What I mean is that when a building settles monolithically it is a uniform settlement. The main aim is to pass across a message. Using all these limit states terminologies will only confuse the readers most of whom are not structural engineers like you or me.
I am sorry sir.... I understand that now. Good work so far

Seriously ? Australia , North Korea , Netherlands and Sweden are atheistic countries ... right ? And there are crimes in the aforementioned countries ... right ?

According to BBC , Sweden's rape cases are on the spotlight . Sweden is described as the rape capital of the West . Australia , a self-acclaimed atheistic country was also described as the kidnapping capital in the World .

Should we also address the horrendous crimes committed by North Korea's Kim who is a megalomaniac ?

But I'm glad that the Dutch have a clean crime rate smiley

Because you typed none sense and called it a fact does not make it one . Again you are making suppositions outta your hardened mind . Deal with it ,those people's experiences have disproven your weak claims
The joke is on you... You type the highest shot without any atom of proof, you attack others that present tangible things.

There is a relationship between believe in God and poverty, illiteracy, fear of death, Underdevelopment.

Nigeria is one of the most religious country in the world. It is one of the most corrupt, with sky high poverty rate, unemployment and a lot of religious and tribal crises.
Religion thrive on fear of unknown, and these fear are abundant in in poor countries. Fear of death from illness, developed countries have a solution (better health, good environment and improved transportation). fear of poverty, developed countries have a solution to this also ( better economic performance and good social programs).

The more technology and education a society have the more they can solve problems and reduce the importance of sky daddy.

God has His ways , if you have a problem with him dying on the cross for man then you can pray and ask Him yourself

Why will an omnipotent God kill him self to save his creation and sins he knows they will commit before creating them in the first place. The more you try to justify illogical fallacy the more childish you sound.

Do you have a video to support this claim ? I need a video of slave masters justifying their acts with the bible . The video should contain the location where the action took place too . Discrepancies are not allowed
European use religion to reinforced their believe in the supremacy of their race and subsequent enslavement of Africans.
Why is Jesus portray as a Nordic European instead of the tan people of middle east Asians.
Slavery is still ongoing but it's more with the mind, the more portrayer of white God we worship the more we believe in what they want us to believe in.

I tot 1:2:4 is 1 bag of cement to 2 wheel barrow of sand and 2 wheelbarrow of gravel.
Note: 1 wheelbarrow= 4 head pans
1: 2: 4 mix ratio can either be by weight or by mass. For a mix design it is by weight.
For a critical job where the strength of the concrete is specify, either to be M20, or M25. The constituents aggregates is measured by weight but for normal work where the concrete is not specified it can measured by volume.

By volume 1:2:4 means 1bag of cement to four head pan of sharp sand ( since one bag of cement is equal to two head pan of sand) to four eight head pan of gravel.

There are different reasons for buildings to settle.
One is the answer the Engineer gave you. Every building settles even if it was built on pile foundation. However settlement must be uniform (monolithic) and must be within acceptable limits. That is it should be very very small and not noticeable. If the building settles differentially you get 'non-uniform' cracks.

Another reason for cracks is plaster cracks. When poor quality plaster sand is used, there will be thread -like cracks on the walls.

The 3rd reason for cracks is the breakage of blocks done by plumbers and electrical conduits. If these long breakages are not filled with strong mortar or weak concrete, then you get major cracks that make it look as if the building is failing at foundation
Uniform settlement is not also called monolithic. Monolithic is used for structural members that are cast at the same time.

Cracks in plastering may be due to ultimate limit state failure or serviceability limit state.

It may also be due to temperature changes (like plastering during hammertern season). Temperature cracks as to do with plastering drying too quickly.

Plastering cracking may also be due to the use of very thick plaster.

I have a follow up question that I meant to ask in my quest for knowledge.

The triple design of the roof, is it just aesthetics or there's an architectural reason behind it?

Thanks.
It is for economy as well as aesthetic.
The reason for this tripple roof is the need to design a flat roof that will be fine to sea.

From experience, flat roof cost less than 60% of equivalent hip roof ( German roof).
The slope of 7degree with a long span roofing sheet will allow water to flow directly without leakage.

The nature of the roof will wind to move without disturbing the roof.

Always a pleasure to answer you sir

Originally, the system was meant to create a safer, stronger, aesthetic, faster and cheaper alternative system of building as it's being achieved in Asia, Europe and America. While other advantages can be easily met, the cheaper part is a major challenge. Compared to traditional wet construction, a system that is meant to knockdown the price of building by 50% on the average, is now between being on par to an increase with same percentage majorly because our steel companies are not functioning, we export Gypsum and import Gypsum Plasterboard.

