Go to consumer reviews, that is where u can really get good information on how reliable they are. The ford ranger used by frsc is just a means for the govt to cut costs and embezzle money because hilux are more expensive. Even top auto sites like CNET and top speed have good things to say about the hilux/Tacoma.

I agree with you except the HTC-Honda comparism. Htc phones are a bit high end and not everybody fancies them and there are cheaper models you can consider. I'd pair it with a Mercedes instead. Let's put Nokia with Honda.

U may be right. But I think the only way to pair a Mercedes is iPhone, there's no 2 way about that. HTC are like Samsung but they have fewer phones but the ones they have they use more premium materials than Samsung and that is why I pair them with Honda . HTC also have mid range phones just like Honda has Honda fit and civic.

*Modified*. Okay, let me remove the trucks as it's distorting the figures even though tundra, a truck sold in US did not even make the top 20.. and since you said Nigerians would rather put a 1.4 engine in their favourite Toyota Sequoia, Landcruiser(v8 variant) and prado(v8 variant) suvs....

Below you have the top selling sedans in the US between the years 1999 - 2001.

Ford taurus was number 3 on that list in sales for 3 years consistently and corolla number 7 consistently....Yet we have more corollas in Nigeria for that year more than the Taurus or Cavalier or civic.... I don't even think I have ever seen a Cavalier in Nigeria.
That's a good reason to show that the demand for Toyota is high in Nigeria maybe for their reliability but definitely not because it sells well in the US or not because Nigerian dealers have no choice.

You are right , but I think u misunderstood me. My initial comment was to add to the points the op had already given, which include reliability, easy to fix, etc. Toyota cars are not the most beautiful, they are not the most powerful, they are not the most luxurious. But what they have done is make cars with everything put together at a considerable level and considerable price too. People think it is easy to bring a considerable balance to reliability, luxury, and performance at a bargain price. That is what Toyota have done and that is why they are so popular.

Toyota Camry is the number one selling sedan in the USA, Nigerians don't care if it is Camry or corolla or matrix, so far it is a Toyota, they are in so yes demand plays a big part.

You can't base ur research on full sized trucks alone. Those F150 come with big v8 engines. If an average Nigerian has his way he would fix a 1.4L engine in a Toyota Sequoia. That is how much we value fuel economy. Most of the cars on Nigerian roads are sedans and small SUVs not full size trucks like F150 or Silverado. Toyota Camry sells more than ford fusion in the USA, corolla sells more than focus.

Also u don't make ur findings on 2014 sales. U realize most cars shipped in Nigeria are used, it would take lots of years to convince people to change their brand, just like it would take years to know if a car is reliable or not. You should make use findings based on sales over the last 10-15 years.

Bros, that u can get s tiny light for $800 doesn't mean u will always get it st that price. That deal comes once in a while, and if dealers are waiting for that opportunity then there won't be enough tiny light to meet the demand. Go to the port and see how many tiny light they clear in a day, then tell me dealers wait for once in a while deals to make their bid. U are not guaranteed of getting a clean tiny light for $800, unless u are buying severely salvaged and some salvaged even cost up to $1,200.

That is because Americans love full sized trucks than any other people in the world, and to have that truck made by an indigenous manufacturer is a plus.

In as much as this a good development to defeat terrorism, one part of me still thinks all these newly acquired weapons might be used to start a civil war especially if Jonathan loses the election.

Some will say I sound weird, but we have been hearing threats from naija delta and Biafra that they will go to war if Jonathan doesn't win. I know Nigeria is bigger than just one region, but it becomes more complicated if the president is using his position to arm them.

This is just a speculation, no evidence, just a second thought but I think it might be worth lookin at.

I don't know much about Toyota's, but any mechanic should be able to reverse it. Just look for the fan switch that is disconnected, u will see a little wire used to bridge the connection. Remove the wire and connect the switch to its right place. Then replace thermostat. But ur ect sensor must be working for this to go well. A simple scan will detect if there's s problem with ect. Also it is adviced to use coolant in radiator instead of water.

