Car TalkRe: Are Americans Bad Drivers? Why Do They Have Lots Of Salvage Vehicles by abatically(m):
Readonee35L:
am not talking about cost of repairs

but do you know the amount of car crashes In america everyday, amounts of created salvage vehicles per day
compare it with Nigeria
Do u also know the population of USA is twice that of Nigeria. U also realize there are about 5 times more cars over there than here. Also they take record of every auto crash no matter how little it is. Compare to here where someone bashes ur car and everything ends there without the police even taking record. So do the maths.

With Swift, I download approximately 1.3GB in 10 Min. As for spectranet, I have to ask do you use a dongle or wifi device? I use a USB dongle and my maximum speed is about 260Kilobytes per second but I have noticed that people who use wifi devices report about 2.5MBps so you should also factor that in. For me, my swift is about 10times as fast as my spectranet speed.
I use a WiFi device. See spectranet use to be fast in the past but now they are thrash. U can hardly get 1mbps wit their device. Even if u manage to get 2.5mbps, its still 3 times slower than MTN.

I totally agree with you that there is no 4gLTE network in Nigeria but where in God's name does MTN or any mobile network in this country provide a downlod speed of 8mbps? even the etisalat payG plan with the fastest download speed then never exceeded 4mbps at peak periods. If MTN truly offers 8mbps download speed then you should be able to download 4.8gb in ten minutes.
Bros, check a few posts above, u will see proof with pictures.

I don't like politics. Buhari or Jonathan I'm not a fan of either. But let's all be real here. I see nothing special in this set up. Lots of Nigerians who are not even into politics can afford a more elaborate wedding than this. He is the President for Pete's sake. So because he is a President then his daughter must not wed?

If his daughter's wedding is not up to per, people will say he is CLUELESS and HAVE NO TASTE

If his daughter's wedding come bam nko, same people will say SEE OUR MONEY.

sigh

Dude, stop the name calling simply because you don't agree with him. It all boils down to your location. For instance, in my former location (Mile 12 Lagos), ALL THE FOUR GSM, and I repeat, ALL THE FOUR GSM networks are very fast. In fact, the slowest there was Airtel and I used to get at least 4mbps on it, while etisalat goes as high as 8mbps. But unfortunately, neither swift nor spectranet was as fast as that then. The one that was fast there was Starcomms. But now that I'm at a different loacation (Festac, Lagos). Etisalat isn't as fast as it used to be. Now getting speeds of 3mbps on the average, MTN is also on that same scale, Swift is very fast so also is Spectranet. But Smile is the fastest of them all here but also the most expensive. So, what you get in one location doesn't translate to the same thing all over. This is the same thing that happens abroad where some telcos have great LTE service in some areas and only EDGE or 3G at best in some others.
God bless u. It all comes down to location. I know between swift, spectranet and smile, smile is still the fastest.

The thing is the highest speed u can get on spectranet is 4mbps no matter ur location (which is very rare to get). I live in Ikeja and is one of the best locations for Spectranet. MTN on the other hand will always give me 7-8mbps almost everytime while the average I get on spectranet is 1mbps. MTN can even get as high as 12mbps depending on location. So how is spectranet faster than MTN?

Below is another test I did. spectranet getting download speed of 0.71mbps while mtn is getting 7.00mbps. (note that my mtn was on ordinary 3G, would have been faster on HSDPA). It took spectranet 45 seconds to stream an HD video that only took 4.4 seconds for MTN to stream

I repeat, stop lying, I use the same MTN and Spectranet you are comparing.
Oya na, show me the speed of ur Spectranet. At least I've shown u mine, if u can't show me then u are the BIG liar. I still repeat that highest speed u can get on Spectranet at peak hour is still less than 3mbps while MTN can give u 9mbps. That is 3 times faster dude.

If u don't know how to check speed, download internet speed test on ur mobile pbone, do the test, take a screen shot. Only then can u be taken seriously.

You are a bloody liar to say that Mtn is faster than Spectranet! As If you are the only person it Abi? Try streaming with Etisalat and Spectranet and come tell the difference. Stop peddling lies.
See me see wahala oh. I pay over 12,000 naira every month on data alone. I am a premium Spectranet subscriber and the highest their network can ever get is 2.5mbps while MTN easily get up to 8mbps. So which one is faster? I stream seamlessly on my MTN without any lag while sometimes it struggles on Spectranet. I can watch a 720p video on YouTube with MTN without any problem . Try that on Spectranet and no be person go tell u before u switch to 480p or 320p. The only difference is MTN is more expensive than Spectranet.

