Politics / 2010 Budget: Villa Votes N0.5bn For Generator Fuel by abasifo(m): 10:18am On Jan 06, 2010
2010 Budget: Villa votes N0.5bn for generator fuel – Daily Trust
November 25, 2009 by Bunmi Awolusi
Four days after Vice President Goodluck Jonathan promised that no Nigerian will use power generators next year, the Presidency itself proposes to spend N542.4 million in the 2010 Federal budget to purchase and fuel power generating plants.
This much was contained in the N4.07 trillion 2010 budget bill that President Umaru Yar’adua’s Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Mohammed Abba Aji, laid before the two chambers of National Assembly in Abuja yesterday. Speaking at the launching of the new Peugeot 307 Sedan in Kaduna last Friday, Jonathan responded to the complaints by Peugeot Automobile’s chairman about permanent dependence on generators by saying no Nigerian will depend on generators next year.
A copy of the draft budget bill obtained by Daily Trust however showed that President Yar’adua’s abode at the State House, Aso Rock Villa alone intends to spend N82m on the maintenance of plants and generators, an indication that the State House does not believe that power supply will be stable next year.
Another N100m is proposed in the budget for the provision of Uninterrupted Power Supply [UPS] machines at the Vice President’s official residence and new administrative block at the Presidential Villa to take care of incessant power cut. Apart from the Presidential Villa, the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and agencies under it have also been provided with another N310 million for the purchase of power generating plants and the cost of fuelling them.

Jarus:

Ever bought a fufu phone before?

In one makeshift stand in those rough parts of Lagos, you price a phone, examine it and pay for it. But in the process of packing it for you, the phone you priced will be exchanged for a fufu moulded into phone, and neatly carved, and packed into the phone case. On getting home, you will realize a fufu has been sold for you as phone. No trace of seller again.

Only in my dear Lagos!!!!

Religion / Fast And Pray For Nigeria by abasifo(m): 3:24pm On Sep 24, 2009
Daddy GO invites you to Fast and Pray for Nigeria
From September 28th to October 4th 2009

Here is an extract from the message delievered by Daddy GO, Pastor E. A. Adeboye at September 2009 HGS on the need to fast and pray for Nigeria.

"As many of you know, October 1st is a very important day in Nigeria; Independence Day, Republic Day. I want to call on all of you to fast and pray for Nigeria.

The prayer and fasting will be in two categories; seven days single, that is, you will break by 6pm, beginning from September 28th to 4th October 2009. Please take note of that.

Fast and Pray for Nigeria, breaking by 6pm. Seven is a number of perfection.

In-between those seven days, I want to call on those of us who are spiritually matured (Pastors, Ministers and others Spiritually matured) beginning form September 29 - 3rd of October, I want those who are spiritually matured to fast continually, five days and five nights. If you are going to do the five days, then don't bother about the seven days.

Take note of how you are going to pray; Before October 1st you will just be thanking God, for all the troubles the Lord has taking us through, keep on thanking God.

On October the 1st we will all beg God for forgiveness, either as a result of religious crises, Niger delta, whatever, we will ask God for mercy, forgiveness, for every evil that have been done in Nigeria.

After October 1st we will then call on God to arise and scatter the enemies of Nigeria, Enemies within, enemies without, enemies known and unknown, that the almighty God should arise and fight for this nation.

Now lift your hand to the almighty God and just bless Him, The Lord will bless you, He will keep you, He will fight for you, He will stand by you, He will let your joy to be over flow.

You will never forget tonight for Good, even as the sun rises tomorrow, your miracle will begin, you will never lack again, you will never be barren again, you will never have any cause to weep again, you will never have fruitless effort again.

God will take you higher day by day, God will accept your offering, and you will never lack again, you will never borrow again, so shall it be and in the Kingdom of God, you will not be found wanting, in Jesus name."

Let me hear somebody shout halleluiah!
Thanks always for your prayers and support. We appreciate you.

