Sad isn't it, the way we allow our valuable things to be violated, discarded and then forgotten.

the sad thing beneli, many africans don't know about timbuktu. they brought into the idea mainly coming from europe that africans culture is only oral and relegated to singing and tribal dancing. needless to say, from their perspective the only african cultures that have merit is nile valley area or sometimes ethiopia, if they consider those countries as black. however, from the perspective of westerners and some africans alike, sub saharan africa is devoid of any past intellectual culture, but relegated to dancing, singing, primitive tribalism and superstitions. that is the image most outsiders have toward sub saharan africa.

To ezeagu: Somali/Ethiopian clusters", "Negroid features", "mixed types", I would think you people were eyeing goats to be bought in a market.

i will reserve my comments that many northern sudanese and egyptians say about yours, because at the end of the day i know it is utter ignorance similar to your statement which is utter ignorance. interesting, "eyeing goats to be brought in the market" are you confusing us with your local fulan and tuaregs in your far north. i am sorry to disappoint you we are different people. however, i met some najia fulan in egypt great people, and he always had something positive to say about each ethnicity in najia. he represented your country well, and your "mix types" statement, do you have a inferiority complex or something. indeed, i really don't understand your meaning?

King Ezana Stele in Aksum Ethiopia probably builted around the 4 or early AD, this is the period in ethiopia when they converted to christianity before most european countries, the only countries they became majority christian during that time was probably, armenia, greece, maybe egypt and rome. however, i think egypt and ethiopia became christian nearly the same time, and i understand nubia later followed during the 5th century.

this is one of my favorites above all else even though many people will consider this simple glassware. however, from my perspective this drinking glass is not only beautiful and it is my favorite color darkblue, but it is timeless. it looks very modern.
this glass is dated during the late meroitic period in around 250-300 AD, this was found in one of the pyramids in meroe. some of the glasses is now house at the museum in khartoum in sudan and university of pisa in italy.

http://www.fotosearch.com/bigcomp.asp?path=ICN/ICN002/F0020609.jpg : simple but it is my favorite, because the glassware is timeless. the writing of the glassware is actually greek, which means the meroites and greeks were trading varies different items during that time.

the translation from the glass, "Drink and you shall live" they would break the glass as a sign of luck.this is interesting because breaking glass is actually a Jewish custom, I think. Is it originally middle eastern?
The cup reminds me of ancient Greek glassware btw[/b].ababha: sorry i did not answer this question weeks ago, however i don't know where that custom come from because it is not done today in the nile valley, but that does not means it was not done in the past. however, there have been a good deal of cultural exchange between the ancient meroites and the mediterranean world. for example take the simple name as candace. do you know the name candace was actually a title for nubian or meroitic queens. the name is actually a title similar to pharaoh or caesar, but only for queens. however, the real pronunicaton is kdke, which means queen mother. many african societies share this queen mother concept especially the ashantis and some mande peoples in west africa

ruined church of Qasr Ibrim in lower nubia. it was builted around the 6th century AD. however new finding suggest that the church was builted over a ancient temple dedicated to the goddess isis and the nubian pharaoh that is mentioned in the old testament in the bible taharka.

This is the only reliable source I can find and its just a tiny paragraph

that was interesting ezeagu, and yes that was indeed a tiny paragraph to say the least. there should be further study for your country heritage. in sudan, we have archeologist all over the world flooding our country monuments while at the same time discovering different pyramids or old cities. people should be doing the same in nigeria.
