Dear All, So we have worked hard and come up with the rules which you have seen (and hopefully liked ) and we are almost done with everything. Having learned the lesson of listening for opinions in order to make this better we are coming up with two options and would like debaters and readers alike to choose which they would prefer. Option 1 Debate as a Team Debating as a team and meeting to strategise, we allow each team a chance to post something for each round, the choice of who and content of post goes to the team. They can either choose to streamline their posts in each round for potency or they can allow an individual total control over one round, each round would be unique and there would chance for members to pose rebuttals but the main thing is what ever they do represents their team. This ends a round for the judges/audience to judge and score points for the team. At the end of the rounds the points would be tallied. The rounds would then be tallied along with votes by the audience and a winning team emerges. This would give one single clean debate on one topic and involve everyone albeit in different capacities. All posts will be given words limit. Option 2 Debate as individuals Rather than working debating as a team and meeting to strategise, we allow each debater post his argument for or against the topic, give room for all to read through , then allow each debater to post a rebuttals to any or as many of the opposing views. After that we then allow each debater to defend the rebuttals against him/his views. This ends a round for the judges/audience to judge and score points. Those with the highest point will proceed to the next stage during which the judges will throw new questions in line with the topic to all participants and we follow the same process until the final round The debaters will be given words limit. As always your ideas are welcome. On behalf of debate organizers. |

maclatunji: There will be time for audience/readers to post their views, any post from them before then will be hid. |

@Chrisbenogor #Organisers. Option 1 is better in my opinion if you want to build a cohesive spirit on Nairaland. One-on-One debate will have the feel of a duel and there might not be generous victors and/or gracious er... losers (I couldn't find another word). |

One-on-One debate will have the feel of a duel and there might not be generous victors and/or gracious er... losers (I couldn't find another word). this is an online forum for largely anonymous users and what makes it tick is the diversity of opinions, styles and personalities. What is the need to build a "cohesive spirit"? The debate coordinating team still havent got it... drastically reduce the number of debaters (perhaps 3 on each side) and let them all go at it individually. Debating as a team? lol how on earth do you expect them to coordinate ideas? |

We are waiting for most of the debaters and Judges to express their preference from the 2 options above so we can publish the procedure details. Please lets do this on time. |

freecocoa: OAM4Cocoa,Abeg that 7 don do na. My dear I think the 14 is ok too. We just dont want to be seen as refusing willing participants and we are not going to remove those who have accepted to participate. If more people don't show interest then we can go from 14 to 8 and then to the final 4. @David Jarus is more willing to be a judge and he is already included among the judges. |

Re: Nairaland's Literary & Debating Day - You Are Cordially Invited! by maclatunji: 7:09pm On Jul 19, 2012 |
If eventually you go for Option 1, you can still select the top three debaters across the two teams based on individual appraisal. I imagine that the top three debaters will not emerge from the same team but if they do, give it to them. Of course this idea kind of becomes redundant if Option 2 is selected. Anyone that works for all parties is OK by me. |

Option 2. |
Re: Nairaland's Literary & Debating Day - You Are Cordially Invited! by jaybee3(m): 7:19pm On Jul 19, 2012 |
I'd go for option 2 How about we get even numbers for the total debaters Pair them against each other in round one, give them the opportunity to choose/agree on a preferred yet to be agreed topic. The winner of each round moves to the next round whilst repeating the same process as round 1. I strongly believe doing it this way will not only keep it interesting, it will also make it more manageable for yourself and the judges |

political topics should be debated in politics or general section if the mods cant patrol the thread. this thread has nothing to do with literature despite literary being in the title. but make una carry on- i already know i speak in greek. 1 Like |

jay bee: I'd go for option 2 The pairing would have been nice but I foresee 2 issues: 1. We will need to have equal number of members on each side 2. We may run into pairing trouble in the next round if more people from a side should win in the 1st/an earlier round |
Re: Nairaland's Literary & Debating Day - You Are Cordially Invited! by debosky(m): 7:43pm On Jul 19, 2012 |
I propose a Modified Option 2. Pair up debaters - it is infuriating to carry on a debate when dozens of people are posting at the same time. It lacks coherence and is very difficult to follow for the casual observer. Once the debaters have identified which side they belong, a random pairing to start with and order should be initiated, e.g. Sagamite vs Shymex. Subsequently, the judges should allow a set time (say 1 hour) for two debaters to go at it, after which they judge and decide a 'winner'. Subsequently, the victor should face the next opponent down the list on the opposing side, while the loser drops out, then continue elimination in that fashion. If a victor chooses not to continue, the next person on that side can take over in his stead. The last man/woman standing wins, and by extension his/her side of the argument wins as well. In essence I have me-rixed jaybee's proposal. |
