Turn it the other way around, would wives be glad to share theirs with their husbands in the same terms and spirit?

Nevertheless, I support the judgement

Very good for him

A lesson to men saying they are polygamous in nature, the second wife will make them regret and jolt them back to sense.

All the first wife can do is try to take her case to the courts but since her marriage was done traditionally and depending on the state where it was done, I doubt much can be done for her case.

This is a revolutionary judgement . It no longer matters any more whose name is on the original property titles. The properties of the man is jointly owned by him and his wife even if it's paid for by the man.

The net worth of marriage for a man used to be absolute zero(although many are yet to clue in on this fact), now in Lagos at least it is now less than zero. I just hope that this nonsense does not stray out of Lagos.

the woman contributed 200k as part of the 400,000 payment she paid another money after loan people nearly sold the houseand married for over 35 year, yet the man thought he own the house fully and exclusively alone
Typically the man whose name is on it usually carries it all while tye woman is abandoned at the end with nothing to her name. But this judgment hopefully means an end to all that in Nigeria. undecided

Don't sensationalise the judgement.. the woman contributed severally towards that property hence the judgement

"This inference of trust, the one for the other is readily apparent when each has made a financial contribution to the purchase price or the mortgage installment."

From the man's defense, the judge only relied on the woman's side of the story to give judgement.

Marriage is a business partnership, meaning that even being a housewife is a form of contribution to the business. undecided

It cannot stand. It will be appealed. I will work and build a house and a woman is using her own money the way she wants and even sending endlessly to her family, then I want to dispose off the property for an important issue, then a court will say the woman is a co-owner and to enjoy the proceeds of the sales?

The woman can only be a co-owner if she partly financed the acquisition of the property in any way.

You won't make a good judge.

The woman made claims.

She brought no evidence of such.

That's why the husband had a counter argument-that she didn't contribute.

He could not have said that if she brought proof of payment

He denied further that he did not pay N400,000:00 for the property as suggested by his wife but that he paid N3.750 million, which was deducted from his terminal benefit.

Re: Lagos Court Grants Wives Equal Rights Over Husbands’ Properties by RighteousI: 2:42pm On May 30, 2023
Get your facts right. The title of this post is misleading.
The high court has not granted equal ownership to women.

The judge in this case only made this personal pronouncement in regards to this case.

Only the house of assembly can pass such a law and that will never happen in a male dominated legislature.

And besides I urge the women in Nigeria and Africa not to rely on any court judgment for rights to the husband's property because their lives will be at risk.

This is violent Africa, do you actually believe that the average and wicked Nigerian man can be forced into giving half of his property to the wife? You better run for your life, he will definitely kill you or he will send boys to rape and beat you up.

It cant work.
So, I worked hard, gather properties, my wife decides to cheat or quit marriage and claim ownership of the said property that I worked for?
Rubbish!
She should claim such ownership if she also contributed to the purchase of such property

Hope our sentimentality did not sit at the head of this judgement
We want to be a better people without being better a persons.
We have cultural and traditional institutions which have stakes in our lives in this country.
Since we respect them so much, where do we leave their judgements too.
Let's work on all the laws......or almost all.
Not one today .....half tomorrow

That judgement is a total nonsense. The judge is just defending the woman on the basis of contribution. Since the purchaser is not aware of any encumbrance surrounding the house, injustice has been meted out to him. What should have been done should be that the man divides the amount realised from the sale equally between himself and the wife if they both truly contributed 200k each to the purchase of the house. That is a more equitable position than the one which has carried out injustice on an innocent buyer.

The implication of this judgment will make Nigeria to review the Marriage act.
It is time for prenuptial contract,
Marriage in community of property and
Marriage according to the law of Nigeria.

I think the judgement favoured her because she was married to her husband for a very long time, also her money was used to pay off the collateral. I'm pretty sure the husband is going to appeal the judgement.

Woe betide you having a case with a woman and it's brought before a female judge.

Less than 1 out of 1000 will do the right thing.
