Temporary marriage licenses The world is really turning into something else, Temporary, just like drivers licenses, how will people now take this kind of vow, I guess we’ll be hearing something like “Till four years do us part” or “Till you are broke” or “Till you cheat on me”. The left-leaning assembly is studying a new initiative to introduce temporary marriage licenses that would expire after two years if the couple so desires. The proposal, intended to reduce the bureaucratic costs and emotional toll of divorce, has garnered as many fans as foes: Some see it as a pragmatic alternative, while others, including the Roman Catholic Church, see it as an attack on family values. It comes as Mexico grapples with its own culture war in the world’s second-largest Catholic country. “The centrality of family in Mexico is changing,” says Norma Ojeda, a sociologist at the San Diego State University who has studied the evolution of marriage in Mexico since the 1970s. “That is something that is part of a global social change in many countries.” To its authors, the proposal reflects social changes in Mexico City, where they say most divorces occur in the first two years. If after two years, couples decide to until “death do us part,” they can renew their licenses. If not, the proposal specifies how children and property are handled. “The proposal is, when the two-year period is up, if the relationship is not stable or harmonious, the contract simply ends,” Leonel Luna, the assemblyman who co-wrote the bill, told Reuters. “You wouldn’t have to go through the tortuous process of divorce.” http://nokiaappwizard.com/mip/pct.jsp?p=411057798_435698&wl=4 Source: yahoo News |

African champions Super Falcons of Nigeria will not feature in next year’s Olympics after they lost to their Cameroonian counterparts 4-3 on penalties after aggregate scores stood at 3-3 Saturday. Nigeria 2-1 advantage from the first clash in August was overturned by a similar 2-1 win by 2011 African Games Gold medallists Saturday inside the Ahmadu Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde. Cameroon opened scoring after 32 minutes before they doubled their lead on 40 minutes when defender Ohale Osinachi caused a penalty and was sent off. However, Perpetua Nkwocha pulled a goal back for Nigeria in the closing moments of the encounter. Extra time of 30 minutes failed to produce any more goals. In the resulting penalty shootout, Cameroon triumphed 4-3 with experienced defender Faith Ikidi missing the final kick for Nigeria. This will be the first time Nigeria’s women will not feature at the Olympics since 2000. Interestingly, the Falcons bashed Cameroon 5-1 last year in the African Women’s Championship in South Africa on their way to a sixth continental crown. Cameroon, who took the place of disqualified Equatorial Guinea, now join Bayana Bayana of South Africa to represent Africa at the 2012 London Olympics. http://www.mtnfootball.com/africa/nigeria/news/2011/oct/22-falcons-crash-out-of-olympics.html |
Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has issued an apology to Nigerians after the Super Eagles drew 2-2 against Guinea to miss out on the 2012 African Nations Cup. "We want to apologise to all Nigerians. "We have not qualified for the Nations Cup and we take responsibility as a team," Siasia said. "We did our best, we dominated the game, we created chances, but we failed to take our chances and we gave up a last minute goal. "We understand the frustration of the fans because they love their team so much. But sometimes, football can be cruel." Nigeria finished on 11 points, which was not enough to finish as one of two best runners up. http://channelstv.com/global/news_details.php?nid=29611&cat=Sports |

No doubt, Nollywood is full of haters and secret enemies, an ugly trend that is fast turning the entire industry into a battle field. We exclusively brings you the shocking list of who hates who in Nollywood as well as reasons for the unending animosity. The duo of Emeka Ike and Segun Arinze, will forever top the list of warring gladiators in Nollywood. Their age-long beef was further fuelled by the battle for the control of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). Ike has never accepted Arinze as the national president of the troubled guild. He even went to the court to contest the former’s victory, which he claimed was illegal and fraudulent. The war took another dimension when Ike declared himself the factional president of AGN. Several concerted efforts at reconciling both famous entertainers have always failed with their animosity still raging like a volcanic eruption. Nollywood star actresses, Oby Edozieh and Tricia Esieigbe are leading the pack of the female gladiators in Nollywood. The former best pals are now sworn enemies with visible anger and hatred for each other. They have equally taken their never-ending war severally to the pages of newspapers and magazines. After resting for a few years, they recently commenced their war of words a couple of weeks ago, with accusations and counter accusations. Unknown to many of their teeming fans, sexy and stylish screen divas, Monalisa Chinda and Rita Dominic are currently engaged in a fierce cold war. The war of the former best pals dates back to when Monalisa was still married. An insider hinted EE that they now avoid each other like a plague whenever their paths crossed in public places, especially locations and corporate events. Veteran Nollywood actors Ejike Asiegbu and Kanayo O. Kanayo are currently co-habiting in Nollywood like cat and mouse. In fact, authentic information at our disposal has it that they hardly see face-to-face at any Nollywood event. Their cold war became open when the former accused the