Romance / Re: Is It Right For A Lady To Propose To A Guy? by abasifo(m): 1:34pm On Sep 17, 2009
Ladies, are you tired of waiting around for your man to propose? Society says that it is the man’s responsibility to take the first step. But really, what are you waiting for? Break the mold and get what you want…the ring! And of course, the man. Here are some ways that you can propose to a man.
The first thing you need to do is put society’s viewpoints on the back burner. If you really want to marry this man but he is taking his time in broaching the subject, gather up your courage and ask for his hand in marriage. If you two are meant for each other, you will get your wish.
All of the emotions that a man goes through when he is getting ready to propose hold true for women. Asking for someone to marry you is a scary question filled with either acceptance or rejection. Since you should know your partner pretty well, take a gander at what his response would be. Some men do not feel comfortable with the woman proposing and this could make things very uncomfortable.
If your man is a Renaissance man, he may be open to the woman proposing. If so, move forward. Your proposal should be a memorable occasion. Create an environment that you will both enjoy and have fond memories of. Perhaps you have a favorite restaurant or park that you like to go to.
Take a trip to your favorite location, slowly approach the subject. Talk about all the wonderful things you love about him and how he completes you. Remember to talk from the heart. So many times we use pre-written speeches but this can sound contrived. Look deep into his eyes, grab him by the hands and pop the question. If you are the type that likes a little flair, get down on one knee much as he would have done. Smile honestly at him the entire time. It will show that you are confident and sure in your decision.
So, if you’ve been waiting for that ring for eternity and your man doesn’t seem to be making a move, if the time is right, go for it. There’s no reason that a lady can’t go after what she wants.

Crime / Nigerian Man Killed His Only Son For Been Sturborn by abasifo(m): 11:24am On Sep 17, 2009
Nigerian Man killed his only son for been sturborn, ends boys life and dream, he also forgot that the boy is a photocopy of he his father.

A father in Lagos, Friday Obot who hails from Akwa Ibom State, has murdered his only son, Michael, 11, for losing the toilet door bolt. Another reason cited for the abominable act was Michael’s alleged stubbornness. The incident occurred in, Awolowo Way area of Ikeja. “He had repeatedly told Michael that he was going to kill him,” the grieving mother, Mercy told Daily Sun in tears.

Problem was said to have started on Thursday, September 10, 2009, when Michael misplaced the toilet door bolt.
Daily Sun gathered since the victim lost the bolt his father had made life miserable for him, as it had always been battering, scolding and threats from him.

“But I intervened and asked him to forget it, as we can always replace it. Michael lost confidence and trust in his father, as he was always beating and harassing him, even over matters he would have ordinarily ignored,” she wept profusely.
She narrated how her husband raised the issue of the missing bolt again, when she returned from the market and how she tactfully tried to change the topic. Midway into their discussions, she said her husband suddenly reverted to the lost bolt and continued the threat.

“For fear of what the father might do to him, Michael ran out of the house and slept with a cart pusher (mallam) who lives opposite our room. But on Saturday, September 12, 2009, the father of two allegedly went to where his son was taking refuge, dragged him out and later into his room.

The victim’s little sister, Blessing, who witnessed the incident, disclosed to the mother how her father used pestle, including machete, to torture her brother, to the point that he could no longer walk. As he was weeping, Blessing said Michael requested for water to drink, a request she said, their father turned down.
It was when Obot went to buy some packs of Indomie that Michael tried to sneak out of the house of torture to escape, but collapsed as a result of the torture. “That was when they came to call me from the market. We rushed him to the hospital but he was rejected and referred him to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

Michael was given two drips and he passed out as he was taking the third one.
Obot’s landlord, Mr. Obadina Simeon, who said the victim had been living in his house for the past years, described him as cafeteria worker. He told Daily Sun that he (landlord) reported the murder case to the Area ‘F’ Police Command, Ikeja.

The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer (DPPRO), Mr. Onyeisi Nwaolai, who confirmed the incident said the case had been transferred to the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos

Politics / This Was How Tb Joshua Predicted Gani Fawehinmi's Death by abasifo(m): 8:16am On Sep 16, 2009
The news of legendary lawyer Gani Fawehinmi's Death shocked Nigeria, but a Nigerian Pastor with a remarkable prophetic pedigree, had seen it almost a month earlier,

On Sunday 9th August, 2009, Prophet T.B. Joshua relayed a unique vision to the congregation of The Synagogue, Church of All Nations. “This morning I woke up and the Lord was telling me I should pray for this person in a graduation gown, with a cap,” he said. “He must be a well known, he must be a very, very popular person. The fact that God can bring this issue to me – he must be well known. What has happened? When the person died, they took the picture of graduation gown to show on the screen. Who is the person? Somebody at the centre of his own world.” In a subsequent service, he expanded further details of the vision, this time specifying the day Saturday. “On Saturday, pray for protection for this hero. He is struggling with some certain things known to him and God. But I am seeing death.”

On Saturday the 5th September 2009, Gani Fawehinmi the legendary Nigerian human rights lawyer and activist died following a two year struggle with lung cancer. As news of his passing swept throughout Nigeria and beyond, local television outlets broadcast various pictures of Fawehinmi dressed in his official gown and cap, evidently the clothing TB Joshua alluded to in his vision. Thousands trooped to his official residence to pay their last respects to the late legal luminary, writing condolences in a journal underneath a large framed portrait of the lawyer clad in gown and cap, the attire he donned to fearlessly and tirelessly pursue the cause of justice, liberty and equality for all.

