of 150k will make me about 3millions. Watermelon, cucumber, peppers, tomatoes are plants not really planted in South West, Majority plants cassava, maize, yam. The plants above takes time unlike the former plants. All ripe within 3 months, in 3 months, you make your money, No amount you can take to places like Lagos that will be enough for them. Lagos population is about 22million, so, consumption is high there. An acre should give about 3000 fruits of it. If you continue getting degree without using the degree to work or make tangible income, You might be wasting your time unknowingly. Have planted watermelon before, only on a subsistence base.

Now this Is what I call Real Education.

You are Wiser and Better than 90% of Nigeria Mediocres who Call themselves Graduratesgrin
