If when in Nigeria, I'm in the native Yoruba attire and converse in Yoruba language most times, once you see me or hear me speak, you'd know I'm a Yoruba man or have adopted the Yoruba culture.

But if I move to the UK and start dressing like the Englishman and speaking like him after some time, if you come across me for the first time, you'd think I'm a black American who practice the English culture.

Culture is what makes or defines a man.

Good! Now we're actually heading somewhere. Although coming very late.
Now let's go back to where I initially used ibime as an example, a successful man of ijaw roots living in UK, married to a Canadian wife (just assumption) giving birth to mixed kids.
Now let's assume, ibime dresses in normal jeans and polo or trouser and nice iron shirts to office, eats burger and veggies and soup of different varieties over there with bagel, cereals and whatnot, many of things not usually seen here in ijaw land for instance and has no religious inclination, is ibime doing anything wrong at all despite living a good and worthwhile life?
Why should Ibi.me (just one person) based in the UK be the standard for millions of Ijaw people in Nigeria?

I don't know why a UK resident is the example you chose to discuss African culture? Is Africa in the UK?

Then, I don't know if Ibi.me has told you he doesn't engage in any cultural practice of the Ijaw people such as speaking the language, listening to the native songs, and others.

Even if he abandons the native culture, what point does that prove when he's not even based in Ijawland with millions of natives?

If I was living in the UK, I'd also be engaging in all these things you listed. But that doesn't mean I'd stop engaging in my native cultural practices or condemn my culture.

You don't expect an Ijaw man to be speaking Ijaw to an English man or dressing like an Ijaw man to work when he's in the UK.

Most immigrants do most of their cultural practices at home with their families or online.

Culture is the software of the mind. All these monikers are the identities of people online on this forum.

The monikers are part of who they're online and show their culture.

So what if ibime decided to just be called , xae like Elon musk's child or something a simple name like glorious?

Secondly, you are still not explaining how exactly ones culture defines the person. Like how exactly ones culture defines the person.
All these your silly questions sha. What defines a person are things like their name, style of dressing, language, beliefs, profession. All these are aspects of culture or influenced by culture.

If Ibi.me decides to bear xae, that xae is from a language from another culture. Language is one of the elements of a culture.

Even if it's a nickname, it has become his culture and part of his identity.

How about you stop inferring what I mean and give me a practical example of how a culture "makes people who they are" ?

I gave an example of ibime in UK, how does him coming from ijaw "make him ibime who he is"?
Ibi.me is an Ijaw name. If it were the Arabs, they'd even add their native town to their name making their names usually long.

Your culture (whether the native ones or any foreign one you adopt) is what defines you. You don't have to agree, but it's just the truth.

What you want to learn online on this subject is better learnt from your people.

Today, billions of people (Muslims) around the world are celebrating and promoting the Arabic culture and engaging in their rituals and worshipping their deity.

The Arabs vehemently promote and defend their culture anywhere in the world you find them and even kill for it.

Their cultural values have been ingrained in them and their children over the years and they know if you don't uphold your culture and practice it, you'll become enslaved to other cultures from foreign lands.

No humans can live without a culture which is software of the mind, and if you think your culture has no value (since you yourself have no value), you're in slavery to a foreign culture you see foolishly as superior.

The average Arab understands these simple things. You can't lay claim to intelligence when you say the history of your people is useless and their culture is barbaric.

You're actually very dumb when you say all the aspects of the ways of life, values, norms, customs, and beliefs of over 1.4 billion people in a region are barbaric and backward.

You're actually very silly as no culture in the world is absolutely good or absolutely evil. Every culture in the world has its good and bad sides.

Every culture not just the African cultures.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by A001: 10:18pm On Mar 23, 2023
The Americans spend billions of dollars yearly to preserve their history and culture. The Europeans do the same thing; the Asians too; and other peoples around the world.

So I guess these billions of people don't know we're in modern times.

But this one wey don kolo is saying your culture as a people has no value and that Africa history is useless. The African cultures should be abolished.

A person with a sound mind knows no human can survive and thrive without a culture. Only a lunatic on Nairaland feels an African should abolish his culture and embrace that of his slave masters and colonial masters.

He really loves being in chains as a slave.

But many asian and African history has already been lost and we're still living! Infact much of our history has been erased and we're still advancing, albeit slowly.

And mind you, I'm not saying we shouldn't know our history. I'm not saying that the knowledge is bad, I'm saying that it's of less relevance to our world.

Put it simply this way. If you knew what your great grandfather of your family did, how would it affect you as a person?

Sure, it's interesting to feed that curiosity of how life was long ago, but that information is of less relevance and practicality to your own life. That's what it means for history to literally be useless or of less relevance.
Preach to your fellow Ibo brothers, not me. I don't have time for silly discussions.

