However, there are certain things that the government should learn from the Lekki toll-gate issue.

1) Better public relations: Government should have sought the opinions of residents before signing the contract, so that it is aware of any concerns the people have.

2) Mass transit component: This will reduce congestion and pollution and cater for the poor who can't afford the tolls (BRT shouldn't pay toll and they should quickly construct the Lekki green rail line).

3) Alternative roads: there must be alternative roads so that we'll prevent a situation where we have private monopoly.
Re: Residents Warn Against Uncontrollable Chaos Over Lekki Tolling - SaharaReporters by Kobojunkie: 5:19am On Dec 12, 2011
Now you are being reasonable. . . . All you have above  is what the people have been saying from the beginning though. There have made no request for freebies but simply that the government respect them in decision making process since they are tax payers and are just as entitled to these things from their government.

The silly pretense that these people are not taxpayers and hence do not deserve good service from their government is not only bubble-head reasoning from clear indications that one is disconnected from the reality of life in Lagos. And back to your earlier claim, Civil Servants were not the only group that paid taxes even through the military years. Even Store owners in that state paid taxes, many simply to avoid wahala from the military men. So, please go back and do your research before you make these baseless claims on threads.

Sorry, many of us DO pay taxes. I don't think there's any one who can argue that we taxpayers get value for our money.

ekt_bear:

Heh. As much as one day I'd like to serve my people, they seem to be a very ornery lot, difficult to govern.

I salute Fashola for dragging his people to the 21st century, even over the protests of many who would prefer to remain in the stone age.

Forward ever, backwards never.

You're dangerously close to stating that Fashola is perfect. That just doesn't make sense. People have the right to protest unreasonable decisions if they negatively impact their lifestyle.

I see some merit in the arguments by these folks living in Lekki. The crux of their argument is that existing roads should not be tolled by the LCC and Lagos State Government and that makes perfect sense to me. Setting up nigh perpetual toll gates for existing roads after cosmetic upgrades does not make sense.

Let them toll only new roads constructed by the LCC. If there must be toll gates on the existing road, they MUST provide evidence that costs incurred in revamping the existing roads runs were very high.

Well your assumption wasn't right . . .There is no alternative to the tolled road . . ,  . .Are you in Lagos presently . . .If no .  .cos your newspaper reference is different from what is obtainable on ground . .Do some research . . . .

Thank you jare jmaine. This was why I was not emphatic about it because I was not certain about what was on ground there. I wrote that I thought they had provided alternatives as I believe there should be at least an alternative route before they start tolling. In fact, this was one of the reasons why they postponed the tolling.

My position was more like I wanted a clear clarification before the deranged individual who tagged himself djustice started littering everywhere with insults and curses.

Not only have Lagosians ALWAYS PAID TAXES, whether civil servants or not, we are now paying more taxes, mostly duplicated and obnoxious, than we have ever paid before in the history of Nigeria, directly and indirectly.

We are entitled to certain services and infrastructure, based on just our taxes. If the Tinubu/Fashola government were not quite as profligate with our taxes as they've been for the last 12 years, with all their low-quality and grossly over-priced projects being used to suck money out of the treasury, we would have made much more progress. But alas, the hungry lion at Bourdillon must be fed, with his penchant for lubricating the judiciary, the civil service - federal and states, the police, INEC, federal ministers and just about every bribeable person, with free funds from Lagos Taxpayers.

All this is being done at the expense of Lagos Taxpayers. This is the same reason why The Palms, a high footfall venue frequented by taxpayers, is made a laborious place to visit by Tinubu's LCC simply because the owner would not give him a 50% share of the facility, just for approving his Physical Planning application. Same way he acquired 50% of Oriental Hotel, and the same reason he stymied the growth of the Lagos Free Trade Zone (different from the Lekki Free Zone, which is Bola Tinubu's project.) All these paid hacks screaming that we want anything for free in Lagos either don't live here or are part of the privileged ACN crew who simply feed on the rest of us and contribute nothing. They see Lagosians as cows to be milked, which is why they see nothing wrong with tolling an inner city road - first time this has been done ANYWHERE in the world. This is also the highest number of toll plazas per kilometre in the world (3 within 23km).