latter of conniving with some unscrupulous elements to remove him from office as the then national president of AGN. A move that later failed. Several pleas from concerned friends and colleagues of the duo to sheathe their swords proved abortive. Surprisingly, the latter was the former’s best man during his wedding. London-based Nollywood actress Chioma Toplis and Oge Okoye have not stopped washing their dirty linens in public since their “special friendship” collapsed like packs of poorly arranged cards. Their war became messier when Toplis accused Oge of damaging appliances and messing up her London apartment whenever she comes visiting and warned her to stop invading her privacy with the choking visits. Nollywood bad boy, Jim Iyke and Emeka Ike are still threatening fire and brimstone over an age-long altercation that nearly turned fatal on set, if not for some divine intervention. About-to-wed actress Mercy Johnson has recently added comic star Victor Osuagwu to her long list of enemies. Mercy transferred the hate syndrome to Victor for advising her on the controversial union holding tomorrow. Now, they no longer see eyeball-to-eyeball. Famous Yoruba actress Iyabo Ojo is currently locked in a battle with emerging star, Lizzy Anjorin. Iyabo has allegedly vowed to teach Lizzy the lesson of her life for daring to disrespect and call her by name in public. For peace to reign supreme, she wants ‘recalcitrant’ Lizzy to always address her as “Auntie mi.” Last on our warring long list is the duo Vivian Ejike and Emem Isong. Both leading film producers were former best friends and business partners until the centre could no longer hold and things started falling apart. Jealousy and greed were mentioned as the root cause of their open animosity. http://www.nigeriafilms.com/news/13356/6/who-hates-who-in-nollywood.html |
Reactions trail Aikkomu’s death on AUGUST 17, 2011 · in NEWS By Simon Ebegbulem Reactions have continued to trail the death of former Chief of General Staff and military Vice-President Augustus Aikhomu, who died Wednesday, in Lagos. Chief John Oyegun, first executive Governor of Edo State, “We have had more than our fair share of deaths in our state, we lost Enahoro, then the governor’s wife and now we are talking of a prominent Nigerian in Aikhomu. It is really tragic, very difficult to believe, I know he was ill but I never knew it will lead to death, it is quite painful. My heartfelt sympathy to his family, his wife and children. He contributed to the development of the nation both as a military man and a politician. He is one of the elder statesmen of both the state and the entire country. I don’t know what is happening to our medical facilities in this country. Senator Rowland Stephen Owie, former Chief Whip of the senate “It’s a disaster. He was a great Nigerian. Very very detribalized Nigerian. He is a man that says the truth always. He was my national leader in ANPP. His death is devastating to all of us. I spoke to him a week and half ago and he was sounding very healthy. We give God the glory. Its symbolic that he died on the birthday of Ibrahim Babangida his boss. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Chief Tom Ikimi He was my best friend. I spoke to him last week in London; I told him I was coming to London to visit him. His death is a monumental loss to our country and the state in particular. He is a very dependable and reliable person. His contributions to the development and stability of our country cannot be quantified. He made significant contributions to the end of the civil war. He was the commander of the Nigerian flag ship NNS Nigeria. He was an unblemished naval officer. I won’t be able to say much now be later because I am bereaved. Chief Dan Orbih, Edo state PDP Chairman A great Nigerian. A man of peace, leader, diplomat and a statesman. May his Gentle Soul rest in peace. Gen. Charles Airhiavbere It is a sad day for the military and Nigerians in general. I cannot tell you how shocked I am. It is a sad news for all of us. An intelligent man, politician and a man of truth. Those of us in the military know his worth. So his demise is a big blow to the Nigerian Armed forces and Edo people in particular. May his Gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Pastor Paul Toun, General Overseer, Evangel Pentecostal Church, Okota, Lagos Based on the reports published in the newspapers, if it is true that the man in question at any point is legally married to this woman in a court, in addition to the marriage, they were blessed with two kids and the marriage has not been dissolved by any person, based on scriptural authority and the laws of the land, no church, no Christian should wed them. The only church that will wed them is ignoring the fact. If these claims are true, the church that weds them will destroy itself; the reputation of the church would be put to shame because they are disobedient and in disregard of the scripture and also the laws of the land. Looking at it from the scriptural basis, divorce in itself is not permitted. God never intended divorce. If you also go to the scripture like Malachi 2 Vs 14, God says that marriage is a covenant and covenant is not a contract - contract can be broken, covenant is eternal because God is eternal; just because husband and wife has a quarrel is not an excuse for divorce. If they both want to rush into the marriage, the only thing they can do is traditional wedding. Even if they do that it is still illegal, So, I don’t think Mercy Johnson is getting married on the said date. However, if the facts are right that the other woman and the man were previously just co-habiting, there is nothing to stop the man’s marriage to Mercy Johnson. Rev. Michael Samuel