Eleven young elephants found dead near Zimbabwe’s biggest game park may have succumbed to a bacterial infection, the country's parks agency said on Tuesday, after it ruled out poaching and cyanide poisoning. The elephant carcasses were discovered last Friday in Pandamasuwe Forest in western Zimbabwe, between Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls. The mysterious deaths came after Botswana reported the death of more than 200 elephants in June. Columbus Chaitezvi, principal veterinary officer at the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) said that, following preliminary tests, the agency suspected the elephants could have contracted a deadly bacterial infection while searching for food. As the country enters the hot summer season, food becomes scarce and younger elephants tend to eat grass and burrow into the soil, exposing themselves to bacteria, he said. "So far the laboratory indication is that it's a bacteria infection but we don't know what kind of bacteria it is," Chaitezvi told Reuters. Zimparks spokesman Tinashe Farawo said the dead were aged between five and six years and less than 18 months. "You can see that those young ones can't reach for tree tops, so they end up eating anything, which in some cases can be poisonous," said Farawo. Chris Foggin, whose Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust laboratory is helping with testing samples and also previously tested samples from Botswana, said so far there were no similarities between the elephant deaths in the two countries. At least 200 elephants have died in Zimbabwe's wildlife parks due to lack of food and water, along with scores of buffalo and antelope, since a devastating drought in 2019. Zimparks officials say the biggest threat to Zimbabwe's elephants is overpopulation and that lower rainfall this year could again leave the animals facing starvation. Zimbabwe is home to some 80,000 elephants, around a fifth of Africa's total, conservationists estimate. Overall numbers have declined sharply in recent years, mostly due to a combination of poaching, illegal hunting and drought. source: https://insidenaija.com.ng/zimbabwe-elephants-may-have-died-of-bacteria-infectionphoto/

ASUU also said that Universities clamoring for the re-opening of Nigeria Universities are those serving as cash cows to some governments. The Union Described the Federal Goverment action as suicidal, warning that it should be ready for any possible negative consequences following its plan to reopen tertiary institutions. The Coordinator of ASUU Calabar zone, Dr Aniekan Brown of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Uyo (UNIUYO) who made the assertion while briefing newsmen today in Uyo, stressed the need for members of the public to know that it was unreasonable to contemplate re-opening universities. In another development, the Coordinator of ASUU Lagos zone, Prof. Olusiji Sowande, while briefing newsmen at a press conference held at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, accused the Federal Government of arranging special bailout funds for airline operators and other private entities but did not extend the same arrangement to public universities. He said there are not adequate accommodations, no facitilites on ground to check physical distancing in large and crowded classes. Sowande, father stressed that there is no reliable supply of light and water in the universities. He said that that years of neglect of both the education and health sectors in the country has resulted in inadequate infrastructure and lack of well equipped diagnostic, testing, treatment, and research laboratories in both sectors. Sowande said “The response of the public universities to the call by the National University Commission for their readiness to reopen indicated that public universities are not ready. “Presently, hostel accommodations are inadequate, no facility on the ground to carry out physical distancing in large and crowded classes, water and electricity supply are not reliable, etc. “Reopening tertiary institutions without taking concrete steps to address these issues would be suicidal. While the government made arrangements for special bailout funds for airline operators and other private entities, no such arrangement was made for public universities. ” Therefore, the government should be ready to take responsibility for any possible negative consequences after the reopening of universities.” Speaking on the ongoing strike, Sowande said the union had written to relevant government agencies with a view to finding steps to putting an end to the industrial action. He said “It seems to us that some government officials are benefiting from the prevailing situation. Lionel Messi's father is reportedly in England discussing terms with Manchester City for the Argentine playmaker. This comes a day after the six-time Ballon d'Or winner informed the club that he does not want to continue under new coach Ronald Koeman following Barcelona's embarrassing 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and disappointing season in Spain which resulted in no trophies. According to RAC1 and TyC Sports, Jorge Messi has already touched down in Manchester to discuss terms with the Premier League side. The reports say that the player's father who is also his agent is discussing a two-year deal with City, despite a reported disagreement between Barcelona and Lionel Messi over his £630million release clause at the club. Before Messi made his decision to leave the club, he held crunch talks with new coach Ronald Koeman following the Dutchman's appointment as Quique Setien's replacement last week. In their discussions, Messi made his decision clear to leave the club while the new manager told him his "privileges" were over. Messi, whose deal runs out in 2021, believes a clause in his contract means he can leave as a free agent this summer. But Barcelona are insisting that the clause expired in June, which would mean either Messi or City would have to pay his £630million release clause at the club. A move to Manchester City would see Messi reunite with ex-Barcelona coach Guardiola in England. During his illustrious playing career at the Camp Nou, Messi won an astonishing 10 La Liga titles, six Copa del Reys, seven Spanish Super Cups, and four Champions League. source: https://insidenaija.com.ng/messis-father-in-england-negotiating-2-years-deal-with-mancity/ |