This is a record-breaking project for all the wrong reasons. It is the most expensive road expansion project in the world, pound for pound, dollar for dollar, which is highly befuddling, considering the relatively low cost of labor in Nigeria, compared to say, the USA, where similar projects, but with higher quality of construction and finish, generally cost about 50% of what is being charged here.

It is the worst designed road expansion project, viewed through the prism of ease-of-use, considering the number of bottlenecks introduced in the form of roundabouts and Toll Plazas.

It is also one of the world's least safe roads to live on now, on account of the ugly fence which makes it impossible to see when a robbery is going on behind the fence. The proliferation of roundabouts on a 3 carriageway freeway also make it quite unsafe to drive on.

In terms of quality, the undulation and bobbling on the road surface in the stretches of road already "completed" begs the question as to why this particular contractor, Hitech, was given the job. The answer lies in the very reason most are opposed to the entire idea of concessioning the road - high-level racketeeering, rapacious corruption, abuse of office and the hardship that all of these issues bring to bear on the lives of the people living within this sophisticated prison facility, referred to copiously in the "agreement" as the "concession area".

We will not pay, and we are ready to fight Fashola's government, Tinubu's thugs and federal forces, if they are collaborating, to a standstill, if need be. Let heavens fall. WE WILL NLOT PAY A KOBO!!

Bros, I live there o. The worst part of the story is that the ENTIRE access into or out of the peninsula has been concessioned to LCC - Coastal Road, Northern Bypass, Lekki-Ikoyi Link bridge, and they reserve the right to erect toll plazas ANYWHERE on the road. The government are not even allowed to provide ANY untolled alternative route, except by air!!! That is the slave trade agreement Tinubu signed with himself, to enslave us in his Lekki Peninsular prison.

On the 18th, we will know whether Fashola, Tinubu and Oforiokuma have liver. That is the day they will know what Lagos truly is.

In a country where most people live on less than 1$ a day, Is it morally justifiable that residents pay circa $1 per toll gate to get out of their homes? Almost 6$ a day to and fro through 3 toll gates.   Na wah oh!

All the examples comparing cities around the world with Lagos don't cut it,  the circumstances are completely different and the peoples' perceptions of their governments are different.

What's the point of paying huge income taxes?  I  provide water for my home, the developer of my estate constructed the roads leading to the estate and inside it, we pay for our own security and armed response, i pay for private health care ( there's no general hospital in Lekki axis), i pay for private school.

Now we should also pay  to leave our homes,  they can even come and toll the air we breath

Funny people, make una go toll 3rd mainland bridge, let know you are serious about tolling.

I think most people responding either do not live on the lekki-ajah axis or dont even live in Lagos.
Why won't the residents be mad about paying tolls.
Don't be decided. There was nothing bad about the LEKKI AJAH expressway prior to LCC. The only problem was TRAFFIC due to overcongestion. Yes maybe some potholes here and there but the road was in an excellent condition when compared to other roads in Lagos.
So now for LCC to come and add one lane on either side of the road and start collecting tolls on the road is outrageous for three reasons. 1.) Why would they be collecting toll on an already existing road just because they added lanes to the side. They should have built their own road (coastal road) and tolled that one. 2.)LCC's selling point was that the "new" road will alleviate traffic, ,,,,total bullocks. There is and will still be traffic on that road because LCC failed to correct the ONE PROBLEM THHAT CAUSES TRAFFIC on that road "ROUNDABOUTS". They ought to have built "FLYOVERS" at all the roundabout locations. LCC claimed roundabouts would have been too expensive. Imagine, they want to collect tolls, but they don't want spend money. How would you feel if you start paying tolls on that road and the only difference from before is just a bunch of fences and flowers!! 3.) The toll fee is unnecessarilly high.
Lagos state govt better pay penalties to LCC and leave that road untolled if they don't want trouble

People are wicked and unreasonable. When investors are building this road, they are all hoping and clapping for Lagos govt and there is no gain-saying that the road has helped the properties along that raod. The prices of real estate properties have risen astronomically since the advent of that road. Now the investors want their money back they are making useless noise.

Rubbish,

Cry me a river