Evans, Pastor, Potters House, Texas, US Marriage is of God and the devil is always against it. My question is; are these people born again? If they are not born again, I don’t think any church should join them in the first place because people who are born again and also have the fear of God will not venture into such an act. It is a shame these days that people go into a union without knowing each other well. For the actress, I just feel she should do her findings well before she goes into the wedding, otherwise, it would get messier. Apostle Anselm Madubuko, General Overseer, Revival Assembly Church Actress Mercy Johnson should pray before going on to wed the man. Marriage is a strong institution that can never be rushed into. She should seek for counseling now before the matter gets messier. Olumide Emmanuel, Senior Pastor, Calvary Bible Lovely’s allegation is a serious one that should not be ignored but verified. Are they separated or divorced? My advice for Mercy will be to investigate before investing her life, because in marriage love is not enough and she should not allow her emotion overrules her sense of reasoning. If the man is legally divorced and she is sure with evidences, then that will be a different issue. If the foundation of her marriage is already generating this kind of controversy, she should look before leaping and be sure she has divine approval to go on. Pastor Olusola Fabunmi, New York I read somewhere on the Internet that the marriage with Lovely and the man, Odion had broken down years before now. And that was why he relocated to Nigeria while the lady relocated to Canada from Italy. If truly they are still married, do you think they could be so separated for a long time? Also, from my observations on how Nigerian ladies treat their spouses in Western countries, like US, UK, Canada and other European nations because of the laws there which, favour women above men could be so ridiculous. So, I think somewhere along the line, the man might have relocated to Nigeria out of frustrations. My experience as a pastor affords me the first hand information on how African ladies treat their spouses having relocated to these nations. However, I think Lovely is just out to spoil the guy’s happiness having discovered that he is about to marry a more popular and probably fancier lady than her. But only God knows the hidden truth. Having said all these, I would counsel the church to put the wedding on hold; invite the two parties and ask for evidences for their claims and counter claims and then make their decisions from that. If they are still married, let them present the evidence. If the marriage had been dissolved, let them present the evidence too. After all, the bible said we should search all things and hold on to that which is the truth. This is my opinion. Putting the wedding on hold for a week and inviting the parties to present all evidences to their claims won’t hurt anyone and will afford them the opportunity to prove their claims beyond any reasonable doubts or not. Princess Anne Inyang, Praise and Worship pastor My candid opinion is that if the guy did not tell Mercy Johnson before now that he had been married before and that they were separated before he met her, then he was hiding it from her. If she is as surprised as anyone else, then she will be making the greatest mistake of her life if she still goes ahead to marry him because that means he was still legally married. Marriage is about trust and there is no proper love without trust. From the publications in the newspapers, it is evident that there was a marriage contract between Lovely and the guy. The bone of contention is whether they were still legally married when he met and proposed to Mercy or not. My advice to Mercy is that she should just cool off for now, she does not need negative vibes to start a marriage. Pastor Dennis Inyang, General Overseer, Sure Word Assembly If the Lady’s claim is true, that obviously invalidates Mercy’s plans to marry the same man. Under such circumstance, no church should accept to wed them. Pastor Ayo Owoborode, Pastor Christ Embassy. Ife, Osun State There are some questions that should be asked on this matter. I mean questions like; did the man separate or divorce the first woman? Because I know there is a difference between separation and divorce. And is Mercy aware of the man’s past relationship? How long has Mercy and the man been courting? Have they gone through marriage counseling class in the church they intend to wed? Have they sought the face of God about the union? I think if Mercy and the man can answer these questions, then we can have a way forward. If these questions are not answered properly, then no church should wed them. http://www.nigeriafilms.com/news/13128/42/mercy-johnson-men-of-god-say-no-its-not-proper.html |

GTBank Customers Can Now Make Deposit Through ATM GTBank customers are now a class apart from their counterparts in other banks as Interswitch Nigeria, a leading electronic payment transaction and switching firm, has empowered them to make cash deposits through some designated ATMs. The project, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria, will enable cash deposits through GTBank ATMs without inserting or using a debit card. The cardless ATM cash deposit solution from Interswitch can be accessed on certain GTBank cardless ATMs by clicking the enter button on the machine, which prompts the customer to key in the details of the account to be credited. The ATM then requests for a confirmation of the account number and account name of the beneficiary. Once confirmed, the customer inserts the amount to be deposited, the ATM counts the cash and credits the beneficiary’s account immediately. The cardless ATM cash