I bet to disagree on that note. Flow through system is far better than any other system. Recirculatory system helps to manage water where water is not sufficient unlike flow through where there is constant water from time to time. It is a total mistake to conclude that a recirculatory system is better than a flow through system. It is less expensive to maintain perhaps it does not cost u a dine and ur fish will perform greatly.

How are you and your family? Please I need your advise as regards DURANTE FEEDS. I want to know if you have any experience about it and whats your take on it?

Durante is a very good feed. I think the 2mm has about 45% crude protein.

lagbaja: Recirculatory systems are not expensive to maintain at all. I speak from experience. In Nigeria, It is far cheaper than all other methods when you place them side by side. It offers high density biomass, as much as 300kg of fish in a 1000litre tank. continuous oxygenation, faster growth rate. All you need to keep it running is an " I better pass my neighbor " generator (which has a capacity of about 500watts) as a back up to your phcn source.

I use a resun 200watts pump with capacity to pump 13000litres per hour. I also use a 50watts uv fitted biofilter tank. I spend less than N500 daily running my system. however, if you run it with PHCN only, it costs about N150 per day. Ie 200watts * 24 hours= 2.4kwattshr. 1 kwattshr costs about N30 if u use a prepaid meter. You also don't need to buy drugs all the time as the drug is continuously recirculated. You don't need frequent water change because the water is continuously cleaned by the system. This is the secret behind the successes of Durante, the biggest fish farm in Nigeria.

As good as the system is, it is still expensive in nature. N500 per day with gen amounts to N15000 ceteris paribus. A lot of small scale catfish farmer cannot afford it, so it is always advisable for them to change water every 3 days and pump water on their fish whenever there is light.

I think part of the reason why we advise farmers to construct a big pond and not to overstock pond is to allow the fish to grow well and to avoid sickness. When there is no spacing or a pond is overcrowded, the fish will not only be small but they may be sick. Also, making use of pumping machine to pump out water from a concrete pond is expensive in nature. Catfish has gone beyond wasting money on it, we need to start minimising cost and maximising profit.

It is not compulsory u give them the drugs but I give my fish wheneva I observe that they hang on water or u use it to prevent. Preventn is beta dan cure.

Get fingerlings perhaps it takes just two weeks to rear them to Juvenile stage.

Local feeds @ least 1000KG ; if per 100KG is N23000
That is N230000
Thus, N50,000 + N230,000 = 280,000
Misc Exp. 20,000 (transport, fuel etc)

You can still make do with the 300K with u. My question to you is that, what kind of pond do u want to make use of? Do u have any pond at the moment? Do u have borehole that can take care of the fish for at least 4 months? Tell me, all what u have available aside from the funds.

I perfectly understand your question. That's what you need to do. You need to drain the water, treat them with salt. That is a kind of prevention and prevention they say is better than cure. Weather condition affects the amount of feeds they consumed so it is always impossible to determine the amount of feed they will eat.

Even if u get the fish that eats if u dont give them adequate care, they may not eat much.


That is y a farmer must constantly change water from time to time, give them norished feed and always observe ur fish from time to time.



When u change ur water atimes, u can use salt to treat them just in case.

Make sure u wash your pond two weeks after stocking otherwise be expecting wide range attack. You can stop washing when u switch over to local feeds but make sure u always put floxinor in their feeds to avoid illness.

excelsiorfarm: @tokugawa,in addition to d solution given, the precaution u should take to avoid future occurence is to manage d pond environment well,grasses should be remove or sprayed with potassium permanganate. u have to be careful on feeding livefoods to your fishes if u do,try to creat avenue for fresh water to come in. d salt will help d wormlike agents to loose their grip,tetracyline is to assist to heal,u can get parasites medicine for fishes from an agric store

In addition to the above point, try and mix tetracyline, procaine penniciline and vit c to the floating feeds, spread it in the sun for a while after which u feed them with it. Cheers,

Catfish farmers and/or intending or aspiring farmers, for the record sake, please do not change feed from one product to another product. It is a very wrong move. It is as if u r giving ur baby NAN 1 and u now change to SMA gold or Peak 123. What do u think will happen to ur baby? If u want to use ziegler, use ziegler. If it is coppens, use coppens. If it is multifeed use it. Do not deviate from one to another. It is wrong and it can lead to a disease outbreak.

It is a name for a drug used in treating fish. It is a combination of three drugs; Oxy, tetracycline and one other drugs like that(forgotten). But there is no meaning to the term NCO


You can use oxy if u don't see NCO.

Location is one of the things to think of before you can determine the kind of fish to supply a pepper soup joint. For example, at IJ where I am, it is between 600 to 800grams but in lag it is between 800grams to 1.2KG depending on the area in lagos. The pepper soup joint owner are the end buyer, the price will invariably rise since they themselves buy from the market women at a high price. So, I expect you to make a very good profit.

TOKUGAWA: My Ogas @ d top,please how can I treat my fishes? I discovered there are tiny worm like agents on their body.By d way I use an earthen pond.

The kind of pond u use will determine the cause of the disease. You need to drain the water in your pond. Try and mix salt with ashes(eru) and NCO. Sprinkle it on their body and all over the pond. Leave them for at least 3 hours before releasing water on them. Also, leave them for atleast 48 hours before you feed them and when u want to feed them at first, feed them little by little. Cheers mate.


The above method is how to treat fish in earthen pond.


However, in concrete or any other pond, u only need to replace ashes with Potassium parmaganate(PG), all other things remain the same ie Salt and NCO.


The above methods can treat any kind of disease involving catfish.

Hello house, something just came to my mind which I think I must share since one of us said he made losses. I'll imploy everyone of us to try and get scale even if it is 50KG, it does not cost more than N5500.00.


If you are a fish farmer and u don't have a scale then you have not started yet because you are just working for the fish buyer. I tell you 99.5% of fish buyer uses fake scale. They are so cunny and there is no way u will know that their scale is not correct unless you use your scale.


Just my two cents.
