segzy14:You are very correct sir... Location matters a lot, it also depend mode of production (hand mode or machine mode) |
winj:That is the problem my friend... We pay too much attention to titles, we want to back about paper qualifications without knowing or learning anything. Nigeria professors are. Not that productive and the school system only trained people that will turn out for examination. China is doing well because of their level of devotion to learning and they have been able to build product to solve human basic problem. I learned much after school through Internet tutorial videos than in school. |
spyder880:Thank you sir.. It is a privilege sir |
We are almost through with the block work, there are extension that we have to make. Some group of my workers are already warming up for the sand filling and compaction of the foundation. The client is lucky that we have sand fill already on site from the debris of the demolished house and the existing dpc of the previous house. Filling operation should take two days while compaction will take one day

laying of foundation column : according to my estimate, we will need about >=2500blocks for this foundation and since one bag of cement will lay between 40 to 50 blocks, we have = 2500/40 or 50 = 63 bags or 50 bags
|
completion of casting work... summary of materials used so far (note the client have a relative on ground that supply all the materials we need) as a matter of fact we have many external supervisor coming in to check our job. cement = 235 bags so far ( blinding, isolated footings and combined pad footings) gravel = we cant really tell now sand = will come back with this later. |

Day four.. Casting of the foundation footings These footings have two type 1. Strip footings 2. Isolated pad footings The strip footings are 675mm (3 times the width of foundation block wall) and 225mm thick. The total perimeter of the foundation is about 200m removing the column bases we leave us with about 145m Volume of strip footings = 145x0.675x 0.225 = 22cubic meters. Using a mix ratio of 1:2:4 by weight, we have about 6.25bags of cement per cubic meters = 6.25x22 =137bags (giving an allowance of 20% for wastage, occasionally wider strip footings) = 1.25x137 = 165bags. For the column base : we have about 36 x1.1x1.1x0.45= 20cubic meters + 2.2x1.1x0.45x2 = 2cubic meters We have a total of 22cubic meters = 165bags of cement. Total calculated value required = 330bags of cement

check out this our combine footing....at harney project will follow the structure design to the later because i can hardly sleep if work are not done properly
|
for home builders things to note: the column must be centralized on the pad footing to have zero eccentricity because eccentricity create additional bending towards one of the axis or the two axis of the pad footing ( we have the y-axis and the x-axis) 2. the anchorage at the connection of the column and the pad footing must be big enough to allow adequate lapping in this case we have 300mm lapping 3. the footing must be blinded to protect the reinforcement from moisture from the soil below which may cost rusting of the reinforcement during the service life of the reinforcement. 4. combine footings must have both top and bottom reinforcement as shown bellow |
day four setting of foundation column and ready to cast

we need professional eye to get the job moving....day three on the job blinding of the column base, permit me to introduce my partner and a new father mr podosci.... we have 38 column bases and according the structural design we have the following information pad one 1100mm x 1100mm x 75mm (blinding for column base) pad type 2 : 2100 x 1100mm x 75mm (blinding for combine base) volume of concrete = 1.1 x 1.1 x 0.075 x 36(number of column base 1) = 3.267cubic meter volume of concrete for combine base = 2.1 x 1.1 x 0.075 x 2 (number of column base 2 ) = 0.035cubic meters total volume of concrete = 3.302cubic meters (increasing this value by 25% to cater for losses ) = 1.25 x 3.302 =4.13cubic meters for the blinding we are going to use 1:3:6 by weight (this translate to about 4.25bags per cubic meter) total bags of cement required = 4.25 x 4.125 = 18bags of cement since we are batching by weight, for sand we have 18 x 50 x 3/1000 = 2.7 tonnes of sand = 3tonnes of and for gravel = 3 x 2 = 6tonnes of gravel

Onuokwu:No mine my bricklayer Foreman.. . The guy dey chop money pass us, wey be oga... in fact next digging him go join do |
the column base were specify to be 1100mm x 1100mm and 450mm thick the reinforcement for the pad footing is 1100-50 = 1050mm, allowing a cover of 25mm both side. the spacing of the reinforcement is 150mm center to center , 1050/150 = 7 bars both ways making a total of 14 bar anchorage length of 150mm both side making a total of 1050 + 300mm = 1500mm total number of bar for the 36 pad footings = 12/1.5 = 8bars per each length of iron since i need 36 x 14 = 504nr of bars /8 we will be needing 63 length of Y12 for the 36 foundation footings for the remaining two combine footing of dimension 2100mm x 1100mm ( we realize that 1800mm x1100mm will be inadequate so we have to change the longer side to 2100mm) the pad is doubly reinforced because of the action or hogging moment
|
we have to be very careful while making reinforcement and try my best to follow BS codes for bending and scheduling. according to the codes, all vertical member links must have anchorage of greater than 90 degree, it must be between 135 degree to 180 degree and that is why we bend our links in this fashion. our starter bar or foundation column 2.4m in other to have an anchorage of 300mm at the base and have a lapping of >600mm into the next column going up. these are very simple but vital information that most builder neglect but having a good knowledge of reinforced concrete design help us to allways follow standard no matter how hard it is |
let me introduce all the reinforcement of the foundation. according to the structural design we have 40 columns , with links spaced at 200mm c/c (8") and we have 38column bases or pad footing with 36 isolated and 2 combined footings

Rushtec:good job rushtec |
more information about the isolated pad footing also non as column base. we have two type of these footings as specified by the design enginner. pad type one with plan dimension of 1100mm x 1100mm and depth of 450mm (18" ![]() pad type two of two number with plan dimension of 1800mm x 1100mm and depth of 45mm (18" ![]() How do we achieve this on site? we get the job done by first digging the strip footings up to the required depth of 900mm and after that the space for the pad is dug down byand additional 250mm |
excavation of the column base: before we can do this we need to make provision for the column base size. my carpenter will be called to action soon to construct a simple isolated footings form. we have about 40 columns and 38 column bases with two of these bases combine footing (a single footing carrying two columns )

here we have about 200m excavation work to do and i have 22 able men to help me do it. the bricklayers are not left out in this exercise, no wonder they look very fit. i will have join too to get my six packs back looool

excavation work underway: strip footing depth >=900mm strip footing width >=675mm

marking of the foundation trenches, we start with the strip footings
|
We have to check know the diagonal of the setting out for errors... We are error free from the check results
|
from this building line the other two corners of the building are set out using " 3 4 5 " right angle triangle method . in this case, we use multiple of this triangle (12, 16, 25). these two other points were located and the profile was nailed after offset from these original four points
|
day one setting out: in a simple man language, setting out is just the transfer of what we have in our drawing to the ground. for a frame building of one floor and above, we normally use the structural drawing (foundation layout of column bases, strip footings and foundation column point). these are the step taking 1. we set out the building line: the building line is the front face of the building in this case. this line is gotten by offsetting from the fence as prescribed by the architectural site plan but because the site plan was not detail, we have to use our site experience to get this line