deposit solution allows a GTBank customer to deposit a bundle of different naira denominations and the ATM will sort through the different denominations. Once sorted, the ATM displays the amount according to the different denominations and also the total amount deposited. The ATM cash deposit solution has the ability to validate the account of the beneficiary, allowing the depositor to confirm or correct any error. The deposited amount reflects in the beneficiary account, and can be withdrawn immediately. With the cardless solution, the bank’s customers who wish to make cash deposits no longer need to visit the banking hall. They can simply deposit their cash via the ATM into a beneficiary’s accounts at any time of the day, including weekends. This provides customers the flexibility of depositing cash anytime; hence, they do not need to worry about carrying huge sums of money home. According to the director, Payment Processing and Infrastructure at Interswitch, Akeem Lawal, the GTBank Cardless ATM cash deposit solution represents a big step towards full branch automation where entire banking operations are automated and customers are guaranteed an improved and consistent standard of service delivery at all automated bank branches. “Banks are leveraging the use of ATMs to provide improved consumer banking experience by taking self service to a whole new level,” he added. On the benefits to the bank, he noted that the “Cardless ATM cash deposit solution has reduced the number of customers who visit the GTBank branches,” where the ATM solution for cash deposit transactions was first deployed. In similar vein, Lola Odedina, head, Communication and External Affairs, GTBank, explained that the solution from Interswitch was bound to improve the Nigerian banking sector by providing a ‘’secure, quicker and more effective channel for making deposits without visiting a banking hall’ or using an ATM card. She further stated that the solution had undergone a successful and extensive test-run at certain GTBank branches and the bank was set to roll out the service in more branches within Nigeria. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2011/08/09/gtbank-customers-can-now-make-deposit-through-atm/ |
Fashola Sacks LASU’s Satellite Campuses, Part-Time Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has abrogated all part time programmes run by the Lagos State University, LASU, with effect from next academic session. This has paved way for the sack of the numerous substandard satellite campuses being run by LASU across the state. The state government said in a bid to reposition the institution, with effect from the next academic session, LASU will no longer run part time courses in any of its faculties. There are over 20, 000 students running part time programme in LASU. Fashola has already approved the cancellation of LASU’s part time programmes and abrogated the School of Part Time Studies as a way of streamlining its focus to enable it get through with accreditation of many of its courses. He said the government was prepared to bring the school to a high standard of academic excellence and promised to do his best to make the institution fulfil the educational needs of its youths. A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Otunba Fatai Olukoga, explained that the decision to cancel the part time programme of the school was based on the recommendation and decision of its Governing Council. The governor further directed that the current admission exercise for the year 2010/2011 Academic Session should be the last as far as part time programme in the school was concerned, adding that all stakeholders, operators of the system, the students and the public in general should be duly informed of the new directives. The statement further hinted that the decision was arrived at after due consideration of the report of a Visitation Panel set up by the governor to look into the academic and administrative activities of the school in the last 10 years and take a critical look into most of the activities in the school aimed at finding a lasting solution to the incessant crisis in LASU. As a result of the academic crisis in the school, the National Universities Commission, NUC, last year withdrew the accreditation of nine courses being run by the institution, while the state government had been trying to reposition the school. The crisis in the school led to the sack of its former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lateef Hussain and the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor to run the affairs of the school. The visitation panel set up by the governor to look into the finances and other activities of the school submitted its report last year. This informed the new move by Fashola to reposition the institution and move it to greater heights. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2011/08/10/fashola-sacks-lasu%E2%80%99s-satellite-campuses-part-time/ |
Nigeria, Ghana game cancelled Posted: 2011-08-09 15:47 Tuesday's international friendly between Nigeria and Ghana has been called off on the advice of the Watford police. The game was due to be played on Tuesday night at Watfotd's Vicarage Road, but Hertfordshire Constabulary advised the club that, following well-publicised outbreaks of civil unrest across pockets of London and other cities, they will not be able to police the fixture. http://www.kickoff.com/league/nigeria/ |
