brabus: Tell me more. I'm building 30 units of that building where I took that pics for a Nairalander this year. The terrain is loose soil.
I'll be roofing the first prototype in few days. So, tell me something I'd love to hear. I will highlight it this way. 1. A structural design will explain carried out to determined the size of beams, rib beam and waffle size. 2. Using a waffle size of 600 mm x 600 mm and rib beam of 150 mm by 300mm and a topping of 75mm. 3. The edge beams and beams along column areas are designed and reinforced like continuous beam upside down. 4. The real beam are also designed this way. Advantages includes 1. Speed of construction is fast. All the rib can be lay out within a day, perimeter Formwork done within another day, reinforcement work is faster and smaller. 2. It cut cost of Formwork of say raft foundation because you only need to do perimeter Formwork. 3. It cut cost of excavation since you only need to cut out top soil and foundation founded on sub grade. 4. It cut out cost of filling of foundation and the logistics involved in filling. 5. Volume of concrete is greatly reduced compare to raft foundation. 6.settlement is is uniform since it is monotically constructed unlike some of our raft foundation here. |

brabus: Wood Structures. More pics shortly Their is this foundation solution I want to discuss with you.. .. Waffle foundation type use on a loose soil, similar to raft foundation. It is more cost effective and can stay well on loose soil. Volume of concrete is reduced, foundation is monotically cast, no need for sand filling and reduced Formwork since only the exterior perimeter will be board |

I agree that wood is underused in Nigeria, but could it also be something to do with the climate, in places like UAE as well, i rarely saw wood used in construction, in fact their mode of construction is very similar to that of Nigeria, i.e foundation style etc, most of the time they use Pile as the terrain is sandy desert (loose soil that can move).
One of the reasons why wood may be under used is the treatment aspect, when i was doing my roofing, they had to get some chemical mixture and used that to cover the wood using a brush or broom or whatever, whereas in western countries all you need to do is go into a hardware store, tell them you want treated wood and not soft/white wood and you can use that externally. It can last for hundred of years and nothing will happen to it, as long as its free from damp which can sometimes cause insects to bore into it.
As you know, most houses the flooring is suspended wooden flooring and in the UK, concrete floored houses are frowned upon and they are often hard to finance with a mortgage, and in fact self they are a bit harder to sell. Its the opposite in Nija, the first thing you will hear is that thief can cut through the floor and enter upstairs. Abi Brabus fit use angle grinder cut am steal cement & iron rod lol.. The problem with timber construction in nigeria are enormous. It includes 1.non availability of building codes on structural use of timbers 2. Poor technology and lack of adequate power to seasoned and cut wood into various dimensions 3. Decline of our forest reserve and so many other factors. The use of our timber as a partition material may be more expensive than conventional masonry work but when use as suspended floors it is much cheaper than reinforced floors |

lilygabriel08: you see their problem is when they steal they dont share, while down south we share, cos theres love in sharing i mean look how rich people in the south are now after goodluck That should sarcasm, I guess. Nigeria is pretty very poor both North and South ( worst in the north). The economy is poorly structured, technical and engineering education terrible, infrastructure in shambles and high level of religious intolerance... You can achieve much in a society that people are comfortable with ignorance and poverty |
Politics › Re: ''The North Is A Poverty Trap'' - Shettima by abdulwastecx(m): 5:42pm On Jan 21, 2016 |
divinehand2003: The north is a poverty - trapped region today because the leaders have refused to do the right thing. Agriculture used to be at its peak in Northern Nigeria in time past. Today every díck and harry is waiting for FG monthly allocation. We are now so lazy that we can't even work on our farmlands anymore. Just waiting for federal allocations to survive. Rubbish system of government in Nigeria!!! The biggest problem is our mindset as people. Agriculture use to be important those days but our people were still very poor. Look around us and see what really need to be done. The solution to poverty is education and proper investment in major infrastructure like road, power and establishment of industrial cluster parks. Nigeria is seriously over populated and due to religious beliefs we keep on increasing at an alarming rate. |

KolaShangOne: Actually saw your post where you said you could tie the POP directly to the tie beam, that its cheaper.. That was why it was included in my comment.
On top and not below as its currently being done? Right? Yes sir... Most of the job we have done in Abuja similar procedure was used. As a fact, most pop work in Abuja are done this way |

befto: Thank you. So I guess the 2by2 is a better option but the question still remains I alreeady have nuggings done so do I need the extra wood for the POP work? Also how is POP costed? is it per sqm? Per square meters |
Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by abdulwastecx(m): 4:51pm On Jan 16, 2016 |
KolaShangOne: You bought 330 pcs of 2x2 wood which is used for nogging. It should be enough to hold the POP. With that quantity, i know your caprenter did a 2x4 spacing which is OK. In fact some people don't even do nogging before POP, they tie it directly to the tie beams. It's stronger to placed the 2 x 2 on top of the tie beam. It's also cheaper. |

