CHAPTER 1 One could begin with the dust, the heat and the purple bougainvillea. One might even begin with the smell of rotten mangoes tossed by the side of the road where flies hummed and green-bellied lizards bobbed their orange heads while loitering in the sun. But, Tayo did not notice these – instead he walked in silence, oblivious to his surroundings. With a smile on his face, he thought of the night before, when he had dared to run a hand beneath the folds of Modupe’s wrapper. Miraculously, without him even asking, Modupe had loosened the cloth around her waist. Of course they’d kissed many times before, usually in the Lebanese cinema when all was dark, but that was nothing compared to last night. And while Tayo was lost in his thought, his father, who walked alongside, notice the smile and read it as excitement for the forthcoming Trip. They had set off early that morning to visit relatives, as was the tradition when someone was about to embark on a long journey. They would begin with Uncle Bola in the hope to find him sober. By midday,he would almost certainly be drinking ogogoro and and this was not the day to meet Uncle Bola under the influence. “An old man should be con templating his mortality rather than dreaming of women,” Tayo’s father said alluding to his brother’s raunchy tales, which Tayo knew his father secretly enjoyed. Uncle B like to joke that he is still young to make babies and thank the Lord God Almighty. And he did make babies – dozens of them. As for thanking God – well, that was simply a manner of speaking. Uncle Bola believed only in beautiful women – not Allah,Christ, nor Ogun. In turn, women loved him, in spite of what he lacked by way of height, teeth and schooling. Tayo had long since concluded that Uncle Bola held the secret of woman’s heart, which was why he looked forward to this visit. But on this particular morning, Uncle Bola did not seem himself . Upon seeing them, he became quite weepy, so weepy in fact that he forgot about his atheism and offered prayer to Allah, Ogun and Jesus on behalf of his favourite nephew. With tears still in his eyes, Uncle Bola gave Tayo his best aso-ebi as a going-away present, and then insisted that they stay longer to take amala and stew with him. “Here is some money for the ladies when you arrive ,” Uncle Bola whispered, stuffing the newly-minted pound notes into Tayo’s shirt pocket before waving a final goodbye. Tayo had hoped to stay even longer, enjoying the company of his sentimental uncle, but there many more relatives to be visited and several more lunches to eat. Everyone insisted on feeding them and then, just when Tayo thought it was all over, they returned to find more relatives gathered to wish him well. Several of Father’s friends were sprawled across the courtyard drinking beer and palm wine while the children chased each other in the dirt path by the side of the house. The women sat in one corner, roasting corn on an open fire, with sleeping babies on their backs. “Tayo! Tayo!” the older children chanted as he made his way through the throng, stopping to pick up the youngest. Tayo expected his father to usher people away, but after the day’s copious consumption of palm wine, he had apparently forgotten time, preferring instead to continue boasting about his eldest son. “Na special scholarship dey don make for de boy?” somebody asked. “Oh yes.” Tayo’s father beamed. In fact, the scholarship was nor created just for Tayo, but because he was the first Nigerian to win it (such things having been reserved, in the past, for whites), Tayo’s father decided that he might as well claim it solely for his son. Tayo closed his eyes while his father boasted, and thought ahead to the day after next, imagining how he would move swiftly through the crowds at Lagos Port to the Ship and sail over the seas to England . “And the to balliol College, Oxford ,” Tayo whispered, thinking how grand it sounded. At dawn the following day, the entire Ajayi family said prayers before gathering around Father’s silver Morris Minor, washed and polished by brothers Remi and Tunde so that it glistened like fresh river fish. Everybody was dressed in his or her Sunday best, ready for the photographs, and only when the cameraman ran out of film did five of them clamber into the car. Father sounded the horn and all the doors slam shut. The key turned and turned again, but the motor wouldn’t start, so everyone stumbled out again to push. Even Father helped, with one foot pumping the pedals and the other pushing back against the ground. They rolled it down the path, out of the compound and onto the road, until the engine jerked into