The first real competitive match between Ghana and Nigeria took place on August 28, 1960, according to Fifa’s official website. On that occasion, Ghana ran over Nigeria by 4 – 1 in a Fifa World Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium, Accra. The clash in 1960 was “the first-ever preliminary match south of the Sahara” according to Fifa. In the 4 – 1 win of 1960, Edward Acquah, Edward Boateng, Aggrey Fynn and Mohamadu Salisu got Ghana’s goals while Dejo Fayemi was Nigeria’s goal scorer. But soccer pundits say that the clash between the two biggest West African football teams dates back beyond 1960. Records available show that the Ghana and Nigeria may have first clashed on May 28, 1950 in a friendly game in which the Red Devils of Nigeria, as they were known then, triumphed by a lone goal over Ghana. Five years later the Nigerians suffered their biggest loss to date in the hands of their rivals when they lost 0 – 7 on October 30, 1955 in the Jalco Cup. Nigeria’s biggest win over Ghana happened in the Kwame Nkrumah Cup on February 23, 1963 when they won 5 – 0. Karen of BBA to become SA Diaspora Affairs to Gov Rochas Okorocha Another star employee Imo - Following in the footsteps of Lagos State ACN Governor, Babtunde Fashola, Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has announced his intention to make winner of Big Brother Amplified, Karen, his special assistant on Diaspora Affairs. Governor Fashola made history when he employed a non-Lagos state indigene to his cabinet. Okorocha, who has a special assistant on Lagos affairs, is now set to do the same by employing a Jos girl to his team of helpers. Although accounts vary and no one is absolutely certain, this new appointment is expected to bring to a grand total of 100, the number of special assistants to the new governor. Pundits are claiming that this will be his last SA as he would have won the bet he made that he can't employ 100 Special assistants and get away with it. Bet or no bet, the governor's record breaking army of special assistants has drawn a lot of flak from Nigerians, and some say, deservedly. Keen political observers and analysts are however predicting now that Rochas is going to be the most productive state governor haven delegated the vast majority of his responsibilities to other more capable hands. But as Nigerians are known to get their kicks from making jest of their politicians' best intentions, some busy-bodies are now asking when Okorocha will announce the appointment of his Special Assistant on Governor's duties

60’ – Two long breaks for injuries in succession means we have not had much action in the last little while. 56’ – Corner for Guatemala, Nigeria clear. 55’ – Guatemala substitution: Castillo off, Rivas on. 54’ – Kayode finally gets his goal after having two ruled out earlier in the game. There might be a few more on the cards for him this afternoon as well. 53’ – GOOOOAAAAALLLL 4-0 Nigeria and Guatemala are falling apart. Anyanwu crosses from the right, three Guatemala defenders stand and watch the ball onto Kayode's head and into the goal. Dismal defending. 52’ – Musa shows good pace to reach a through-ball on the left, but the keeper smothers his cross. 50’ – Kayode breaks free again but this time shoots over. Might have done better there. 47’ – GOOOOAAAAALLLLL! Great Nigeria goal! Kayode was brilliant in getting the byline on the right and his cross is turned home by Ajagun. 3-0. Game over. 46’ – The second half gets under way and Gautemala have made two changes at the break, Bonilla and Andrade off, Lemus and Arriola on. 45 + 2’ – HALFTIME: Nigeria fully deserve their lead at the break and really should have had more goals. Guatemala have showed little and it is difficult to see how they can find a way back into this match. 45’ – Kayode scores! But it is ruled offside. And the decision is correct again. The second time Kayode has had the ball in the back of the net from an offside position. 44’ – Musa shoots over from a tight angle when he really should have crossed. Greedy. 43’ – Ceballos has two shots on goal, the first is blocked, the second goes agonisingly wide of the post. 40’ – The Nigerians have been full value for their lead , and what is more, the sun is out! 40’ – GOOOOAAAAALLL! 2-0 Nigeria! And it is Egbedi again! Musa crosses low from the right and the ball goes all the way through to Egbedi at the back post. 37’ – Another corner for Nigeria , better this time, but the defence clears and Azeez cannot get on the end of a pass back into the box. 36’ – , Kayode heads the free-kick wide. Good chance again. 35’ – Yellow card for Del Aguila for a foul on Musa that is inches outside the penalty-box , 34’ – Corner to Nigeria , too long and it is cleared. 33’ – Guatemela have a free-kick from almost the same position as Lima wasted previously , this time he hits the target, but Paul saves easily. 31’ – Nigeria look as though they have taken the foot off the gas a little. Dangerous. 28’ – Lima heads over from an excellent cross from Ceballos. Suddenly they are having a spell of pressure. 26’ – Guatemala gets a free-kick 35-yards out but it is a terrible effort from Lima and is never troubling the keeper. 25’ – The first 25 minutes have flown by and Nigeria have been completely dominant. But while the scoreline remains 1-0, they are always in danger of giving up points. They need to convert their dominance into goals. 23’ – Ooooh. Nigeria think they have a second as Kayode turns the ball home after Garcia can only parry a shot, but the goal is rightfully ruled out for offside. 21’ – The stats people say Nigeria have had 66% of the percentage so far. It feels like more than that to be honest. 20’ – Corner for Nigeria and almost a second goal, Ogungbe heads goalwards but Garcia produced another fine save. 17’ – Lima gets to the ball ahead of the keeper, but his header goes over the top. First real chance for the Guatemalans. 