Empiree: Help Needed Here Guys. mufutau55 and you too.
Is it possible to strengthen or fortify existing decking and how?
I see ongoing duplex project. Decking and upper floor are done but owner wants to add additional 2 couches on the upper. When bricklayers were about starting to do that, they notice the decking isn't strong enough to hold heavy load.
It seems there might be bad job with that. In any case, is there a way to strengthening the decking to hold more stuff? Decking (slab) don't hold or carry external walls, they only carries internal partition wall that might have been designed for (as line load across any section of the slab) during the design stage. From the picture you posted below, the problem may be from the beam (carrying both the slab and the partition wall load on top. Adding two extra courses of block wall of 225mm ( 3.47 x 0.45 x 1.4 = 3KN/m load) will over stressed the building that means the design is faulty |

back2sender: Why Y10and not Y12? Because it is lintel : lintel have short opening (maximum of 1.2m for this job), hence the bending moment is so small that you only need to provide nominal reinforcement at the bottom, but since a beam must have four reinforcement for robustness, we decide to provide two Y10 bottoms and 2Y10 top with links spaced 300mm c/c (maximum spacing of links should be 300mm) |

Quantity of bar used for the ground floor columns : Number of bar per column = 4 nr of 4m length bar Total number of pillars ( columns) = 40 Total number of 4m bar required = 40 x 4 = 160 Since we can get 3 nr of 4m bar from one length of of bar (12m). We have 160/3 = 54bars The links, ring or styrub = 40bars. |

Work for this stage of the job includes the following : Rebar work for 40 columns Block work for about 5000 blocks (estimated value) Column formwork Lintel formwork (chain lintel) Column casting Lintel rebar ( bar bending work) Lintel casting.
For the iron work/reinforcement work, we have 4 good iron bending technicians working under strict supervision to bend bar according to structural drawings.
The length of each of the column reinforcement is 4m (this means one length of bar which is 12m/4m will cut three bar each) The bar used for the ground floor column is Y16 The links for the ground floor pillars are spaced @200mm center to center and the bar diameter is 8mm (Y8). |

smiley001: There is corruption with every black man. Quarries run by blacks don't last 6 months, if it lasts longer u queue for 2 days to get 3/4 down, the staff members in every department in black man quarry only think of how to make extra, illegal and side money. And these will surely affect the sustainability of the quarry. If u go to any quarry and see a black man as the scaleman, just know 100% that you would be cheated.
While quarries fully operated by the white skinned last many years. The reason for this, I do not know. I can't say poverty because those white skinned ppl that do d line jobs in the quarries are also poor by their look but they will never compromise unlike the blacks. 90% of those Chinese and Asians you see doing those labour work of the quarries are mostly prisoners. I had interviewed them before so I know what I'm saying.
In all, it's corruption affecting black man to fully and efficiently operate a quarry because up to the director cadre thinks of making money for himsef but not the company. I may have to disagree with you sir, I don't even consider Chinese to be white, another discussion for another days. It is not down to corruption sir, it is down to our culture instant money. Operating a qaury is capital intensive and you need to invest all these money that it will take you a lot years to get your investment back hence our people are not ready to wait that long. You can have a quary fully automated where people pay electronically and the quantity of material bought are measured to customer and this will go in a long way to cut down irregularities |

oapeleo: Sorry, I didn't say all architects make mistakes or neither am I super experienced and error free.
I am writing based on my experience. Maybe my clients are using quarks. But its difficult to tell until you have begon the building.
On the issue of fence. Many people were affected by this in Edo State when Oshiomole got into power. And I tell you till now no compension has been paid. I had to bring a fence just 600mm backwards. Too small but big enough to cry about.
Just weeks ago I got a new site. Very beautiful and complex structure and I was happy I won the contract. Took me a week to plan the building process and cost the whole structure. This design was done by a well known architectural firm in Ogun state.
3 days ago, I mobilized my workers to site to peg the building. Then I discovered the land was just 21x21m and the building was 18x21m.
Every little detail should be considered before design.
Take a look at the design below. Won't tell you the company that did it. But from what I can see on their company website, they have done works in several countries. Its beautiful, but take a look at the roof. Predict how much water will flow into the terrace at the right when it rains. Still the client didn't want to design changed. Ok ooh. You can actually provide a mouth drain on that roof edge. The pipe taking the water down can then be buried into the wall |