Described as 'The People's President' and 'The Conscience of Nigeria', Gani spent his life campaigning for the restoration of rights for the Nigerian public, daring to defy anyone who stood in his path. Gani was a constant thorn in the flesh for corrupt government officials, arrested and imprisoned on numerous occasions for his uncompromising, tenacious and outspoken stance against crooked practices within government circles. His supporters called him "the scourge of irresponsible governments, a sphygmomanometer with which the blood pressure of dictators is gauged, the veritable conscience of the nation and the champion of the interests and causes of the masses", Gani is clearly a man whose life and legacy are worthy of the heroic status referred to in the prophet's utterances.

With his seemingly boundless energy, Gani boldly pursued and crusaded his beliefs, principles and ideals for the untrammelled rule of law and undiluted democracy, spearheading the call for protection of fundamental human rights and respect for the hopes and aspirations of the masses, often victims of the mismanagement of the Nigerian government. Gani did not deem neutrality as even optional. "I am not a middle-of-the road man,” he said. “What I believe in, I pursue intensely.” He wholeheartedly believed that if you have not found a cause worthy of dying for, you have not really lived.

Since his death, tributes have poured in from far and wide, presidential aspirant Pat Utomi saying: “Gani Fawehinmi belonged in a class of his own. Selfless, visionary and dogged, even in the face of enormous personal risk, so long as the cause advanced the common good, he was not a man to shy from truth or fear inconvenience.” Even former Nigerian president Ibrahim Babangida, who arrested Gani several times during his military regime, said of the activist: “Chief Gani Fawehinmi needs to be celebrated not just by members of his human rights community but by all Nigerians who have benefited from his struggles and battles to make life meaningful for mankind.”

Prophet TB Joshua's prophetic ministry continues to draw a growing number of viewers to Emmanuel TV, baffled by the uncanny consistency of his words and works. In a generation without faith and hope, people are desperately seeking evidence of Christ's reality and power, tired of mere words within religious circles. The ministry of TB Joshua certainly provides such.

102-year-old woman stops smoking - after 95 years!
15 September 2009

She lit her first cigarette as the lights were going out over Europe at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
Since then, the Daily Mail reports, she has reached for her trusty Player’s Navy Blue (or, latterly, Embassy) through the ups and downs of all the following decades.
Until now.
At the astonishing age of 102, Winne Langley says she has kicked the habit after 95 years because she "didn’t fancy it any more".
Mrs Langley reckons she hasn’t contracted cancer because she does not inhale.
The former laundrette worker, who lives in Croydon, South London, said since her first puff in 1914, she has averaged five cigarettes a day, giving a total of more than 170,000 in her lifetime.

Politics / Gani Fawehimi Biography by abasifo(m): 3:12pm On Sep 10, 2009
Chief Abdul-Ganiyu "Gani" Oyesola Fawehinmi is a Nigerian author, publisher, philanthropist, social critic, human and civil rights lawyer and Politician.
His supporters have called him "the scourge of irresponsible governments, a thermometer with which the blood pressure of dictators is gauged, the veritable conscience of the nation and the champion of the interests and causes of the masses".

Fawehinmi, popularly called Gani, was born on 22 April 1938, into the Fawehinmi family of Ondo, in Ondo State.

Chief Gani was called to the Nigerian Bar on the 15th of January, 1965.

In 1993 Fawehinmi was awarded the biennial Bruno Kreisky Prize. This prize, named in honour of Bruno Kreisky, is awarded to international figures who advance human rights causes. In 1998, he received the International Bar Association's Bernard Simmons Award in recognition of his human-rights and pro-democracy work. In 1994 he and some other notable Nigerians formed the National Conscience Party of Nigeria which exists till today and he stood for a presidential election in 2003 under the umbrella of the National Conscience Party.

Gani Fawehinmi became a holder of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) the highest legal title in Nigeria in September, 2001.

Gani is not everything to everybody. You either like him passionately or you hate him intensely. This is because of his boundless and sometimes suicidal energy with which he tenaciously and uncompromisingly pursues and crusades his beliefs, principles and ideals for the untrammelled rule of law, undiluted democracy, all embracing and expansive social justice, protection of fundamental human rights and respect for the hopes and aspirations of the masses who are victims of misgovernance of the affairs of the Nation.