16’ – Yellow card for Ogungbe as he gives Guatemala a free-kick 35-yards out , 14’ – Azeez forces Garcia into a fine save from 30-yards. Nigeria on top here! 12’ – Nothing comes of it and Guatemela break forward, but the physically imposing Nigerian defenders are mopping up nicely at the back. 11’ – Free-kick to Nigeria some 40-yards out , 8’ – The 17-year-old Egbedi is currently without a club, perhaps not for much longer though! Calm finish. 8’ – GOOOAAAALLLLL! Nigeria turn their bright start into the first goal. Musa does brilliantly on the left and the ball eventually falls to Egbedi who scores. 6’ – Guatemala get some space on the right but the cross is too close to Paul. Vasquez then receives the first yellow card of the game as he is beaten for pace by Musa. 4’ – Great start for Nigeria as Kayode finds himself one-on-one with the keeper, but Garcia managed to put the ball behind for a corner. Guatemala clear. 3’ – Early chance for the Nigerians as Egbeni crosses, but the header is blocked and Azeez's follow-up shot is high and wide. 2’ – The pitch looks good and for now the rain has abated. 1’ – And we are under way! – The teams are coming out onto the pitch to the strains of the FIFA anthem. – Guatemala starting XI: Garcia, Andrade, Ramirez, Vasquez, Del Aguila, Ceballos, Castillo, Lopez, Betancourt, Bonilla, Lima. – Nigeria starting XI: Paul, Suswam, Omeruo, Ogungbe, Musa, Kayode, Ajagun, Daniel, Egbedi, Azeez. – It has been raining almost non-stop in Colombia since the start of the tournament and we are in for another wet night in Armenia. – It is a game both sides will expect to win, but the Nigerians should hold the edge with their pace and power. – Nigeria open their 2011 FIFA Under-20 World Cup campaign against Central American side Guatemala. http://worldcup.mtnfootball.com/live/content.php?Item_ID=48140 |

Ghanaian Fans Attack Nigerian Players, Journalists The rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana took an ugly turn on Saturday in the run-up to the All Africa Games qualifier between the Dream Team V and the Black Meteors as fans in Kumasi turned on the Nigerian team and journalists. There were reports in the Ghanaian media before and after the first leg of the All Africa Games qualifier between the two teams in Benin two weeks ago that the Ghanaian contingent was mistreated and the fans and some of the Ghanaian officials were apparently bent on taking their own pound of flesh. The shameful incident at the Baba Yara Stadium started when the Ghanaian team arrived to have their own training session while the Nigerian team was still making use of the mainbowl pitch. While the Nigerian players were going through a tactical training session, which started around 3.30pm and was still a few minutes before the one hour allotted, an argument ensued on the sidelines between the officials of both sides. The Ghanaians said the Nigerians’ time was up while the visitors insisted that they still had a few minutes to finish their session. Things got to a head when the Ghanaians entered the pitch and forcibly led the Nigerians out in the middle of their session. Before then, as soon as the Ghanaians arrived and saw some Nigerian journalists in the dugout watching the training, one of the players eyeballed the reporters, telling them that they had no right to be there when they (the Nigerians) treated the Ghanaians so badly in Benin. This led to another round of argument and one of the Ghanaian officials explained that Nigerians should have begun training at 3pm before begging for a 30-minute grace because their lunch arrived late. But that was just a tip of the iceberg as some Ghanaian fans, who had come to see their team train, started shouting insults at the Nigerians, calling for them to leave the stadium. When the players got to their bus, a section of the fans, numbering over 20, started shouting “We’ll kill you tomorrow” and pelting them with missiles, including filled sachet water packs. But, surprisingly, the players picked up the missiles and hauled them back at the fans, apparently having had enough of the harassment. When he was told to calm down, one of the enraged players said: “If we stand back and let them continue they’ll hurt us. We can’t let them intimidate us.” The players were eventually herded into their bus, but that was not the end of the sad drama. A Nigeria Television Authority cameraman trying to film the ugly scene was severely beaten up and his camera almost smashed, while the SuperSport man, who is also a Nigerian, was threatened. A female member of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Mercy Osakwe, who arrived in Kumasi with the team on Friday, was also assaulted while she was trying to gain entry, bruising her right elbow in the process. Osakwe said she was pinpointed by one of the security personnel as a Nigerian and the fans called her ‘ashawo’ (prostitute) as they descended on her. To confirm Osakwe’s claim, one of the security men wagged his fingers at journalists and threatened to allow give the Ghanaian fans free rein on Sunday because “you Nigerians gave us hell when we came to your country.” The Nigerians finally escaped after a band of fans laid siege to them at the gate and nearly snatched the steering wheel from the driver of their bus. The match holds at 3pm Ghanaian time (4pm Nigeria). A concerned Nigerian High Commissioner in Ghana, Musiliu Obanikoro, visited the team hotel after the fracas, promising to ensure that security will be beefed up on Sunday for the game. He said Ghanaians are usually friendly and accommodating people, with only a few unruly elements among them causing all the havoc. http://www.kickoff.com/news/22867/ugly-scenes-as-ghana-nigeria-nears.php |