action. Then, hurriedly, they all piled back in. The children followed the car down to the dirt road, running and waving, not caring about the dust being blown into their faces, but jogging along until they could no longer keep up. Sister Bisi ran the fastest thumping decisively on the car boot before they sped away, out of Ibadan and onto the main road that would take them to Uncle Kayode’s place in Lagos. In the car, Mama and Baba sat in the front, and Tayo and his two aunt in the back. Father forbade talking in the car, claiming that it distracted him, and for once Tayo was happy with the edict, knowing that otherwise his aunts would lecture him on how to behave in England. It didn’t matter that his aunts had never travelled outside Nigeria: it was their right and duty to instruct. Tayo closed his eyes and thought again about his sweetheart and their final goodbye. He remembered the poem he had composed for the occasion and the lines that did not quite rhyme. Thankfully in the end, there had been no need for sonnets. By the time they arrived at Uncle Kayode’s house, the car was caked in dust and its weary passengers covered in sweat and grime, but all would soon be forgotten. Uncle Kayode had a luxurious home. He was a big man in Lagos, recently returned from abroad as a senior army officer. Maids cooked for him, the large fans hung from the ceilings whirling at high speed to keep the house cool. Tayo had never seen anything like it before. “When you arrive in England, my son,” Uncle Kayode was saying, “you must make sure to contact british council and don’t forget to write to cousin Tunde and cousin Jumoke.” Continue reading here http://megameeks..com.ng/2017/04/in-dependence-chapter-1-jamb-recommended.html

One of the two persons President Muhammadu Buhari nominated for ministerial positions on Wednesday, Suleiman Hassan, is the same person the president chose in January from Gombe State as one of his 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees, LEGEND VIBES can confirm after a background check. Mr. Hassan, already ambassador-designate having been so confirmed by the Senate earlier in March, was nominated for ministerial position on Wednesday by Mr. Buhari via a letter to the Senate. He is to represent Gombe State in the Federal Executive Council, following the exit of former Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed, from Nigeria’s public service to take up responsibility as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. When asked for comment on the seeming confusion, presidential spokesperson, Femi Adeshina, said: “I have no information on that”. But a source close to the President, with relationship that dates back to the days of the defunct Congress of Progressives Change, one of the parties that formed the All Progressives Congress, said picking Mr. Hassan as a ministerial nominee despite the fact of his being an ambassador-designate was not a matter of confusion or lack of due diligence. According to our source, since Mrs. Mohammed was made minister, representing Gombe State, the President’s long-standing allies who were with him in CPC had been aggrieved, complaining the UN top official was not involved in the efforts to help Mr. Buhari to power. Then, there was agitation that any other appointment coming to Gombe State should be given to “one of those that worked for Buhari”, said the source. So, the source continued, when it was time to pick non-career envoys, the president had to choose Mr. Hassan. “He (Mr. Hassan) is Buhari’s boy; the relationship between them is like the one between Buhari and B.D. Lawal (Secretary General of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal),” said the source. Mr. Hassan, now Registrar of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria, was the Gombe State Chairman of the CPC. He had been nominated envoy since January before Mrs. Mohammed left at the beginning of February. Our source said once the Senate confirms Mr. Hassan minister, the President would withdraw him as an envoy-designate. “It is an elevation,” said the source. Mr. Hassan was nominated minister alongside Stephen Ocheni from Kogi State, which has not had a minister in the FEC since the death of James Ochonu in an accident last year. Unlike Mr. Hassan, Mr. Ocheni does not have a background in active partisan politics. He is a professor of Public Sector Accounting and Dean Faculty of Management Sciences at the Kogi State University. Previously, he was Director, Finance and Accounts, in the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2010 – 2013), and Director, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (2003 – 2010).