If u live around ikeja/ogba I can refer u to someone they would do this for u.

Even with the advent of cheaper obd ii devices and internet based automotive materials, people still stick to the words of their mechanic over the learned engineers who designed and manufactured their cars and also folks who have learnt one or two things about their cars.

True talk. My younger brother drives a 2001 Honda accord baby boy. For the past 2 months the car has been a nightmare. It rough idles and vibrates vigorously at cold start and u need to put ur foot on the accelerator when starting it in the morning. In fact when u pack the car for 2 hours it would be a nightmare to start because the idle was terrible. It normalizes after about 15 minutes of driving but in traffic it becomes a nightmare.

He lives in Ogun state, he has changed virtually everything from fuel pump to nuzzles (actually a 1992 Honda accord nuzzle was used), spark plugs, changed ro double cell radiator, removed thermostat, ran cooling fan directly... The car was heavily abused by the mechanics in his neighborhood. He decided to bring it to Lagos and we started troubleshooting.

First I installed a thermostat, returned the can to factory settings, changed ECT. The car became a lot better and he was surprised at how the car worked well with fans coming up only when temperature has reached optimum temperature, it was like the car was working with less stress and he confirmed the mpg was a lot better.

But then the rough idle and vibration at cold start persisted. I scanned again and found iacv code. He brought the car back to Lagos 2 days ago, we replaced idle air control valve after cleaning the old one and no result. It was really a tough job finding the culprit but finally we found it. Alas, the stupid mechanic that worked on the car used pure water nylon to block the air passage into the iacv. I mean what maniac would do that? He must have done that when the iacv went bad but because he doesn't understand the system, he decided to convert it to manual. Does he think thid is a cab engine? Hence, the iacv was not sensing anything which affected the idling. We removed the nylon and the installed the new iacv and voila everything went to normal. My brother was wowed and told me its been more than 2 months he saw that car work the way it does now.

Mtn 4.5gb for 2k5 rock. But when I'm in download mode, etisalat payg does it for me.

Bros u will continue changing compressors if u opt of automatic. Trust me I love my camry and I had to be extra convinced to get the manual after 2 automatic compressors failed infront of me. ThankGod I waited to test it for 2hours. I had to go for manual. Bros Go for a manual compressor and have peace of mind. My car chills like crazy and nvr vibrates.

u can't be too sure. If the car was used for 8 years before shipping to Nigeria without changing to manual compressor, then it means people here are doing something wrong. I have a friend that bought his 3 years ago and has never touched the original compressor that came with it.

Honestly, the recent models of ford brands are very stylish and good on gas. It is just that people hardly embrace change due to the fear of the unknown. More like a comfort zone mentality. Even though ford brands are relatively cheaper with lots of incentives and financing options, which other brand do not give, people are being reluctant when its comes time to make a choice. However, for those living in the US where service and maintenance is available, there is no reason not to drive a ford. Very true. The thing is ford had a bad history of reliability, even though they have fixed most of their problems. But then Toyota has a good history of reliability and it is difficult for people to leave what they trust to embrace the unknown. Ask blackberry users why they keep using it even though there lots of better and cheaper phones out there.

Toyota still sells more than ford even in the USA. The only reason ford sells there is because it is an american country. The same way perodua and proton sells well in Malaysia (not that they are the best all round). Same way innosson will sell well in Nigeria in a few years if they can get their sh!t together. Ford cars have a very bad history of reliability and that is why they can't just sell here.

2) intenate bid fee.........................$70
3) Inland transporation...................$300 (may be higher depending on the port of exit)
4)Expenses associated with fund transfer $300
5)Sending of vehicle document ............................$80
6)other misc. when it gets to Lagos....................$100

Total $1150 .This is about #230k (naira) . So add that to your previous figure of #602k . Now you have #832K

Spot on. I deliberately didn't answer reply that post because no matter what I say the poster will not agree with me. And to get a clean title 1999 Camry with low mileage will cost more than $2,000 excluding shipping, clearing and other charges. Now when someone brings that one and put a price tag of 1.2 million people will scream that others are selling for 900k.