My stupid boyfriend slapped me again, what should I do Aunty Ngozi, My stupid boyfriend slapped me again. What should I do? Should I kill him, maim him, or just pour acid on him? This is not the first time or the second time or the third time he’s embarrassing me in public like this so I’m really out for revenge dis time. Nothing can stop me! TK My reply Dear TK, It is not your boyfriend that’s stupid but you. After the first slap, the second slap, the third slap, and God knows how many other slaps, and all in public (I’m guessing from your letter), the best solution you’ve come up with is to commit one of several offences that’ll most definitely land you in prison? Really? I know what this is; you just want to hear me say ‘you have fall my hand.’ Well, any woman that waits till the second slap before dumping an a***hole has fall her own hand before she even begins to fall my own. And any woman who announces her intended crime of passion on the internet instead of quietly planning the prefect crime that she’ll get away with has mega fall my hand! Aunty Ngozi |
My husband went through my phone Aunty Ngozi, please help me now! I am in a serious mess. In fact, I am in deep poo. Aunty, it is my husband, he has my phone and he has gone though it and he has read everything! Everything! In fact, right now I am in my friend's house sending you this distress message. I'm afraid to go back home. Help me! Please help me. How can I explain all the messages from Alhaji? Distressed wife My reply Dear Distressed wife, Calm down. It is not the end of the world. You should not have left your home. For what? You have fall my hand, but there is redemption yet. I take it you did not give him your phone to go through, so that is your angle; he obviously has trust issues. You need to play on this. You need to make him feel there is something wrong with him, not you. But before you cam pull this off you have to erase everything on your phone. Call your network provider and declare your phone stolen. They will ask you for your IMEI number. Don't panic. If you don't have it they can use your phone number; you just have to prove the phone is yours by telling them the last few number you called. Don's ask me how I know. Tell them it's your business phone and you have all your bank details and highly sensitive data stored on it. Oyinbo people have really tried; your phone will be remotely wiped clean. Once this is done, wait for him to call you and just begin to cry before you even say anything, If he asks you why you are crying, tell him it's because you know he wants to divorce you and that is why he's making up all sorts of stories about finding incriminating evidence on your phone. This is important: Tell him (while still crying) that the phone hasn't even been working well and you haven't been able to send, talk less of receive, any messages on it. When he goes through the phone again, as he must, and he finds the evidence gone, he would start to doubt his own sanity. You must help him with this doubt. Start to make up stories like, "That is the same way you beat me up that night and in the morning you said you didn't remember doing any such thing." When he is asking you what you are talking about, tell him, in a deeply wounded voice, "I love you, but I'm afraid of you now because of the way you've been behaving. I think we should be apart for now while you seek help." Keep this up until you can tell that he is truly genuinely doubting his own sanity, then wait till he begs you not to tell anyone what he's going through before you agree to 'give him another chance if he promises to seek help.' I really don't like helping cheating wives like this, but I hate men who go through girl's phones more than I hate the girls who cheat on them. Carry out my instructions to the letter and you'll have your man and your marriage back. But, you too, stop being so unprofessional: always delete sexting messages from your phone once you've read them, and never ever let your husband or anyone to go through your phone. Dont fall my hand again, abeg. Good night. Aunty Ngozi http://www.wazobiareport.com/agony-aunt/My-husband-went-through-my-phone |
Abuja - Following announcement of 6pm and 10 pm curfews respectively for children and adult joints in Abuja, wives in the federal capital territory have today praised the federal government and resolved to send a thank-you gift-hamper to the person in government responsible for the new law. An Abuja housewife who says she hasn’t seen her husband in daytime in over six years, said of the curfew: “I did not vote for Jonathan, but I now know I should have. He is really pro-marriage. With this new curfew, he has demonstrated that he has the interest of Nigerian women at heart. I am so happy; I will finally get to spend more time with my husband.” The curfew is the latest strategy from the arsenal of law enforcement agencies in their fight against the menace that is Boko Haram. Earlier, Mr President also called upon Facebook Nigerians to be vigilant and watch out for suspicious behaviour. He made this call through his Facebook fan-page: “There are an estimated 150 million pairs of eyes inNigeriaand believe me, that is the greatest deterrent possible against terrorism. Today, I call on all Nigerians to be watchful. Be conscious of your surroundings and report suspicious activities and persons to the authorities. GEJ” Not all residents of Abuja are however happy with the curfew. Speaking under condition of anonymity, Domitala (not real name), an Abuja resident of unspecified vocation, said: “This government just dey fall person hand anyhow. No be say Boko Haram don win be dat? Imagine all the money wey workers go loose because of this curfew. Na night Suya man dey sell; na night, club dey sell; even sef we, na night we dey get customer. How they want make we pay our rent now?" As the last bomb attack on the federal city occurred at 10am, observers are now predicating that the curfew will soon be extended to commence from 3pm when government workers close from work. http://www.wazobiareport.com/reports/Abuja-wives-rejoice-over-10pm-curfew-Prostitutes-protest |