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has warned that the lives of nearly 600 million children globally would be at risk in 2040 as a result of water stress. The Fund also noted that in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, the three states most directly affected by conflict, almost 4 million required water, sanitation and hygiene assistance. Geoffrey Ijumba, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Nigeria said, in Nigeria, it was estimated that 75 per cent of water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure in conflict-affected areas had been destroyed; with the displaced people staying in temporary IDPs’ sites and host communities; putting enormous pressure on already strained health and water systems. Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, today visited Zaki-Biam to have first hand information about yesterday's attack on residents. He led members of the State Security Council to the town. His first call was at two hospitals where he visited some of the survivors of the attacks and directed that those seriously affected should be conveyed to Makurdi for further medical attention. The Governor and his entourage were also taken to the mortuary of one of the hospitals where he was shown 14 bodies of some of the victims and informed that three more had been deposited in other hospitals, bringing the number of casualties to 17. They included women and children. Thereafter, he inspected the destruction at the Zaki-Biam Yam Market and its environs and addressed the people at the Anglican Primary School. He vowed that the God who had brought him thus far in life would also assist him and the security council to track those responsible for arrest and prosecution. The chief executive promised to beef up security in the Sankera axis and take other measures at the State Security Council level. The Governor said an assessment of the damage would be made and some assistance rendered to those affected even as he said the state would foot medical and funeral bills. Governor Ortom who described the attacks as unacceptable and reprehensible sympathised with those who lost loved one and pledged that such would never happen again. He said he would call Sankera stakeholders to a meeting to brainstorm over security challenges in the area even as their traditional rulers led by First Class Chief, His Royal Highness, Chief Abu King Shuluwa urged him to take whatever legal means to curb criminal activities in the axis. Other stakeholders who spoke including the member of the State Assembly representing Ukum, Mr Paul Biam, the Anglican Bishop of Zaki-Biam B A Vanger, as well as Sole Administrator, Mr Moses Asawa Agee, and Acting Ter Ukum, Chief Teran Kwaghbo expressed appreciation for the visit which they said restored the confidence of the people and requested the Governor to get to the root of the matter. They noted that the Governor cancelled all his engagements to visit and sympathise with the victims. Hours after Kemen’s family put out a
statement revealing their anger at his
disqualification and their plans to sue Big
Brother Naija, Tboss’s family have also
released their own statement.
Writing via Instagram, TBoss’s sister wrote
that what is wrong can never be right and
that women have the right to say no to
sexual urges from men at any moment. She
also added that their family wishes Kemen
success in his future endeavors.
Kemen was disqualified for groping TBoss
while she slep t and this has led many
people to label him a sexual molester,
pervert and other derogatory terms.
See her post below:
“@miss_goldilocks I'm grateful for the love
and support #TBoss got this week. Thanks
to you all she was saved. It is a great day
to be thankful to God for his blessings. I
wanted also to say thank you to
@bigbrothernaija2017 for setting rules to
protect each and every housemate. Most
might feel the punishment was hash. But
what is wrong can never be right. Big
Brother is entertainment but at no moment
is it ok to feel unsafe. We as women have
the right to say no at any moment. And
keeping quiet is not an option.
We speak up for what is right and we don't
hide behind what people expect. We her
family are grateful for protecting TBoss and
wish every housemate success. We wish
success also to Kemen. May God bless your
week. #teamtboss #bossnation @payporte”
As soon as more details on this matter
emerge, be rest assured that we would keep
you informed.

The brouhaha surrounding Kemen’s
disqualification from the Big Brother Naija
house keeps getting larger by the day as
his family has allegedly waded into the
matter.
Kemen was disqualified for groping TBoss
while she slept and this has led many
people to label him a sexual molester. But
others also put the blame squarely on
TBoss because they feel she ‘goaded’ him
into doing what he did.
A source close to the family revealed to
TheInfoNG their displeasure at the way
Kemen was treated saying that his
punishment could have been meted out to
him quietly instead of indirectly naming him
a pervert/rapist. And since he had the
lowest number of votes, he could have been
evicted quietly.
The source also blamed TBoss saying she
could have salvaged the situation all she
needed to do was throw a tantrum or
complain in any other way instead of just
turning to her side and later telling Big
Brother that she did not give her consent.
They also feel TBoss is a sacred egg in the
house because it appears she has the
backing of one or two people who are in
high positions in the country and have
vested interest in the show and want her to
win. Since Debie Rise did what in their
opinion is the same thing, how come
nothing was done to her? All these have
made them consider suing Big Brother for
defamation of character and unlawful justice
as soon as Kemen returns to the country.
Now that you know all this, what are your
thoughts on this matter? Should Kemen and
his family go on to sue Big Brother Naija? |