I have Spectranet, MTN and etisalat. Etisalat is also fast (used to be the best in the past) but for the past 5 months MTN has been a lot better in the Ikeja area.

If u can show me a network that can beat my mtn at 8mbps, then u win. Check the pictures below, see how Spectranet is struggling to get to 0.8mbps while MTN easily gets 8mbps. So which one is after?

Why don't u show me ur own speed before calling someone a liar. Or maybe of course u know nothing about internet speed.

I have seen a bold 5 showing 4G but I can't really remember the mobile network, I also believe those 4G LTE networks are real (smile, swift, spectranet) so why won't they reach the recommended speed limit? The reason is throttling. When I always subscribe MTN 250 for 2hrs before they included 150mb also as a limiter any time I download file worth 100mb at speeds in excess
of 2mbs the next download is throttled and the speed won't exceed 15kbps until you exhaust the subscription.

If you want to maintain the real speed of a particular band width you pay for in Naija, then be ready to be a premium customer and you have to pay tooth and nail for it. Check all those 4G providers that have different packages with speeds starting from 512kbps upwards.

.
I repeat there is no 4GLTE in Nigeria, all are just marketing stunts. If u know what 4GLTE can do then u will agree with me. U can download a 1gb worth under just 10 mins. Which network in naija can give u that? Even 4GLTE only got to some parts of UK in 2014. The only network in Nigeria that is even close is smile and they are still not up to par.

Spectranet? Don't name me laugh, I'm a premium subscriber and they themselves will tell u their highest speed is 4mbps which u can never even get. Etisalat is faster than Spectranet, MTN is 3 times the speed of spectrabet. Just so u know, there's s big difference between 4g and 4glte.
PhonesRe: 4GLTE Experience In Nigeria by abatically(m): 8:40pm On Jan 09, 2015
First of all, there is no 4GLTE in Nigeria. Forget all those marketing stunts those internet providers give u. I have been using spectranet for over a year, even though they claim its 4GLTE, their highest speed at peak times is about 2.7mbps. Most times it hovers between 1.0mbps-1.5mbps. That is the speed of 3g in the United States. There is no network in Nigeria that can offer a speed of up to 15mbps, 4GLTE should be able to offer up to 42mbps. So tell me how is 2mbps stand against a real 4GLTE of 42mbps. I think those internet providers in Nigeria should be sued for advertising 4GLTE when they are giving us a speed of 3g or HSPA .

If a network cannot give at least 20mbps of speed, then we can't call it 4GLTE, but spectranet wouldn't even give u a speed of 3mbps. Smile would struggle to maintain 6mbps. As a matter of fact my MTN can get as fast as 8mbps and that is a lot faster then my spectranet.

Anyway OP, I think the fastest in Nigeria for now is Smile but its no where near 4GLTE.

First picture is my Spectranet struggling to get 0.8mbps. And they call that 4GLTE?

Second picture is my mtn breezing through 8mbps on HSDPA.

I have been thinking about this for sometime now. I heard it's expensive for an average American to carry out repairs, that's why they prefer to buy new ones.
Why would anyone spend $3,000 to repair a car that is valued at $4,000 when insurance can pay u for ur car and auction it as salvaged? A car that can be repaired in Nigeria for $500 would probably cost $2,000 upwards in USA because they use genuine parts and cost of labor is high.

I just inherited a 2005 Chrysler 300 Touring that I'm trying to fix. Took it to my friend's mechanic who gave me a bill that I would like the experts in the house to weigh in on.

stabilizer linkage N18,000

lower arm double bushing N50,000

lower arm with joint N50,000

ball joint N50,000

Complete tie rod N30,000

stabilizer rubber N10,000

set of front and back brake pad N50,000

total #208,000

This bill sounds very outrageous and I would like for people with more experience and expertise to weigh in on this matter. Thank you very much.
1. U paying the price for luxury
2. Paying the price of using a car that the parts are not well sought after.
3. I'm sure u took ur car to a reputable garage. Its a good thing to do but u also have to pay the price.
4. Time to start appreciating baba kazeem lol.

Bottom line, pay the price or look for a roadside Mech with good reputation . since there are no electrical problems involved, it won't be a very difficult task. I'm sure u can get most if not all those parts for half the quoted price in Lagos. If lower arm set is sold for $52 on eBay, how on earth would ur Mech tell u they are 50,000 naira?