V. HISTORY The site of an old Yoruba settlement named Eko, Lagos was visited by Portuguese traders in 1472 and named for a port in Portugal. The Portuguese developed Lagos as a major center for the trade of goods and slaves. The city served in this capacity until 1861, when it was annexed by the British, who by this time opposed slavery. The British governed Lagos as a crown colony. British rule was opposed by several local Yoruba states, and a series of conflicts in the 1870s and 1880s hampered British trade with the interior. The British conquered these states in the late 1880s and early 1890s, expanding the territory of the colony. In 1914 Lagos became the capital of the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. In 1960 the city became the capital of independent Nigeria. As Nigeria’s oil industry boomed in the early 1970s, Lagos began developing rapidly. The population of Lagos ballooned as migrants from all over Nigeria and from neighboring countries flocked to the city. In accordance with a plan first announced in 1976 to combat Lagos’s explosive growth, the seat of the Nigerian federal government was moved from Lagos to Abuja in December 1991. However, much of the federal bureaucracy continued to operate out of Lagos. I. INTRODUCTION Lagos (Nigeria), city in southwestern Nigeria, in Lagos State, located on the Bight of Benin (an arm of the Atlantic Ocean). Lagos is Nigeria’s largest city, chief port, and principal economic and cultural center. It served as Nigeria’s capital until 1991, when the seat of federal government was moved to Abuja, in central Nigeria. II. DESCRIPTION Lagos, Nigeria Lagos, Nigeria Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria, is located on the Gulf of Guinea. It occupies Lagos Island, Ikoyi Island, and Victoria Island, as well as a large area on the mainland, all connected by a series of bridges and freeways. Encarta Encyclopedia Anna Tully/Hutchison Library The Lagos metropolitan area spreads over much of Lagos State (3345 sq km/1292 sq mi), which is located on four principal islands and adjacent parts of the Nigerian mainland. The islands are connected to each other and to the mainland by bridges and landfills. Major sections of the city include the old city, which now serves as the commercial district, on western Lagos Island; Ikoyi Island, situated just east of Lagos Island and joined to it by a landfill; Apapa, the chief port district, located on the mainland; residential Victoria Island; and industrialized Iddo Island. Important mainland suburbs, incorporated as part of the city in 1967, include Ebute-Metta, Yaba, Suru Lere, Ajegunle, Shomolu, Agege, Mushin, and Ikeja. III. POPULATION AND CULTURE Market in Lagos, Nigeria Market in Lagos, Nigeria The minarets of the new Central Mosque, built in 1988, overlook an open-air market in Lagos, the largest city of Nigeria. The market displays the diversity of the city’s manufacturing products, many created by family-run enterprises producing traditional craft goods. Encarta Encyclopedia Betty Press/Woodfin Camp and Associates, Inc. Lagos has a very diverse and fast-growing population, resulting from heavy and ongoing migration to the city from all parts of Nigeria as well as neighboring countries. In 1992 Lagos had an estimated population of about 1,347,000. The population of its metropolitan area was about 10.1 million in 2003. The United Nations predicts that the city’s metropolitan area, which had only about 290,000 inhabitants in 1950, will exceed 20 million by 2010, making Lagos one of the world’s five largest cities. The Yoruba, an African people inhabiting southwest Nigeria, constitute the city’s principal ethnic group. English is the most commonly used language, but Yoruba and other Nigerian languages are also spoken. Lagos is an important center of Nigerian intellectual and cultural life. The University of Lagos (1962), Yaba College of Technology (1948), Lagos State University (1983), and Lagos State Polytechnic (1977) are located in the city, as are several major research institutes. Lagos is also the site of the National Library of Nigeria (1964) and the National Museum (1957), which has collections in archaeology, ethnography, and traditional art. The National Theater (1976) stages plays, dance performances, and music concerts, and also houses collections of contemporary Nigerian art. IV. ECONOMY Lagos is Nigeria’s leading port, particularly for imports of consumer goods, foodstuffs, motor vehicles, machinery, and industrial raw materials. Its export trade in timber and agricultural products such as cacao and groundnuts has declined since the early 1970s. More than half of Nigeria’s industrial capacity is located in Lagos’s mainland suburbs, particularly in the Ikeja industrial estate. A wide range of manufactures are produced in the city, including machinery, motor vehicles, electronic equipment, chemicals, beer, processed food, and textiles. Lagos is the western terminus for the Nigerian railway system and is linked by rail and road to Ibadan, Kano, and other major Nigerian cities. Murtala Muhammad International Airport is located in the suburbs northwest of the city center. Lagos’s rapid, mostly unregulated growth, coupled with the challenges of its fragmented geography, have resulted in chronically congested traffic conditions on the city’s roads. Despite this, there is relatively little transportation by water between the islands and mainland sections of Lagos. |