Let me get this straight, are you saying that after the numerous abuses you have rained on me, you yourself have no idea what you're talking about??

So you're an empty chest beater? All noise and no substance??
Anyone who tries in the least beat to engage your points is met with fierce abuse and in the end you're actually a heavy John snow, you know nothing??

Then from what vantage point are you throwing abuses? What is the aim of your insults when you say, "ohh, this person is low IQ, this person is ignorant"? You that is enlightened, how come you can't make any intellectual point of note but always want to avoid debates when engaged??

So what is the point of your noise here??

You make noise about Africa Africa Africa, meanwhile when asked about it, you can't deliver anything? Even an empty barrel will let be as loud as your head when knocked. You actually have no right to insult anyone when you know nothing. Abeg shift.

You are useless!
Lols, you don't have to tell me I'm useless now. Once you said African history is useless, you've said all Africans are useless already including yourself.

That's why I said you should tell your fellow Ibo brothers that African history is useless. They'd educate you.

Even to utter all these foolish things you're saying here offline among your fellow Ibos will be difficult.

Which kind of person says the history of his people is useless and the culture of his people is barbaric if not a lunatic?

I swearoGod, you're not sounding like an educator, I'm literally asking you to indulge what you think is my foolishness, rather than rain abuses.

Explain your points better. Yes I agree, I am very stupid, I am ignorant, I am senseless.

Now can you make coherent points as to what it means to be "African"? Or how our identities affect us personally or the role in our lives?

Remember that I used Ibime as a perfect example of my point.

A successful man of Nigerian roots, immigrated to UK, married to a Canadian spouse (false I know), have children who are born in UK and have divergent origins.

Please what exactly is the practicality of ibime's "African" identity? He's most likely irreligious, he most likely doesn't give a damn about "old traditions and ancient practices" or observe any "traditional days". And these things barely have a relevance in his life,so please using Ibime as an example, can you tell me the practicality of his "roots"?

Please don't insult my naivety. yes I agree I am stupid and an idiot, now can you please educate my ignorance, thanks.
Just say these things among your Ibo brothers. They'll educate you.

Your fellow Ibos are in a better position to educate you, not me.

I'm on Nairaland to interact with others and learn from other members, especially the highly intelligent ones.

I've said enough on this discussion.

And just like that, the same linear responses everything.
Once you see an opposing point, you shout about it, call it low IQ, foolish, stupid but don't end up serving an intellectual counter. How then does one learn from you?

Please I'm on my knees begging you to be a good educator because lord knows I am genuinely curious to see what exactly you see when you talk about our history, about our identity.

I'm also philosophically inclined person, in the sense that I like to think outside the box, I like to see the world outside my own and understand the world better with its complexities. You too, clearly share aspects of that. But I see tribal identities as something inimical to the growth of the human race.

Because I like to think that the more we box ourselves into different groups, the more we see ourselves as different people with different goals, hence room for strife between us.

So once again, I ask you, what is this "afro-centrism" you speak of? How is it beneficial to us as individuals and to the society? What is its practicality to us?
I no get your time. I implore you to preach that African history is useless to your fellow Ibos and tell them their culture is barbaric and backward.

I've better things to do with my time.

If this one travels overseas abroad, and some Europeans or Arabs say this to him, he'd be laughing sheepishly at them and gladly accept what they say as true.

Lols. Na wa o. When they treat him as subhuman and inferior to them later on, he'd be complaining.

Donjazet2:
Where on earth is this coming from, ntori olohun maje?

What is this "afrophobia" you speak of?
I have told you that there is nothing like being African because Africans have no shared identity. That word African is a consequence of geography, nothing more.

Nigeria and Senegal relations is not much different than Nigerian and Chilean relations.

All countries mentioned are superficial in nature with its inhabitants having come from soo many different origins. And these things have no use in the modern world because of how small and united the world has become.

You! Yourself can decide to go live in Argentina today Jamaica tomorrow and your identity will have no impact or meaning on your life whatsoever. A Swiss man could move to Lagos today and his identity will have no meaning on his life whatsoever. What matters are what we make of our personal lives.

Let's take for example, ibime today, (I like to use him because I admire and respect him) is a man of Nigerian origins with a foreign wife(he's told me countlessly, that this isn't the case but let's just assume it is), now let's see Ibime an ijaw man but has lived the vast majority of his life in London and has kids with a foreigner of perhaps Canadian origin and has children of this union, of what impact is his African identity to him??

What use is it to his life? What practicality is it to him that he is African??

I really need you to let me see what you're seeing to see that point of view because you are soo bad at educating.

You always get triggered negatively by opposing views and fly into petty abuses rather than educating. Please explain in simple terms the practicality of being "African" or the role of this identity in our personal lives.
You said African history is useless. If African history is useless, the history of the whole world is useless.