Igholize: ..... Bro, I dnt say much but I want 2 say 2 u dat, wen it comes 2 designing of building drawings, one must work wit measurement/unit for dimensioning of various plans in d drawing .... Let me sight an instance, a client tells d dude 2 use 6'' block to design his building, how can d dude show d size of d block in d floor plan if he couldn't or doesn't knw how 2 convert 4rm ( inches- mm )? Bcox, d unit for dimensioning comes in (mm) form.... so my bro one in-ability 2 convert 4rm one unit 2 another could as well be used as a yardstick to determine if he/she is realy good or not. On d other hand, wen it comes 2 construction of a structure ! One has 2 be fully experienced in other 4 him/she 2 erect/supervised.... For one going 2 d net 4 online tutorial nd so on.. Isn't enough bro.... 4 it has 2 b knowledge nd experience included. I greet u bro You are on point sir. The truth is most of our artisans are very conversant with empirical measurement (inch ('') and feet (')) than mm, cm or m for reasons I can't tell. It was easy for me to know this because I was an artisan before going to the University. |

shine12: The beam will have to be ridiculously deep and you will be looking at reinforcement bars of 40mm diameter along with >16 mm diameter links at very close spacing. Such design is wasteful and not ideal. Such a very deep beam may not fall within different provisions of maximum diameter of links, link spacing, percentage of bar you can have in reinforced concrete, workability provision, bonding etc. What I am trying to say is, somethings are not possible depending on the type of materials and level of workmanship |

victorazy: Hello sir, am an architect and I disagree on what ur trying to say here.
There is nothing like impossible in my dictionary just that most builders don't reason or see things like we architect (go to Dubai and see what is going on there).
Arc. Vic: 08069237482 Oga stop this your Dubai narrative. The OP is wrong to assert that he has corrected many architectural drawings because they made those mistakes he highlighted above. The truth is there are design that are not economically doable or buildable due to materials or workmanship. How do you achieve a 5m cantilever beam in a residential house carrying wall and roof load using reinforced concrete. there are simple design error associated with lack basic structural knowledge by the architect |
Properties › Re: VERY IMPORTANT: Mistakes Architects Make And Should Be Avoided by abdulwastecx(m): 8:32am On Apr 16, 2016 |
since1914: This sums it all up. I think the OP, has probably been dealing with only charlatans, because these are mistakes that a sane Architect will never make. OP, there is something called zoning ordinances, and it is the basis upon which building plans are approved in any locality, therefore anyone serious about designing, will first and foremost acquaint themselves with all the relevant sections of this document.
Someone also mentioned that clients force them to design in the way OP decribed. I personally find this comment not only annoying but also irresponsible, because, nobody tells his lawyer how to argue in court, or his doctor how to treat, so why should you allow clients make you churn out bad designs. I think every young professional must put in the time, and make the relevant sacrifice to be successful. It should not initially be about money, rather the early stages of a career should be used to build a stellar reputation; in that way, your professional career will have longevity. A very good wordof advice... Well said sir |

Igholize: Nice article op.... Am a civil engineer by profession. Dere's a day a young lad came 2 nd told me dat, he draws/design building plans, I looked @ him and asked him, wat's ur decipline ? He told me' accounting, dat he has learnt auto-cad.. I laughed nd asked him wat sizes of block is 225mm, he couldn't interprete in inches. I told him dat' he should focus on his decipline. My point is.... In 9ja, anybody now draws building plans. Dat is another factor affectin architecture profession In ability to interpret the size of block in inches is not a yardstick to determine if he is good or not. Metric to imperical measurement is confusing even for University trained engineers or architect. The world is moving fast and information are freely more available, you can learn a lot of things now through video tutorial and a draft man can be very good with conceptualization of building plans etc. I have worked with lots of architect that can't use grid properly, they don't know that multi storey design depends heavily on grid system you adopt and when you want to do such structural design you run into lot of problem. |