I find solace in the fact that we now have a local company that produces quality cement boards and sidings and majorly the fact that Dangote announced his plans to invest $4b in steel production which is a better news than FG making same announcement.
I think the system is much more expensive than our conventional building, the esthetic part can be debated.

The real solutions is the structural use of bamboo, stabilized brick and polystyrene construction.
Bamboo is a very strong material that grow very fast, I'd the right technology is in place like it is Colombia, hauwai and east Asia, a lot of beautiful home can be constructed with a fraction of what we spend.

Bamboo can be engineered to suit different construction, it can be manufactured into board, it can be treated to withstand harsh environmental conditions, it is environmentally friendly and it grows much much faster than wood.

I think information is easier now, the Internet have made it possible to leaen new ideas from culture or society several thousands of kilometers apart.

The routine are not boring but lay down procedures on how best a house can be built.

Innovations are needed in the building construction section and these innovation should be aiming at reducing cost and building more environmentally friendly houses for our people.

Some many iniatives are taking place in other third world countries like China, India, South Africa etc. I think that is the future.

The question should be how do we build cheaper, better, faster, more environmentally friendly and finer.
How do we build a meter square of a wall less than N2000 naira, how do we build a meter square of wall less than N2000.

The northerners are straightforward people judging from those I have met and my hausa friends. One thing I have observed, they don't judge people.
They are amazing people and I like their tiny voice(females).
Too much generalization is bad, though you have a positive prejudice towards northerners but I believe people should be judged based on their character and not based on a mere geographical location or not too clear tribal alliances.

Plenty of igbos, own small business, into real estate and every other sector of the economy, some are into illegal things etc. Same can be said about the yorubas and to some extent the the hausas and other northern group.

Our problem is how do we correct all these problem we have has a nation. How do we stop almajiri, encourage technical based education, reduce poverty, create a vibrant middle income class, reduce religious violence and intolerance in the north. How how do we solve igbo social economy problem and how do we solve niger delta poverty and environmental problem or how we can solve poverty and infrastructure problem of the South west.

We need a functional society where igbos, yorubas, hausas and all other ethnic groups will be able to contribute positively to the development of Nigeria.
I was born in a northern city with considerable large population of yorubas, hausas and igbos who all want all the basic things of life. they all want to feed themself and their family, they all want stability and economic prosperity, they all support Nigeria during sporting event

The beauty of Christianity is that in the presence of God, there's liberty. There's freedom to debate, freedom to research, freedom to pursue knowledge.

Somethings are revealed by God, others are meant to be discovered by us.

Though revelation is much more preferable but Bible says it's the glory of God to conceal a matter but the honour of princes to search it out

The uniqueness of Christ is that he did away with the curse of sin and death and we are made/live right by Grace.

In Christianity, there are no rules or rites or traditions to follow as existed under the levitical law.

The important is to seek to know God with all your heart and you will find him

Unfortunately, people are still being deceived by a man who was born 600 years after the birth of Christ, declared himself the last prophet, took from some of the ancient hebrew laws and history and produced a revised rule book, calling it a holy book.

smh.
The problem with your argument is that it lack facts.
Christianity is almost the same with Islam. Both believe in monotheism existence one God, both of the. Share the same geograical location and both draw from similar pull of books.

Look around all those people claiming to be religious, look at the city and counties they live in compare it with those that are free minded, people that allow logic and scientific evidence to dictate for them and see.

Nigeria a big slum of large Christian population, in fact we are one of the most religious country in the world at the same time one of the poorest, most corrupt, highest birth rate one of the lowest life expectancy rate etc because we believe en fairytale exported by whites and Arab. Many European are moving away from these stone age ideology and building better constitution and society that treat human fairly.

Imagine if you don't have to worry about some sky daddy, you will be able to treat your fellow country men equal, be a patriotic citizen, pay your tax instead of enriching some pastors, solve human challenges and value your life more.

The truth is, from all indication it seems that their is no life after death

BUT better soup na money kill am grin The truth is that after my calculations I cannot afford a site Supervisor for my project. It's better to realize this and work around it than to have a stalled project or piss off a busy Supervisor.

After all this has been said I ask you this question, Shouldn't a plumb and straight job be the signature of every single bricklayer? Quality shouldn't be expensive. Yes, a Rolls Royce is more expensive than a Honda Accord but an Honda Accord is 100% a solid car.

Now on the education part, I absolutely am secure that after a 6 months apprenticeship the quality of workmanship will increase a 100 fold. We as Nigerians are blessed with brains that soak up knowledge, I am of the firm opinion that with the right exposure to technology and tools that he'll improve his workmanship.

I built evidence #1 by myself just from casually watching the crew that was building my house.