First explain why African history is useless, but you limited it to only Africans. You're invariably saying the history of the whole world is useless.

Don't waste your time. I didn't bother to read this your epistle. You're not worth my time.

An African that says "African history is useless" is too dull for me to engage.

If African history is useless, that means European history is also useless; American history is useless; Asian history is also useless, and the same thing applies to all the other continents of the world.

That means the history of the whole world is useless. Nothing but lunacy will make a person say "African history is useless".

Preach this nonsense to your fellow Ibo brothers. If they castigate you as every sane African would, you can come back here and shout "targeted attack by Ibos" instead of your usual "targeted attack on Ibos".

A001, out of curiosity, I would like to know your opinion on this new Ugandan anti-gay bill.

As one unshackled by the doctrines of religion but aligned with afro-centrism, what is your view towards homosexuality (gay people) and their place in the modern world?

If you were a religious person, I can already guess your answer as it being a sin and not acceptable to "God" on earth but as someone without the burden of religious doctrines and supernatural edicts, what are your views about this?
Not interested in this topic. My view about homosexuality still stays the same like most agnostics or atheists.

The Ugandan president should wipe away all the history of his country since his history and culture as an African are useless and barbaric as you say.

The president targets a small group of people (minority) with his dangerous ideology but you target a whole continent of over a billion people.

Obviously, you're the bigger evil.

I keep telling you this, knowing history is important but should be left behind. It's not really key to our future.

England and France were once of the worlds worst bitter enemies even having a running active war for 100 full years known as the 100 year war. Today they are the closest allies in the world with barely any friction between the 2.

African history is good to know but barely significant in our growth forward. What we have to focus on is making economic growth as a region, growing trading partners abroad, growing different key parts of our economy, be it agriculture (self sufficiency, and export of cash crops, mining, refining and trading of natural resources like Australia, service industries, tourism, ICT, building our own tech hubs, not all these noise about who we were or are and where we come from. Those sentiments are largely useless.

US is a country made up of immigrants from all over the world and that rich range of diversity is their superpower. The US is largely devoid of a historical and cultural identity. Their story is one of just 300-400 years old and they are what they are.

I'm genuinely tired of afro-centrism in relation to our history because African societies is just too numerous and we barely have a unified history. So what is the need of being yoruba- centric, or igbo-centric, or ibibio-centric?

I see this as largely retrogressive.. our history barely had an input in our path forward because we are too many societies for us to have a coherent one. In summary, African history put quite bluntly is useless. There is no need for it in the modern world.
You see why no sane person should take you seriously on this thread. African history is useless.

You're even much worse than raumdeuter you're trying to paint as evil, and you should be ashamed of yourself as an African.

I encourage you to preach this trash to your fellow Ibos if you won't be castigated.

Charity begins from home.

You said "the US is largely devoid of a historical and cultural identity". The US is a multicultural society and is arguably the most multiculturally diverse country in the world.

The country encourages immigrants to uphold the cultural values of their home country while being law-abiding.

You'll be making erroneous statements all about.

You've to try harder to wipe away African history.

No reasonable person should take you seriously on this thread.

Whether as an individual or people, if you don't know your history and preserve it, you can never be great. It's not a curse, and you're as good as dead.

If you're actually smart, I won't have to explain this further.

An American places the interest of his people and region first before others; the same thing applies to the Britons, the French, the Asians, and others.

But you expect an African not to put the interest of his people and region first?

Something is seriously wrong with this your mentality.

I encourage you to preach this nonsense to your fellow Ibos if you won't be seen as an imbe.

All these your nonsensical posts will haunt you later on.

The other day you were saying Africans should abolish their cultures because they're barbaric and backward and adopt the English culture.

Are you sure everything is all right with you mentally?

You're telling people whose ancestors suffered the horrors of colonialism and slavery in the past to embrace colonialism and slavery in this day and age.

You'll be typing nonsensical posts all about driven by pure emotions without thinking about what you're saying first.

Even some uneducated people aren't this dull.

The documentary "Bigger than Africa" does justice to Yoruba history and how the European and Arab trans-atlantic slave trade affected the Yoruba people.

That documentary and the movies "Ayinla" and "Anikulapo" are some of the best movies I've seen on the Yoruba history and culture in recent times.

While watching Ayinla, a Yoruba movie about the life and times of the great Yoruba artist Ayinla Omowura, I recalled the line, "leke leke gbarada", in one of his songs and wondered why some Yoruba elders thought the late artist used some juju (perhaps gbarada or stealing the glory of others) to boost his musical prowess.

I did some research on this claim and did not see any evidence to believe such (gbarada) is real.

I think Ayinla was a gifted artist. I wonder why people in this part of the world believe juju is the source of the gift of talented people.