@Op, your first misconception is concerning getting a used one. Contrary to what you have stated, you can easily tell a good replacement just by looking at it. I.e even before it is installed. I don't know where you intend to get your from sha but a used replacement is easily obtainable in Lagos.

Secondly, I still have spacers although just one left. However for anyone intending to install a spacer, you MUST de-cat first. Meaning, you must remove the element in the exhaust. This is because, if at that point, your element has broken up into pieces or breaks into pieces later on, you will not know until it is too late and the particles have been sucked into your engine.

Cheers
De-cat? I installed my cat in may 2013, light came back in July, I then installed spacer in July 2013 and since then light never came back. I check my cat regularly though and its still OK.

The camry has a 6 cylinder variant which has more horse power than the avensis but the 4 cylinder avensis has more horse power than the 4 cylinder camry as stated with all the clarification and information given I don't expect you not to have known your choice.
Nope, the 4 cylinder avensis is not as powerful as the 4 cylinder Camry. The 2.4L version of the avensis is very scarce to get as only limited number were made, what u get most is the 2.0L version. Even though the 2.4L version has about 5 more hp than the corresponding Camry, the Camry is still faster. The avensis is as slow as hell, 0-60 at 9.2 seconds is not acceptable for such a small sedan.

There's a difference between smart phone and non smart phone bro. A bicycle is easier and cheaper to maintain than a car, but is it faster or more convenient than a car? Based on the quoted online review which supports the view that crv and rav4 are ranked higher than the escape, I accept your opinion and you win.

But when you consider the uniqueness that an escape offers, coupled with reduced cost, people like myself may still want to stick to the escape. Perhaps this explains why the escape is increasing in number recently.

Thanks for the online resource.
All is good bro, its different strokes for different folks. We buy whatever suits us. Its just not right to think Nigerians that buy Toyota and Honda are inferior. Those cars sell even more in north America, are those people also inferior? If Toyota and Honda are not doing something right, then they wouldn't get that much sales.
Car TalkRe: American Cars, What Is So Wrong With Them? by abatically(m): 6:49pm On Jan 05, 2015

Different strokes for different folks. I respect your opinion, but I have colleagues using Rav4 and crv of similar years and I see the performance of these cars. Its also true that escapes are cheaper. I also don't understand what you mean by build quality, cos for me, rav4 is damn too short a car. Also, I prefer the interior of an escape to a crv.
Don't know much about the ix35, so can't comment.

Personally, I think it is the craze about Toyota and Honda in Nigeria that has made people overlook the escape. Otherwise, I think it should be ranked higher than rav4 and crv.
Bros, I said year for year. Rav 4 is short because it belongs to the group of compact CUV, so is crv and Ford Escape. A 2000 CRV is still well built and reliable than a 2000 ford escape, likewise a 2005 Rav4 dusts the 2005 Escape.

@ the bolded, can u explain what u mean? Nigerian mentality is just a cheap tactic bro. Even in USA which is the country of FORD, Rav 4 and CRV still beats it in terms of sales, so are Americans also crazy about Toyota and Honda that they ignore their own home-grown brand? The only Ford Escape that are worth buying are the new models as they have greatly improved. Still the Ford Escape does not rank higher than a CRV in the compact CUV section.

See where ur Ford Escape is ranked in USA in the compact CUV section.

Personally, I hate those Japanese cars. They are too common.

Go for it if that is where your heart is.
Ford escape sha. U know that car will not stand against a rav 4 or crv or even hyubdai ix35 of the same year in terms of build quality and reliability unless u are just using it because it is cheaper and less common. TRUTH.

My brother I didn't want to barge into you guys argument but let put it this way, my review was based on Nigerian settings, the op is not bother about the acceleration or how many cars the avensis can dust.

I have been in that avensis and I can proudly say it is not a slow poke and neither is it inferior to the camry the avensis is also as reliable as the camry interms of everything but the interior of the avensis is a tad smoother and well placed than the camry, also the avensis is not a robber magnet I gave the avensis my all putting into consideration our environment.

Which one of the two cars will have its ECU stolen or even broken in and driven away not to be seen again or which one will get tailed more by the MEN of THE UnDeRwOrLd.
Well u may be right to some extent. The Avensis was built like an European car, especially the interior and dash, looks more like a VW passat. But the driving doesn't feel anyway like the German car they tried to copy. Good thing they added an immobiliser though, I really don't know why Toyota didn't add that in the base and Le trims of 2002-2006 camry and that is why they are easy to steal.