As a result of his activities along these lines, he was arrested, detained, charged to court several times. His international passport was seized on many occasions. His residence and Chambers were crudely searched several times. He was beaten up many times and was deported from one part of the country to another to prevent him from being listened to by the masses. Some of his books which the Federal Military Government did not like were confiscated and one of his houses at Surulere where the books were kept was about to be set ablaze when the would be perpetrators were caught and apprehended by neighbors. Even his Chambers at Anthony Village, Lagos State, was violently attacked and invaded by persons suspected to be government security men on 26 August 1994 and they shot at the Chambers guard, seriously wounding two of them.

He has been a very strong pillar in Nigeria's journey towards a fair democracy and is still an important figure in the nations politics till today.
Crime / Thomas Mcgowan, Who Was Released Last Year After Nearly 23 Years In Prison, Will by abasifo(m): 3:59pm On Sep 08, 2009
Thomas McGowan, who was released last year after nearly 23 years in prison, will be paid $1.8 million because he was Wrongly convicted.

DALLAS - Thomas McGowan's journey from prison to prosperity is about to culminate in $1.8 million, and he knows just how to spend it: on a house with three bedrooms, stainless steel kitchen appliances and a washer and dryer.

"I'll let my girlfriend pick out the rest," said McGowan, who was exonerated last year based on DNA evidence after spending nearly 23 years in prison for rape and robbery.

He and other exonerees in Texas, which leads the nation in freeing the wrongly convicted, soon will become instant millionaires under a new state law that took effect this week.

Exonerees will get $80,000 for each year they spent behind bars. The compensation also includes lifetime annuity payments that for most of the wrongly convicted are worth between $40,000 and $50,000 a year — making it by far the nation's most generous package.

"I'm nervous and excited," said McGowan, 50. "It's something I never had, this amount of money. I didn't have any money — period."

His payday for his imprisonment — a time he described as "a nightmare," "hell" and "slavery" — should come by mid-November after the state's 45-day processing period.

Exonerees also receive an array of social services, including job training, tuition credits and access to medical and dental treatment. Though 27 other states have some form of compensation law for the wrongly convicted, none comes close to offering the social services and money Texas provides.

Financial advisers available
The annuity payments are especially popular among exonerees, who acknowledge their lack of experience in managing personal finances. A social worker who meets with the exonerees is setting them up with financial advisers and has led discussions alerting them to swindlers.

The annuities are "a way to guarantee these guys , payments for life as long as they follow the law," said Kevin Glasheen, a Lubbock attorney representing a dozen exonerees.

Two who served about 26 years in prison for rape will receive lump sums of about $2 million apiece. Another, Steven Phillips, who spent about 24 years in prison for sexual assault and burglary, will get about $1.9 million.

The biggest compensation package will likely go to James Woodard, who spent more than 27 years in prison for a 1980 murder that DNA testing later showed he did not commit. He eventually could receive nearly $2.2 million but first needs a writ from the state's Court of Criminal Appeals or a pardon from the governor.

McGowan and the others are among 38 DNA exonerees in Texas, according to the Innocence Project, a New York legal center that specializes in overturning wrongful convictions. Dallas County alone has 21 cases in which a judge overturned guilty verdicts based on DNA evidence, though prosecutors plan to retry one of those.

Charles Chatman, who was wrongly convicted of rape, said the money will allow him some peace of mind after more than 26 years in prison.

"It will bring me some independence," he said. "Other people have had a lot of control over my life."

From new businesses to new babies
Chatman and other exonerees already have begun rebuilding their lives. Several plan to start businesses, saying they don't mind working but want to be their own bosses. Others, such as McGowan, don't intend to work and hope to make their money last a lifetime.

Education / Reason Why Lagos State Student Battle With The Nigerian Police Force. by abasifo(m): 3:41pm On Sep 08, 2009
Reason Why Lagos State Student Battle With the Nigerian Police Force.

The crisis in the Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos, became pronounced, on Monday, as students battled men of the Nigerian police to prevent the vice-chancellor, Professor Lateef Hussein, from entering the university.

The students, led by their president, Mr. Leke Bakare, had blocked the entrance and exit gates of the university to prevent the vice-chancellor, who was to report to his office from doing so.

However, in its effort to curb the protest, the Divisional Police Headquarters, Area E Command, Ojo, directed its men to intervene.

As at 9.00a.m, it was observed that about 500 policemen with two armored tanks had been positioned at the main gate.

Speaking to the Nigerian Tribune, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), of the Students Union , Mr. Agboola Seriki, said that the police had arrested about 20 students, adding that the union would not stop the protest until their members are released.

When a Girl wants to see you everyday, she wants to be pampered.