Xzevian: I will advice you use sized 1/2inch for your pillars and 3/4 Granite for the german floor bUT all the same 3/4down can also fit for both.... it all depends on your choice sir. you are on point sir. how is your project going? The bigger the size of the coarse aggregates the stronger the concrete strength but the coarse aggregate need not to be too big so that void spaces can be reduce. 3/4 ( 19.5mm) is the prescribed size for most structural member |

smiley001: Sand for Concreting and Casting isn't by the colour but by its Sharpness. I'm not against dis yellow colour sand, it maybe Hydrous Aluminium Silicate sand(kaolinite) and if it is, it's not used for casting but for Paper companies, for Paints making as well as fertiliser. Some Paints manufacturing companies in Ogun State collect it from Suppliers, there is a reasonable deposit at a location in Ogun State.
If the purpose is to use it with granite then it must be sharp, if it is sharp no worries but if otherwise... i advise you get a sharp sand irrespective of the colour and should be salt - free.
But one cannot judge the sand from just pictures but by seeing it. Colored sand indicate the presence of impurities like clay, dirt, chemical contamination etc. These are undesirable properties of fine aggregates as specified in codes of practice. It is basically specify to use clay free sharp sand for any format of construction. The clay content can however be reduced by watching sand meant for construction after purity test has been conducted on it |

dgitrader: baba, nothing as such. this was noticed immediately after the raininy season. and this new building is barely a year. I personally supervised it 100% with the aid of a very experienced mason and trusted architect friend. but its beyond mine, over 60% of buildings here share similar cracks.
the last image is of a nearby school with cracks splitting it into two. I want to emphasis its a MINOR CRACKS that even a pin can't pass through in almost all the sited buildings. The one in your building looks like a serviceability crack and not structural Crack, it may be due to harmattan or some environment conditions of shrinkage etc. The Crack in that school is more dangerous and may be as a result of earth movement |

Porthos: Seriously I need clarifications. You said the tie-beams were at 45° and now you made the king post has a vertical slope of 30° using hypotenuse theorem. Now, how? In hypotenuse theorem, ur h=opp=king post but wat made up ur L part of the eqn? rafter? how does the 45° of tiebeam comes to play? if the tiebeam is 45° how come u can get 35° again? Pls assist me……
I am studying civil engineering with little experience in field work and more of design study..... pls I really need ur careful explanations. Thanks You have to know the difference between plans and elevation when it come to roof design. Let me explain it using a three dimensional coordinate system of : x, Y and z X and Y been the plan and z been the height The rafter run across the plan in x Y direction while the rafter is from plan x-y and z direction. The tie beam ( bottom) cord for timber design are mostly spaced at 4ft or 1.2m center to center. At the conner of the house to the tie beam makes a 45 degree to the adjacent edges on the plan. The king post is determined after all the rafter have been nailed or screwed into position. The height of King post depend on the slope of the roof |

lastpage: My Chairman, let me chip-in here.
Is there difference between "use of herbs" to cure ailments as ordered by God himself.... and use of "spiritual powers and principalities" ...or even the use of "sleight of hand" (which some call magic since they dont understand it) ?
The three are very different things.
1.) Use of herbs: This is as a result of 'trial and error' which is then perfected as 'knowledge', over time. For example, how do we know that a particular tree like Dongoyaro (Yoruba) has more efficacy in curing Malaria, than any known Quinine drug (which even suffers resistance from the malaria plasmodium!). It is a process developed over generations through trial and error.
2.) Use of spiritual powers and Principalities: God is a spirit! Man was created in the "image" of God and therefore, Man is also a spiritual being. Though some dont believe in God (which l consider foolish as all evidence point in the opposite direction and confirm that there is indeed a "higher celestial being" ...... by whatever name you wish to call HIM).
Time, knowledge and experience has shown that when man dies, his "spirit/soul" (life force) leaves his body and what remains is just "beef", not different from that of the 'cow meat' we buy in the market! (I did not say you should then go and cook it and chop o! ). We also know that some of these "spirits" go bad, just as some "celestial beings" (Angels) fell short of expactations but thsy still had their "powers and knowledge" intact.
With proper "mental and psychic proper development", some 'humans" are able to harness such powers.... for Good use ....or for Bad use. This is where Juju or Voodoo or other "spiritual powers" come. The initiated are able to harness these spiritual powers to do good (which is what most founding fathers of "Caucasian" civilisation did, Same with early Egyptians of old who built magnificent things, star-gazed and predicted things that took 'science' hundreds of years to explain.
As for the "black man", we are yet to harness such spiritual powers for "good development in our lives" especially in the areas of invention but we have excelled in using them mostly for evil things! I have seen quite a few good uses in my life time, especially in my early days as a teenager, in my rural setting. The knowledge is still there but kept very secret by those in the know, as there are very "strict guiding principles" surrounding it (like honesty of purpose, equity, e.t.c) ......but because our current generations have been known to abuse such powers and have a tendency to be irresponsible, unlike our fathers, it is usually kept away from them. Forget all those "quackery" that say they have 'medcine' because what they have is just tom-foolery!
True spiritual powers doeth no evil but it takes vengeance very seriously, for the oppressed.
3.) Sleight of hand: this basically has to do with "deception" whereby you trick someone to believe that which does not really exist using speed of movement, trickery and other forms of deceptive movements. This is what we call "Magic", as we know it
in conclusion, "Juju" still exists and will always exist but be assured that there are loads of trickery out there, especially in a place like Lagos!
Lastpage! The expression of man's belief in and reverence for a superhuman power recognized as the creator and governor of the universe have too much to be desired. Such belief create too much ambiguity which its book haven't been able to explain. I disagree that all evidence point to god existence from the concept of god we get from all our books. If critical reasoning and logic were to be applied to all these book, it is more foolish to believe in them. I don't believe in 'juju or voodoo' because they are both mere speculations no real evidence of their existence. The Caucasian race achieved a lot by murdering, plundering, stealing resources, land and nation of other peace loving civilization and no voodoo or juju was used to achieve. They just happens to be more ambitious than other civilization before them. Black nation' are in big trouble because of too many basic problem of religion and artificial state drawn by the same Caucasian race. How do one developed his environment when he cherish life after death that he only know through a book that hasn't been able to explain cosmology? How do people find solutions to their problem when they still believe that someone in the village is behind their predicament? Too much believe in fairy tales, voodoo, juju and the like reduced human ability of critical thinking and getting solutions to problem |