Evidence #2 is what they are attempting to use to frame my german floor (we'll see about that) but I assure you that no US trained workman will allow this on his site.
I am in total agreement with you sir, we need to upt our game and do things properly.

I love that that wooden framed cabin you built yourself sir. I can you been a very good carpenter from what you built over their sir.

The bottom line is continuous education and further improvement based on current practice.

When I look at a project, I look at a better way to get them done at the cheapest cost possible, for example their was one project like that that was done in cross river ( calabar) by a non Nairalander engineer/ builder.
The building was done on a sloping terrain and I believe a lot of resources was extended to the project without proper analysis and study of the slope properties.
So much money could have been saved by trying something different such as grading the soil to the back and build a retaining wall to support the earth and do a proper foul drainage to take whatever water to the front.
This is is just one example of things that can be done properly.

It takes concrete a minimum of 28days to achieve most of its strength.
Bamboo strut support the weight of cast in place concrete and such platform can only be removed after the concrete ha achieved most of its strength.
So, removed strut formwork after 28days

When calculating quantity of materials from your mix ratio, don't we consider the Volume of dry concrete dat ranges from 1.54 - 1.57 or thereabouts as a FOS to counter shrinkage? I didn't see you multiply such in your calculation for qty of cement, sand and gravel.
I am aware about of that factor of safety and that is why I allow 25% for shrinkage.

BermudaTriangle:
My dear op, before writing anything let me tell you that i am a bona fide yoruba and lives in Lagos.
I am one of those who never fell for the media ruse that promoted Fashola as a performer. Go through my posts and you will confirm this.
Apart from developing flower gardens at conspicuous locations of the state and modernisation of a few roads with particular concentration in elite areas, i
can't see the imprints of a performer in his 8 years reign.
In addition Fashola is elitist in nature, practice and action.
In his eight years in the saddle he did not increase the number of public schools in the state but rather took education out of the reach of children of the poor through elitist fees and gave private schools free reign to exploit the people at will yet with substandard delivery.
I won't be surprised if the tariff increase is his own creation.
He is elitist and corrupt to the core.

How many poor civil servants
enjoyed the benefits of his few housing programme ?
He is on record to have callously and stupidly say that he did not build those houses for the poor. So what can you expect of such a person ?
He belongs to the class of those who believe some are poor by their own design and not by providence.
He may eventually turn out as a poor image maker for this
government.

I refuse to accept that whatever improvement we may experience in the power sector in the interim is to his credit and not GEJ's.
The problem with Nigeria is the masses mentality and their socialism tendency.
We like to be United state of America, we want to be like other developed countries like countries in western Europe, East Asians etc but we are not ready to work and sacrifice for it.

Every mega city always look for ways to make it attractive for investors, expertise and people that will contribute to the social economy status of the city.

The priority o fashola as the Lagos state governmer is to build roads, water works, schools etc but these infrastructure requires funding most of which are generated internally, hence through tax, most of these tax comes from these so called elite and high end people. So, naturally those areas will get these services first before other areas like that contribute zero in term of tax will get.

Been poor is a choice, you either decide to be poor by been lazy, give birth to too many children or be comfortable by working hard and have a moderate family. Most of us in this country don't really know the roles of government, don't know that the size of family have a role to play on how rich or poor an individual can be.

In UK people save money for their children education, this allow them to have a moderate population and small family. If you can't afford to send your children to school why having many of them

Abeg no annoy person with these your senseless made comment...

Nigerians are ready to pay and sacrifice when there is comfort.
Present phcn charges before it hiked was an overrated pay against the worst condition of power supply in every Nigerian home.

There was never a comfort in suffering...
Nigeria has been suffering from epileptic power supply in times immemorial.
Nothing enjoying there but we tolerated and adjusted like everything is fine, because we reason and think like blacks...

Fashola should review the current charges ASAP.
Nigerians have suffered enough yet nothing tangible is done by Nigeria leaders.
Brother read and look closely at the comment you just quoted and realized the truth in it.

We pay close to nothing for power, so how do the private company make money that they can reinvest in staff and capacity building.

We know that the system is not as good as it should be but we have to pay for it to be better.

Nigeria is one of those few top 25 world leading economics with subsidy for power, education, electricity, health care service, pipe born water etc.

Nigeria is the only big economy who's national budget is less than 10% of her gdp ( a One trillion dollars gdp with less than 100billion dollars budget).

If we must developed our infrastructure we cannot solely depend on oil revenue and cannot continue to run social utilities on subsidy. We must be ready to diversify and allow market forces to determine the price of utilities like water and power.

We need to pay more on power and water if we must developed new water and work, build more power stations and distribution facilities.
